Jamison Isaak has been releasing music as @teendaze since 2010. Over the past 13 years, his music has navigated a multitude of different sounds, and his 2021 LP Interior landed him the JUNO Award for Electronic Album of the Year. This year, he released 4 EPs, his most recent, Quiet City, on his newly launched label, Easy Listening Recordings. He's also been busy DJing across North America in the past few years, and recently started a residency on Dublab. We're very much looking forward to welcoming him into the SB guest mix series with a lovely little opener for 2024! "Ever since things began opening up in 2021, I decided I only wanted to DJ, and not perform live any more. I've found DJing to be so much more satisfying! One of my favourite parties in recent years was just a few weeks ago at Public Record in New York City, and I wanted to try and bring some of the same energy from that night to this mix. Synopsis Late in 2013, the musical world was gearing up to celebrate the 70th birthday of British composer John Tavener, but sadly he died, so his 70th birthday, which fell on today's date in 2014, became a memorial tribute instead. Tavener had suffered from ill health throughout his life: a stroke in his thirties, heart surgery and the removal of a tumor in his forties, and two subsequent heart attacks. In his early twenties, Tavener became famous in 1968 with his avant-garde cantata entitled The Whale, based loosely on the Old Testament story of Jonah. That work caught the attention of one of The Beatles, and a recording of it was released on The Beatles' own Apple label. Tavener converted to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1977, and his music became increasingly spiritual. Millions who watched TV coverage of the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997, were deeply moved by his “Song for Athene,” which was performed to telling effect as Diana's casket left Westminster Abbey. Taverner was knighted in 2000, becoming Sir John Tavener In 2003, Tavener's Ikon of Eros, commissioned for the Centennial of the Minnesota Orchestra, and premiered at St. Paul's Cathedral—the one in St. Paul, Minnesota, that is, not the one in London—and Tavener came to Minnesota for the event. The Six Shooter is a United States western old-time radio program starring James Stewart as a gunfighter. It was created by Frank Burt, who also wrote many of the episodes, and lasted only one season of thirty-nine episodes on NBC (Sept. 20, 1953–June 24, 1954). Initially, it was broadcast on Sundays at 9:30 p.m. Eastern Time, through October 11. Then it was heard at 8:30 p.m. for three weeks. Finally, on November 8, 1953, through March 21, 1954, it was broadcast Sundays at 8 p.m. Beginning April 1, 1954, through the final episode it was on Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. One old-time radio directory called the program "a last, desperate effort by a radio network (NBC) to maintain interest in adventure drama by employing a major Hollywood movie star in the leading role." Stewart starred as Britt Ponset, a drifting cowboy in the final years of the wild west. Episodes ranged from straight western drama to whimsical comedy. A trademark of the show was Stewart's use of whispered narration during tense scenes that created a heightened sense of drama and relief when the situation was resolved. Synopsis Many good things come in threes – at least William Bolcom seems to think so. On today's date in 1971, in a converted garage next to a graveyard in Newburgh, New York, American composer and pianist William Bolcom put the finishes touches to the second of three piano pieces he collectively titled “Ghost Rags.” “Ghost Rag” No. 2 was titled “Poltergeist” and dedicated to Tracey Sterne, who at that time was a dynamic record producer at Nonesuch Records. In her youth Sterne pursued a career as a concert pianist, but in the 1960s and 70s was responsible for assembling the Nonesuch label's astonishingly diverse catalog of old, new and world music. “Ghost Rag” No. 3, titled “Dream Shadows,” was described by Bolcom as a “white rag” which evoked “the era of white telephones and white pianos” and “was in the white key of C Major.” Bolcom dedicated this rag to his fellow composer, William Albright. And Bolcom's ‘Ghost Rag” No. 1, which has proved to be the most popular of the three, was titled “Graceful Ghost.” Bolcom dedicated this music to the memory of his father, whose benign spirit Bolcom said he often felt hovering around his piano while he played at night. Aaron Copland, American composer, was born in 1900 in New York. He was taught to play the piano by his elder sister, and when he was 15 years old he decided he wanted to be a composer. In 1921 he went to Paris to study with the famous teacher Nadia Boulanger, and during his 3 years in Paris he was at the forefront of the mucical avant-garde. After his return to the United States he produced his first major work, the Symphony for Organ and Orchestra which was first performed at Carnegie Hall in 1925.Copland, like Bach, assimilated all the important musical trends of his lifetime. Jazz, Stravinsky's neoclassicism, American folklore, and finally Schoenberg's 12-tone system, all made their imprint on his music, and yet his style remained unique, personal, and instantly recognizeable. He stopped composing in 1970, but continued conducting and lecturing for more than 10 years, as well as promoting modern American works and establishing the composition department at Tanglewood. He died in 1990 in the Phelps Memorial Hospital in Tarrytown (New York).Copland is rightly considered the most important American composer of the mid 20th century. He produced masterpieces in most musical genres. His most enduringly popular works are those of his 'Americana' period : Rodeo, Billy the Kid, Appalachian Spring, Danzon Cubano, El Salon Mexico, the film scores Our Town and The Red Pony, and the incidental music for Irwin Shaw's play Quiet City. The 'Fanfare for the Common Man' from his imposing Third Symphony has become an icon of American music, played at countless celebratory occasions. His concerti include a Piano Concerto and a Clarinet Concerto written for Benny Goodman. He also left a sizable body of chamber music, songs, and piano music. His piano works span the better part of his career. Between the early frolic of The Cat and the Mouse (1920) to the serial 10-tone Piano Fantasy (1957), we find these major landmark works : Passacaglia (1922), Piano Variations (1930), Sonata (1941), and the ever popular Four Piano Blues (1948), all of which are among the most important American piano works of the time.

Aaron Copland originally composed "Quiet City" in 1939 for the play of the same name. The play failed, but Copland's piece went on to become one of his best-loved & most frequently performed works. "Quiet City" is essentially an urban nocturne, the aural equivalent of Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks," and is built around two themes: an evocative trumpet call, and a dotted figure for the strings. To round out the piece Copland added haunting interludes performed either by an English horn or an oboe (in this case an oboe). Series: "La Jolla Symphony & Chorus" [Arts and Music] [Show ID: 33383]

Colin Marshall talks to Aaron Katz, director of such films as Dance Party USA, Quiet City, and the new Cold Weather. Continuing his established tradition of examining the sphere of urban twentysomethings who aren't quite sure how their lives got to this point or where they're going next with a strikingly aestheticizing gaze, Katz incorporates a near-Sherlock Holmesian plot into his latest film. His central characters, a Portland ice-factory worker, his DJ buddy, and his sister, find themselves embroiled in a forbiddingly seedy mystery when a girl goes missing and it falls to them to find her.
