This episode, "Controversy! Dialogue! Flash! Exposure!" is an unplanned venture off-script. The host brings up Dr. Phil Manfield's claim (from an earlier TDT episode) that EMDR 2.0 is actually an unnecessarily complex version of Flash--and that the host's recent trials using AI mapping of working memory appear to offer credence to the claim. From the previous segment, the listener will know that EMDR 2.0 is the basis of the guests' work--an accelerated version of EMDR often utilizing exposure, and highly effective in inpatient and outpatient settings. This moves into further discussion of the importance of inspiring courage in traumatized clients, and even making therapy fun, rather than protecting the client like a breakable object. Iconoclastic and exuberant, Ad and Suzy are accomplished academics and clinicians, and their CV's are so long as to require hyperlinks below this paragraph! Ad de Jongh's CV: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Ad-Jongh Suzy Matthijssen's CV: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Suzy-Matthijssen Highlights include: -Are Flash and EMDR 2.0 fundamentally two ways of doing the same thing? Evidence for and against, including the success of Flash with an AI client trained only with EMDR sessions -The host's experiments with AI-driven software based on EMDR 2.0, to successfully use Flash-The role of fun and encouragement in successful treatment, and how exposure is part and parcel of this -PTSD conceptualized as an anxiety disorder or phobia, and how "stabilizing" techniques, or "safe spaces" may encourage fear or memories -Why, despite a significant body of literature building since 2015, there is still no PSYTREC in the USA (hint: insurance companies) -Resolving attachment issues by treating trauma, rather than the reverse Ad and Suzy have several intensive, online trainings pertaining to precisely what they speak about on this episode, at www.emdradvancedtrainings.com. As well, you can read the PSYTREC research at www.psytrec.nl, although you will need Chrome to translate this page into English. These links also appear halfway through this episode. In future (as in past) episodes, guests will offer counterpoints to Dr. de Jongh and Dr. Matthijssen's views, and this video is a dialogue, rather than an endorsement of their perspectives. Likewise, The Dissociative Table does not endorse the views of its hosts, nor do any professional organizations to which the hosts or guests might belong. It should be noted that the host has no connection to the guests through EMDRIA, as the Dutch have their own regulatory body for EMDR trainings and practitioners. This episode, "Are we wasting our clients' time?" is a discussion with Professors Ad de Jongh and Suzy Mattijssen (part 1 of 2), pioneers in the intensive, brief, research-validated treatment of PTSD, including cases with severe comorbidities like MDD or BPD. Iconoclastic and exuberant, Ad and Suzy are accomplished academics and clinicians, and their CV's are so long as to require hyperlinks below this paragraph! The host presents common objections to their methods from therapeutic community--these generally focus on the way in which dissociative symptoms should be addressed in treatment. Ad de Jongh's CV: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Ad-Jongh Suzy Mattijssen's CV: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Suzy-Matthijssen Highlights include: -The largely American cultural phenomenon of treating dissociative symptoms as separate from PTSD symptoms -Ad and Suzy's claim that there is an irrational fear of dissociative symptoms among some clinicians (especially in the EMDR world), which is not seen in the CBT world -Highly dissociated childhood memories accessed and resolved by associations naturally made during intensive treatment of recent trauma, rather than years of therapy -The lack of research validation for the Theory of Structural Dissociation of the Personality, and similar conceptualizations of dissociation as "parts." -Repression of uncomfortable memories and dissociation of troubling affect as a universal phenomenon, not related directly to trauma -Therapists increasing the phobia of memories with "safe states," coping skills, and "resourcing." -The PSYTREC facility, and the role of Working Memory Taxation in overcoming hypervigilance and resolving trauma Ad and Suzy have several trainings pertaining to precisely what they speak about on this episode, at www.sfrankegroup.com. “I knew that if I had a Plan B, I would be 50/50. I would be one foot in and one foot out, and I had to be fully dedicated.” - Derrick ‘Moe' Moore When the Climbing the Charts podcast first launched in 2022, the co-hosts created a list of dream guests – Moe Moore was at the top of that list, being a co-founder of Slim & Husky's.  Almost two years and many amazing guests later, this is that episode, and it was fitting that the Tennessean was even on hand to take some photos! Moe is the co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) of Slim & Husky's, a pizza concept that is more than pizza – it's pizza, art, and music.  Moe shares how music and art are built into the DNA of Slim & Husky's, and shares his hard-earned life lessons about what it takes to make it as a successful entrepreneur (including the often unappreciated advantages of having no Plan B).  He discusses the future plans and dreams for Slim & Husky's, and even gives an overview of the rich culture and community of North Nashville.

Chris Carter, the creative force behind the acclaimed series The X-Files, has expressed his excitement and approval for the upcoming reboot by director Ryan Coogler. Originally debuting in 1993, The X-Files gained immense popularity for its gripping narrative centred around FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, respectively. The series, known for its unique blend of paranormal investigations and intricate alien conspiracies, became a cultural phenomenon. Despite not being directly involved in Coogler's project, Carter welcomes the fresh perspective and diversity promised by the reboot. Coogler's take on the iconic series, now owned by Disney post the acquisition of 20th Century Fox, is highly anticipated by fans eagerly awaiting the revival of this beloved classic.

Voices In My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast) - Episode 535 - Iconoclastic Sex:  Christian Sexual Ethics and Human Trafficking   Guest: Henry Walter Spaulding III   Christian sexual ethics operates from a place of privilege when it does not consider those impacted by its moral prescriptions. A large majority of publications on Christian sexual ethics consider choices and images abstracted from lived conditions of the people called to make these decisions. As such, it leaves out many for whom sex is neither welcome nor a choice. As such, these same texts present images of sexual subjects that marginalize those that do not fit. As the book presents, sexuality, both Christian and otherwise, prioritizes a language of purity that strangles the life of those imaged impure. The present book remedies this emphasis through the language of iconoclasm that blasphemes these images and opens theological reflection beyond the boundary of image-based approaches. Utilizing a qualitative study of survivors of trafficking and those who grew up under evangelical purity teachings, Spaulding narrates sexual ethics in light of their testimonies and the theological resources of iconoclasm to articulate a more just and loving sexuality. The new emphasis on sexual ethics not only resists the prescriptions that create the conditions of sex trafficking but the creation of new communities capable of solidarity and mutuality with those caught in the web of trafficking. He was educated in Greece and the UK & prior to joining Bayes Business School, City University of London in 2014, he held posts at Cardiff, Strathclyde, Aberdeen and Brunel universities. Costas researched New Product Design Consultancies and tech companies in Silicon Valley and was a visiting professor at Said Business School (University of Oxford) Costas is also an author and his book, Purposeful Curiosity  is the subject of this podcast. Costas now lives in West London with his wife and daughter. Podcast episode Summary:  In this episode Costas shares his Curiosity Journey and the work he undertook to understand what it takes to employ Curiosity in a meaningful fashion. We discuss what it takes to be purposeful, the distractions we must refuse, and the permission needed to nurture the “Itch” within us all to follow our passions and execute our dreams. As Adam Grant, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Think again shares, Costas's book “Nails the difference between idle curiosity and a productive drive to discover”.  Points made throughout the Episode:   o    What more can you say about you the person? Costas shares that since we was a child he was a very curious person. He took things apart and his friend was his screw driver. He is very grateful that his parents encouraged this fascination with how things worked, with his curiosity as a child. This same curiosity has taken him to different parts of the world to study and work and by way of it he has met incredibly interesting people. o    When you show interest in what others do it leads you to some very interesting answers. o    Costas wanted to become an Architect. Whilst his parents at that time discouraged that path it is not surprising to Costas that his PhD and research focuses on Creative & Innovative organisations, some of whom were design studios and others of whom where Architectural firms. There is something we are passionate about, sometimes we are steered away from pursuing these passions but if you like something so much it will always come back. o    Costas encourages people to do something about which you are passionate and good. We can follow many topics and we need to understand these topics. Costas became curious about Curiosity and he wanted to nurture that passion and understand what it takes to pursue curiosity purposefully. o    Because Costas knows Creativity, Innovation and Curiosity are closely linked or brothers he found researching Curiosity to be within his gift. o    He makes the point that if he wanted to research Rockets he would find it very difficult because he wasn't very good at physics or related disciplines and most probably he would not be interested in any case. o    We have to care about something, we have to be passionate and we have to understand the subject to pursue purposeful curiosity. o    Notwithstanding the fact that Costas has studied Innovation and Creativity when he first mentioned his interest in studying Curiosity everyone he spoke with thought he was crazy. o    The external voices were really projecting their fears onto Costas about the potential pitfalls and opportunity cost of his project. When we embark on something new, and Curiosity is a new field for Costas, people are going to project their fears. o    People who surround us normally care for us. They want to protect us from failing and still if we are passionate about something we have to learn to silence these external voices to follow our path. o    Costas is not encouraging blind faith or reckless pursuits he is taking about projects where you prepare and surround yourself with professionals or people who know something about what you are trying to achieve. o    To illustrate his point Costas tells us about his new interest in Kite Surfing and how he approached becoming skilful when initially it seemed daunting. In the same way as before external voices tried to dissuade him. He was told of all of the dangers associated with Kite surfing and as before he noticed people were simply projecting their fears. o    Costas chose a good instructor, he went online to read up as much as he could about safety, essentially saying he did not go to his first lesson unprepared. o    Being curious about something means you go to your first meeting being prepared. o    Costas's motivation to write his book was to research Curiosity and it became his purpose. o    Purposeful Curiosity is about translating our curiosity into something. We can be curious about stuff, satiate our curiosity somewhat and move to the next thing. Doing this means nothing happens, no processes get better or the community doesn't benefit etc. It is a bit of a selfish act. o    Costas noticed he was doing this, his colleagues and others were too. o    He was curious to understand if there were people who followed their curiosity and executed change, translating their curiosity into a service, a product or a start-up o    For his research Costas interviewed 60 people from different walks of life, different geographical locations from Japan to California. o    What Costas noticed was that the people he studied stayed with their curiosity longer. Too often when we are curious and something doesn't work out we drop it. What Costas found was the opposite with those who were Curious and executed. If something did not work out they became even more curious. o    Costas describes how when he began his research and project he got so curious his world disappeared and it became like a movement to him. o    Costas was curious to know how we can help people be more curious, to execute their curiosity and to improve life, communities, solve problems and provide solutions to life questions. o    It was important for Costas to address the subject of fear in his book Purposeful Curiosity. He admits himself that when he starts something new he feels fear. He is not fearless. Instead however he uses his curiosity to overcome his fears. o    When he started Kite Surfing in the Summer of 22, he saw Kite Surfers jumping 5 or 6 metres and he was afraid. By being curious he tried to figure out what could go wrong. He developed a list of mitigating solutions. He used his curiosity and questions about his fear to help him move closer to his goals. Fear doesn't necessarily go away but you can make it become second nature to you. o    Costas uses his failure to learn, to ask for feedback and to course correct. o    Costas wrote this book during Covid. It was bemusing to Costas that he chose to do something so creative in isolation because he is a person who enjoys company. o    Costas explains making fear second nature by saying that the more we do something the more it becomes like skin. We get used to it. He uses the example of writhing his own book to explain this phenomenon. o    Writing a book is a big endeavour. Writing 300 pages in a year and a half takes commitment, it takes time and over time writing  & pursuing this project of writing a book about Purposeful Curiosity became second nature to him. o    Costas admits that writing is not something that comes naturally to him, in fact it makes him a bit uncomfortable, because for Costas it is about disseminating his thoughts onto paper for others to read. o    You have to be comfortable with discomfort. o    When Costas started writing he was very uncomfortable, it was taking him more time than he thought it should, he was stressed and he was beset with his inner critic asking “will he get it?” but curiously the more Costas wrote, the more time he took he started to get comfortable with his discomfort to the point that he began to enjoy it. o    Costas never felt paralysed by his fear, he felt energised. He studiously worked to bring down his fear by doing more research, reading books that were close to the kind of book he wanted to write, talking to people etc. o    To execute Curiosity you have to first give yourself permission to go on the Journey. Do not wait for others to give you the green light. o    Curiosity leads us to be relevant. o    All of us have to be lifelong learners. o    Costas encourages us to figure out “our itch” to take ownership for our particular Curiosity Project. If you have a passion, a curiosity, open a folder, take notes, do your research, have boundaries, don't be seduced by the internet, there are a lot of smart resources like Udemy etc give yourself permission become a bit of an expert. o    Costas also notes that when you are starting out, following your itch and learning about your passion or topic you need  to find a Tribe. o    Ask “who is your tribe” go to meetings, participate & talk to discover. o    Don't be afraid. The important thing is to continue learning, to continue asking questions to surround yourself with a Tribe, people who are passionate, different, open and open to being surprised and can add meaning to your project. o    Costas expands on his acronym Curiosity which neatly describes the qualities of a good team and in this case Tribe. o    Assembling a dream Tribe/Team is about hiring curious people. People who are Collaborative, Unabashedly passionate about the subject, Resilient, Iconoclastic, Open to outside interests, Urgent and Surprise seeking. o    What Costas admires in his field and in his career or on his teams are the people who bring you questions. They are not waiting for him to solve for everything. o    Costas mentions the wise adage “never meet  your heroes or heroines” He did not meet this problem when he was interviewing his 60 subjects or innovators for his research. He was surprised by their willingness to share things. People confided in him which for Costas meant that there was trust. Costas was struck by their degree of interest in his subject, their willingness to ask him questions and to take notes. There was a real dialogue with naturally humble subjects. o    Curiosity means you have to be able to actively listen. If your tribe tells you, you are not ready you have to be prepared to listen. o    Curious people can listen, they are present and they are humble. o    No matter his interviewees were very successful, often monetarily they were also humble. There is always something further to learn. There is always another itch they want to scratch and they know this. o    Costas reminds us that it is important to listen and to digest the information we are getting. We have to be patient & willing to take our time if we want to reach our goals. o    We need to be willing to do the hard work. We live in an era where there is instant gratification, from food, to education to romance. Everything is on our Smart Phone and curiously then people complain. The book is not a pill, serving instant gratification & guaranteeing results. It is a guide that invites the reader to put in the hard work, to embrace discomfort and to learn. This work requires commitment, time, enthusiasm and effort.  o    One of the nuggets Costas shares in his nine essential and practical lessons is the idea of “disciplined serendipity” which he explains using his own example of script writing. o    When he started his pursuit of script writing he went through the exact process he illuminates in his book. He met fear, his imposter syndrome and all the many ways his mind told him he should not pursue this path-he knew nobody in this field- he did not have a ready-made tribe, he knew he was not professionally trained etc.. Still he prevailed. He put the lessons from his own book to work. o    Costas put all of his concerns to one side and he started. He bought a notebook and he started to write. He soon got into “flow” a state of immersion where his world fell away. In flow you forget about time and place. It happened to him when he was researching and again when he started to write. o    Disciplined Serendipity means we can move from one thing to something else and by applying the nine lessons from his book we can become better. o    Costas has now found his tribe, he has identified an award winning script writer at the University where he works and he is getting the support he requires. In a way Costas developed his own curriculum & applied the lessons from his own book to become better at script writing. o    Curiously for Costas script writing has helped him in his teaching. In his classes he is helping budding entrepreneurs start their own businesses. An important feature of start-ups is Storytelling. He uses the art of storytelling from script writing in his lectures to help his students tell better and more compelling stories. o    Nothing is wasted. The time and effort Costas has spent learning how to become a better script writer has translated in him using this learning in his lectures. Many people refuse to start because they fear wasting time, using resources etc. Nothing is wasted you simply have to think about repurposing your efforts, combining your skills and knowledge. There is always something to be gained from curiosity projects  o    In response to the question “who did you become by writing this book” Costas replied “his younger self” the 10 year old boy living in Athens with his friend the screwdriver. o    The element of surprise that accompanies us on Curiosity Journeys is very fulfilling, especially as we live in an era where we do not know how stuff works. o    Whilst I promised Costas that I would use his book to discover my next personal & professional itch he told me that he believes I already have it, coaching and doing this podcast. He is partially correct and I know there is more. His book is worth a reread.   Resources shared across this podcast & ways to get in touch 1.     Costas Andriopoulos is the author of Purposeful Curiosity, How asking the right questions can change your life. 2.     https://www.bayes.city.ac.uk/ 3.     https://www.linkedin.com/in/costasandriopoulos/?originalSubdomain=uk

We are witnessing exponentially rapid changes in technological advancement which  recall the dawn of the industrial age when newly harnessed electricity first lit up our houses and the assembly line sent Model Ts motoring down your street and out into the countryside to points heretofore unseen.During this period, the two men most responsible for these wonders drove off together with our nation's foremost naturalist to seek adventure and wrestle with the practical and theoretical challenges faced when agrarian societies broke way to usher in the marvels of innovation. The road trips were winding and intricate and they wove through New York State, New England, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee and points beyond. And when Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and John Burroughs rolled into your town in 1918 it must have felt like you were suddenly in the presence of The Beatles and Thor God of Thunder. These extensive camping treks were among the first American road trips, during a time when diners, motels and roadside assistance were not yet in existance. Good thing Tom and Henry were so handy with a wrench and a cylinder head. These epic trips are chronicled in Wes Davis's new book, American Journey: On The Road With Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and John Burroughs.Wes tells us how Ford began his career working for Edison's company, why Ford sent John Burroughs a free car and how the threesome first decided to take their conversations on the road. He also describes how their travel, conversations and friendship informed and influenced each of their world views and trajectories. We talk about their obsession with studying plant life, appreciating the power of moving water and stopping at abandoned mills to better understand how to find the tools and ingredients of invention within our natural world. We also address the gordian knot of Ford's altruism and antisemitism. Did his hateful published words encourage the fascism which led to the Holocaust? Wes says that the dark side of Ford's personality almost pulled him away from the project but that he approached the problem from Burroughs' point of view which was to push back and study the complexities of human nature.Plus, comedian Dylan Brody joins us to talk about his unique brand of smart, delibertate  comedy, how story-telling can lead to social change and his new solo show opening at The Hollywood Improv Lab, 'Thinking Allowed', over a decade in the making.Path Points of Interest:Wes DavisAmerican Journey: On The Road With Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and John Burroughs by Wes DavisWes Davis on AmazonDylan BrodyThinking Allowed at The Lab on 6/20Dylan Brody on IMDBDylan Brody on YouTubeDylan Brody on TwitterDylan Brody Linktree

Welcome to episode seventy-three of New Creation Conversations. It's a joy for me today to get to have a conversation with one of my favorite young scholars and ministers, Dr. Henry Spaulding III – better known to his family and friends as “Hank.” Hank is the Associate Campus Pastor and Assistant Professor of Theology at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. He's an alum of Trevecca Nazarene University, has Master's Degree in Theological Studies from Duke Divinity School, and has a PhD in Christian Ethics from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Hank and I talk about the unique challenges of campus ministry, but we also talk about his two writing projects – one out and one in process. The project that is out is The Just and Loving Gaze of God with Us: Paul's Apocalyptic Political Theology (published by Wipf and Stock). This book is an edited version of Hank's dissertation work and is an interesting look at the recent interest in the Apostle Paul by non-Christian political scholars and reflects on what they get right but also what they often misunderstand about Paul's political theology. The project that is forthcoming is Iconoclastic Sex – it is a quantitative and theological study of the problem of sex trafficking and Christian sexual ethics. Both are interesting works, and both are deeply connected to the vision of a new creation. It is always encouraging to me to get to connect with young scholars. I'm deeply thankful for those like Hank who have a passion for deep theological reflection and for church ministry. I'm thankful that people like him are picking up the baton and carrying it forward.

Burned by Chaos - Interview with Lise DeGuire Calming the Chaos welcomes Lise DeGuire, who is a clinical psychologist in private practice. She is the lone surviving child of gifted, unsettled, and iconoclastic parents. After being severely burned in a fire when she was a small child , Lise spent most of her childhood in the hospital, undergoing countless surgical procedures. She is the award winning author of her memoir, Flashback Girl: Lessons on Resilience from a Burn Survivor. In this interview, Lise tells us about her story, and helps us learn how we can develop resilience through the chaos of life. Lise introduces herself and states her goal, which is to help people have “resilient and beautiful lives” after trauma 3:37: Lise describes her story, beginning October of 1967 – A family Barbeque gone wrong, resulting in Lise having 65% of her 5-year-old body covered by 3rd degree burns. “I was hideous.” A long and incredibly painful journey of recovery from burn care followed through Lise's childhood 5:21: There were many sources of chaos that came from the fire, and her family 6:01: Lise describes her parents as “Iconoclastic” and presents the definition here. She also describes the love she has for her brother. “He was my best parent.” Chaos happened from all sorts of different perspectives that day, and beyond 8:30: Lise has been through a lot of chaos…and…she has survived! Her book was written to deliver that message to everyone in the world who has been through horrendous trauma such as she has: • Neglectful Parents • Bullied • Years of medical trauma, being alone and scared • Multiple untimely deaths in her family due to suicide 9:18: “And yet here I am, many decades later. And I have the kind of life that most people would be like, ‘I'd like her life!'” 9:56: Lise describes some steps people can take to move through tragic times with limited resources • Having the hope that you can recover, it can get better and things can turn out okay • Pain is inevitable….suffering is optional • Finding resources other than parents (brother, grandparents, friends, plastic surgeon) to help • Love is in the world….you just need to look around for it 12:02: Lise shares her memories of the burn incident, including parental neglect, invalidation and pain 14:25: The origins of the “Flashback Girl” Book “It was my nickname, and I didn't know it.” The burn picture of her as a girl was on the Internet! 16:26: Lise explains the writing of her book. “I knew I would write my memoir, but I had to wait until my parents were both dead.” First Memories of chaos 1. The felt experience in going through the physical treatment and pain of burns 2. The dissolution of my family 18:47: Here's how Lise found the “seeds of resilience” within herself at an early age..and… was able to help them grow, with the help of others, and therapy. She also credits herself as being gifted with “reasonably intelligent,” which helped her out. 21:03: Making it through school. “It was really hard.” “I was the most hideous child you had ever seen, and kids could be quite cruel.” It was the strangers who didn't really know her that were the most hurtful. 24:06: How Lise found Resilience: GOALS + M&M • Gratitude • Optimism • Active Coping • Love • Social Skills • Meaning Making 28:23: Lise takes you through her Website at www.lisedeguire.com and her book, “Flashback Girl” Awards: 2020 Nautalis 2021 Next Generation 2021 Living Now Book Award – Silver 30:34: We talk about the audio version of her book. “It's my oldest daughter who narrates the book.” Check out her Blog, and professional speaking engagements with her riveting topics, such as bullying, suicide, burn survival, trauma and more! The Beats. Iconoclastic representations of freedom. Romanticized. Criticized. Eulogized. But, what did it mean to be a Beat? "Howl" does not tell you because it is a biography of a poem. A poem that exercised the freedom of spoken word and thought. A poem that reinforced that same freedom as the subject of an obscenity trial. A poem that has spoken to people for nearly sixty years. This is our two-part examination of a film. "Howl" While seemingly simple due to its scripts written from transcripts, bears some examination to set the context for the time period in which it exists. John Helix sets that context for us in Part One as we talk about the movie. In Part Two, we will examine the facts and compare them to the film.

In this podcast, Jay chats to Judy Thompson who might be described as a "renegade" English language teacher. Judy has a unique approach to language teaching whereby she doesn't teach what she learned or what could be described as "traditional language teaching"; instead, she teaches what she does or what is naturally occurring in language and she has developed her own methodology for doing this. As such, her approach to language teaching is refreshingly authentic and also very effective. In this particular discussion, Jay and Judy pull apart 'intelligibility' in English which includes the sounds of English, as well as the importance of word and sentence stress. This conversation will be appropriate for both students and teachers alike. Enjoy!

‘Everything that is worthwhile and has substance, that is going to bear fruit and is sustainable takes time to build’  In this fascinating episode, Rob explores the methodology adopted by Norwich City, who are currently forging change as they nurture a philosophy based on the development of ‘homegrown talent’  You have to be brave to embark on a journey that is going to be fraught with challenges and Rob examines the underlying principles in use and how they can be used across the football profession.    KEY TAKEAWAYS  An iconoclast is a person who sees the world differently, has a specific view and perspective that differs from others.  It is a characteristic of people who are instigators of change, at the cutting edge and significant influencers.  Norwich City under the sporting director Stuart Webber made a decision to develop a philosophy based on developing homegrown talent, not on the outcome of individual matches.  They have made a decision about what was important to them not to buy success but to develop young players, ‘homegrown talent’ and enable participation in matches where points are at stake.  They are demonstrating their iconoclastic activity and bravery in the path they are forging in football currently.  You have to be brave to embark on a journey that is going to be fraught with challenges and Norwich made a decision to play the long game.  Everything that is worthwhile and has substance, that is going to bear fruit and is sustainable takes time to build  It requires the trust and support of those who choose to follow the team, the trust and support of the employers and a culture where everybody is on board  The value and experience they gain as they improve, as part of the evolutionary journey are vital.  Norwich acknowledge the inconsistency and living through the  mistakes as part of the journey with good communication vital to the continuing process  Successful communication is about meaningful truthful conversations.  We produce players who are athletes and resilient but young players have limited opportunities due to the pressures of point-scoring, Norwich is being iconoclastic in their approach, playing the long game.  Are you as a coach, leader or manager brave enough to make those types of decisions and be long term?     BEST MOMENTS  ‘You need a culture where everybody is on board’  ‘The quantity of individual coaches has increased but the quality is decreasing’  ‘Just because someone has been a world-class player doesn’t mean they will be a good coach or manager’  ‘Nothing that endures, nothing  that will last a long time, that will transcend one generation to another is built quickly’     VALUABLE RESOURCES  Leader Manager Coach Podcast  Iconoclast: A Neuroscientist Reveals How to Think Differently book by Greg Berns  The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People book by Stephen Covey    ABOUT THE HOST  Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. Though the woman that Canter rescued, Siela Shade, was taken into custody by Fleet authorities only 30 minutes after her rescue, the Signal was able to conduct a short interview before her detention. The facts of that interview have been since confirmed through a combination fo DIA Request and archival research, and though a judge-ordered stay prevents the Signal from running Shade's words as they were delivered to us directly, this publication retains the legal right to publish, in broad terms, the shape of that conversation. According to Shade, a civilization set towards the galactic south known as the Principality of Kesh is currently embroiled in its own internal conflict, one that has landed right on the door mat of the Divine Fleet. At the heart of that dispute is the question of intervention and self-determination, two topics well-trodden inside of the Fleet in recent days. While the Principality itself has not splintered, one of its most important arms--the Rapid Evening, a group of intelligence agents, saboteurs, and enforcers--has entered into a civil conflict. On one side, an increidbly powerful, predictive AI known as Crystal Palace who is tasked with maintaining the stability of life in the Principality and the safety of its citizens above all else. On the other, the rebels Demani Dusk and Grey Gloaming, former agents of the organization who now lead a faction of deserters and objectors against an encroaching armada of Rapid Evening forces. The root of this conflict, per Shade, is a debate over how (and whether) the Rapid Evening should have intervened into the Divine Fleet's own constitutional crisis. While Shade offered more context for the battle, additional reporting could not verify her claims. Fleet officials did not respond to comment regarding these or other questions. But the fundamental truth remains the same: On the edge of the Quire System, as the Twilight Mirage collapses inward, yet another fight rages over the autonomy of the Fleet and freedom of our people.   Hosted by Austin Walker (@austin_walker) Featuring  Ali Acampora (@ali_west) and Jack de Quidt (@notquitereal) Produced by Ali Acampora (@ali_west) Cover Art by Craig Sheldon (@shoddyrobot) Episode description by Austin Walker Music by Jack de Quidt

The History of the Christian Church

The title of this episode is “What a Mess!”As is often the case, we start by backing up & reviewing material we've already covered so we can launch into the next leg of our journey in Church History.Anglo-Saxon missionaries to Germany had received the support of Charles Martel, a founder of the Carolingian dynasty. Martel supported these missions because of his desire to expand his rule eastwards into Bavaria. The Pope was grateful for his support, and for Charles' victory over the Muslims at the Battle of Tours. But Martel fell afoul of papal favor when he confiscated Church lands. At first, the Church consented to his seizing of property to produce income to stave off the Muslim threat. But once that threat was dealt with, he refused to return the lands. Adding insult to injury, Martel ignored the Pope's request for help against the Lombards taking control of a good chunk of Italy. Martel denied assistance because at that time the Lombards were his allies. But a new era began with the reign of Martel's heir, Pippin or as he's better known, Pepin III.Pepin was raised in the monastery of St. Denis near Paris. He & his brother were helped by the church leader Boniface to carry out a major reform of the Frank church. These reforms of the clergy and church organization brought about a renewal of religious and intellectual life and made possible the educational revival associated with the greatest of the Carolingian rulers, Charlemagne & his Renaissance. In 751, Pepin persuaded Pope Zachary to allow Boniface to anoint him, King of the Franks, supplanting the Merovingian dynasty. Then, another milestone in church-state relations passed with Pope Stephen II appealing to Pepin for aid against the Lombards. The pope placed Rome under the protection of Pepin and recognized him and his sons as “Protectors of the Romans.”As we've recently seen, all of this Church-State alliance came to a focal point with the crowning of Charlemagne as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in AD 800. For some time the Popes in Rome had been looking for a way to loosen their ties to the Eastern Empire & Constantinople. Religious developments in the East provided the Popes an opportunity to finally break free. The Iconoclastic Controversy dominating Eastern affairs gave the Popes one more thing to express their disaffection with. We'll take a closer look at the controversy later. For now, it's enough to say the Eastern Emperor Leo III banned the use of icons as images of religious devotion in AD 726. The supporters of icons ultimately prevailed but only after a century of bitter and at times violent dispute. Pope Gregory II rejected Leo's edict banning icons and flaunted his disrespect for the Emperor's authority. Gregory's pompous and scathing letter to the Emperor was long on bluff but a dramatic statement of his rejection of secular rulers' meddling in Church affairs. Pope Gregory wrote: “Listen! Dogmas are not the business of emperors but of pontiffs.”The reign of what was regarded by the West as a heretical dynasty in the East gave the Pope the excuse he needed to separate from the East and find a new, devoted and orthodox protector. The alliance between the papacy and the Carolingians represents the culmination of that quest, and opened a new and momentous chapter in the history of European medieval Christianity. In response to Pope Stephen's appeal for help against the Lombards, Pepin recovered the Church's territories in Italy and gave them to the pope, an action known as the 'Donation of Pepin'. This confirmed the legal status of the Papal States. At about the same time, the Pope's claim to the rule of Italy and independence from the Eastern Roman Empire was reinforced by the appearance of one of the great forgeries of the Middle Ages, the Donation of Constantine. This spurious document claimed Constantine the Great had given Rome and the western part of the Empire to the bishop of Rome when he moved the capital of the empire to the East. The Donation was not exposed as a forgery until the 15th Century. The concluding act in the popes' attempt to free themselves from Constantinople came on Christmas Day 800 when Pope Leo III revived the Empire in the West by crowning Charlemagne as Holy Roman Emperor. It's rather humorous, as one wag put it – the Holy Roman Empire was neither Holy, nor Roman, and can scarcely be called an Empire.Charlemagne's chief scholar was the British-born Alcuin who'd been master of the cathedral school in York. He was courted by Charlemagne to make his capital at Aachen on the border between France & Germany, Europe's new center of education & scholarship. Alcuin did just that. If the school at Aachen didn't plant the seeds that would later flower in the Renaissance it certainly prepared the soil for them.Alcuin profoundly influenced the intellectual, cultural and religious direction of the Carolingian Empire, as the 300-some extant letters he wrote reveal. His influence is best seen in the manuscripts of the school at Tours where he later became abbot. His influence is also demonstrated in his educational writings, revision of the Biblical text, commentaries and the completion of his version of Church liturgy. He standardized spelling and writing, reformed missionary practice, and contributed to the organizing of church regulations. Alcuin was the leading theologian in the struggle against the heresy of Adoptionism. Adoptionists said Jesus was simply a human being who God adopted & MADE a Son. Alcuin was a staunch defender of Christian orthodoxy and the authority of the Church, the pre-eminence of the Roman Bishop and of Charlemagne's sacred position as Emperor. He died in 804.The time at which Alcuin lived certainly needed the reforms he brought & he was the perfect agent to bring them. From the palace school at Aachen, a generation of his students went out to head monastic and cathedral schools throughout the land. Even though Charlemagne's Empire barely outlived its founder, the revival of education and religion associated with he and Alcuin brightened European culture throughout the bleak and chaotic period that followed. This Carolingian Renaissance turned to classical antiquity and early Christianity for its models. The problem is, there was only one Western scholar who still knew Greek, the Irishman John Scotus Erigena. Still, the manuscripts produced during this era form the base from which modern historians gain a picture of the past. It was these classical texts, translated from Greek into Latin that fueled the later European Renaissance. The intellectual vigor stimulated by the Carolingian Renaissance and the political dynamism of the revived Empire stimulated new theological activity. There was discussion about the continuing Iconoclastic problem in the East. Political antagonism between the Eastern and the Carolingian emperors led to an attack by theologians in the West on the practices and beliefs of the Orthodox Church in the East. These controversial works on the 'Errors of the Greeks' flourished during the 9th C as a result of the Photian Schism. In 858, Byzantine Emperor Michael III deposed the Patriarch Ignatius I of Constantinople, replacing him with a lay scholar named Photius I, AKA Photius the Great. The now deposed Ignatius appealed to Pope Nicholas I to restore him while Photius asked the Pope to recognize his appointment. The Pope ordered the restoration of Ignatius & relations between East & West sunk further. The issue ended in 867 when Pope Nicholas died & Photius was deposed.Latin theologians also criticized the Eastern church for its different method of deciding the date of Easter, the difference in the way clergy cut their hair, and the celibacy of priests. The Eastern Church allowed priests to marry while requiring monks to be celibate, whereas the Western Church required celibacy of both.Another major doctrinal debate was the Filioque [Filly-o-quay] Controversy we briefly touched on in an earlier episode. Now, before I get a barrage of emails, there's debate among scholars over the pronunciation of Filioque. Some say “Filly-oak” others “Filly-o-quay.” Take your pick. The point is, the Controversy dealt with the wording of the Nicene Creed as related to the Holy Spirit. The original Creed said the Holy Spirit proceeded from the Father. A bit later, the Western Church altered the wording a bit so as to affirm the equality of the Son of God with the Father. So they said the Spirit proceeded from both Father & Son. Filioque is Latin for “and the Son” thus giving the name of the controversy. The Eastern Church saw this addition as dangerous tampering with the Creed and refused to accept it while the Filioque clause became a standard part of what was considered normative doctrine in the West.Another major discussion arose over the question of predestination. A Carolingian monk named Gottschalk, who studied Augustine's theology carefully, was the first to teach 'double predestination'; the belief that some people are predestined to salvation, while others are predestined to damnation. He was tried and condemned for his views by 2 synods and finally imprisoned by the Archbishop of Rheims. Gottschalk died 20 years later, holding his views to the end.The other major theological issue of the Carolingian era concerned the Lord's Supper. The influential Abbot of Corbie wrote a treatise titled On the Body and Blood of the Lord. This was the first clear statement of a doctrine of the 'real presence' of Christ's body and blood in the Communion elements, later called the doctrine of “transubstantiation,” an issue that will become a heated point in the debate between the Roman Church & Reformers. The reforms of King Pepin and Pope Boniface focused attention on priests. It was clear to all that clergy ought to lead lives beyond reproach. That synod after synod during the 6th, 7th, & 8th Cs had to make such a major issue of this demonstrated the need for reform. Among the violations warned against were the rejection of celibacy, gluttony, drunkenness, tawdry relationships with women, hunting, carrying arms & frequenting taverns.Monastic developments at this time were significant. The emphasis was on standardization and centralization. Between 813 and 17 a revised Benedictine rule was adopted for the whole of the Carolingian Empire. Another Benedict, a monk from Burgundy, was responsible for an ultra-strict regimen. Charlemagne's successor, Louis the Pious, appointed Benedict the overseer of all monasteries in the realm, and a few years later his revised Benedictine rule was made obligatory for all monasteries. Sadly, with little long-term effect. When Louis succeeded Charlemagne, the Pope was able to regain his independence, following a long domination by the Emperor. The imperial theocracy of Charlemagne's reign would have yielded a 'state church' as already existed in the East. But the papacy stressed the superiority of spiritual power over the secular. This was reinforced by the forged Donation of Constantine with its emphasis on papal pre-eminence in the governing of the Empire, not just the Church. In the middle of the 9th C, priests at Rheims produced another remarkable forgery, the False Decretals. Accomplished with great inventiveness, the Decretals were designed to provide a basis in law which protected the rights of bishops. They included the bogus Donation of Constantine and became a central part of the canon of medieval law. It shored up papal claims to supremacy in church affairs over secular authority. The first Pope to make use of the False Decretals was Nicholas I. He recognized the danger of a Church dominated by civil rulers and was determined to avert this by stressing that the church's government was centered on Rome, not Constantinople, and certainly not in some lesser city like Milan or Ravenna. From the late 9th until the mid-11th C, Western Christendom was beset by a host of major challenges that left the region vulnerable. The Carolingian Empire fragmented, leaving no major military power to defend Western Europe. Continued attacks by Muslims in the S, a fresh wave of attacks by the Magyars in the E, and incessant raids by the Norsemen all over the Empire, turned the shards of the empire into splinters. One contemporary lamented, “Once we had a king, now we have kinglets!” For many Western Europeans, it seemed the end of the world was at hand. The popes no longer had Carolingian rulers as protectors. So the papacy became increasingly involved in the power struggles among the nobility for the rule of Italy. Popes became partisans of one political faction or another; sometimes willingly, other times coerced. But the cumulative result was spiritual and moral decline. For instance, Pope Stephen VI took vengeance on the preceding pope by having his body disinterred and brought before a synod, where it was propped up in a chair for trial. Following conviction, the body was thrown into the Tiber River. Then, within a year Stephen himself was overthrown. He was strangled while in prison. There was a near-complete collapse of civil order in Europe during the 10th C. Church property was ransacked by invaders or fell into the hands of the nobility. Noblemen treated churches and monasteries as their private property to dispose of as they wished. The clergy became indifferent to duty. Their illiteracy & immorality grew. The 10th C was a genuine dark age, at least as far as the condition of the Church was concerned. Without imperial protection, popes became helpless playthings for the nobility, who fought to gain control by appointing relatives and political favorites. A chronicle by the German bishop of Cremona paints a graphic picture of sexual debauchery in the Church.Though there were incompetent & immoral popes during this time, they continued to be respected throughout the West. Bishoprics and abbeys were founded by laymen after they obtained the approval of the papal court. Pilgrimages to Rome hardly slackened during this age, as Christians visited the sacred sites of the West; that is, the tombs of Peter and Paul, as well as a host of other relics venerated in there. At the lowest ebb of the 10th C, during the reign of Pope John XII, from 955-64, a major change in Italian politics affected the papacy. An independent & capable German monarchy emerged. This Saxon dynasty began with the election of Henry I and continued with his son, Otto I, AKA Otto the Great .Otto developed a close relationship with the Church in Germany. Bishops and abbots were given the rights and honor of high nobility.  The church received huge tracts of land. Thru this alliance with the Church, Otto aimed to forestall the rebellious nobles of his kingdom. But the new spiritual aristocracy created by Otto wasn't hereditary. Bishops & abbots couldn't “pass on” their privileges to their successors. Favor was granted by the King to whomever he chose. Thus, their loyalty could be counted on more readily. In fact, the German bishops contributed money and arms to help the German kings expand into Italy, what is now the regions of East Germany & Poland.Otto helped raise the papacy out of the quagmire of Italian politics. His entrance into Italian affairs was a fateful decision. He marched south into Italy to marry Adelaide of Burgundy and declare himself king of the Lombards. Ten years later, he again marched south at the invitation of Pope John XII. In February of 962, the Pope tried a renewal of the Holy Roman Empire by crowning Otto and Adelaide in St Peter's. But the price paid by the pope for Otto's support was another round of interference in Church affairs. For the next 300 years, each new German monarch followed up his election by making a march to Rome to be crowned as Emperor. But at this point, it wasn't so much Popes who made Emperors as it was Emperors who made Popes. And when a pope ran afoul of the ruler, he was conveniently labeled ‘anti-pope' & deposed, to be replaced by the next guy. It was the age of musical chairs in Rome; whoever grabs the papal chair when the music stops gets to sit. But when the Emperor instructs the band to play again, whoever's in the chair has to stand and the game starts all over again. Lest you think I'm overstating the case, in 963 Otto returned to Rome, convened a synod which found Pope John guilty of a list of sordid crimes and deposed him. In his place, they chose a layman, who received all of his ecclesiastical orders in a single day to become Pope Leo VIII. He managed to sit in the Pope's chair less than a year before the music started all over again.
