Originally released on the 27th of May 2015!!!  (The original episode contained) In episode 20 of the podcast we catch up with what each other has been watching and/or listening to since last we recorded.  Liam tells of his experiences in America. Next we look at the connections between some of the lost classic Doctor Who serials and a landfill in a New Mexico desert (audio segements came from ATARI: Game Over, a documentary made in 2014).  I reference some facts that The Tin-Dog Podcast's host Michael, has made in some of his past podcasts (I don't know which one, but I'm sure they exist). Once we hit the news, Liam shares his frustration with Disney and their lack of consideration towards Star Wars fans for what they'll be doing with the continuity established in the book series once episode VII comes out in December.  We discuss the news and future releases from Big Finish regarding Torchwood, Doom Coalistion, The Worlds of Big Finish (extreme crossover release) and it's potiential marketing sceme.  When we get to the reviews we first finish discussing The Two Doctors classic story, focusing on audio only, but my explaining of what happened visually to add clarification to the story.  Next we discuss the Big Finish releases: The Defectors - by Nick Briggs; Last of the Cybermen - by Alan Barnes; Death Match - by Matt Fitton; Suburban Hell - by Alan Barnes; The Well-Mannered War - by Gareth Roberts, adapted by John Dorney; Damaged Goods - by Russell T. Davies, adapted by Jonathan Morris. During the review of Damaged Goods we get into the a second discussion/debate on Doctor Who "Cannon" or what is and what is not cannon, and then back to Star Wars cannon and not cannon.  I make a reference to @DoctorSquee's Gallifrey Stands Podcast interview with Paul Cornell. We finish up the show reviewing Jago & Litefoot sereis 9, Blake's 7 Truth and Lies, and Terrahawks Vol. 1, before a quick Game of Thrones discussion to end episode 20. Stay tuned for more Doctor Who goodness, including monthly Big Finish reviews, audio commentary, retro-reviews, the DWAP "Rassilon Seal of Approval" and beyond!

Screenwriting legend Zak Penn talks about how he got so savvy in the business of show.  We talk about how coming to LA and scouting out the city geared him up for his big move after college and his sale of “The Last Action Hero” started him on a 35 year journey of being one of Hollywood's most sought after writers. We talk about the good times with Speilberg, JJ Abrams, Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds, & Dwayne Johnson and we talk about the bad times with others. Bio: Zak Penn's career began as a screenwriter when he sold his first script, LAST ACTION HERO, at the age of twenty-three. Since then, Penn has become known for his work on numerous films based on Marvel comics, including X-MEN 2 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, ELEKTRA, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and THE AVENGERS. He has also dabbled in other genres, writing scripts for disparate films such as P.C.U., BEHIND ENEMY LINES and SUSPECT ZERO.Penn's shift into independent cinema began when he collaborated with his idol, Werner Herzog, on the script for RESCUE DAWN. Penn directed and co-starred with Herzog in INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS, his award-winning “hoax” documentary about the legendary director's attempts to make a film about the equally legendary monster. THE GRAND, Penn's second completely improvised film, was his third film with Herzog, and featured an eclectic cast including Woody Harrelson, David Cross, Ray Romano, Cheryl Hines, Dennis Farina and Gabe Kaplan. In addition, Penn co-wrote the original story for ANTZ and produced the animated film OSMOSIS JONES. He has also acted in a number of independent films, including STAR MAPS and CHUCK & BUCK. His first foray into television was the critically acclaimed original series ALPHAS starring David Strathairn. Penn directed the documentary ATARI: GAME OVER for Xbox Entertainment Studios.More recently, Penn adapted the New York Times bestselling novel READY PLAYER ONE for Warner Bros. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film was released in 2018. Penn also co-wrote the script for the action comedy FREE GUY, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer. The film is directed by Shawn Levy and was released in August of 2021.

Award-winning screenwriter, Zak Penn joins us to discuss finding early success at age 23, developing his craft, and working with with Stephen Spielberg on READY PLAYER ONE. Guest Biography Zak Penn’s career began as a screenwriter when he sold his first script, LAST ACTION HERO, at the age of twenty-three. Since then, Penn has become known for his work on numerous films based on Marvel comics, including X-MEN 2 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, ELEKTRA, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, and most recently, THE AVENGERS. He has also dabbled in other genres, writing scripts for disparate films such as P.C.U., BEHIND ENEMY LINES and SUSPECT ZERO. Penn’s shift into independent cinema began when he collaborated with his idol, Werner Herzog, on the script for RESCUE DAWN. Penn directed and co-starred with Herzog in INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS, his award-winning “hoax” documentary about the legendary director’s attempts to make a film about the equally legendary monster. THE GRAND, Penn’s second completely improvised film, was his third film with Herzog, and featured an eclectic cast including Woody Harrelson, David Cross, Ray Romano, Cheryl Hines, Dennis Farina and Gabe Kaplan. Penn directed the documentary ATARI: GAME OVER for Xbox Entertainment Studios. Penn most recently adapted the New York Times bestselling novel READY PLAYER ONE for Warner Bros. Directed by Stephen Spielberg, the film will be released in March 2018. Penn is currently working on a script for Warner Bros set in THE MATRIX universe. Show notes: http://www.inspiredmoney.fm/036 In this episode, you will learn: Why adversity can be helpful in your career. How there are so many factors outside of one's control in the life of a screenwriter. The importance of enjoying the process of your work or whatever it is that you do. For a bit of a shake-up, we've decided that 2017 we will be going through the A to Z of Massive Attack. Each fortnight Mitch and Joe will pick two suggestions each per letter, pop them in a hat and draw one out to be the discussion topic for the episode.   So, starting with the letter A, as it seemed like the best place to start, this time we cover Atari. We watch the documentary "Atari: Game Over" that looks at the urban legend that a surplus of "E.T. The Extra Terrestrial" cartridges were buried in the New Mexico desert following the video game crash of 1983, and the archaeological dig 30 years later to find the truth, as well as the history of Atari the company, and the lives of the designers behind the games.   We also look back at our own experiences with the iconic Atari 2600 console and reminisce of a simpler time in gaming when all you needed was a joystick and a single red button.

Next we look at the connections between some of the lost classic Doctor Who serials and a landfill in a New Mexico desert (audio segements came from ATARI: Game Over, a documentary made in 2014). We finish up the show reviewing Jago & Litefoot sereis 9, Blake's 7 Truth and Lies, and Terrahawks Vol. 1, before a quick Game of Thrones discussion to end episode 20. WARNING: This week's episode is about the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Avengers: Age of Ultron; while spoilers are earnestly avoided, no guarantees can be made. Proceed with caution.   Week in Geek: Well, they both saw Avengers: Age of Ultron, so they can't talk about that. Andrew watched the documentaries Get Lamp and Atari: Game Over (again) while Dan played the recently released nostalgia-show, Strider.   Watching Order: Dan and Andrew give you the rundown of what you need to see before you see Avengers: Age of Ultron; just the bare necesseties.   Age of Ultron: Andrew and Dan don't review the new movie, per se. Instead they talk about what it does right, what it does not as right, and what it's doing that is interesting.   Agents of SHIELD: Dan and Andrew discuss how well Marvel is using their tv show, Agents of SHIELD, but then wonder if the payoff is worth it in the long-run.   Question of the Geek: What has been your favorite entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far? Why? You may leave your answer as a comment on the page for this episode at forall.libsyn.com. Built to Play

Built to Play is amping up the disappointment, as we take on failure. That's a failure to play and a failure to learn, starting with why play video games in the first place.  From Takeshi's Challenge. We suck at video games, as a species. Yes, some of us are amazing at Street Fighter, and that Chinese team won five million dollars in Dota 2, but on average most of us lose more than we succeed. In Call of Duty, you likely failed more levels than you won. In Super Meat Boy, people come close to throwing their controllers across the room in frustration. Rage-quitting is a word most players recognize and have experienced. So why do we play? Download here. Subscribe on iTunes.Subscribe on Stitcher. Jesper Juul, author of the Art of Failure: An Essay on the Pain of Playing Video Games, says that it comes down enjoying the game's basis, while being able to dismiss it. It's just a game after all. But that's not entirely true either. If people really didn't care about video games, he explains, they wouldn't groan when they lose, or throw the controller across the room after a bad run in Dark Souls. To some extent we want to know that we might lose in a game, if only to prove that we're better than it. It's a matter of how much failure we're willing to take. Jesper tells us all about being a sore loser in Starcraft, why the New York Post thinks soccer is a dumb sport, and how games rarely ask us to fail. Starts at 26:30. Courtesy Actual Sunlight We may lose a lot in video games, but video games rarely give us a good reason to fail.  Screwing up in a video game feels like a glitch in the process. Mario saves the princess, even if you jumped into that Goomba, or fell off the cliff. BJ Blazkowicz blows up Hitler in Wolfenstein, regardless if a Nazi shoots you five minutes into the game. The player messed up. The character saves the day. Sometimes, there are exceptions. In Shadow of the Colossus, the hero's victory turns out to be for nought, and he turns out to be the true monster. But pyrrhic victories are few and far between, and outright failures are awkward to create. When the player beats the bad guy, only to discover the world's still ending, it rarely feels right.  But that's not to say people haven't tried. _Actual Sunlight_is about Evan Winters, a 30-ish year old man working in communications. Evan has depression, and continually makes terrible choices. He can't help himself a lot of the time, and ends up stuck in a rut. In Actual Sunlight, you're forced to encounter his decisions, and then succumb to his inability to correct his own mistakes. Evan is in many ways, a failure. Actual Sunlight's designer, Will O'Neill, joins us to talk about how games treat characters who are stuck in their ways, and aren't world-saving heroes.  Will tells us about Actual Sunlight's expression of realism, his own experience with loss and depression, and why there's still hope underneath it all. Check in 40:20. **Actual Sunlight is available on Steam and on its website. ** Cardinal Rule restaurant in Parkdale, Toronto back in 2012. But the future isn't so dim, so long as you're not producer Arman Aghbali at Trivia Night. Our producer is terrible at trivia. He confuses Dirty Dancing with Footloose. He thought the West Wing was about a hospital. He knows David Bowie as the cool science guy from The Prestige. So he went to meet up with some experts, and watched them nearly lose the whole game. But some golden VHS tapes are just worth fighting for. Russel Harder hosts a feisty game of trivia at Toronto's Cardinal Rule every Wednesday night, and the Cunning Stunts were on a winning streak when Arman dropped in. **This short doc was made back in February for a Ryerson University documentary course.
