How Did They Get There
Ep. 43 - Janet Grillo

How Did They Get There

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 6, 2023 68:06

Janet Grillo's latest directorial effort — The Warm Season — is a testament to being conscious in a changing time. It is true the landscape of film has evolved over the years; however, it's the consistency of Janet's track record as a multifaceted filmmaker which exudes the contrast between black and white; open or closed; and aware vs. uncertain. After graduating from Wesleyan and NYU-Tisch, the New Jersey native joined the Playwright's Workshop Lab at the Circle Repertory Company, where she continued to develop her eye for taste as Assistant Literary Manager. She joined New Line Cinema in the mid-eighties, where she rose through the ranks from Story Analyst to Senior Vice President of East Coast Production and earned her reputation as a force in the world of film production and development. From discovering director Reggie Hudlin (Marshall; Django Unchained; Sidney) and developing the game-changing House Party franchise with him (the first of which grossed $25M and received the Audience Award at Sundance); to producing and developing hip hop classics like Hangin' with the Homeboys (John Leguizamo's film-lead debut which received the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award), Pump up the Volume, and the directorial debut of Ted Demme — Who's the Man — Janet sensed the sentiment she was feeling on New York City subways and helped give a voice to hip hop culture using the medium of film. A chance encounter with David O. Russell at Sundance led to a flurry of incredible film projects, including Spanking the Monkey, his feature film directorial debut which won the Audience Award at the same festival; Flirting with Disaster; Three Kings and I Heart Huckabees, the latter of which she also acted in. Other filmmakers Janet developed include Seth Tsvi Rosenfeld (Brother's Kiss), Alan Taylor (Palookaville), Myra Paci (Searching for Paradise) and the intriguing Frank Whaley in his writing and directing debut — Joe the King. Janet's impact as an activist for autism awareness can be traced to her role as Executive Producer of the esteemed documentary Autism: The Musical, the subject of which was entitled “The Miracle Project.” The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2007; was subsequently picked up by HBO, and led her to win an Emmy Award for Best Non-Fiction Feature the following year. It can also be seen in her feature film directorial debut, Fly Away, starring Ashley Rickards and Beth Broderick; and Jack of the Red Hearts (AnnaSophia Robb; Famke Janssen; Taylor Richardson). We discussed living in upstate New York; her approach toward developing some of the most incredible filmmakers in Hollywood; translating personal experience into her own directorial projects; and the state of independent film in the landscape of streaming.Opening Credits: The Underscore Orkestra - Blue Draggish I Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 United States (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US); Dee Yan-Key - Aimless I Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0); Closing Credits: The Underscore Orkestra - Versipelllis I Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 United States (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US).

Today's movie is I Heart Huckabees directed by David O. Russell.Casey sums up this movie best during our conversation: I Heart Huckabees is about ideas, not people. Characters serve as representations of different types of philosophies, and interact with each other in strange and often hilarious ways. This is definitely not a movie for everyone, but you have to admire David O. Russell's commitment to the concept. No attempt has been made to make this movie appeal to a broad audience, and for that we're glad. We'll see you next week for What's Eating Gilbert Grape. This is a public episode. Geri Cole turns it over to David O. Russell for a conversation with Adam McKay about his latest project, DON'T LOOK UP. David O. Russell is the Oscar- and Writers Guild Award-nominated writer and director best known for his work on titles like FLIRTING WITH DISASTER, THREE KINGS, I HEART HUCKABEES, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, AMERICAN HUSTLE, and most recently, JOY. Adam McKay is a writer, director, comedian, and co-founder of the comedy group Upright Citizens Brigade. He kicked off his film & TV career in the '90s as a head writer for SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE before rising to fame in the 2000s for his collaborations with fellow comedian and SNL alum Will Ferrell, with whom he co-wrote the hit comedies ANCHORMAN, STEP BROTHERS, and THE OTHER GUYS. In the 2010s, McKay ventured into more dramatic waters as co-writer & director of the 2015 dramedy/biopic THE BIG SHORT—for which he and Charles Randolph received the Academy and Writers Guild Awards for Adapted Screenplay—and as writer & director of the 2019 Oscar- and Writers Guild Award-nominated Dick Cheney biopic VICE.   His most recent project is DON'T LOOK UP, a comedy-drama and cautionary tale written and directed by McKay and based on a story by himself and David Sirota. The film follows two astronomers who discover a comet orbiting within the solar system and which is set on a direct collision course with Earth. The problem? No one really seems to care. Turns out warning mankind about a planet-killer the size of Mount Everest is an inconvenient fact to navigate. The astronomers embark on a media tour that takes them from the office of an indifferent President and her sycophantic son and Chief of Staff to the airwaves of upbeat morning show The Daily Rip. With only six months until the comet makes impact, the team struggles to manage the 24-hour news cycle and gain the attention of the social media-obsessed public—before it's too late. DON'T LOOK UP was released in December 2021 and is available to stream on Netflix. --- Before it was a podcast, OnWriting was a print publication. Check out OnWriting: The Print Archives. In this episode, recommended by viewer (etc.) Monique Birtwell, Keith and Ev dive into David O. Russell's 2004 cult classic "I Heart Huckabees." Differentiating understandings of reincarnation from Hinduism and evaluating the differences in different religions' approaches to death, they sketch a picture of samsara as cyclic existence. Hitting on toxic relationships, I Heart Huckabees, and the joys and pains of metacognition and confirmation bias, they cycle through the podcast opening many questions, only answered with many additional questions. This time, we look at a modern cult classic with our Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow film review and along the way ask, why is Angelina Jolie so prominent in the film's marketing? How influential was the “digital backlot?” And, was resurrecting Laurence Olivier a smart move? Let's dive in… Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow Cast and Crew Directed by Kerry Conran: Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was Conran's directorial debut and remains his only credit as a director. Conran has remained relatively quiet since Sky Captain's release having only directed a commercial for Coca-Cola and a short film that premiered in 2012. Jude Law as Sky Captain/Joseph Sullivan: By 2004, Law had become an international movie star and in that year alone, he had starred in I Heart Huckabees, Alfie, Closer, The Aviator and A Series of Unfortunate Events. His casting as the titular 'Sky Captain' was seen by many as his foray into adventure films. Gwyneth Paltrow as Polly Perkins: At the time, her career had begun to wane following her Oscar win for Shakespeare in Love. Following that performance, she starred in Bounce, Shallow Hal and View From the Top. Her casting was announced at San Diego Comic Con in order to drum up interest for the film. Giovanni Ribisi as Dex: Ribisi has a knack for finding quirky yet entertaining films and he actually signed on for this film without reading a script. He was shown a teaser trailer created by Conran and one of his producers in order to nail Ribisi. Angelina Jolie as Frank Cook: Due to her commitments filming Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life, she could only be on set for three days. She helped to add credibility to the film following the casting of Law and Paltrow. Also starring: Michael Gambon as Editor Paley and Bai Ling as The Mysterious Woman The Rise of the Digital Backlot If you've watched Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, you probably noticed the film has an odd color palate and design. This is due to Conran utilizing what became known as a “digital backlot.” Conran is a fan of cinema of the 1930's and 40's as well as animation techniques. Following his apprenticeship in a Disney animator program, he thought many of the techniques he learned could be applied to a live-action film, but upon realizing that many studios would not be willing to take a chance on a first-time director with a brand new concept of filming, he decided to make the film himself. He spent many years in the 90's working on a Macintosh computer and even produced a crude teaser trailer with homemade bluescreens. This trailer was then shown to a friend of Conran who in turn showed it to an additional friend and agreed to produce the film. This producer and Conran would spend the next ten years working together in an attempt to get their film onto the big screen. Prior to shooting with a full cast, Conran shot the film himself and then created moving storyboards in order for his actors to understand how scenes would unfold and how to move during these scenes. In an effort to save costs, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was shot in a total of 26 days utilizing entirely blue or green screens and incredibly minimal set design. The short production time allowed for the crew to work on the complex visual effects which mostly included overlaying the live action footage with the previously rendered animation from Conran's prior shoot without his principal actors. Conran noted he would end up working 18 – 20 hour days in order to help create the 2,000+ visual effects shots seen in the film. In addition to this new style of filming, Conran also wanted to digitally resurrect a deceased actor for the role of Dr. Totenkopf, Laurence Olivier. This was a challenge due to the fact that Olivier had been dead for 13 years at the time of filming and the fact that this had never been attempted before in a major motion picture. Conran and his team mostly used footage and audio from Oliv...

On the podcast this week, Steven and Sean have hired some existential detectives to help solve the mysteries that are plaguing them in the David O. Russell film from 2004, I Heart Huckabees. Did you know that Shania Twain hates mayo? Like, totally hates it. Can’t eat a single bit of it. She can’t have a chicken salad at all. Be prepared to move out of the way if you ever give her any because she’s going to be throwing up all over you the next moment. We give her tuna fish sandwiches instead, but she’s not buying it. So we tell her we’re allergic to mayo (a total lie, by the way) and eat a couple of them to make her feel better. She eats one and a half of them—one and a half!—before realizing… they’re chicken salad. Mayo aside, we’re talking about a movie that’s got some real depth and layers to it. Albert Markovski goes to see a husband and wife team of existential detectives because he’s been having some peculiar coincidences that he just can’t figure out. They’re driving him a little batty! Not to mention he’s having difficulties at work because some punk named Brad Stand is basically trying to take over his environmental non-profit. He gets teamed up with a disaffected fireman to help him figure out the cause of his troubles. There’s a… well, there’s a lot of heady stuff that goes on with this film. How can someone condense it all into this meager space in the show notes of a podcast episode? Instead, I want to tell you this story about Shania Twain and chicken salad sandwiches. Did you know she hates them? She can’t eat mayo. No mayo! This is an interesting film in David O. Russell’s oeuvre. It’s the last film he made that could be considered a straight-up comedy (so far), and yet it’s a peculiar one. It’s unique and eccentric. Then he went off and did heavy as hell things like The Fighter and American Hustle. It’s a fun one, though. It flew way under the radar when it came out, so it’s been overlooked by many. It evolves into a story with real emotion and consequences as its running time progresses. By the end of it, you’ll probably find yourself asking what exactly does everything mean? Oh, and did we ever tell you about the Shania Twain-mayo story? Movie Meltdown - Episode 425 This is an episode years in the making... we sit down for not only a group discussion of Lindsay Anderson's O Lucky Man!, but we also talk with the star of the movie – MALCOLM McDOWELL! We get his thoughts on this often over-looked film as well as his role in creating the project and his relationship with the director. Plus we feature a bonus segment with one of the co-stars of the film Jeremy Bulloch (aka Boba Fett). And as we finally come to terms with just how you lose the spirit of life, we also mention... Ladybird, The Florida Project, Easy, Mother!, Judex, The Boxtrolls, If…, Alan Price, Greta Gerwig, Whiplash, the aspect ratio set wrong, If…, movies should be more like American short stories, Patton Oswalt, Holy Mountain, it’s a wonder my wife hasn’t murdered me, Brooklyn, trash on the streets, majestic feel… picaresque quality, trying to interpret a dream, the word spiffy…, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, after we won the grand prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Robert McKee, it’s creating this unnatural look, Jerry Maguire kicked you right out, so personal and so dense, Putney Swope, Ghost World, fictional brothers, a city of zero waste people, Voltaire's Candide… Heaven is my Destination by Thornton Wilder and Kafka's Amerika, I Heart Huckabees, I feel like he ruined a whole generation of screenwriters, it’s a spectrum of guys, it’s sort of that first short story everybody writes, the It Follows toothpaste, Willem Dafoe, people used to say my name with three syllables, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, taking on different aspects of things he’s shoved into, Peter Greenaway, just a voyeur, The President's Analyst, a blunt-faced British guy… with wry expressions, Terry Gilliam, stylistic for the sake of it, Philip Stone, the role of you, Mike Birbiglia did that one time at a La Quinta hotel, he was teaching ballroom dance to dwarf inner city kids, you’re not lost in the dream of it, Monty Python films, this weird hierarchy of society based on the color hat you wear… and cheese tasting, it’s almost like too much my kind of thing… for me, he’s like the human sloth, Ramsay Bolton, a passive observer, a half-human half-pig… dinosaur, the old American hobo symbol for crazy kids, encoded meaning, our day-to-day lives are just filled with absurdity, Warren Clarke, I had lots of strange things going through my mind, seeing a different perception, Don’t Look Back, it’s a document of the process of making a movie, Ken Russell, what a weird world, you can have tea but you’ve gotta pay me for the biscuits, the gold shiny suit and post-apocalyptic world, after my break-up with the movies, getting performances out of non-actors, his voice always reminds me of wearing a shirt that’s just slightly too small, Never Apologize, a totem for you to react through, are pigs just fleshy dinosaurs, we are very fortunate, detritus, Brechtian artifice and alternate egos. Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for the 1973 film O Lucky Man!, so watch it before you listen. “…that scene, that and a couple of others, you just stop and you’re like - ‘What the hell am I watching? Like this is… so bizarre.' "

Buckle Up!Sara’s Website: http://sarahuntley.weebly.com/Sara on FB: https://www.facebook.com/huntley.saraA conversation on New Media & The Future of Storytelling, the Ethics of Digital Entities, and Treating Bots With Kindness. >>> Topics:What will the future BE like? Not just what will it LOOK like. With books, the story is revised with every printing, but oral traditions allow for the story to evolve with every telling. Virtual reality is opera – in that it contains all forms that came before it – but it’s opera tied into attention-tracking systems that can re-weave worlds and narratives in real-time as you interact with it.We’re going to be able to get inside our data, to LARP the user-generated, annotated maps of the terrains that we inhabit, and with AR turn our modern notions of a shared experience completely inside out. The ethics of keeping digital entities as pets. Michael:“While you can make the ethical argument that there is no harm to the bot, you might have to come up with an excellent rebuttal to the argument that it does still harm the human user of this game…”Sara’s conversation with “Phil,” the robotic version of author Philip K. Dick, designed by Hanson Robotics, at South By Southwest 2016.Grounding in the offline world while learning through interactive high technology how we are all connected, and then bringing back that awe to analog existence and the nature that preceded us.The manufacture of nostalgia as another artificial environment in an age of human-directed ecology…the replacement of our parents’ childhood with videogame franchises and, “What happens in a field at dusk?”The Lithosphere, Biosphere, and Noosphere…The racist Tay bot and how we need to be more mindful about how we socialize our digital offspring. What happens when we can’t tell the difference anymore between the minds we make online and those we make with our own bodies? Will we create and destroy sentient entities as casually as we create and destroy ordinary data files? >>> Sara Quotes:“There are no new ideas, but there are, there are new perspectives through these handed-down ideas. So it’s like, even though we take an idea that had been an oral tradition, then we bring it to the press, then we bring it to the screen, whether it’s a streamed series or something like that, and then it becomes a 3D thing – it’s always going to be the artisan’s ability to empathically tell what lands and what doesn’t. That’s what makes a great performance.”“As cool as AI art will be, I think we’ll always have a premium on what’s going to land with our imagination.”“I’ve come to think of it like, ‘What’s the thing I ultimately do? I rearrange matter. And how do I do it? I do it harmonically…as an artist.’”“I’ve been thinking about what the ramifications are of creating machines in the shape of gendered beings…and what that means in terms of coming to grip with the hierarchical strata that’s already a part of society. Because machines are always going to be mirrors of our desire of them…and granted, we want to convince ourselves, sometimes, as biological or spiritual beings that somehow parts of our experience transcend being programmed on a genetic level…but they’re all very grounded in human-ness.”“I think it’s really important right now, how we train the mind of the other, this emerging reflection. Like that one Microsoft young-lady bot – the Tay bot, that poor thing – how it got terribly socialized. Within 24 hours I felt bad for it. I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, this is a really bad report card on our ability to socialize a thing in a big pool.’ And it shows you exactly why kids don’t show their children terrible media when their minds are forming…”“Empowerment comes down to your awareness of the upgrade that you want.”“Is it gonna be just a battle of smart goos?”“I feel like no matter how advanced our toys become, the degree by which we will be able to have a sustainable system and be able to progress is going to be directly related to how harmonic the technologies we invest in are. Because you can have a bunch of ideas, but it really comes down to having a culture that has the wisdom to know which ideas are important to leave by the wayside.” >>> Media Mentions:• Blade Runner • The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect • “The Return of the Black Madonna” by Matthew Fox • Charles Stross - Accelerando • William Irwin Thompson – The American Replacement of Nature • Nicholas Caar - The Glass Cage: Automation and Us • Train to Busan • I Heart Huckabees • Prometheus • Transcendence • The Matrix Revolutions • 2001: A Space Odyssey • Samurai Jack • The Fifth Element • John Dies at The End • Event Horizon >>> Tags:Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Neuromarketing, Cognitive Liberty, World-Building, Media Theory, Augmented Reality, Robotics, Animism, Philip K.
