Go Dig a Hole

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 13, 2020 51:24

This episode was originally aired sometime in 2015 on The Archaeology Podcast Network. It has been edited for content and sound as a rebroadcast without their branding or advertisements. I’ve said this before as I’ve re-edited some of the other archive episodes, but it’s an interesting experience to go back in time for the Go Dig a Hole podcast and take stock of how much I’ve grown as an archaeologist, and as a podcaster in the past several years. When I was in undergrad, and even in grad school, I didn’t have many opportunities to learn about Native American tribal consultation. Similarly, I didn’t encounter tribal consultation as part of cultural resource management until I moved from Kentucky to Oregon, where coordination with Native American tribes is much more common, and also my roles as an archaeologist have changed to where it’s been essential for me to learn about and build relationships with tribes in the area. So, the last few years have been a learning process for me to say the least. When I first had this conversation with Jessica Yaquinto of Living Heritage Anthropology, who also co-hosts the Heritage Voices podcast, I was really new to the whole thing. I still have a lot to learn, but this podcast episode marks somewhat of a starting point for me in learning about tribal consultation. For more about this super important aspect of anthropological archaeology, I recommend checking out the entire catalog of episodes at the Heritage Voices podcast. There are a lot of important indigenous perspectives shared there, and they’re chock full of knowledge. Jessica Yaquinto joins host, Christopher Sims, in this episode to chat about working with tribes. Her work through her company, Living Heritage, and affiliation with other organizations lets her use the full range of skills available to anthropological archaeology. She guides listeners through key concepts in working with Native American communities from the very beginning, and explores what it would take to build a more inclusive archaeology - one that includes Native voices. Presented by The Vatican II Series on November 13, 2013 The liturgical reform initiated by the Second Vatican Council is the most far reaching in Catholic history. It is also the most visible sign and fruit of what the Council intended. What happened at Vatican II to generate this reform? What changed and why? Now, fifty years later, is Vatican II "old news" or does it still give direction and hope to the Church today? Rita Ferrone received her MDiv from Yale in 1983. Since that time she has worked for the Catholic Church in parishes, diocesan offices, and as an independent scholar, writer, and consultant. She is the author of several books about liturgy, including: "Liturgy: Sacrosanctum Concilium", in the Paulist series, and "Rediscovering Vatican II", for which she won a Catholic Press Association award. She is a regular contributor to Commonweal and other Catholic journals.

The Mijikenda include nine Bantu-speaking ethnic groups in the Kaya forests of coastal Kenya. The identity of the Mijikenda is expressed through oral traditions and performing arts related to the sacred forests, which are also sources of valuable medicinal plants. These traditions and practices constitute their codes of ethics and governance systems, and include prayers, oath-taking, burial rites and charms, naming of the newly born, initiations, reconciliation, marriages and coronations. Kayas are fortified settlements whose cultural spaces are indispensable for the enactment of living traditions that underscore the identity, continuity and cohesion of the Mijikenda communities. The use of natural resources within the Kayas is regulated by traditional knowledge and practices that have contributed to the conservation of their biodiversity. The Kambi (Councils of Elders) acts as the custodians of these Kayas and the related cultural expressions. Today, Mijikenda communities are gradually abandoning the Kayas in favour of informal urban settlements. Due to pressure on land resources, urbanization and social transformations, the traditions and cultural practices associated to the Kaya settlements are fast diminishing, posing great danger to the social fabric and cohesiveness of the Mijikenda communities who venerate and celebrate them as their identity and symbol of continuity.
