Jesper Olsen, an exotic signing from Ajax in 1984 for the Reds, joins Helen Evans, Wes Brown and Lou Macari for a trip down Memory Lane on the UTD Podcast. The Dane was at Old Trafford with kids from his Future Football coaching school and, as he is based in Australia now, this was a rare opportunity to speak to the former winger at a ground he graced, parading his skills down the left flank.Jesper reveals how he always followed United's results growing up in Denmark and worked in a bank before breaking through at Ajax. He feels there was a reason why Ron Atkinson decided to sign him and talks us through the move and adapting to life in English football. This included a lot of effort off the pitch, including lock-ins at Paddy Crerand's pub (!) and needing to ask captain Bryan Robson about the ‘small bears' that were appearing in his garden! It was not always plain sailing, as he lifts the lid on an infamous training-ground bust-up with midfield hard-man Remi Moses, one that was hard to hide as it left him with a black eye.The transition to training at The Cliff was an eye-opener and he got to see the start of Sir Alex Ferguson's reign when the Scot came in. Jesper would go on to play with Eric Cantona at Bordeaux and talks about the best players he lined up with, including Johan Cruyff and that memorable penalty routine he performed with the Dutch master. Now living Down Under, Jesper retains the memories of United being “something special” and reminisces about the brilliant FA Cup in 1985 against Everton. At the end of the podcast, Jesper, Wes and Lou provide invaluable advice to the kids from the coaching school about how to make the grade in the game. This is a fabulous chat with one of our first overseas signings and the chance to catch up with a skilful player who will be remembered fondly by a lot of supporters. The best place to catch up on the back-catalogue of our interviews is over on the Manchester United App, where you can listen to - and watch - all of our episodes in full, for free. Kicking out gambling addiction: an interview with Tony Kelly

In this Podcast Hannah Dyson talks to Tony Kelly about what drives him to educate young people and adults on the dangers of gambling and how he turned his life around to lead the battle against gambling addiction. In this webinar we will discuss Tony's personal journey including recovery tools and will explore Tony's current work with Red Card and why it is important to educate young people and adults on the dangers of gambling. After growing up with his sister and five brothers, including his twin Mel in Coventry, Tony Kelly became the youngest ever player in the Bristol City first team at the age of 16 before being snapped up as a pro by Stoke City where he spent 3 years under managers Alan Ball and Lou Macari. Tony played in the Swedish second Division as well as the second, third and further Divisions of the English Football League in a 9 year career. Tony's career saw highs of scoring a last-minute goal against Liverpool at Anfield in the 1991 League Cup to the lows of suffering from racial abuse and pervading this much longed for football career was a gambling addiction. Despite hanging up his boots in 1999, at the age of 35, his gambling demons were still a part of his life as nothing had prepared him for how to deal with his addiction. Tony's gambling addiction led to him to lose over £500,000, his house and partnerr. Tony was able to overcome this and now works with young people to educate them on gambling and the dangers of this getting out of control in anyone's life. Tony teamed up with the Professional Footballers' Association to write a book called "Red Card" with the aim of ensuring that everything is done to give all footballers the knowledge of what can be done. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/globalnet21/message

Liverpool had already won the league and they'd go onto win the European Cup too, beating Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1 in Rome.Manchester United won. All three goals came in a crazy five-minute period early in the second half after a non-event first half. Stuart Pearson opened the scoring when he latched onto a long ball forward. Liverpool equalised through Jimmy Case soon after, but three minutes later United regained the lead when Lou Macari's shot deflected off team-mate Jimmy Greenhoff's chest. Jimmy's brother, Brian, was reportedly given the wrong medal after the match. So too was Arthur Albiston. We also discuss the latest on RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.Check out the latest of Mike's Icons of Old Trafford: Martin Buchan - available on our blog - http://strettynews.comSubscribe on Patreon: http://patreon.com/strettynewsTwitter: @Strettycast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I spent 3 years at Stoke City under legendary managers such as Alan Ball and Lou Macari and had numerous highs and lows during that period, namely a Wembley winners medal and my famous ‘YouTube’ goal at Anfield in a 2-2 draw in the 1991 League Cup! If I knew then what I know now, with regards to how professional therapy can be a ‘lifesaver’, I would not be writing this article. ‘Problem gambling’ can be helped with proper treatment, which may include psychological therapy. There is no magical cure as it’s an illness and should be treated as such. Rob Meets Lou Macari

In this week’s show, Rob talks to legendary player and manager, Lou Macari. Lou’s extensive career has taken him through stints at Celtic, where he was part of the now mythical Quality Street Gang, which included the likes of Kenny Dalglish and Danny McGrain. He went on to play over 400 games for Manchester United, helping them win promotion back to the First Division, as well as the FA Cup in 1977. From there, Macari went on to an illustrious managerial career, before founding The Macari Centre, a street retreat used to house the homeless sleeping rough in Stoke-On-Trent. Lou joins Rob to talk about his inspirational life, his experiences, and his outlook on the game itself, both past and present, as well as his life now. KEY TAKEAWAYS Lou puts his success down to the talent of the managers he’s worked with. Strong leadership and the correct advice at the correct time helped Lou to find his identity as a player, and to achieve his best at all times. The managers of Macari’s youth stood for no nonsense. Discipline levels were high. This led to an intense desire to please their boss, and to not run afoul of him. Lou identifies physical fitness as the main priority for any player. Stamina and physical prowess allow every player to achieve their best. Part of the art of management is to convince your players that there is nothing to fear. Each game is winnable. If we believe that we can win, and play to our strengths, there is no team you can’t beat. When you are at the start, and sometimes during your playing career, you never really get to take a step back and appreciate what you are achieving. Lou found that it was only when hi splaying career came to an end that he was truly able to gain perspective on his own achievements. When deciding how he was to begin his managing career, Lou opted to emulate the best of the managers he had worked for, which meant his management career was a defined by discipline, fitness and respect. Post-retirement, Lous devoted himself to The Macari Centre, a place to care for the homeless of Stoke. The level of homelessness shocked Lou when he found out about it, especially the reasons for it. The breakdown of relationships is surprisingly a huge factor in the amount of homeless in Stoke. Lou has devoted himself to making a safe environment for society’s outcasts using the same lessons of discipline and respect he employed through his football career.   BEST MOMENTS ‘You do learn from the great managers. You can’t help but do that’ ‘Though we worked hard in our youth, we were in heaven’ ‘I always believed that if you could control a tennis ball, then you could definitely control a football’ ‘If you’ve not got fitness, you can’t play’ ‘Run around, work hard, and it’ll happen for you’ ‘Following people who’ve risen to the top is the right thing to do’ ‘Where you’ve been and done okay, and succeeded, those are your best places’ ‘If you really want to do it, then stick with it’ ‘If those obstacles hadn’t been put in front of me, I wouldn’t be here today’ ‘I don’t like nasty people. I prefer nice people’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast   ABOUT THE HOST   Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. As a prelude to the upcoming interview of Rob with the football legend Lou Macari. Rob shares in this episode of the Leader Manager Coach Podcast how it went down when he talked to Lou about his playing career, some personal stories, and the current situation of the football sport. We live in a fast-paced hyperconnected world, the number of people who are interested in football and all other sports is declining. Learn what Lou has to say about this today. Rob was also lucky to have been toured by Lou in The Macari Centre, a shelter for the homeless opened by Lou himself. Discover why Rob absolutely admires Lou’s down-to-earthiness and devotion for helping other people after witnessing him very involved in the centre. Start listening in to know more about this ‘one for the books’ experience of Rob with Lou Macari! KEY TAKEAWAYS Maybe only a few know about Lou Macari’s shelter for the homeless, The Macari Centre. This advocacy of his didn’t stop when he finished building the centre. He continued serving the homeless every single day, and Rob got to witness it that day. No ball games! This sums up the current state of the football sport. Kids already stopped playing street football on the streets, and there’s a fewer number of people out there who watch the games. There’s a lot of talks that there is still racism and sexism in the world of football. It’s time to support awareness campaigns to remove this kind of discrimination. Rob collaborated with two other people, and together they created the Our Game, a mobile app that serves as a social platform where football enthusiasts, players, and supporters can converse safely and freely. BEST MOMENTS                                                                                                                               “Whatever you do, whatever your role in life, whatever your niche in life, and particularly, if you are a football coach or a manager and you have any notion of finding a seam of gold or nuggets of pure diamonds to take on board and use, listen to Lou’s podcast interview.” “This guy understands life. He understands what people go through.” “Lou, I can’t thank you enough for a, your time and b, the experience you gave me yesterday.” VALUABLE RESOURCES                  The Macari Centre Our Game App ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA qualified coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background.
