Louise Phipps Senft is a force of nature! She has excelled at the highest levels as an attorney, an author, a professor, fellow podcaster, and following her son Archer's 2015 spinal cord injury, an amazing advocate for individuals with SCI and their families. After having spent many months in ICUs and around her son's hospital bed, Louise realized that most hospitals in the US do not have Spinal Cord Injury expertise, most families do not have mediation skills which are essential for navigating complicated health care, and most doctors are not trauma informed. So, as she has done her whole life, Louise rose to the occasion! She founded the 501(c)(3) non-profit, the Integrative Center for Trauma Healing, Advocacy, and Transformation, IC THAT, d/b/a Blink of an Eye™, in 2021 to fill the gap for more relational and trauma informed responses for SCI families in crisis bringing them cutting edge SCI medical expertise as well as hope, emotional and spiritual support, and navigation how to's. Blink of an Eye™ is training medical teams from the inside out through the families served. Blink of an Eye™ public charity exists for those who know how life can change in the blink of an eye. Their mission is to transform the spinal cord injury experience for families and medical teams into an Extraordinary Experience, despite the devastation, in the first days and months of injury. Louise and I had a wide-ranging and candid conversation last week. I believe this episode will make you think long and hard about your life, and that of your loved ones and friends, because as we all know, it can change in the blink of an eye!
Today, our guest is Louise Phipps Senft. Louise is the mother to a son with an SCI, and founder of Blink of an Eye, a nonprofit organization that is committed to addressing that initial moment when everything changes after a spinal cord injury. A big theme of this conversation is trauma. And one of the things that arises in our dialogue with Louise is how this emotional trauma kind of goes under or undiagnosed – both with the injured person AND with the family and the extended community. Louise is an extraordinary person who will tell us a bit about the story of her family and how they've responded in the aftermath of her son's SCI. We'll also talk about her son and where he is now. Season 3: Dear Louise Installment 3: How do you build your SCI community after injury? with Kelly Sydnor Even as COVID protocols have relaxed in hospital settings and family members have more access to being bedside with their SCI loved ones, there is still a tremendous gap across the US in the knowledge and expertise needed to respond to a SCI patient nationwide. The first critical decision made for a spinal cord injury is where to transport the injured person. Most 911 call centers are not familiar with the location of the 14 SCI model centers and SCI trauma centers. The decisions for transitioning to an appropriate rehab facility can be equally frought with uninformed decision making. Our guest today has been there as a mom of a son injured in 2011. She calls herself the Trauma Mamma as she is one of the SCI moms who reaches out to new SCI families in their time if overwhelm, families often struggling to understand SCI and caught in the medical system often working with medical teams who have little SCI expertise. Listen in as Kelly and Louise reflect on what they had to learn in the critical first weeks and months of injury and how this might help you or a friend navigate their way in the first months of SCI of a loved one. Join us in building this SCI community as we connect and create a network of practical tips and support for SCI families and friends and medical staff working to provide the best care of their loved one to survive the first year of injury. The creation of the Blink of an Eye non profit resource library is underway now. It will be a repository for the wisdom of SCI families, SCI information needed in the first year of injury, guidance, inspiration, and statistics that can empower families to guide the course of the SCI patient's healing and advocate for their well being and their family's well being. Make sure to follow @BlinkofaneyeNonprofit on facebook and instagram for updates on the resource library. S3 Trauma Healing Learning 25: Wholehearted Patient Care with Trauma Nurse Rebecca McWalters Think about all the connotations of the word “care.” In a clinical context, it can refer to providers who give patients sustenance and medical attention for their survival and well being. Now, pair that definition with the more colloquial meaning of “care” – heartfelt devotion and love – and you have a truly incredible combination where a caregiver's work is responsive to the patient as a whole human. There are so many emotional and medical factors at play for both patients and families in SCI rehab. Wholehearted care can make all the difference in trauma healing. Join Louise and Trauma Nurse Rebecca McWalters as we hear why nurses should slow down and how Mom's know best and what it takes to cultivate that combination of care as we get a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the workings of an SCI care team at a premiere rehabilitation facility. Here we go. In this episode: Rebecca McWalters is the Director of Nursing with Baron Home Group in Atlanta, Georgia. She previously was a nurse at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta and was one of the people who made a lasting impact on Archer's care in the fall of 2015. S3 Ep25: Listen to the Patient Self-Advocacy and the Caring Ethic in SCI Rehab Even though a Spinal Cord Injured person's brain does not receive signals from lower parts of the body, that doesn't mean their body doesn't experience pleasure, pain or discomfort. And in late October, 2015, Archer knew. He knew his body well enough to speak up just in time about an internal sensation he thought he experienced. Thankfully someone was listening. Join us for a surprising turn in our journey, as we narrowly dodge a particularly ghoulish Halloween event but end up confronting something even more shocking. This could be the reminder you need to remember to listen – to your own needs, or to someone near you who needs to be heard right now, and how to paint the picture of the patient so the medical team can see who they really are. Here we go. In this episode: Rebecca McWalters was one of Archer's most dedicated and responsive nurses at the Shepherd Center. After working there for 14 years, she is now Director of Nursing with Baron Home Group in Georgia, serving SCI patients in their homes. S3 Ep23: Lessons from Past Trauma Going Back to Go Forward Time is not linear. At least, not the felt sense of time. And when a crisis shocks the system, complex things can happen to the perception of time. Shock has the potential to bring us over the “window of tolerance” as described by Dan Siegel, and into the realm of trauma. When this happens, we need to later go back with resources and spaciousness to move through those experiences. In this episode, we take you on an experiential journey through embodied time in the wake of a trauma. You can expect the entertainment and nourishment of a powerful, true story, as well as some practical breathwork and somatic tools to gently move through your own difficult memories. Here we go. In this episode: Dr. Kris Radcliff, from Atlanticare ICU, who graciously and mindfully consulted with our family during the first hours following Archer's accident. Davis Barsby, a lifelong family friend who was with Archer when Archer had his accident. That summer, Davis was working as both head lifeguard and assistant manager at the Cape May Beach Club. Jessica Dibb, the Founder, Spiritual Director, and Principal Teacher of Inspiration Consciousness School, co-Director of the Global Professional Breathwork Alliance and Trustee for the Blink of an Eye 501(c)(3), was whom Louise called upon for intuition and breath-work insight about Archer's lung capacity. S3 Ep22: The Doctor is not the only Authority Timing the Rehab Hospital Discharge for SCI patients The lifelong effects of SCI highlight how fragile life is and how deeply interdependent we are. And, in the case of the person living with a SCI, getting basic needs met necessitates relying on others, and interdependence takes on a whole new dimension. The transition home from the hospital or rehab facility cannot be rushed. SCI survival depends on having a suitable home and trained care team. The hospital team may not realize what it takes for families to put this together and families may need to negotiate for more time. Families can look inward to another authority guiding them through this life change and timing decisions– and that is getting in touch with the inner authority. This affects how you know when the time is right, how you know when you have the right care team, how you communicate your goals to medical practitioners, and also how you can access hope. Take a moment, drop into your inner-knowing and join us to learn what it meant for Louise and how that might inspire your own decision making and healing process. Here we go. In this episode: Price Campbell, one of Archer's dear high school friends from McDonogh School in Baltimore who was one of the friends to come visit Archer at Shepherd. Hear about Price's visit when she was just 16 years old, her fears, and what sparked some much-needed ease and a moment of lightness and restoration everyone involved. Season 3: Trauma Healing Learning 21: Design Tips for an SCI Accessible Home with Kathy Kirchner A home is a place where we grow, where we rest, where we spend a significant amount of our time. In Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the most basic physiological necessities like shelter, rest, and water are all part of what a home provides – but also some of the more psychological needs like belonging and esteem. What happens when illness or disability change the way we fulfill those needs? What if our home no longer serves us in basic or complex ways? The process of changing a home in the wake of a catastrophic event like an SCI is highly layered, and requires team members versed in both home construction and therapeutic knowledge related to disability. Kathy Kirchner is someone who holds that knowledge, and in this episode we get some crucial advice from her on how to approach a home renovation for SCI or other disability, illness, or injury. Whether or not that is your current concern, join us to gain perspective on what it really means for a home to be accessible to all who live there. Kathy Kirchner is the owner of Accessible Home Solutions, a consulting company that helps individuals and families through the process of reworking their homes to be more accessible. Kathy's clients include people transitioning from hospitals or care facilities and returning home with a new disability, couples who want to age-in-place and account for long-term health considerations, and adult children who want to ensure their parents live in a safe home environment. She also works with the Center for Innovative Care in Aging at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, the D.C. Office on Aging's Safe at Home program, and Habitat for Humanity of Metro Maryland's CAPABLE (Community Aging in Place Advancing Better Living for Elders) program. If you are seeking a designer who can help with an accessible home modification project, you can find a national list of individuals certified by the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology Home Modification Program at this link. Season 3: Episode 19: Boot Camp Rehab When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Feeling the tension building at Shepherd for whether Archer or Archer's body was capable enough to be in the rehab program, the race was on to get Archer off a ventilator. And the stakes were high. Come with us as we uncover wisdom about how to source energy, courage, and love, and in harrowing moments when the body is not working and when giving up threatens to set in. Season 3: Trauma Healing Learning 17: When Grief Gets Trapped in the Body with Dana Robinson, L. Ac. Autumn is the season of grief. Grief also inhabits particular organs in the body. Healing invites us to move with and through our emotions and trust in their necessary processes, lest they become stuck within the body system. Learn with us as we explore some of the stunning millennia-old teachings of Traditional Chinese Medicine, as articulated by licensed acupuncturist Dana Robinson with Mend Acupuncture in Baltimore, Maryland. You will receive an illuminating teaching of how we can be in tune with the seasons of the calendar year, by paying attention to our emotions and which organs in the body correspond to which emotions and seasons, and how we can be in tune with the natural movement of the seasons and remove blockages in the body, particularly when certain emotions have not been fully processed, as many emotions are not in our fast paced world. Self-advocacy looks different for everyone. That's what Louise Phipps Senft realized when her husband Billy asked for time alone with Archer at the hospital, and what she has continually been reminded of throughout her marriage. Some people need space and time as a result of trauma, and some people need immediate, warm connection. In Season 2: Episode 7: Don't Settle For Less, Louise recounts her advocacy for a meeting with 3 of Archer's doctors and Billy's advocacy for his own needs, like time with his son and a solid plan to pick Dutch, their other son, up from camp. She also reflects on how past childhood trauma and generational trauma impacts a marriage, and she shares with us an approach she calls the The Positive Frame based in neuroscience findings that helped her navigate to help others see what was possible. In this episode, you will hear excerpts of interview conversations with: Steve Lepler, director of West End House camp, where Dutch Senft, Louise's youngest son, was spending the summer when Archer was injured. Steve and Louise speak about their decision to tell Dutch what happened and how his summer went while at camp. Join Louise for Season 2 of Blink of an Eye: Episode 7: Don't Settle for Less, August 18. Day 14. Listen in afterwards to this week's companion Trauma Healing Learnings episode for new understandings on trauma and tools to navigate your own trauma healing: Trauma Healing Learning: Episode 7: Don't Settle for Less. Welcome to Season 2. Trauma is not just an event, although the trauma experience begins with one event. In order to move forward in trauma-healing, you often have to look back. That's what Louise Phipps Senft is doing in this first episode of Blink of an Eye's Season 2. Join Louise as she recaps the first 9 days in the ICU following her son Archer's diving accident in Cape May, New Jersey. It begins with The Call and ends in the aftermath of Archer's cardiac arrest. The story doesn't just stop there, though: Season 2 will continue to follow Louise and her family as they cope with this life changing event and interact with medical staff. Welcome to Blink of an Eye. I'm Louise Phipps Senft, your host. Together, we will explore life stories of trauma, loss, awakenings, and epiphanies, beginning with my own story when I got the Call that one of my 5 children, Archer, then a 6’2” teenager, was in a catastrophic diving accident at the beach, shattering his neck, rendering him paralyzed from the neck down. You will hear my written in real-time journal entries sent to my family that were later posted on social media and read daily by over 50,000 people who joined me and us in the fight to save Archer’s life. In Blink of an Eye, I will introduce you to some of the extraordinary people behind the scenes through guest interviews woven throughout the journal entry recordings. And you will meet others with extraordinary life stories, as well as wise men and women with life-changing knowledge for healing that you and I can learn from, consider, and grow into, especially if you happen to face a crisis, a trauma, or a deep loss. Together, we will explore the true nature of our relationships and interconnectedness and how to advocate for what is possible even in the face of traumatic events that change everything.

Families today are assuming responsibility for the informal care of over 75 percent of elderly family members and are often faced with difficult decisions from a bewildering array of choices:? e.g. estate planning, financial issues, and guardianship.? In the best of circumstances, this can be a stressful process and sometimes leads to disagreements, confusion, and conflict at a time when the best intentions of the family are to work together for the needs of a loved and respected aging family member. With the help of a trained professional mediator, family members share information and perspectives, explore and evaluate options, and develop workable solutions through a process that promotes open and positive communication.? The mediator is a neutral, who does not offer advice and believes that each family is unique and knows best what solutions will work for their family as a whole.? For families in conflict or simply wanting help through a transition elder care mediation offers a process which can reduce stress and prevent a crisis. Louise Phipps Senft, an attorney, is the founder of the Baltimore Mediation/Louise Phipps Senft and Associates, the first trans-formative mediation firm in Maryland. She designed and continues to teach what was the first certificated mediation training course offered by the law school. Louise and William's new book, Being Relational, details seven ways of being in relation to others that capture the heart and soul of all that is self-help, grounded in method, and supported by relational conflict theory and brain science findings. The ways of being that promote quality face-to-face dialogue and lasting positive change are rooted in teachings from many sources and are also inspired by the experience of thousands of people for whom the Senfts have mediated, fostering personal strength and connectedness through quality interaction. In this program, Louise and William will share insights into their practical and inspiring approach that the listeners can immediately apply to their stressful interactions as well as, check in on and grow into, as a way of being in relation to others. Louise Phipps Senft and William Senft (Baltimore, MD) are business and law professors, mediators, lawyers, entrepreneurs, parents of five children, and in William's case, youth sports coach and clergy. They are the founders of the nonprofit ORANS: The Campaign for Relational Leadership and the ORANS Institute for Relational Leadership. Stephen Kotev is a Washington D.C. based conflict resolution consultant offering mediation, negotiation and facilitation services, conflict coaching, training and somatic education to private and government clients. In our show "Come As You Are" - The Mediation Experience I will be speaking with Louise Phipps Senft about the mediation experience. Louise was voted as Baltimore's Best Mediator and named as Maryland's Top 100 Women. If you are considering engaging in mediation then learn what a mediator is actually doing and how their own worldview impacts how they work with disputants. This is important to understand especially when you are looking to work with a mediator. We will also explore what you, the mediation participant, are doing in the mediation. Hear mediation stories that have inspired and transformed the conflict dynamics. Returning to the show is Louise Phipps Senft from Louise Phipps Senft and Associates, and founder of the Baltimore Mediation Center, the first mediation firm in Maryland with a focus on relational approaches to conflict resolution. Louise is an amazing woman and I am honored to know her. She has been voted, awarded and honored with numerous recognitions for her incredible work. For example, in May 2010, Louise was inducted into the Greater Baltimore Area's Young Women's Christian Association's Academy of Leaders with a Special Leader of the Year award for her work in the field of conflict resolution with effects that empowered women and eradicated racism. Her work with family businesses is featured in the documentary, Resolutionary People (2002), produced by Emmy award winner Richard Chisolm; and Louise's work in elder care mediation was the featured story on ABC World News with Charles Gibson. Finally, you can see her articles in the monthly column for The Daily Record, The Negotiating Table: Turning Problems into Opportunities.
