People come to Baltimore and fall in love with it and dedicate their lives to making it better,  Rev. Al and I couldn't be more excited to welcome Farmer Chippy a man who John Brothers couldn't stop talking about, so we had to bring him on and we quickly came to the conclusion he's a bigtime diamond in the rough. Farmer Chippy, he's a farmer, he's community organizer, the father of two children and a difference maker in a Community that has been challenged for a too long.  He started coming to Baltimore as a child to visit his grandfather from his home in Trinidad Tabago, he fell in love with the place and laid down his roots coinciding the birth of his first son... If he's not working with kids that don't trust many other than him, he is buildng a reputation as someone that gets things done.  The largest Urban Farm in one of the state's most challenged neighborhood.  Bringing trust, growing a little food and providing "food for the mind" he's created a large following and he's leading his fellow citizens to the light.  Community organizing is his strength and he recently pulled together the Carribean Community, which is prevelant and proud in Park Heights for a celebration of "Carnival" in Druid Hill Park, one of our favorite places.  We got an hour with him, it's a great talk and we quickly realized that this guy is Holy, his work is Holy, and we are lucky to have him as a full fledged advocate for our City...This is what Baltimore does to  people...Rev and I feel the same way as you do Farmer Chippy, Baltimore, "The Greatest City in America" Thanks for joining us and all you are doing for Baltimore. Brief summary of episode:Tiffany Holmes serves as the chief academic officer, responsible for all aspects of the development and delivery of educational programs, including curricula, faculty, facilities and budget, and ensuring and supporting the achievement and fulfillment of academic excellence across all disciplines of the College. Tiffany is on The Truth In This Art to tell us about The Art Of Racing.About the Art of RacingThe Art of Racing is part of the ongoing partnership between 1/ST and the Park Heights Renaissance that included honoring the late community advocate George E. Mitchell through the George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes and the George E. Mitchell Park Heights Community Fellowship Grant. The Art of Racing builds upon the legacy of these initiatives by recognizing and honoring individuals who, much like Mitchell himself, demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to the Park Heights community.“The visual elements behind the Preakness Stakes captivate the imagination both on race day and year-round,” said David Wilson, Chief Marketing Officer, 1/ST. “The Art of Racing commemorates and celebrates one of the most iconic sporting events in Maryland, and nationwide. It also represents the opportunity for a modern visual interpretation of the Preakness Stakes as we redefine the sport to connect with a new generation of fans.”“The Preakness is one of the most esteemed public events for Maryland and this inaugural competition celebrates its importance in a unique way,” said Dr. Leslie King-Hammond, the founding director of the Center for Race and Culture at MICA and a member of the judging panel for The Art of Racing. There is an illustrious history between MICA and the Preakness Stakes that began in the 1970s when then-MICA professor Raoul Middleman led his classes in painting murals of Pimlico Race Course. The seven murals Middleman created with his students, which live in perpetuity behind the course's grandstand, provide an intimate look at a tradition defined by history and character.“Raoul Middleman enriched the lives of his students by giving them the hands-on opportunity to experience commercial artmaking,” said Dr. Tiffany Holmes, MICA's Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. “The Art of Racing builds upon Professor Middleman's legacy by commissioning artists from MICA and across Maryland to provide their interpretations of Maryland's time-honored tradition of Thoroughbred racing.”The Truth In This ArtThe Truth In This Art is a podcast interview series supporting vibrancy and development of Baltimore & beyond's arts and culture.Mentioned in this episode:MICAArt of RacingTo find more amazing stories from the artist and entrepreneurial scenes in & around Baltimore, check out my episode directory.Stay in TouchNewsletter sign-upSupport my podcastShareable link to episode★ Support this podcast ★

Eve Rosen's The Voucher Promise: 'Section 8' and the Fate of an American Neighborhood (Princeton UP, 2020) examines the Housing Voucher Choice Program, colloquially known as "Section 8," and the effect of the program on low-income families living in Park Heights in Baltimore. In a new era of housing policy that hopes to solve poverty with opportunity in the form of jobs, social networks, education, and safety, the program offers the poor access to a new world: safe streets, good schools, and well-paying jobs through housing vouchers. The system should, in theory, give recipients access to housing in a wide range of neighborhoods, but in The Voucher Promise, Rosen examines how the housing policy, while showing great promise, faces critical limitations. Rosen spent over a year living in a Park Heights neighborhood, getting to know families, accompanying them on housing searches, spending time on front stoops, and learning about the history of the neighborhood and the homeowners who had settled there decades ago. She examines why, when low-income renters are given the opportunity to afford a home in a more resource-rich neighborhood, they do not relocate to one, observing where they instead end up and other opportunities housing vouchers may offer them. Richard E. Ocejo is associate professor of sociology at John Jay College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY). He is the author of Masters of Craft: Old Jobs in the New Urban Economy (Princeton University Press, 2017), about the transformation of low-status occupations into cool, cultural taste-making jobs (cocktail bartenders, craft distillers, upscale men’s barbers, and whole animal butchers), and of Upscaling Downtown: From Bowery Saloons to Cocktail Bars in New York City (Princeton University Press, 2014), about growth policies, nightlife, and conflict in gentrified neighborhoods.  Learn more about your ad choices. Brandon Scott is a “son of Baltimore.” Born and raised in Park Heights, Scott says he was drawn to run for public office in the city when he was a child and watched the world descend on his neighborhood for a horse race once a year, when every other day he and his friends and family struggled for basic needs, like heat or AC in their schools. “It changes you,” Scott said. And now, Scott, Baltimore's youngest mayor in more than a century, will helm a city in the midst of great change. Former Mayor Catherine Pugh left city hall in scandal a year-and-a-half ago. In the wake, the city council and Scott proposed a series of governmental reforms, all overwhelmingly approved by voters at the polls. Maryland Matters' Bennett Leckrone caught up with Scott about his win and plans for governing earlier this week. We also check in with Maryland Matters Editor Josh Kurtz about the news of the week, including other election outcomes, Maryland Republicans' attitudes on the presidential race, what the 2021 General Assembly session will look like, the loss of another top public health official in state government, and, on a lighter note on this Friday the 13th, a tally of the fate so-called unlucky bill numbers.

Reporter: Kina Pohjanen Producent: Lisa Helgesson Exekutiv producent: Eskil Larsson

Yessss indeed! This ya PODCAST is a celebration of our most recent collaboration with the great PARK HEIGHTS label from right here in BROOKLYN, NYC!!! Ya See wha me a say?!?!?!? Think back and reflect of the great years of NYC reggae...yesss...Let us now bow our heads and give a three fisted Brap Brap Brap gun salute to those golden years!!!!! There was a time in the 80s and 90s when New York City could stand head to head with Kingston as the hottest place for dancehall music....clubs like Q Club, Reggae Lounge, Love People, Biltmore Ballroom ran things at night while during the day Utica Avenue, Fulton and Church was like MUSIC CENTRAL with tons of record stores and labels booming up the big tunes for the people. New York had its own sound and its own artists, and one of the finest spots was the store called PARK HEIGHTS ran by Delroy Francis and his wife Flavia. The two of them ran one of the hottest stores and from early on began producing a slew of unique records both Roots, Digital and dancehall. Delroy had his finger on the pulse of the new digital language of the mid-eighties and combined that heavy production with some of the best underground singers and DJs who were then living in Brooklyn. Well we are proud to introduce our first set in what will be a long series of Reissues done in collaboration with Delroy Francis and his Park Heights label.
