The coming of age of Annie Shea is documented in two novels by Caitlin Hicks. Set in 1963 California, "A Theory of Expanded Love" finds a young Annie, desperate for attention in a family of 13 kids, a military father and a strong Catholic faith. With the passing of Pope John XXIII, a family friend stands to be the first American to be his successor. Annie seizes the moment to create a web of lies, but then discovers a family's hidden secret, which they will keep at all costs. Annie's life takes a turn in "Kennedy Girl." Now seventeen, Annie stands to further break the mores of her family, through her crush with a black fellow student, Lucas Jones and her volunteering for the campaign of Robert F. Kennedy. The world comes crashing down for both Annie and Lucas with Kennedy's assassination--later joined by Annie's brother, the three head for the Canadian border, where the latter's own secrets are uncovered, and Annie must sort out a changing world and what it all means for her. An author and actress, Caitlin Hicks drew on her own upbringing for Annie and the cast of characters in these two works. First released in 2015, "A Theory..." won awards from the likes of Forward Indies and iTunes for Best New Fiction. Her writing has appeared in newspapers such as the Vancouver Sun, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle and Milwaukee Journal Sentiel, plus Atlantic Canada's International literary journal, The Fiddlehead. She lives in British Columbia.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, October 28. Rain is on tap for Thursday. According to the National Weather Service there will be a high chance for showers for much of the day, with a high of 51 degrees. On Thursday night the low temperature, interestingly enough, will only drop to 47 degrees, a sign of a slightly warmer Friday that will also probably have less rain. Iowa's COVID-19 numbers have received their weekly update, and it was reported that 117 more Iowans died of COVID-19. All of these deaths occurred in September and October, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health. 100 deaths were reported the previous week. Statewide, the COVID-19 death toll now totals 6,965 since March 2020 when the virus first appeared in Iowa. New case numbers were roughly the same as the week before, with the under 17 age group again leading the way for most new cases. With COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 5 to 11 expected to gain federal approval by next week, state and local health officials are preparing to administer shots to thousands of young Iowans in the coming weeks. The Iowa Department of Public Health anticipates the approximately 284,000 Iowans in that age group can start receiving shots by the first week in November, pending an emergency use authorization. Vaccine experts are meeting over the next week to offer final recommendations on the two-dose coronavirus vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech. In anticipation of a surge in demand for the shots, federal officials have already purchased enough pediatric doses for the estimated 28 million Americans who will become eligible. A judge has upheld the firing of former Cedar Rapids police Sgt. Lucas Jones, saying the termination was supported by evidence of dishonesty and violation of departmental policies. Sixth Judicial District Judge Christopher Bruns, in an Oct. 5 ruling, said Police Chief Wayne Jerman's finding — that Jones was dishonest about an Oct. 30, 2016, traffic stop and that he had violated two departmental policies — is supported by substantial evidence and Iowa law. The firing was later affirmed by the city's Civil Service Commission after Jones appealed his termination. The reason given for firing Jones was that he had been dishonest when confronted about having his microphone turned off during a traffic stop. According to the Cedar Rapids Police, a pattern of Jones turning off his microphone while in the field was discovered during an internal investigation into the shooting of a Black motorist named Jerime Mitchell. Jones shot Mitchell during a Nov. 1, 2016, traffic stop near Coe College after stopping Mitchell for having a light out on his pickup truck's license plate. Mitchell was paralyzed in the incident and successfully sued the city for damages. After much speculation of how the pandemic would affect Iowa's high-profile university athletic programs — with deficit projections phttps://www.thegazette.com/iowa-hawkeyes/with-loss-of-tv-revenue-looming-iowa-discontinues-4-sports/ (rompting the University of Iowa to cut sports )programs — final numbers for the fiscal 2021 budget reveal losses were steep but less than first feared. Instead of the expected $60 to $75 million shortfall UI Athletics Director Gary Barta last August cited in eliminating men's and women's swimming and diving, men's gymnastics and men's tennis, UI Athletics ended the budget year June 30 with a $42.9 million deficit, according to a new Board of Regents report. That is on the low end of Barta's revised deficit prediction from last October Barta has previously said that https://www.thegazette.com/iowa-hawkeyes/gary-barta-restoration-of-4-dropped-sports-at-iowa-isnt-possible/ (even a reduced deficit wouldn't be enough to save) the https://www.thegazette.com/iowa-hawkeyes/save-iowa-sports-group-struggles-to-be-heard-at-university-of-iowa/ (men's sports) cut by the department. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, October 6. There will be a chance for rain Wednesday that will only increase in likelihood as Wednesday approaches Thursday. According to the National Weather Service there will be a 20 percent chance of showers after 3 p.m. in the Cedar Rapids area and a 40 percent chance after midnight. When not raining, it should be mostly cloudy, with a high near 79 degrees. The low temperature on Wednesday night will be about 61. Linn County Attorney Jerry Vander Sanden announced that he will be retiring after being the elected county attorney for over 11 years. In recent years, the 38-year veteran of the office has faced some challenges over decisions made during his tenure involving shootings by police officers. One such case was https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/cedar-rapids-agrees-to-pay-8-million-settlement-to-jerime-mitchell/ (Jerime Mitchell), who was shot and paralyzed by former Cedar Rapids police officer Lucas Jones on Nov. 1, 2016. Vander Sanden on Tuesday didn't mention the Mitchell case or others, but said he has no regrets for the decisions he made and stands by them. Vander Sanden recommended that the Linn County Board of Supervisors appoint assistant Linn County attorney Nick Maybanks to finish out his term, and said Maybank is the only one currently at the office who has expressed interest in running for the position. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds will join nine other Republican governors Wednesday in visiting the Texas-Mexico border and holding a news conference to discuss what they term a “border crisis” and the Democratic Biden administration's response to it. Reynolds' office did not provide details of the governor's itinerary other than to confirm she will be part of a tour of the U.S. southern border and will hold a conference call with Iowa reporters afterward in the midafternoon. Asked Tuesday if the Iowa governor's trip to Texas was considered official state business that would be paid for by state funds, Alex Murphy, the governor's communications director, confirmed her office considered it an official visit. A plan that would have thrown more than 60 incumbent legislators into election districts with at least one other lawmaker and dramatically changed the state's four congressional districts was rejected Tuesday by the Republican majority in the Iowa Senate. In Iowa, the https://www.thegazette.com/state-government/iowa-redistricting-maps-2021-proposed-redistricting-for-iowas-congressional-legislative-districts/ (proposed maps )are drawn by the nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency's legal and data analysts. The boundaries are supposed to be drawn without consideration of political ramifications, such as how new district lines will affect individual lawmakers' re-election chances or the balance of power. This process has long been considered a model for fairness that national analysts feel should be emulated by other states. State law calls for the maps to be drawn, as much as possible, in square, rectangular or hexagonal shapes so as to avoid irregular-shaped districts. Republican Senators, who voted unanimously against the first draft, cited a desire for a new draft with less irregular districts. Democratic senators, who voted unanimously for the first draft, accused Republicans of tampering with a historically impartial process. The process now returns to the Legislative Services Agency to prepare a second map. Like the first, lawmakers will vote it up or down without amendment. If that is rejected, a third map will be prepared. If they choose, lawmakers can amend that one — essentially drawing their own map. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, June 9. Wednesday's weather will continue many of the same themes as Tuesday's did: muggy and sunny, with an occasional chance of rain. According to the National Weather Service it will be 91 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area with mostly sunny skies. There will be a 20 percent chance of showers after noon. Besides that, a calm wind will blow at about 5 mph. Under legislation signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Kim Reynolds, Iowa's public colleges and governmental entities are now prohibited from teaching concepts that the Iowa Legislature has deemed divisive --- including that moral character is determined by one's race or sex, or that the United States and Iowa are fundamentally or systematically racist. The governor's office released a statement with the bill signing criticizing Critical Race Theory, an academic discipline examining systemic racism in society that has become a bugbear on Fox News and in conservative think tanks like the Heritage Foundation. The vote on this bill was almost entirely along party lines, with the support of majority Republicans and the opposition of Democrats. The Cedar Rapids City Council authorized the city manager Tuesday to sign off on an agreement to settle a lawsuit filed by Jerime Mitchell and his wife asserting a white police officer recklessly shot and paralyzed Mitchell, a Black motorist, in 2016. The city had prepared to go to trial in April to defend the actions of Lucas Jones, the officer who shot Mitchell, even though the police department had since fired him for a different incident. But on April 19, the day before the case was slated to go to trial, insurance carrier States Insurance agreed to https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/cedar-rapids-agrees-to-pay-8-million-settlement-to-jerime-mitchell/ (pay the Mitchells $8 million), without acknowledging fault or liability on the part of the defendants. The settlement was announced the same day a Minneapolis jury began to deliberate the fate of Derek Chauvin, the former Minnesota police officer who jurors later found guilty of murdering 46-year-old George Floyd by kneeling on his neck. Former Lone Tree Mayor Jon Green, a Democrat, ran away with Tuesday's special election for a seat on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, picking up 9,718 of the total 14,711 votes cast — about 66 percent. This vote total allowed him to easily beat his two challengers, Republican Phil Hemingway and independent Brian Campbell. Green will fill the seat vacated in April by former supervisor Janelle Rettig, when she resigned suddenly to focus on her health. Later that month, three county officials opted to host a special election to fill out the remainder of her term, which expires Dec. 31, 2022. Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield said it is seeking federal approval to offer Medicare Advantage plans beginning in 2022. If approved by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the state's largest insurance carrier would offer plans under a new affiliate — Wellmark Advantage Health Plan — to Iowans and South Dakotans during this coming fall's annual enrollment period. Officials did not specify when they anticipate federal approval could arrive. Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, are health plans offered by private companies with approval from the federal agency. These plans provide both Medicare Part A — which covers hospital and nursing home care — and Medicare Part B — which handles medically necessary services and other preventive health care. The Balut Kiki Project: Uniquely Pinoy. Unapologetically Queer.
Warning: This project contains mature and sensitive themes such as depression and suicide. Listener discretion is advised.Fabulous people, represent! We meet Geoff and Mel as they kiki about the origins of the project and how it came from the darkest of places: a diagnosis of clinical depression and a history of suicidal ideation. They cite existing jarring statistics of the often overlooked problem of mental health, and discuss the difficulties of a triple whammy: living with this diagnosis as members of the queer community, and as Filipinos (worse, if you live in Pilipinas nating mahal). The topic of prevalent bullying of gays and other queer people in society and the stigma is highlighted as some of the culprits of depression and suicide within the community. Resources for Filipinos suffering from mental health issues are mentioned. Lucas Jones, a rainbow counsellor, drops by to briefly share his experiences in dealing with these problems with the LGBTQIA+ community and offers some sound advice on how to offer help to somebody who might be going through a rough patch. Finally, Mel and Geoff discuss why the project is called, of all things, Balut Kiki!Welcome to the project and we hope we check out our other episodes! For more resources: www.balutkiki.com.:::::::::If you are listening to us on Spotify, ApplePodcasts, Podchaser, PodcastAddict, etc., please leave us a rating and a review. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, April 20. We are continuing our hot and cold weather cycle with a return to cold. The good news is that we will be back to warm by the end of the week. According to the National Weather Service there will be a slight chance for snow before 8 a.m. Tuesday in the Cedar Rapids area. Also there will be a slight chance for rain through the rest of the early morning and afternoon. Besides that it will be mostly cloudy and brisk, with a high near 45 degrees. For all you spring gardeners out there, make some plans to protect your plants, because widespread frost is expected early Wednesday morning. A day before a lawsuit asserting a white police officer recklessly shot and paralyzed a Black motorist in 2016 was to go to trial, an insurance carrier for the city of Cedar Rapids agreed Monday to pay motorist Jerime Mitchell and his wife $8 million. The city maintained it was prepared to go to trial and defend the actions of the officer involved in the shooting, Lucas Jones, even though the police department since has fired him. But insurance carrier States Insurance agreed to the deal, without acknowledging fault or liability on the part of the defendants. The settlement is subject to approval by the City Council, which is set to next meet on April 27. Mitchell's attorneys said they believe the $8 million deal with Cedar Rapids is a “record settlement for a police-involved shooting case in Iowa.” In comparison, a federal lawsuit brought by the estate of https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/2-million-settlement-between-steele-family-city-of-burlington-finalized-years-after-fatal-police-s/ (Autumn Steele), who accidentally was shot and killed by a Burlington police officer in 2015, was settled for $2 million. Mitchell was shot in the early morning of Nov. 1, 2016, near Coe College. Authorities said Jones stopped Mitchell after spotting a light out on his pickup truck's license plate. Police later said Mitchell had marijuana, a scale, and cash in his possession at the time of the arrest, but no charges were ever brought against him. It appears a state budget bill dealing with health and human services could become a sticking point between Republicans in the Iowa House and Iowa Senate as they work to close out the legislative session. Senate Republicans are pushing for a state takeover of mental-health funding currently supported by local property taxes, and creation of an asset verification system for food assistance recipients — ideas that have not caught fire across the Capitol rotunda with their House GOP compatriots. House Republicans have expressed caution about making major tax changes this year due to economic uncertainty caused by the pandemic and some yet-to-be-clarified stipulations that might come with billions of dollars in federal pandemic relief. The Eastern Iowa Health Center has opened its COVID-19 vaccine clinic to anyone age 18 and older. The Cedar Rapids-based clinic, which is a federally qualified health center, will offer the two-dose Moderna vaccine, according to a news release Monday. People who receive the first dose will be scheduled for the follow-up second dose, officials said. Those seeking a COVID-19 vaccine can schedule an appointment with the Eastern Iowa Health Center online. You can find them at https://easterniowahealthcenter.com/ (EasternIowaHealthCenter.com). This weekend is going to be the start of things feeling even more like spring. According to the National Weather Service on Saturday it will be a bit warmer than the day before, with a high of 46 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area and mostly sunny skies. Then it will bounce quite a bit higher on Sunday, with a high temperature of 56 degrees and also mostly sunny skies. It will be a little windy on Sunday, with wind speeds of 10 to 15 mph gusting as high as 20 mph. By early next week we should be enjoying high temperatures in the sixties. Starting March 8, Iowans younger than 65 will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine if they have underlying medical conditions that put them at an increased risk of severe illness from the coronavirus. The Iowa Department of Public Health made the announcement late Thursday in a news release, saying the decision comes after several counties have reported nearing completion of distributing the vaccine to other priority populations. Previously these populations had focused primarily on those above 65, those in healthcare professions, and other frontline workers. If news of this came as a surprise to you, you are in good company. Several local public health departments told the Gazette they were pivoting their COVID-19 vaccine distribution plans on Friday and will continue this work through the weekend. This comes after they were surprised to learn a change would be taking effect on Monday for a plan they had just heard about the night before. For some counties, this will mean a change in messaging over who is eligible, while for others they have decided to stick with serving their priority populations first, regardless of the state's directive. A civil trial against the City of Cedar Rapids and a white police officer who shot a Black man during a 2016 traffic stop, leaving him paralyzed, remains on track to start next month in Linn County District Court. Lawyers for Jerime and Bracken Mitchell, who filed the lawsuit in 2017 after Jerime Mitchell was shot Nov. 1, 2016, had a pretrial conference Friday with lawyers for the city and for Lucas Jones, a former Cedar Rapids police officer. Jones shot at Mitchell three times after a drug-related traffic stop escalated. One of the bullets hit Mitchell in the neck, paralyzing him. A Grand Jury at the time decided against bringing charges against Jones, who was later dismissed from the police department for a different incident. Cedar Rapids high school students will get to walk across the stage for their diplomas during in-person graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2021, the district announced Friday. The ceremonies for Jefferson, Kennedy and Washington high schools will be held in the Alliant Energy PowerHouse, formerly known as the U.S. Cellular Center. Metro High School's ceremony will be held at the DoubleTree convention Center. This briefing is sponsored in part by Corridor Careers. Madeline (Maddie) Jones is the editor-in-chief of Plus Model Magazine (PMM) and one of the pioneers of the plus size fashion industry. She is sometimes referred to as the Anna Wintour of plus size, and through her work has blazed a trail that many of us have the pleasure of following in. Maddie’s presence in the industry pre-dates the social media crazed world we live in now. From the beginning, Maddie has been using her voice to create a space for plus size women in the fashion industry. All along, she and her husband, photographer Lucas Jones, have been documenting the faces of plus size women and challenging society’s expectations of how plus size bodies should be photographed. In my own journey as a plus size model, Maddie has been there since the beginning. I did my very first test shoot with Maddie, and along the way she has supported me and guided me at every turn. Maddie has so much wisdom to share with models at any stage of their career, but she’s got an especially great perspective for women looking to launch their modeling career. Maddie’s advice is hard-hitting, straight talk about what it really takes to build a successful modeling career for yourself as a plus size woman. It’s not always an easy road, but it can be incredibly rewarding! And regardless of whether or not you wind up getting signed by an agency, Maddie has advice for all of us about how to use our voices, how to conduct ourselves in business relationships, and how to create our own opportunities as women. Key takeaways: The early days of Maddie’s advocacy for plus size women, and how PMM got its start What it takes to build a brand like PMM, and how Maddie put her publication on the map Maddie’s journey of coming out from “behind-the-scenes” and putting herself out there as an influencer Maddie’s journey as an Autism Mom The importance of being authentic (don’t try to be “the next Ashley Graham,” or anyone else!) Why you should never take things personally in your business The importance of having your own, unique point of view when creating content as an influencer How we can make a greater impact when we work together with other women, rather than just trying to advance our own image The essential steps you must take if you want to launch a successful modeling career Some reasons that you might not actually want to become a plus size model--it’s not just about being a pretty girl! Why you don’t need to become a plus size model to validate your worth, or to make a positive impact in the world Mentioned in this episode: Plus Model Magazine Maddie’s personal brand Maddie’s husband, photographer Lucas Jones Maddie’s journey as an Autism Mom Share the Body Love!
