Chuck Norris was a hero of American cinema forged in the Cold War. Today we're going to honor his life from a Cold War perspective. His character begins with real life service in the Air Force in Korea. He would go on to work in the military industrial complex, lose a brother in Vietnam and take on America's enemies, both foreign and domestic on the silver screen. We'll discuss Missing in Action, Invasion USA, Delta Force, Good Guys Wear Black and more.

"If you live through this, tell Rostov it's time to die." When a bunch of evil Russian and Cuban shits invade Miami for reasons that never made quite clear, it's up to Chuck Norris and his beard to take a break from wrestling alligators in the Everglades(!), don his double denim and kick some serious ass. No shortage of mindless violence and explosions ensue. The '80s action cheesefest INVASION U.S.A. (1985) is up next on CITIZEN FRAME -- join us! Enjoy! #ChuckNorris #JosephZito #RichardLynch
Few things are more American than action movies where lone heroes murder foreigners with lethal impunity. Invasion USA proudly carries that torch. Only it does so poorly. Like most films starring the bearded badass known as Carlos "Chuck" Norris, Invasion USA is a Cannon joint. Yes, that Cannon. The script sucks, it looks cheap, and it somehow makes less sense than most other films in the genre. What it does do well, though, is depict all manor of patriotic fueled violence. So, come for the jean vest and dry quips but stay for the bazooka dismemberment. Now, sit back, stretch out those legs with a Big Dippa from Reformation Brewery, and find that armadillo! The Thunderous Wizard, Chumpzilla, and Bling Blake are dual-wielding uzis in our best Canadian tuxedos! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – America wasn't ready, but he was! Lingering Questions – What was Chuck's finest kill? (31:44) The "Everglades Airboat" Trivia Challenge – Chumpzilla challenges the field to trivia about the movie. (43:15) Recommendations – We offer our picks for the week and next up: We continue our Hops and Kicking Jeans Flops series with Sidekicks! For Your Consideration is another mockumentary from acclaimed satirist Christopher Guest. But unlike his previous efforts, this one failed to capture the hearts of longtime fans. Taking aim at the absurdity of Hollywood, For Your Consideration fails to find the magic of his prior three films. The characters are less likable, the target is far larger, and the narrative focus just never finds its center. Its reviews and tepid box office reception reflect that dip in quality. With a budget double that of A Mighty Wind's ($12 million), it grossed less than a third of that movie's total ($5.9 million). Now, sit back, prep your Oscars speech while enjoying a Backyard Berry from Blake's, and go easy on the face lift! The Thunderous Wizard, Chumpzilla, and Bling Blake are going home for Purim! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – A film about the movies, about the movies! Lingering Questions – Why didn't this work better? (38:46) The "Hollywood Now" Trivia Challenge – Bling Blake challenges the field to trivia about the movie. (51:35) Recommendations – We offer our picks for the week and next up: We begin our Hops and Kicking Jeans Flops series with Invasion USA! So you've developed a sequel to one of your recent "successes," but the legendary action star of the previous film has decided he doesn't want to do a follow-up. Are you supposed to scrap the whole thing? Not if you're Cannon Films, who knew better than to throw out all the work they had already done on a potential Invasion USA sequel, and instead decided to rework it into a new potential franchise starter of its own. "Misfired Cannons" continues as we look at 1986's Avenging Force, which saw Chuck Norris replaced with Cannon's own pet-project up-and-coming star, Michael Dudikoff. Here, Dudikoff takes over the role of Matt Hunter (or is maybe a totally different Matt Hunter?), this time taking on an an underground society of crazed right-wing extremists that likes to hunt men for sport. We discuss Dudikoff's place in the Cannon legacy, the movie's surprising-for-the-time-and-genre politics, the perpetual underutilization of co-star Steve James, and much more.
For film fans of the '80s, one studio was synonymous with over-the-top action, wild premises, and low to mid-budget insanity. Cannon Films delivered a massive output of video store staples and cable classics, and today are looked back on nostalgically as an entertaining alternative to the "big" studio fare of the era. But Cannon certainly had at least one thing in common with the major studios - their fare share of failed franchise starters. So we're devoting two months to the studio's "Misfired Cannons." First up, a look at the 1985 Chuck Norris vehicle Invasion USA, which sees the denim-clad action icon single-handily take on an army of foreign terrorists invading the United States. It might not be the "best '80s action movie," but it is arguably the "most '80s action movie." But we couldn't discuss such a crazy cult-classic alone, so for this discussion we're joined by Bryan Kristopowitz, author of the "Gratuitous B-Movie Column" on the 411mania website, and the recently published book, Not Coming to a Theater Near You!: 50 Great Direct-to-Video Action Flicks of the Early 2000s. So slip on your Chuck Norris Action Jeans, and join us for an in-depth discussion of one of the wildest action movies, and movie studios, of all time! It's an action extravaganza this week on THE BIG 4-0 as Ron and Peter wish an explosive happy 40th birthday to two movies with enough tossed grenades, wasted ammo, and cars exploding on contact for the entire decade - with two of the decades biggest action stars, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chuck Norris - in the '80s action-flick prototypes COMMANDO and INVASION USA. We also throw some birthday cake at Glenn Close and Jeff Bridges in JAGGED EDGE. Please remember to Rate Like, and Subscribe; and we'll be back in two weeks with a Happy BIG 4-0 for REMO WILLIAMS: THE ADVENTURE BEGINS... (spoiler: that's also where his adventure ended) and another Stephen King adaptation, this one staring Gary Busy and Corey Haim, SILVER BULLET!
After last week's break, THE BIG 4-0 returns to wish a happy belated birthday to John Candy's (first) bid to carve out a career as the slapsticky dad in the bumbling vacation comedy SUMMER RENTAL. We also wish an early happy BIG 4-0 to Martin Scorsese's one-night-tapped-in-SoHo surrealist dramady, AFTER HOURS. And, of course, this week's birthday boy is none other than The Koff (as we like to call him) in the omnipresent video-store-shelf slice of 1980s action cheese, AMERICAN NINJA. Ron and Peter also touch on a bevy of other films, including recent releases SINNERS, WEAPONS, NOBDY 2, HAPPY GILMORE 2, and THE NAKED GUN (reboot/legacy sequel), as well as a handful of older films including COUPLES RETREAT, REVENGE, and THE CHASE. Please remember to Rate, Like, and Subscribe, and we'll be back in two weeks with a banger BIG 4-0 birthday line-up: COMMANDO, INVASION USA, and JAGGED EDGE! Happy Labor Day, everybody!

So close to being Cannon but our terrorists actually have a beef with America?!
If you could pick an American action hero, you really can't go wrong with Chuck Norris. This classic Cannon Film Group schlock fest is amazing, with guns, feet, jeep chases, rocket launchers, and they actually blow up a damn neighborhood. Like, a *real* neighborhood. Insane. Enjoy us laughing our way through this incredible film and we'll get on recording the next one for everyone soon. We mentioned at the end of our last pod what we were doing, but we called an audible and it has changed.
The 80s were truly the Golden Age of American Cinema - and America in general, sure. You could solve almost any problem by shooting at it, and you had movie stars like Chuck Norris, who could believably stop a Russian invasion all by themselves. Unfortunately, INVASION USA was met with derision from snobby critics everywhere, so it's time for The Contrarians to celebrate it. Listen to Alex & Julio as they embrace their inner badasses and turn their brains off in the best possible way!TIMELINE00:01:16 Invasion USA00:17:03 Contrarians Corner- Wanna know how we really feel about INVASION USA? Okay then, back to the present. Can we still enjoy the wall-to-wall senseless violence of an 80s action-fest in 2023 America? Is it possible there's a valid reason why movies like INVASION USA aren't wildly popular anymore? Has the window for a Chuck Norris renaissance closed? It's a Real Talk segment that goes in many directions - and yes, one of those directions is Alex waxing poetic about practical effects.TIMELINE00:00:59 Now on Patreon00:11:16 Real Talk00:52:13 The Future & Perennial Plugs- Interested in more Contrarians goodness? Okay, so COLOR OUT OF SPACE looks as spectacular as the best Windows screensaver, and then some. But is there anything behind it? That's the main question driving this Real Talk segment, and we throw a few things around: the true value of an unhinged Cage performance, how much would being familiar with the Lovecraft story enrich the viewing experience, and would we change anything about the way this material was approached? It's all here, and it's real!TIMELINE00:00:43 Now on Patreon00:09:32 Real Talk00:52:35 The Future & Perennial Plugs- Interested in more Contrarians goodness?
