Innovating Higher Education for a New Era When it comes to higher education, innovation isn't just about generating ideas; it's about knowing how to implement them effectively. In a world that's rapidly changing, colleges and universities need to adapt to meet the needs of today's students. Dr. Philly Mantella, the President of Grand Valley State University, is at the forefront of this innovation, breaking down the structural barriers of traditional education models and creating a student-centric approach to overcome enrollment challenges. Breaking Barriers and Embracing Change The landscape of higher education has shifted dramatically over the years, and it's essential to break away from the traditional structures that were designed for a different demographic. This innovation recognizes the need to adapt to today's age and demographic. A Student-Centric Approach One of the key aspects of this innovation is a student-centric approach. The focus is on the students themselves. By addressing their needs, aspirations, and challenges, new ways are being found to create a supportive and engaging educational experience. Preparing Graduates for the Business World In today's competitive job market, it's not just about earning a degree; it's about being business-ready. The commitment is to ensure that graduates from Grand Valley State University possess the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in their chosen careers. This means building a curriculum that goes beyond traditional subjects and includes essential skills like critical thinking, teamwork, and digital literacy. Redefining the Public Good While higher education has long been associated with the concept of the public good, this innovation takes a broader view. Yes, it involves civic engagement and community service, but it also means producing graduates who are ready to contribute to the workforce and society. It's about equipping students with the skills they need to make a meaningful impact beyond the classroom. Three Key Takeaways for Higher Education Leaders Embrace innovation as a way to break down structural barriers and adapt to the changing landscape of higher education. Prioritize a student-centric approach that addresses the unique needs and challenges of today's students. Ensure that graduates are not just academically prepared but also business-ready, with skills that go beyond traditional disciplines. Implementing innovation in higher education is not an option; it's a necessity. This approach serves as inspiration and how-to for colleges and universities looking to thrive in a new era of learning, prepare students for success in their careers, and benefit society. Why is Dr. Philomena Mantella so passionate about first-generation students? Navigating recent attacks on DEI initiatives How business and industry can be key allies to DEI education QUOTABLES: “The opportunities we have with diverse students or students that have been underserved or underrepresented in higher education is to give them that sense of possibility that perhaps they haven't contemplated before.” “I get really frustrated when I hear people say things like, ‘we don't have enough talent.' Because we are leaving so many people out of the knowledge economy or not relating to other educational pathways more seamlessly, creating these ceilings.” “We see the promise of individuals of all backgrounds, but we understand that those structures of systemic inequity are really inhibiting the equality of opportunity.” GUEST RESOURCES: About the Diverse Organizational Impact and Transformation Certification diverseeducation.com/page/DOIT Setting the Tone in DEI, Accessibility Work diverseeducation.com/from-the-magazine/article/15306543/attention-to-details OR FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Twitter: http://twitter.com/diverseissues Instagram: http://instagram.com/diverseissuesinhighereducation Facebook: http://facebook.com/DiverseIssuesInHigherEducation/ Linkedin: http://linkedin.com/company/diverse-issues-in-higher-education Transcription services are available upon request. For high school graduates, the expectation to obtain a college degree seems higher than ever, but greater still is the pressure to pursue a marketable course of study to offset the heavy price tag. The student loan crisis signifies that it's time for a change in how we view higher education, and Philomena Mantella, a leader in higher-ed innovation and the new president of Grand Valley State University, has a plan to redefine higher education. The first female president of GVSU, Philomena joins Lynne Golodner on this episode of the Make Meaning podcast to share her vision for fusing earning with learning, making education more accessible to a diverse group of students, and why viewing education as a linear path is old-school.
Deborah Mantella is a Yankee-Italian transplant to the South and she is the author of a very Southern novel called My Sweet Vidalia. It's full of very Southern characters. Critics have compared it to books like The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, The Color Purple by Alice Walker, and The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. Deborah has said before that writing fiction gives her a place where she can work out her own personal questions about things in life and the personal song and dance that lives inside her. So how--as a Northern born author--did she discover her Southern voice? What is the author's voice? How do you find the author's tone? I wanted to find out the answers to those questions and more about Deborah's process, so we sat down to discuss how her traits--Northerner, Southerner, writer, and mom--combine to make her a unique individual. She told me about the importance of bringing her personal experiences to storytelling, how she finds a way to live in her character's skin for awhile before relinquishing control and seeing where the story takes you, and we discussed a few tricks we use to get folks to open up at book events.
