I am wrapping up the week with a new episode of Talkin' Rock with Ian Hill from the Priest and Stephen Richards of Taproot. First, Ian Hill talks about all things Judas Priest. Does he like touring or recording more? Has he read Rob Halford's book? We talk about the careers of Judas Priest and Black Sabbath and their overlap. Plus, he talks about how they brought "Ripper" into the band, and questions from bass players Frank Bello and David Ellefson. Stephen Richards from Taproot called in this week. We discuss the band, what they have planned for the near future, and a new song he lends his voice to with an artist named Wes Anderson. It's called "Goodbye" and drops today (August 30th) Enjoy!
This week, we're scratching The Itch to collaborate! Wes Anderson is a longtime internet friend of ours with an impeccable record of guest features on his music. His new single, "Goodbye," features two-time Itch guest Stephen Richards of Taproot, and his previous track, "Heads Are Gonna Roll," features Benji Webbe of The Itch's Official Favorite Band, Skindred. So the time had finally come for Wes himself to be a guest on the show! Join us for an enlightening conversation about life as an independent artist, the downsides of creating a diverse portfolio of music, and exactly how he makes connections, and even friendships, with so many talented artists. Enjoy, and pre-save "Goodbye" here! If you like what you hear, you can hear more of us every Sunday night broadcasting rock to the masses from 6-9pm CST on KCLC-FM. They are six-legged, hairy home invaders that will not die, no matter how hard you try. 它们是六足、毛茸茸的家庭入侵者,无论你多么努力,它们都不会死。 Cockroaches are experts at surviving indoors. But they did not start out that way. 蟑螂是室内生存的专家。 但他们一开始并不是这样的。 A recent study uses genetics to examine cockroaches' spread across the world, from beginnings in southeast Asia to Europe and beyond. The findings cover thousands of years of cockroach history and suggest the pests may have spread across the world by getting a ride with another species: people. “It's not just an insect story...It's an insect and humanity story,” said Stephen Richards of Baylor College of Medicine. Richards was not involved with the study.“这不仅仅是一个昆虫的故事......这是一个昆虫和人类的故事,”贝勒医学院的斯蒂芬·理查兹说。 理查兹没有参与这项研究。 Researchers studied the genes of over 280 cockroaches from 17 countries and six continents. They confirmed that the German cockroach — a species found worldwide — has its beginnings in southeast Asia. The creature likely evolved from the Asian cockroach around 2,100 years ago. Scientists have long suspected the German cockroach's Asian beginnings since similar species still live there. The research appeared recently in the publication Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. 这项研究最近发表在《美国国家科学院院刊》上。 The cockroaches then spread around the world on two major paths. They traveled west to the Middle East about 1,200 years ago, perhaps living in soldiers' food storage containers. And they may have gotten on Dutch and British East India Company trade ships to get to Europe about 270 years ago, the scientists' findings suggest. Once the creatures arrived in Europe, inventions like the steam engine and indoor plumbing likely helped the insects travel further and get used to living indoors, where they are most commonly found today. 这些生物抵达欧洲后,蒸汽机和室内管道等发明很可能帮助这些昆虫走得更远,并习惯了室内生活,而如今它们最常见的地方就是室内。 Researchers said exploring how cockroaches conquered past environments may lead to better pest control. 研究人员表示,探索蟑螂如何征服过去的环境可能会有助于更好地控制害虫。 Modern-day cockroaches are tough to keep away because they evolve quickly to resist pesticides, said the study's writer Qian Tang of Harvard University. 该研究的作者、哈佛大学的唐钱表示,现代蟑螂很难被赶走,因为它们进化得很快,能够抵抗杀虫剂。

Taylor Roberts from Taproot/Riding With Killers joins me on Talkin' Rock with Meltdown. We started off talking about RWK. He explained how the band formed, talked about their debut record "Full Circle" and more. He said they've done some pretty big shows, but it's time to get that band out to the forefront. "We're really getting ready to launch this band in the right way," he told me. He talked to me about being a fan of Taproot, and finally becoming a member of the band. He spoke about how he ended up in Detroit through a member of the band, coming from Mississippi. When I asked Taproot frontman Stephen Richards and drummer Jarrod Montague to give me some questions for Taylor, they did not disappoint. They told me to ask him about meeting the Kittie in Las Vegas. Apparently, he was a huge fan growing up as a teenager. They also told me to ask him about looking like Slipknot frontman, Corey Taylor. That was hysterical! I guess he's been confused for him several times. In Taproot, he plays guitar, but in Riding With Killers he's more upfront. "The challenge of putting myself in the lead singer spot, and then finally getting to write about things that have been on my mind and in my head and heart for years, is very cathartic and it's been honestly a great release". It was great to have Taylor on Tallkin' Rock!

Stephen Richards of Taproot joins Nu Pod this week to do an Audio Autopsy on their debut, Gift. Ro and Joshua get all the details and the behind the scenes of making the record. Stephen tells the story of System Of A Down helping get the band a record deal, selecting Ulrich Wild to produce and being on tour with Papa Roach when the album was released. He then tells a stroy of "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" buying multiple copies of the album and driving over them. The guys dive into the album and go track by track. Stephen discusses the name "Taproot" and it not pigeonholing the band into just one style. The "Again and Again" video shoot is dissected. Did Disturbed get inspiration from "Emotional Times"? Taproot played European festivals with Linkin Park and Deftones. Stephen talks about being big into Bone Thugs and rap when he became the singer for the band. The story behind "1 Nite Stand" is bananas. Toomey can't pronounce "Mentobe"! What is the "Gift"? They really wanted the "Deftones snare" and he thinks they got it on "Dragged Down". The story behind"He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" (Fred Durst) is told and the history with the band. Did "Nookie" have a similar formula to Taproot? The guys finish off the episode talking about the new Taproot release, SCSSRS.
It was great to talk to Phil from Taproot. Taproot dropped in Madison at the Taste of Madison. This week's guest on Discover New Music is Stephen Richards of Taproot discussing the band's seventh studio album "SCSSORS". 80 percent of the record was done while supporting 2012's "The Episodes" but the demos were shelved for over a decade, but found new life in this latest release. Steve also talks about producing the album himself, recording with Elias of Nonpoint and much more! Plus a quick round of Rapid Fire is played and Steve shares a surprising favorite band of his. Peanut production in the US is skyrocketing. Ten years ago, US peanut farmers produced a two-million-ton crop. Today it's three million. In ten more years, it will likely be four million. Putting future peanut crops to good use will take innovative approaches and requires attention now to set farmers and the industry up for success. In this episode, we'll learn about promising areas of innovation—like peanuts' benefits for poultry and egg production, high-oleic and high oil content peanuts and even peanuts as alternatives for gluten and dairy in food products—to push this crop into new frontiers and keep peanut farming profitable. Stephen Richards, vocalist of alt-metal legends Taproot joins me on Psychic Warfare this week to speak about how humor (especially dark humor) has a spiritual power all its own, how he feels he's been guided on an invisble track of fate for his life, the reality of his experiences with astral projection, and much more. Also, be sure to look out for his absolutely wild story of how he met his current wife - aptitude test to OKCupid? You'll see the spiritual power of humor first hand in this episode! The Taproot machine cranked up this week. They pegged down a date for the new album, announced some shows and pretty much hopped back onto the scene. Singer, Steve Richards, was cool enough to swing by the station for an interview about everything the band has going on. He told me about the entire making of the album, which he did all by himself. It's over a decade or recording, writing and finetuning each note. It's called SC/SSRS (Scissors) and drops on September 29th. The band is going to celebrate its release with a couple shows at the Machine Shop in Flint, Mi. that weekend, the first of which sold right out right away, plus some other shows including the Blue Ridge Rock Fest with some of the biggest names in rock. He tells me about some of the songs, one that's as close to a love song as he's ever gotten. He tells me about some special guests than join him on the record, as well as if he's going to send Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst a copy. LOL That's just for starters on this wide ranging conversation. The only way to do “The Transported Man” is with a bloody good double, and the only way to do a proper episode of I Like To Movie Movie is with a bloody good co-host! That's right, Movie Movie is once again a two-hander! Stephen Richards of the Hot Property podcast is now the other half of I Like to Movie Movie, and for his inaugural episode he has chosen a movie that has inspired countless Michael Caine impressions: Christopher Nolan's THE PRESTIGE! So sit back, forgive the echo (I did my best to reduce it in post — the issue will be fully corrected for the next episode, but I couldn't bear to lose such a solid episode, so you'll just have to deal), and enjoy! In 1879, 23-year-old Stephen Richards was arrested in his hometown of Mount Pleasant, Ohio - to where he fled after murdering a mother and three children in Nebraska. In the days that followed, he revealed at least nine murders at his hand. “Convict criminology,” Jeffrey Ian Ross explains in this Social Science Bites podcast, is “a network, or platform, that's united in the perception that the convict voice has been either neglected or marginalized in scholarship or policy debates in the field of criminology in general, and corrections in particular.” Ross, a professor in the School of Criminal Justice at the University of Baltimore, is one of the originators of the concept, he tells interviewer David Edmonds. Seeing “a big gap” in the work of criminology and corrections, in the early 1990s he and Stephen Richards focused on tapping “the lived experience of convicts” for this academic work. Both men had experience with the corrections system – Ross had worked for several years in a correctional institution and later was a social science analysts with U.S. Department of Justice, while Richards had spent three years in federal prison for marijuana distribution before becoming a professor. About half of the people in the field of convict criminology are either ex-convicts, have impacted by the prison system or are prison activists who have or are in the process of getting a PhD in criminology, Ross says. “Many people who have a criminal conviction try to keep it quiet,” Ross says about jobseekers in academe (or anywhere), and he's proud of the strides convict criminologists have made. “We've managed to forge a beachhead and produce very impressive scholarship,” he says, all the while offering authenticity and degree of inside knowledge. Convict criminology, he details, rests on three pillars: scholarly research, mentorship, and some sort of service or activism. All three pillars arise from a “desire and goal to make a meaningful impact on prison conditions.” So mentorship, for example, might involve having ex-cons be mentors in re-entry programs, while scholarly research benefits from both having an inside view that pays extra dividends when interviewing incarcerated or formerly incarcerated subjects and in understanding the nuances of their accounts. Ross has written, co-written or edited a number of books on criminology, including the Routledge Handbook of Street Culture and Convict Criminology for the Future, both out this year. He has received a number of awards over the years, including the University of Baltimore's Distinguished Chair in Research Award in 2003; the Hans W. Mattick Award, “for an individual who has made a distinguished contribution to the field of criminology and criminal justice practice,” from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2018 Last year he received both the John Howard Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences' Division of Corrections and the John Keith Irwin Distinguished Professor Award from the American Society of Criminology's Division of Convict Criminology.
This episode features the usual plethora of tunes, freed from the shackles of bpm, genre or era constraints. The only slight difference this week is that instead of doing my usual trick of playing a few tracks at a certain tempo then changing things up suddenly, for no particular reason this time I just started slow and worked my way up. It was fun, and on the journey from 102 to 124 bpm I fitted in a selection of mostly fairly new tracks from Toby O'Connor, Musta, Scruscru, Stephane Deschezeaux, Chewy Rubs, Alexny, Sauco, Young Pulse, Boogietraxx, Les Inferno and more. In hour two I introduce a very wonderful guest mix from Aberdeen DJs All Night Passion. I must admit that being all the way down here in London I hadn't heard of these guys until fairly recently, but I caught their guest mix on Stephen Richards' DiscoDaze show a few months back and it totally blew me away - there was something about the diverse but powerful selection of tracks expertly weaved together into something really exciting that had a big impact on me. I very quickly asked them if they'd like to do a guest mix for me, and I'm so happy that they said yes and put together another awesome hour of eclectic but brilliant tunes! Huge, huge thanks to All Night Passion for this guest mix - I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Please spread the word and show them some love… INSTAGRAM - https://www.instagram.com/allnightpassion/ SOUNDCLOUD - https://soundcloud.com/all-night-passion EVERYTHING ELSE - https://linktr.ee/allnightpassion Right, that's me done for another two weeks, I'll catch you on the 13th Sep with more tunes from me and another guest mix. A conversation with Stephen Richards, Sales and Marketing Director for Amphenol Australia. Stephen has been with Amphenol since 1998 through an acquisition of Alcatel Components. We talk about his unique sales role of expanding the audio connector business with design and manufacturing based in Australia while selling imported Amphenol products for many other markets. We talk about why Amphenol Australia's audio connectors are so well known and where the future of audio connectors is going. We talk about how taking four years to reconstruct a '57 Chevy was a sign that he is a true Amphenolian. And we talk about his desert island album, book, and Australian movie classic. On this episode it’s my pleasure to showcase a few tracks from the upcoming Hot Digits Year 7 compilation that’s out at the end of May, and that I have somehow managed to become involved in. I’ve got my contribution, as well as tracks from Andy Buchan, The Velvet Stripes, Stephen Richards and Ross Fitz, all of whom are joining me on what is a truly excellent compilation. I’ve also got new heat from Disco Lust, old heat from Change, George Duke and The Meters and other funky bric a brac. In the second hour I bring you a guest mix from Scottish DJ and music obsessive Ewan Mack. Hailing from Aberdeen but now living in Edinburgh, Ewan's love of music started from an early age when he started to listen to soul, funk and disco in the early 80s. In 1993, Ewan discovered house music after listening to a Graeme Park mix on Pete Tong's essential mix. A pair of belt drive turntables and basic mixer were purchased shortly afterwards and Ewan started DJing at house parties and birthday parties while at University. The belt drives were upgraded to 1210s which he still owns and Ewan continued to play at local nights in Aberdeen. He was a finalist in Cream's search for a resident DJ competition in 2002 just before it closed its doors! While a family and a career have taken over, Ewan still likes to collect a broad range of disco and soulful house-music although the tempo has moderated over the years. He makes regular recordings to share with like-minded music fans and started streaming on twitch during lockdown 2020. He references Graeme Park (fellow Aberdeen FC fan), MAW, Dave Lee, Norman Jay, Dimitri from Paris and Frankie Knuckles as major influencers. Ewan got in touch a while back to share some of his mixes, and as soon as I listened to one I had to invite him to record one for the show. Ewan’s mix is an expert selection of nu-disco delights, sometimes verging into soulful house, lots of reworks of classics, really funky, just what I look for in a guest mix. Big thanks to Ewan for a great mix, and if you like what you hear please head to Ewan’s Soundcloud and check out his other mixes. https://soundcloud.com/ewan-mack I’m back in two weeks bringing you a full on soulful mix from top bloke Iry Sabir - see you then! In the meantime, don’t forget that there’s a treasure trove of great shows to explore on Stream101’s Mixcloud - mixcloud.com/stream101 (PS, I made the rookie error of playing one of the tracks that Ewan dropped in my hour - argh! My bad, but that new Disco Lust tune is so good it deserves to be played twice!) I’m back to take you on a little journey through beautiful funky lands. I battle through a few tech problems thanks to a computer meltdown earlier in the week to bring you disco, boogie, hip hop, soul, acid, jack and some housey edits. Apologies it's a bit rough around the edges this time - technology eh? In the second hour I hand over as usual to a special guest, and this episode I’m pleased to bring you an hour of quality funky music from Pete Ellison. Pete tells me he had loads of fun recording this and was bouncing around in his living room, and that shines through in this mix. The quality of guest mixes recently has been phenomenal and this one is no exception, and I’m happy to welcome Pete to the Funkier Radio Family. Pete hosts a great show called Feel Good Fridays - it’s a bit like mine and I’m a big fan. Pete’s expert selections are perfect to get you in that Friday mood, and most weeks he has a guest mix too. Guests so far have included Smashed Atoms, Lez, Stephen Richards, Goz, Evil Smarty and… me! Pete was very kind to offer me a guest slot, and I’m really happy to return the favour. And he totally smashed it! You can catch Feel Good Fridays every Friday midday - 2pm on https://twitch.tv/pete_ellison, and on Pete’s Soundcloud - https://soundcloud.com/pete-ellison. I highly recommend tuning in! We decide to do something a little different mix wise ! So we asked Slightly Transformed Artists & Remixers to pick 3 tracks at 118 bpm and mix them ....we then took all ten mixes and seemed them altogether in the studio for one continuous mix. Stephen Richards, vocalist of Taproot, is the guest on this episode of the podcast. Stephen joins Jon to discuss the groups new b sides and demos collection cleverly titled “Besides”. Stephen tells an interesting how Layne Staley of Alice In Chains almost ended up on one of the bands songs and how the demo cd was found by Layne’s mother. We also delve a bit into why some of these songs were left on the cutting room floor, and how some of the demos became songs that found their way onto albums and much more. “To dream by night is to escape your life. To dream by day is to make it happen.” This quote by Stephen Richards should motivate you to do great things. But how do you translate motivation into action? The job market today is undergoing rapid change. Can you adapt or innovate under economic distress? Stephen Richards Today we continue our Opportunity Series from Richard Branson's Top 10 Quotes on Opportunity. This quote is by Stephen Richards, an author known as The Golden Pen. To dream by night is to escape your life. To dream by day is to make it happen." - Stephen Richards [bctt tweet="To dream by night is to escape your life. To dream by day is to make it happen. -- Stephen Richards"] Stephen Richards is a believer in the power of the subconscious mind and a qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist. He and I share that education and experience. I trained as and was qualified as a Clinical Hypnotherapist as well. I use a lot of the training I had in hypnotherapy and working with the subconscious mind to develop the 9 Steps To Successful Goal Achievement as well as using the Mental Bank program training to develop the Goal Getting, Don't Just Set'em Get'em Course that I share on the Goal Getting Podcast. We know that when we sleep and dream we are able to escape our life. Our dreams as we sleep are ways for our mind to vent the experiences of the day. It's a way to escape our life. But, as Stephen Richards says, when we dream by day, we can make it happen. It depends on what your dreams are. But the key thing I believe that he is saying in this quote is that we make our dreams happen by day because we do the actions necessary to achieve the dreams. We don't just escape, but we take action and take advantage of the opportunities to make the dreams happen. Start the day, making your dreams happen! Take action, seize the opportunities. I get a lot of my quotes from great books that I read. And if you like to listen to books on Audio like I do, I put together a deal with Audible to give Goal Getting Podcast listeners a FREE Audiobook of your choice AND a 30 Day Trial of Audibles service to try them out.
