In episode 72 of The Road to Wisdom Podcast, Chloe and Keshia chat with Lael Stone for another parenting chat. If you haven't listened to our first episode with Lael its definitely worth going back and tuning in. Lael Stone is an Australian Speaker, Educator and Author who's passion is supporting parents to understand their children, helping adults process their own childhood trauma and creating education systems that value emotional awareness. Everything is based on one fundamental principle – connection and compassion. The purpose of her work is to help all humans understand themselves better and be inspired to live the life they desire. Lael is so grounded and speaks with conviction when it comes to gentle parenting and although we wanted to break down some of the negative behaviours we see, this chat really did bring us back to the true meaning of what it shouldlook like when implementing this type of parenting correctly. This episode is a personal one about why we're not meant to do it all, and what happens when we try to keep going without help. Parenting isn't meant to be a solo act. Especially when life throws in a few curveballs or even just the regular chaos of life. If you've ever found yourself losing it with the kids or feeling like you're juggling too many balls (and dropping a few), this episode is for you. Here's what you'll learn: Why knowing all the emotional intelligence tricks is one thing, but actually applying them is a different story. The importance of connection over correction when supporting your child's behaviour (whether at home or in the classroom). How to use self-awareness to catch your own triggers before you react, and why this makes all the difference. Why it's okay to drop some of the balls you're juggling, and how to figure out what's really important. Practical steps for making sure you're filling up your own cup, because you can't pour from an empty one. Even though it can feel like you're the only one who's overwhelmed and barely holding it together, you're not. We're all in this together, and we need each other's support. You might know all the techniques, but practicing them in the moment is the real challenge….and that's okay. Be kind to yourself as you work through it. Resources Mentioned: If you missed the masterclass with Lael Stone and Dr. Billy Garvey, the replay is available. In this episode, I sit down with the incredible Michelle Mitchell, who's spent years working with teens, tweens, and their families. Supporting kids at this stage can feel overwhelming, especially when it seems like they've got that wall up and are shutting you out. There is so much more going on beneath the surface. Michelle Mitchell is a former teacher turned tween and teenage expert, with years of experience running youth programs, mentoring young people, and supporting families. She's all about helping adults to see what's really going on in the hearts and minds of tweens and teens and helping them build the kind of connections that truly make a difference. We talk about how we can really see and support teens and tweens in this phase of their development. It's not about being cool or getting it right all the time. What you'll learn from Michelle: Why what you see on the surface isn't the full story when it comes to teenagers. The importance of connection and how teens are wired to crave it, even when they push you away. How play can help upper primary and secondary students regulate their emotions (and why we should never cut it out too soon) The differences between tweens and teens, and why treating them the same is a massive mistake. How to work with social media, not against it, and create a school environment where teens feel safe to unplug and actually be present. There are smart, compassionate ways to help teens balance their online and offline worlds, with boundaries that actually feel good to them. Why the shift from primary to secondary school is huge and why this transition needs more attention. Michelle's no stranger to the challenges of this developmental phase and she's here to help you navigate them with compassion and clarity. No matter how tough your teen or tween acts, what they need most is to feel connected to the adults around them. We've had a whole lot of sickness in our house these past three weeks. Posie has had adenovirus and rhinovirus and then 10 days later, one by one, Hayds, Ray and I were struck with the worst type of gastro we've ever had.And so unsurprisingly, that's meant very little childcare these past three weeks and plenty of cancelled and postponed Ready or Not interviews. And so, for the sake of transparency and showing what it actually takes to make work, work as a mum, we're digging into the archives while we rebuild our library of interviews. If you've been around these parts from the very beginning, you may have heard this interview with one of Australia's favourite parents. And if you're newer to the show, you mightn't even be aware that the magnificent Lael Stone has even graced this podcast. Whether you fall into the former or the latter camps. I cannot recommend listening to the wise words within this episode enough. This episode was originally published over 18 months ago, and while I'd like to think my recording equipment and line of questioning has improved, Lael is a forever class act and I learned as much listening back to this episode as I did at the time. So let's get into it.See you back here with something new next week.---Lael Stone is a Parenting Educator, TEDx speaker, author, and the co-creator of Woodline Primary and The Aware Parenting Podcast. She has a son and two daughters ranging from their late teens to early adulthood, and in many ways, her career trajectory has mirrored her parenting journey. Now I don't know if it's that soothing voice or the way she holds space for those around her, but either way, an hour of conversation with Lael is much like a therapy session. I felt lighter after this chat, and I think you will, too. Here, we talk knowing when to walk away even when the party's humming, how we can help our children without solving their problems for them, and the moment she did a Ted talk in front of her adoring kids.---Thanks for listening to Ready or Not! If you liked the show, please tell your friends, subscribe or leave a review. You can also find us on Instagram at readyornot.pod.You can check out Lael's work online here. This podcast was recorded on the lands of the Boon Wurong people of the Kulin Nation. The land on which I''m lucky enough to raise my son always was and always will be Aboriginal land. I Pay The Rent and you can too here.

2023 was quite a year and re-listening to many of the episodes I have realised just how much gold I have forgotten. So I've pulled out some highlights for you as a bit of an aide memoire.* Senior maverick at Wired Magazine, Kevin Kelly, discusses things he wish he'd done more of with his kids.* Author and adventurer, Beau Miles on trusting yourself.* One of the things that we all going to have to contend with at sometime or other is death and grief and the chat I had with thanatologist, Cole Imperi was really helpful in preparing for how to discuss those difficult things with out kids in a way that is clear and supportive.* When it comes to being deliberate CEO of Bellroy, Andy Fallshaw, helped describe the importance of defining our values and updating our beliefs.* Considering 50% of the people we know and love experience periods it was insightful hearing about the menstrual cycle from author and musician, Lucy Peach.* Following on from this theme we chatted with Nutritionist and naturopath, Stacey Curcio about the changes that happen at the other end of the spectrum from puberty for women, perimenopause.* Last but not least we had educator, author, mother and parenting counsellor, Lael Stone imparting her wisdom around looking beneath the behaviour.2023 was also a year of travel for us and one of the things that worked really well when we were on the road was the kids each had Spriggy debit cards. So instead of them borrowing our debit cards to pay for things, especially as cash is something we hardly use ourselves now, they each have a card that has their pocket money pre-paid onto. All of which can be checked through an app on your phone. You can even give access to family and grandparents etc in case they want to give money to the kids as well.If you're in Australia and looking for a way to better manage how your kids deal with pocket money and spending I can't recommend Spriggy enough. If you'd like to give it a go it's usually $30 to get a card for each child but if you click this link you can get $20 back when you sign up.Big hugRich Get full access to The Dad Mindset at www.thedadmindset.com/subscribe

Every parent says they want their kids to feel loved, but in the middle of a meltdown or after being told no to lollies at the shops, kids don't always feel the love. Lael Stone is an Australian author, podcaster and parenting educator. She's in New Zealand for workshops about an approach to raising kids that's more about working on the relationship rather than just a set of skills to apply during the rough patches. It's called Connecting Parenting. Stone shares some ideas for helping kids with big feelings, some alternatives to punishment and rewards and how to help children understand that respect is a two way street.
Why can change be so unsettling for our toddlers? I mean, change up the snack crackers and you may have a major crisis on your hands. On this episode of My New Life, Jessical Rolph hosts Lael Stone, author of “Raising Resilient and Compassionate Children”. Never is our resilience put to the test more so than in the face of change. If you and your family are changing things up — be it a new home, new caregiver, or a new school, Lael will help you navigate what can be tricky terrain with your child. In addition to her work as a parent educator, she is a mother of three. You can find Lael @laelstone. Takeaways: A great way to ease children into a big change (or even a smaller transition) is to create pictures and talk through what's going to happen, who's going to be there, and how it's going to look. For those children that thrive on information, this dispels some of the anxiety around uncertainty. Make an effort to view change through the lens of your child. Even something like a visit to a new playground can feel scary. Meet their concerns with empathy and compassion rather than attempting to fix the situation, or justify why it's no big deal. Children process what's going on around them through play. Help your child to explore changes by creating a similar scenario with their favorite toys. It's a great time to ask questions like: How do you think Teddy is feeling about moving to a new home? Change often makes children feel powerless. Try a power reversal game to restore some sense of power. This is a game where your child gets to be faster or stronger or know more than you do! This conversation with Lael Stone was by far one of my favourite chats on the podcast to date. Some of the topics discussed in this episode: Importance of emotional intelligence not just for parents, but as a human How your 'reactions' to others are teaching you more about yourself than the other person The importance of being a role model as a parent How to unwind self-limiting beliefs often picked up as a child and what parents should be focusing on to minimise the chance of passing them onto their children How to learn the root cause of your child's behaviour and to not let your own emotions dictate your reactions as a parent How she started the incredible Woodline Primary and what values the school was built off The balance between allowing freedom and strictness with your children The power of human connection + much more Watch Lael's TedX Talk here @laelstone Visit Lael's website THANK YOU for listening, I really do appreciate everyone who tunes in each week. Lael Stone is a TEDx talk speaker, educator, and author on a mission to create wellness in families through education, connection and communication. If you were to ask Lael what it is that she does, she could sum it up in a sentence; “I speak for the heart of the child.” Whether it is supporting parents to understand their children, helping adults process their own childhood trauma, or creating education systems that value emotional awareness – it all comes back to connection and compassion. She began working in childbirth education and postnatal care in 2004 – working with couples through pregnancy, birth and the first few years of parenting as a Doula, Calmbirth® Practitioner and Postnatal trauma Counsellor. Working in this field certainly showed her the importance of connection and trust. From a woman trusting her baby and birthing body to learning all about how to parent with presence and awareness. However, her children have facilitated her greatest learning and self-discovery. From challenging and unexpected birth experiences to navigating fears and traumas, to holding on tight through the teen years, they continue to show her what is possible when you are free to be the true essence of yourself. In this episode, Lael and I have an honest conversation about what it means to be an aware parent and how to deeply connect with our children. We also discuss: Her journey to being an educator and working with families. What creating wellness in families looks like. The importance of being mindful, empathetic and compassionate with our children. Ways we can help and support our children to thrive emotionally. Her amazing TEDx talk: How to Raise Emotionally Intelligent Children. What it means to hold space for our children's wellbeing.
