Ever worked tirelessly for something, only to arrive and feel a little….different than you expected? In this reflective solo episode of Got Marketing?, Mia peels back the curtain on what it's really like to reach a long-held goal, and how it's perfectly normal for your perspective to shift once you get there. Fresh off the back of hosting a retreat with 17 brilliant women in business, Mia shares what surprised her most about the experience, the tension between ambition and arrival, and how business shapes and shifts who we are. This episode is an honest, soul-stirring reminder not to let your desire for more rob you of what's already working. Especially if what you have now is something your past self would have dreamt of.

Today I interview the inspiring Val Iswaszko who set up the famous Mullum Herbals in 1996 with his wife Annette Morgan. Mullum Herbals has been incredibly influential in the herbal medicine community in Australia, and has been mentioned on many occasions in this podcast. In this interview, Val gives insight into how Mullum Herbals was created and shares about the motivations behind this valuable business. He shares about the internship/clinic supervision opportunities that he generously offers to university students. We discuss the power of Andrographis, patient compliance VS dealing with bitter/foul tasting brews, the downfall of the industry mindset VS the community mindset in information sharing in Australia. Val shares about percolation tinctures and how naturopaths and herbalists can be running a more affordable dispensary by dispensing their own tinctures. We discuss the importance of sourcing local herbs and if importing herbs then ensuring they are high quality. Val reveals that is has been difficult to find local herbal medicine growers to supply his dispensary (get in touch if you are interested) although he would like to supply more local herbs than what he does currently. Together we dream weave a future where plants are the people's medicine, and everyday people are educated and educate each other about the medicine growing all around them. We envision more grassroots herbal education spaces and Val shares his plans for creating a 'Mums and Bubs" group which meets regularly under the guidance of a naturopath and receives empowering information which creating a support network. It was an honour to interview this herbal elder which I have heard affectionately referred to as the "grandfather of herbal medicine in Mullumbimby". He has created a wonderful legacy for future generations. *BUY ME A CUPPA* If you liked the episode and want more, a cuppa fuels our work and time, which is given for free. With special guest: Dr Gregory Smith… in conversation with Bill Kable When asked if he sometimes pinches himself and wonders if all that has gone before is true, Gregory Smith says not sometimes but all the time. Our guest today has a truly amazing story that should encourage all of us. After a traumatic childhood Gregory was always trying to escape from his surroundings and became something of an escape artist. Except that he did not escape and his efforts just led to painful encounters with the country Police of NSW. When his mother deceived him and left him at an orphanage in Armidale he spent 19 months experiencing institutional abuse. To make matters worse he was thinking all the time that his sisters were enduring something similar at the same institution after they were separated from him by the nuns on arrival. Following these experiences Gregory understandably would not trust adults. Having left school at the age of 14 and not being trained in anything useful Gregory found himself homeless, friendless and frequently jobless. It was only when he followed a road that led off the highway near Mullumbimby in northern NSW that he finally found peace in the isolation and tranquillity of a rainforest. Podcast (mp3)

Marcus has been lucky enough to interview so many centenarians in his career and he shares all the secrets of longevity and aging gracefully in this chat. You'll be happy to hear that there's so many simple things that you can do that have a remarkably positive impact on your health.  Marcus also shares all about his trips to the Greek island of Ikaria, which has been identified as one of the world's blue zones, and is known as “the island where people forget to die”. Melissa Lucashenko is a Miles Franklin award winning author of Bundjalung and European heritage. Her novels include Killing Darcy, Mullumbimby and Too Much Lip. Today we're going to be discovering her latest, Edenglassie. In the 1850's Meanjin/Brisbane is a mix of people from across the world, some transported for hard time, others drawn to the region for economic gain. Since the invaders arrived the local Yagara people have viewed them with suspicion and curiosity, unsure whether they might ever be able to regain their ancestral lands. Mulanyin has come to the area now known as Edenglassie and there he has discovered the beautiful Nita. Torn between his love and his home Mulanyin must navigate his path into manhood and the fraught times he finds himself in. In 2024 Meanjin/Brisbane is on the verge of two hundred years if settler colonial occupation. That might mean more to Granny Eddie if she wasn't stuck in the hospital waiting for whatever it is these doctors do. Eddie is more than a hundred years old and she's got a few stories to tell about the city. But that doesn't mean she'll give up her secrets easily and certainly not to the first white guy who asks.  Edengalssie weaves two tales separated by time but bound by place. Melissa Lucashenko takes us back to the beginnings of the occupied lands around Maiwar, which we now know as the Brisbane River. She reminds us that the land was not unoccupied and in fact these are the traditional lands of the Jagera and Turrball people.  Against the backdrop of struggle for dominance we meet Mulanyin and Nita. what follows is ostensibly a love story set to the rhythm of a land that is poised for violence.  Mulanyin is certain of his love for Nita but he is also eager to prove himself and unsure of the ways of the white people who are ignorant of the law and the land. Mulanyin and Nita will pursue their love but they must do so in a world that may not want them to succeed. All these stories are so much history to the residents of Granny Eddie's world but she knows the truth. That doesn't mean she's going to tell it straight. As Granny Eddie's tales of early Brisbane bring her fame and notoriety she watches her niece Winona and her Doctor Johnny play out their own courting rituals. Johnny's only recently discovered his own blak heritage and that won't fly for Winona. She's sick of people claiming heritage they haven't earned and isn't going to make it easy on him. Edenglassie is a thought provoking, disarming and at times hilarious novel. Through the contrasting narratives Lucashenko effectively overthrows simplistic views of early colonial interventions and reclaims the story on behalf of the people whose land was stolen. She gives us a time when perhaps history may have taken a different direction and allows us to understand the vicissitudes of time and power that shaped the world we live in today. Fast forward to 2024 and Lucashenkpo reminds of the very real and ongoing history those events have created. Through Granny Eddie and particularly in the sparring between Winona and Johnny we see the ongoing pain and struggle to reconcile the past with a present and a future that does not tell the truth. Edenglassie is a tremendous novel and one well worth the reading.

In this episode, I chat with Hanna Navara, regenerative Hemp farmer, activist and permaculture enthusiast. Hanna, with her partner Leon, runs Hemp Threads, a licensed industrial hemp company offering natural hemp based food products regeneratively farmed using sustainable principals in Kyogle, NSW. It was a Permaculture course held at Mullumbimby community gardens alongside a Diploma in Organic Farming that really sparked Hanna's interest in the plant world in a deeper way.  Hanna had been heavily involved in environmental activism and had a passion for growing food and plants and found she really wanted to positively contribute to the solution of a healthy future for the people and our planet. This passion to contribute, led her and her partner Leon towards an interest in growing hemp, which was inspired by the MardiGrass Festival in Nimbin, NSW. It was here, that she first got her hands on a jar of hemp seeds… In 2018, Hanna and her partner Leon, with their jar of hemp seeds, engaged in a share farming journey in Broadwater on the Richmond river. The land was sandy flat swampland- and with neither her or partner hailing from a farming background, there were lots of lessons learnt. Solum farm in the Clarence valley, a working Organic medicinal herb farm run by Cheryl and Mike Smith provided the next opportunity for Hanna and Leon.  Here they spent, nearly 3 years, learning alongside Cheryl and Mike and planting out 3 hemp crops on about an acre of land. Hanna speaks of the many lessons learnt during this time, from inviting herbal allies like Calendula, Tulsi and Mugwort into her days, to the importance of having robust systems in place for harvesting, drying and packaging plant material. Hanna and Leon now share farm in Kyogle, near the Border ranges where they have a little more space for their hemp and have this year planted out a 5 acre hemp crop.  During our chat, Hanna brings an interesting perspective to the concept of self care. Rather than focussing on the individual practices that nourish her, Hanna zooms out and looks at self care from a very broad level. She talks about bringing in the systems thinking from her permaculture training to help her mind map out all the areas of her life and the balance she'd like to achieve- a mix of practical, spiritual and body care.  Hanna was in the late stages of pregnancy when we chatted and was really enjoying leaning into herbal allies to support her- she speaks of her connection with blood building and nutritive Nettle, creating herbal elixirs and nourishing molasses based herbal syrups.   We also explore all of the wonderful ways Hemp can be used for self care, both nutritionally and topically- from delicious salad dressings to bliss balls and nourishing herbal balms and oils.  I think you'll really enjoy hearing Hanna's unique approach to self care, I certainly learnt a lot! It is Á Tea for Three this time with Susan Quirke and Ruairí McKiernan. This all started with previous podcast guest, Laura Murphy, poet and activist. She had introduced me to her dear Susan Quirke a few years back and online we chatted a little and more so when her plans to move over this side of the world were starting to unfold. It is a big move from Clare to this continent and when Susan and her husband Ruairí slowly made their way to Mullumbimby, I was honoured to welcome them to the area and share some cuppas. Do you get enough rest? Beyond sleep, our bodies require times of rest throughout the day. Whether it's a nap, restorative yoga practice or taking 5 minutes in your car before heading into the house to be with your family, humans need rest to thrive. In this insightful episode, Mark speaks with clinical psychologist Dr Lauren Tober about the importance of rest. The two explore why western culture doesn't prioritise rest and the detriment this can cause to our health and wellbeing. You'll walk away with many practical tips to embrace rest and find better balance in your life. Our favourite quotable moments: “There is this real emphasis on how much can we do [and] how much can we get done in the day. And when we pause and take a break, it's like wasted time. When we're not being productive, we're procrastinating. - Dr Lauren Tober (3:45) “For a lot of other people, it takes an illness or something quite drastic for us to really focus and change.” - Dr Lauren Tober (17:14) “If your body is whispering, then listen to the whisper.” - Dr Lauren Tober (20:04) Resources: Dr Lauren Tober's Website Online course for Relaxation and Meditation Instagram @drlaurentober About Lauren: Dr Lauren Tober is a Clinical Psychologist and Senior Yoga Teacher based in Mullumbimby, Australia. Meet Oliver Bora of Olivers Hen's. What a legend, I first met Oliver at the Mullumbimby farmers markets. After becoming a huge fan of his ethical and sustainable eggs i wanted to know his story and after a bit of googling i quickly learnt that he started his business in year 11 at 17 years old via crowdfunding. He started with 450 hens, a caravan and space at his school. Cut to today; he has over 2000 happy hens, 3 caravans and is based at The Farm in Byron Bay. Oliver is a very cool human, in this chat he breaks down the difference between free range, paister raised, and organic eggs, so next time you're out shopping you'll be able to support sustainable and ethical farming, after all we get to vote with our dollar. No, having to set up registration pages, landing pages, free offers, etc. This brings us nicely to the title, which is, “How to Get Clients by Sending this Email Every day”. Luke, our seven minutes starts now. Sir, question number one, who's your ideal client? Luke Charlton 01:11 Coaches earning under six fingers are who I work with. Tom Poland 01:15 Easy peasy! Thank you. Number two, what's the problem you solve for them? Luke Charlton 01:19 You said it a second ago. It's helping them get clients basically. Helping my clients specifically send an email every day without any complex kind of convoluted guru funnels. Tom Poland 01:27 Perfect! Thank you, sir. Question three, six and a half minutes left. We're going through these at a great rate of knots. What would you say would be the symptoms that people who need your service are experiencing in their business? It kind of gives them a heads up that they need to find out more about what you do. Luke Charlton 01:41 Yeah, that's a great question. So, they've spent a lot of time doing organic strategies like Facebook, going in Facebook groups, begging for referrals, going in LinkedIn groups, writing a lot of blogs and a lot of content type-driven strategies that don't really pay off, spending a lot on ads but no payoff, expensive click costs, expensive lead costs, expensive appointment costs, as related to the ad campaigns, a lack of campaign response, so putting offers out in your emails and people not booking appointments. Inconsistency is really a big thing, like inconsistent- people opting into the list, inconsistent appointments, like living that kind of up and down roller coaster, right? Where one month ago, you got clients in and everything's great in the next month. It's like that feast famine cycle, and I've been there and it is not a good place to be as a coach or service professional living that up and down roller coaster. So, it's really not consistent- yeah. Inconsistency, basically, with leads and clients. Low closing rates, again, on the phone and not being able to close the clients that they're speaking to. Getting a lot of “I can't afford it” excuses, or “Now's not the right time” excuses, or a lot of other objections on the calls and low prices, basically. So yeah, so a symptom is- it's really just kind of related to the next question as well, but- Tom Poland 01:41 Okay, well, let's move on to question four. Thanks for that! Five minutes left still. Question four is about the common mistakes people with those symptoms make and trying to alleviate themselves from those symptoms. So, what else are people doing that is actually a mistake? Luke Charlton 03:15 Yes. So, they tried to go broad with their market. they think that having a broader marketing message, it'll attract more clients. But the broad marketing message just makes your message really muddy and undefined. And I don't really attract- you attract a lot of low-quality leads if you do attract anyone. But most people with a broad message just don't attract anyone. And that's the responsiveness that I spoke about a few minutes ago, having a low response, inconsistent response type campaigns. If they're running ads, they stop running ads. They think, “Oh, it doesn't work for me.” So that's a common mistake. You know, focusing on giving the ad campaign running is the better option there, instead of just stopping altogether. They lower their prices as a mistake, right? To try and get more clients, they lower their prices. And that's the only way they can really seem to sign people up. It's a big mistake. And it is hard to make a business model work when you've got low prices, especially if you're paying for ads. They try a low-ticket business model, like a low-ticket membership site or selling a low-ticket book or a low-ticket tripwire funnel. They're transitioning to that because they think that selling a low ticket. It will make it easier. But again, it's generally their marketing message that's the problem and their sales process. They give away free coaching or, free sessions of their service in order to try and convince people to sign up. So, they devalue their service. They chase kind of bright shiny guru funnels, you know, tripwire funnels are- Tom Poland 04:38 Oh, you kind of blame that nothing's working, right? Luke Charlton 04:41 Yeah, exactly right. Ang again, everything that I'm saying here, I made all these mistakes. So, ignoring, like, the big mistake is they ignore the fundamentals and similar to the chasing the bright, shiny funnels. They think that the reason they're not getting clients is because they don't have the right upsell or the right order bump or this new sexy thing when they haven't been looked at the fundamentals because- the fundamentals aren't really sexy, right? They're not exciting. Tom Poland 05:06 They can hurt the brain too. So, thank you for that. Two and a half minutes left. Question five, let's give folks a top tip. It's some of them are a bit of a mess, by the sound of it, all those symptoms, those mistakes that we've all made. What's the top tip you could give people that's going to take them a step in the right direction? Luke Charlton 05:23 Yes, so everything starts with your market, right? If you want a campaign that responds in terms of people opting in to your list or jumping on your emails, it all starts with your market. They're the people that are paying you. They're the people that are opting into your list. So, you must get very clear on your market, very specific in terms of their demographics and their psychographics. Build a very clear picture, then you build the campaign around that. Another big tip is to have a strategy that you can implement consistently. So, I help coaches and what they lack is just a simple strategy. So, I always say, like, “Build your list with quality leads, and then email that list consistently with one email per day.” That's all you need to do. And if you can't get that running, then complicated guru funnels- you're not going to be able to get that right. Tom Poland 06:05 All right, thank you. So, start with a market, what their needs are, and develop a simple system that you can kind of rinse and repeat. So, it gives you a predictable result. Thank you for that! 90 seconds left, two questions to go. Question six is a valuable free resource. I think we've got a landing page we could suggest people go to that's going to help them even more. Luke Charlton 06:24 Yeah, just go to nine, so the number nine, so 9emailoffers.com. Go there. It's just a guide that will show you nine email offers that you can send out to your email list to help you get more appointments and get more clients. And then if you also opt-in, I'll give you another gift called “The One Sentence Offer”. So, showing you how to craft a very powerful, profitable offer. I'll give you that but just mention Tom's name, when you opt to just email me, and say, “Hey, I heard you on Tom's podcast” and I'll give you that free training. I'll give that training for free as well. Tom Poland 06:56 Very valuable! Thank you for that. So, folks, it's the number nine, 9emailoffers.com. Go get it. Luke, we've got 35 seconds left. What's the one question I should have asked you but didn't? Luke Charlton 07:06 I don't have time. But the one question is do you have an example of how your advice helped clients? I don't think we have time for that in 30 seconds. But you know, people opt into that free gift. I get a lot of examples in my email, so yeah. Tom Poland 07:20 That'll do the job well! Luke Charlton, thanks so much for your time. Luke Charlton 07:24 No worries. Tom Poland 07:26 Thanks for checking out our Marketing The Invisible podcast. We go back to our amazing story of Australians rallying together …when the authorities don't offer the support they should….and the struggle for residents of the north east of NSW devastated by floods.   Jack Bailey, a northern rivers local has been hiking in to some of the communities that have been cut off since last Monday; Sophie Marsh has also been volunteering in the clean-up and says it's heartening to see so many locals pitching in to help; and Harry Dudley who's been helping his neighbours around the Mullumbimby, South Golden, New Brighton areas.   This is an incredibly inspiring story.  While NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has conceded rescue efforts should have been more readily available….the locals are rolling up their sleeves to lend a hand. Hi out there to our listeners, its Annalee. It is Tuesday, 8th of March in 2022. We are bringing you a special bulletin on the catastrophic flooding in Northern NSW, Australia. In the early hours of Monday 27th February, a little over a week ago, heavy rains causing what was already severe flooding, took a fast turn and created what has been deemed by some scientists as a ‘rain bomb'. The scenes across Northern NSW have been nothing short of harrowing and the community response as a result a powerful reminder of immense good that is available within us all. I'm catching up with PBB's Oni Blecher who's on the ground in Mullumbimby, one of the region's badly hit towns. We address the current needs in the community, what our organisation is doing to support families and lessons for the wider community. Byron Bay based Soul singer Lisa Hunt has performed with Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, James Brown, Joe Cocker, Miles Davis, Macy Gray, Tina Turner, Bryan May, and the cranberries Dolores O'Riordan.Hunt achieved fame and relative success in Italy, where she has been credited as "one of the most incredible voices of the past years.”In Italy, she is said to have performed one of the most intense interpretations of John Lennons "Imagine".Lisa began singing in that great African American tradition, the gospel church, which laid the foundation of her soulful singing style. She went on to study voice at The City College of New York where she received a BFA in music. Her debut album was ' A Little Piece Of Magic' for Universal/Polydor. She has had songs on numerous compilations around the globe, both as singer and songwriter and has sold more than a million records. As the rivers rise in Qld and NSW with worst floods in 500 years in that region Lisa's hometown of Byron Bay has been swamped literally as mother earns deluge soaks the Northern Rivers region. All her equipment and possessions are in a shed bordering the great river which has swollen while she waits it out on the Gold Coast. Her concert in Twead Heads is likely cancelled band members stuck in Mullumbimby and all this after two years of Covid .. we get real about humility in the face of nature, meditation and the power of music.

The dire weather emergency drenching Australia's east coast is moving even further south as heavy rains and floods threaten NSW, as residents of Lismore are evacuated over fears it could be hit with the worst flooding in more than a century.Thousands of residents in the northeastern NSW city began evacuating on Monday morning as a number of severe weather and major flood warnings were put in place across the state. The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting flood levels to peak at 13.5 metres at the Wilsons River on Monday evening, with data showing the highest recorded flood was 12.4 metres in 1880. ⚠️ Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been updated. Severe thunderstorms with INTENSE RAINFALL and LIFE THREATENING FLOODING are continuing this morning about the Northern Rivers. Further details: https://t.co/Ss766eSCrL pic.twitter.com/6ys8LrUxog— Bureau of Meteorology, New South Wales (@BOM_NSW) February 27, 2022 BOM warns the river will definitely smash the March 1974 record of 12.15 metres, which is far above the March 2017 peak of 11.59 metres. The Lismore levee overtopped around 3am and exceeded 10.6 metres. The slow-moving coastal trough deepened and formed a low-pressure system off the NSW coast on Sunday night, producing even more heavy rainfall, BOM said.“There were areas of locally intense rainfall associated with embedded thunderstorms,” BOM said.“Dangerous and rapid river level rises are being observed along the tributaries upstream of Lismore.”Authorities are saying it is difficult to know just how much water is coming down the valley into the city. The city centre has been completely closed off to drivers and pedestrians, with police shutting it off as water levels continue to rise in the CBD.A desperate search was sparked late on Sunday for a man missing in floodwaters at Lismore but it was suspended due to the dangerous waters.Officers from Richmond Police District were near Brewster Street and Uralba Street in Lismore about 4pm Sunday when they heard a man call for help. They lost sight of the man and believe he may have gone down a drain, searching for him into the evening.NSW Police were due to resume the search at first light on Monday.NSW SES Chief Superintendent Steve Patterson said more rain was predicted for areas across the Northern Rivers and mid-north coast.“The predictions are that we will see about 150-250mm of rain within 24 hours across that widespread area,” he said.A number of evacuation orders are in place across NSW on Monday morning, including parts of Lismore, South Murwillumbah, Wiangaree, Tumbulgum, Condong, Mullumbimby, Coraki and Kyogle.Major Flood Warnings are also in place for the Tweed River, Clarence River, Brunswick River and Marshalls Creek.BOM is predicting major flooding for Murwillumbah and Tumbulgum, while the Clarence River at Grafton, Ulmarra and Maclean could reach levels similar to those seen in March last year.Meanwhile, Casino has been warned to prepare for the possibility of flooding and possibly evacuation.Conditions are worsening across the border in Queensland's southeast, with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk describing the carnage as “unpredictable as a cyclone”.- by Lauren Ferri, news.com.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to November beautiful people, this year has just flown by I can't believe we're already thinking about Christmas! Still on a total wedding high and getting used to the new name - we're actually in Byron Bay this week for our mini moon so it seemed the perfect week to release this episode with Mullumbimby girl, Renée Bargh. I was lucky enough to record this one in Renée's beautiful home in Venice Beach when I was in LA on the way to Necker Island a few weeks ago and she had literally just come out of the ocean, what an absolute goddess. Despite an incredibly successful career over in the US, she remains a down to earth, Aussie beach baby whose family and friends mean more to her than anything. Having always lived for the performing arts, presenting was not Renée's first or even second love. After studying at Brent Street, Renée first set her sights on a career in dancing but then got picked up by Sony as part of a girl band (very originally called Girlband). It was a happy accident that got her into presenting with National Bingo Night on Seven then Surfari on Channel 9, followed by Channel V which then led her to her current position in LA as host on Extra TV alongside co host Mario Lopez and this is her ninth year on the job. Holding her own in Hollywood on the most fancy of red carpets, Renée's charm and talents have won her TWO Emmy awards that you'll hear I made her whip out during our chat. She speaks candidly about making it, homesickness and finding balance and I hope you enjoy as much as I did. + Follow Renée at @reneebargh + More about our videographers, Moon and Back Co + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!
