A conversation with Heather Terry, CEO and founder of GoodSam, about how an exit from a chocolate company led to a female-led consumer goods company, how education of consumers is key, networks vs. chains, multi-crop buying, and much more.Every CEO and high-ranking manager working in food companies should be obligated to visit the farms and farmers they source from. So many decisions in the board rooms would be taken differently. With Heather we dig into a story of a company about how an exit in a chocolate company led to a female led consumer good company focussing on chocolate, coffee, nuts and dried fruits. Preferably sourced from the same farmers paying them 2 to 3 times as much, marketed and sold throughout the US in Whole Foods and online and only being 2 years old. How is that possible? and why according to Heather is this the only way forward?---------------------------------------------------Join our Gumroad community, discover the tiers and benefits on www.gumroad.com/investinginregenag. NSW Police are trialling technology allowing them to remotely access Triple Zero callers' phones so they can see what's happening on the ground in an emergency. The GoodSAM app enables police dispatchers to turn on a caller's camera and start livestreaming video, as well as pinpointing their location, direction of travel and speed. Privacy experts have said while the app looks to be an effective tool, there are significant concerns about transparency, accountability and openness, and the lack of a guarantee people's data will be secure. Some of the most effective workforce retention strategies aren't necessarily “rocket science,” says Aimee Middleton, vice president of operations for Good Samaritan Society, the nation's largest nonprofit nursing home provider. But they take an intentional approach and investment of time and resources to prove successful. Middleton was one of several providers who spoke with the National Investment Center's Bill Kauffman on the “State of the Nursing Home Industry” during an educational session at the American Health Care Association's 2023 Convention & Expo in Denver While the panel addressed such major topics as inflation, occupancy, reimbursement and managed care, Middleton remains hyper-focused on workforce and the way a lack of nursing staff threatens access in many of the rural communities that Good Sam serves. In this episode hosted by McKnight's Long-Term Care News Senior Editor Kimberly Marselas, Middleton highlights strategies, such as a new mentorship program, with which Good Sam has had recent success. The first 90 days are proving critical, from the frontlines to building leadership. “They have a really intentional effort on workforce,” she says. “And in both our rural and urban facilities, we've seen great success with it. And it's not like the ideas are rocket science, but it's just having that intentional effort on it and really walking alongside our leaders.” Hear how much the new Good Sam approach has improved retention and what other benefits are revealing themselves, as well as why Middleton says reimbursement will remain a critical concern as organizations like her keep the focus on staffing.

Maxine Bernstein has covered a lot of stories in her more than two decades with The Oregonian and now OregonLive. A recent Saturday run along the waterfront quickly gave way to a long day's work when she heard reports of a shooting at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center, not far away in Northwest Portland's Nob Hill District. In this episode of Beat Check with The Oregonian, Bernstein and Editor Therese Bottomly walk listeners through the chaotic day, which took Bernstein from Good Sam to the Stadium Fred Meyer to Gresham and then home, where she confronted an unusual ethical challenge. Bottomly recently wrote about challenges that day, July 22, in getting solid and accurate information from official sources to reassure the public, which had been told an assailant was on the loose and Good Sam under lockdown. The Portland Police Bureau gave detailed responses explaining their reasoning in releasing what information they did and describing what they must consider before letting information out to the public. Read the responses here. Bernstein, meantime, was able to confirm key details through the day to keep OregonLive readers informed hour by hour, along with breaking news reporter Austin De Dios, who was at the hospital much of the day. The Oregonian/OregonLive followed the day's news with a deeper story about the victim, Bobby Smallwood; concerns Legacy Health and other health care workers have about safety; and measures Legacy pledged to take to increase security at its hospitals. Bernstein describes two conversations she had with Smallwood's father. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
St John is encouraging people who can do CPR to download an app which could save hundreds of lives each year. The GoodSAM app alerts nearby people when someone's having a cardiac arrest, something which happens about 5 times per day in New Zealand. If someone with the app can help, it almost doubles the person's survival rate. At the moment half of the people signed up are ambulance officers, but if you can do CPR you can join too. Tony Smith is the Deputy Clinical Director of Hato Hone St John and joins us now. [embed] https://players.brightcove.net/6093072280001/default_default/index.html?videoId=6331096241112

With a career spanning decades and a multitude of incredible roles in beautiful shows, it's no wonder actor Wendy Crewson is one of Canada's brightest and most beloved stars. With credits like Air Force One, Good Sam, Pretty Hard Cases, she is also known as a staunch advocate for ACTRA and FilmOntario and for the role she's played in helping change the landscape of the industry. But, Wendy says she's learned the most important person to stand up for, ultimately, is herself. She tells Naomi and Amanda about how much she loves to celebrate her own accomplishments and those of her fellow actors (she still gets excited about award nominations), especially when it comes to the next generation. She also shares that even after all these years, nothing will ever beat the rush of going into an audition room. Pictures of the Old and the New are seriously everywhere in the bible. Who knew that the story of the Good Samaritan was one of them? There is so much to see in every detail of the scriptures, and we love to look for those extra details. Even a donkey! In this episode we look for the End and the Beginning in this well-known parable. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-3/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-3/support

If you pay attention to any of the financial or economic news today, you'll hear about recessions, instability of the economy, and how there's no money to spend or to invest. But our guest in this episode challenges many mainstream ideas. Joining us again is Heather K. Terry, the CEO and Co-Founder of GoodSam Foods, a sugar-free and equitable food company doing work directly with farmers all over the world, with the goal of making access to delicious, healthy, regenerative food products easier for everyone, and doing good along the way. Having had to raise capital back in 2008 and 2009, and again in the middle of the pandemic for GoodSam, Heather knows that it's possible to raise funds and find investors no matter what the state of the economy may be. “I would argue that anything in symbiosis with nature is going to have a more positive outcome.” - Heather K. Terry Along the way, Heather has learned a thing or two about the world of founders, investors, and starting businesses. Here are three topics she talks more about in this episode: The regenerative way of conducting your business What the world of sustainable investing looks like today How new investors can get started “Don't be worried that you don't know what you don't know. Don't be scared because otherwise, you might miss some really great opportunities.” - Heather K. Terry You'll also hear Heather challenge the idea of sustainability leading to lesser profit, and she encourages new investors to still invest despite the state of politics or economy, to go talk to people, and learn what you need to know. The revolution may not be televised, but if it's up to Heather Terry, it will be farmed. A veteran entrepreneur and business advisor, Terry is the founder of GoodSam Foods, a food brand focused on combating climate change through regenerative agriculture. Launched in 2020, GoodSam's central thesis is that by empowering small farms to adopt systems that improve soil health, increase biodiversity and sequester carbon, people and the planet will benefit for generations to come. GoodSam markets several product lines, including chocolate bars, candy coated nuts and baking mixes, all of which incorporate ingredients sourced from small farms that utilize regenerative growing methods. GoodSam products are currently available on Thrive Market, Amazon and the brand's website, and the company is planning for brick and mortar retail distribution in the fall 2022. As the brand scales, Terry is employing lessons learned from her first startup, organic chocolate brand NibMor. She's using the experience, along with several years as a mentor and consultant to early-stage food entrepreneurs, to accelerate growth while minimizing the mistakes. In an interview featured in this episode, Terry spoke about making the transition from an acting career in film and television to entrepreneurship, why acknowledging a lack of business acumen was important in NibMor's early years, and why a brand's “North Star '' should guide every decision. She also explained why adhering to GoodSam's mission is paramount to its operational strategy and how the company aligns with consumers and retailers that embrace its vision. Show notes: 0:42: Interview: Heather Terry, Founder & CEO, GoodSam Foods - Terry and Taste Radio editor Ray Latif recalled their short interview at NOSH Live Summer 2022 and why visiting New York City can be cumbersome. She also discussed the origins of NibMor and why having a co-founder and CFO were critical to the brand's development and why it's important for entrepreneurs to consider the potential size of their businesses. Later, she explained why she got back into the food industry as a founder, building a team of veteran executives, why GoodSam markets a variety of products despite being an early-stage company, and her perspective on a rising tide for brands focused on regenerative agriculture. Brands in this episode: NibMor, GoodSam Foods, Taza Chocolate, Nuttzo
