The science of genetics took a wrong turn in the early 20th century and it ran through Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island. Here overlooking a former whaling port, Dr. Charles Benedict Davenport created the Eugenics Record Office and served as director of the Carnegie Institution's Station for Experimental Evolution. From these posts he promoted and pushed the Eugenics Movement in the US and throughout the world. Historian and attorney Mark Torres has explored the far reaching and sinister influence of Davenport's activities in his new book Long Island and the Legacy of Eugenics: Station of Intolerance (Arcadia Press). It is not the story of a fringe movement but of “the rage of the age.” Eugenics, which sought to control the development of the human race through such means as selective breeding, segregation, and forced sterilizations, was touted by politicians, intellectuals, academics, and even Supreme Court justices. In his work, Torres traces a sinister strategy that included legislative control, the trappings of academic credentials, and partnerships with like-minded movements like the emerging Nazi Party in Germany. On today's interview you'll hear more about the people involved, the power they wielded, and their surprising, ultimate fate. Emerging from the depths of a world-wide pandemic... FoosTalk Live is the result of a marriage between Foosball Radio and InsideFoos. From the humble beginnings of the 1st episode on April 10th, 2020...to this, the 100th episode, we have learned lessons, good and bad, about how to make talking about the sport of Foosball entertaining. (mostly) Listen as we describe the evolution of a live broadcast/podcast. Jim Stevens and Tom Robinson ventured forward with the new concept. With each week and each new episode, FoosTalk Live took on a life of its own. Meanwhile, new talent like Clay Tumey, Mark Torres and Adam Gilson further enhanced the experience, bringing their own talents and passion into the mix. Suddenly we find FoosTalk Live has aired 100 episodes with no sign of stopping. Now, the pandemic is becoming an endemic and the sport of competitive foosball has taken on new energy. This team, with all the quirks, is ready to take on the daunting task of keeping tabs on all of what makes foosball great! Download and enjoy our proudest moment-the 100th episode celebration of FoosTalk Live!

Each week he lets the guests do the talking and episode 17, the season finale, is no exception. Foosball never sounded so honest with the season finale of Shootin' The Shot! Download and enjoy...and oh yeah, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Dad's Day was a special one for FoosTalk Live! Jim Stevens, who is a father of 2 and Mark Torres, a father of twins both share their innermost feelings about Father's Day. (and foosball, too.) Jim and Tom share the IPA of the week and toast the Honor Group of the Week-the Tennessee Foosball Group. Since this is the Father's Day edition our FoosTalk Live we return you to the 2021 Beach Town Beatdown as Tony and Bud Spredeman won the Open Doubles event over Blake Robertson and Tommy Adkisson. Meanwhile, one of the most famous foosball fathers, Tom Yore, Sr jumped in (for Mark Torres) to match wits with Jim on the Top 5 Best Father/Child teams. (The Yores might even make the list.) Tom Yore, Sr and his Tommy Yore, Jr joined us to chat about their unique foosball family relationship. You'll hear about the rise of Tommy's career and his most recent double dip win over Tony Spredeman. Happy Father's Day! Download this episode with dear old dad and enjoy FoosTalk Live!
What would you rather do? Spend the weekend with white sand, blue water, great food and a ton of foosball fun or host a podcast about foosball? Jim Stevens managed to do both! Doing his play-by-play at the Beach Town Beatdown in Lake Worth, Florida and appearing during this edition of FoosTalk Live. Jim joins Tom and special guest host Michael Stahl. (Playing the part of Mark Torres brilliantly.) We sample the IPA of the Week and toast the Honor Group of the Week-Tampa Bay Foosball Club. With the FoosTalk Live Flashback we feature an historic moment (3 hours old) from the Beach Town Beatdown and the Women's DYP finals. Joining us live from her South Carolina vacation, Lindsay Albert jumps into talk about her life as a professional player/promoter. The newest addition to Mark Torres's collection of novels, "Long Island Migrant Labor Camps: Dust for Blood," is a historic novel that exposes the shocking history of Long Island's migrant labor camps from their inception to their peak in 1960 and their steady decline in the following decades. Outlining the gruesome conditions that people lived and worked in, deceived with the promises of a better life, this novel is a must-read. To better understand the plight and truth of what went on in Long Island, before we knew it today, Mark A. Torres teaches the reader about U.S. Immigrant History, and as one five-star reviewer noted "provides insight to an almost forgotten struggle." Mark Torres is a husband, father, attorney, and internationally known author who delves into the suspenseful world of murder, mystery, and injustice. Mark uses his real experience as an attorney to help him create genuine stories that captivate readers through their thrilling and intricate details, and their complex characters that deal not only with murder and justice, but also with questions of love, self-reflection, and sacrifice. Jed, congratulations on launching Magic at BOOM! Studios last week. When approached to write this one, how did you begin to hone your story when you’re working off a universe that’s huge? There’s clearly a love for this universe on display here. Were you a fan of Magic the Gathering going into the project? Of course, there are cards you can purchase to understand the lore of Magic the Gathering, but are there any books you used as a resource when creating this world? Was there anything in Magic #1 that Ig Guara positively crushed and surprised you with?Black Cat #5 is out this week and kicked off a new story arc called The Gilded City. On today’s episode we will meet labor attorney, member of Teamster’s Local 810 in New York City and the author of 4 books, Mark Torres.Mark’s latest book, Long Island Migrant Labor Camps: Dust for Blood, chronicles the plight of thousands of Jamaican and Barbados migrant workers lured to the agricultural fields of New York State for decades with the promise of good wages and decent housing. Once there, they were preyed upon by corrupt camp operators who often cheated them out of pay and housed them in deadly slum like conditions. Dust for Blood, shines a harsh light onto what atrocities greed, a failure of government oversight, and the blatant disrespect for the working class can produce. Marks in-depth investigation into the sordid history of these camps begins in the 1940’s during the massive labor shortage created in America by the 2nd world war. It then follows the arc of human tragedy and suffering for those who worked in these dour camps, providing the food for our nation. The book focuses in on the peak years of the 50’s and 60’s and then tracks their steady decline in the decades that followed.Packed with personal accounts of the hardships faced by the un-represented, his book serves as a cautionary tale for those who feel the need for organized labor unions have passed.Dust for Blood is published by The History Press and is available in paperback now for purchase. Mark Torres has uncovered a little-discussed chapter of Long Island history, the conditions under which many migrant farm workers labored on area farms from World War II into the early 1970s. His new book from the History Press details the social, economic, and historical factors that led to Long Island's migrant labor camps being the focus of much attention in their day. These camps, created out of everything from old mansions to chicken coops, housed migrant workers from the Caribbean, Puerto Rico, and the South while operating under a system that often exploited and endangered the workers and their families. With a little less than a week from the 4th of July weekend, we got an early start with the 11th episode of FoosTalk Live! Jim and Tom welcomed Inside FoosTV color commentator Mark Torres. This week we introduced a brand new feature-The FoosTalk Live Top 5! Since it was the 1st edition, Jim and Mark shared their picks for the Top 5 Women Foosball Players and the Top 5 Smartest Players in foosball history. You'll have to download the episode to hear their choice for both. Listen in every week for another edition of The FoosTalk Live Top 5. FoosTalk Live will return next Sunday, July 5th at 9pm EDT. FoosTalk Live hit a milestone this week, in more ways than one. First, it was our 10th episode. Second, we celebrated Fathers Day with a toast to Dads who play, teach or just encourage foosball with their kids. Finally, we had an entertaining chat with a 2 time Gold Medal winning Team USA coach-Ezekiel Iceman Moore! Jim and Tom made the most of the time with Iceman and remembered the good times, but speculated about the future of World Cup play. Callers like Mark Torres and Liz Hill Moore truly rounded out this FoosTalk Live adventure. We hope you had a chance to listen live, but you can download it and enjoy! FoosTalk Live returns this coming Sunday at 9pm EDT with more engaging chat about Foosball!

Welcome to Episode 5 of Escape from Caloriegate! Today's our first episode that does not consist solely of me ranting into the microphone about how calories don't "count" in the way everyone thinks they do or speculating grandiosely on the nature of science or on the controversial ideas of iconoclasts like Gary Taubes and Steven Wolfram. No, today's show is less intense and more fun. That's thanks in part to my guest, Mark Torres, a good buddy of mine from Yale who works as an affiliate marketer in Colorado... and who recently lost 10+ pounds on a carbohydrate controlled diet. Back in college, Mark and I sang together in two a cappella groups, The Dukesmen of Yale and The Yale Whiffenpoofs. Those singing groups indelibly impacted our lives and allowed us to tour the world basically for free. A good deal! Beyond being able to belt out a kick-ass version of "On Broadway," Mark's a good man with a wide ranging intellect. He may not be a diet guru, but he's got great insights about the psychology of weight loss and also about the mess we collectively find ourselves in with respect to diet, nutrition and beyond. I'm not going to do the usual "break down every god-loving beat of the episode" thing, like I did with past episodes, since it's late, and I just want to publish this piece and go veg out on my couch playing Boggle for 1/2 an hour before bed. You'll just have to listen to the episode and be pleasantly surprised. Which you will be. So why are you continuing to read this? Go listen to the episode already! And please also visit Mark's awesome new blog, the Torres Touch, where he shares his diverse thoughts on business, health, politics, and etc.
