Both are pioneers in running history, having achieved firsts in races and track meets, including the Olympics, that had not been seen before. Johnson was the first Black American to compete in Olympic distance running and Rudolph was the first American woman to win three Gold Medals in one Olympic games. But they were both so much more. And that is what this week's episode is about. So, join me as I honor this two magnificent runners and heroes! Send us a Text Message.#293 - This week, I talk about my short but wonderful trip to Lake Tahoe and Echo Lake and how important it is to get away to the place where that recharges your batteries. The Sierra Nevada Mountains does that for me like no place else. I know there's a place that you like to go to when you feel the need to re-energize. No matter how brief, it is better to go for a short stay than no stay. I also talk about my terrific training run and I finally figured out why I fell on that fateful day last December. It was a big week of discoveries for me and I'm so grateful to be able to share it with you! Send us a Text Message.#292 - A lot of components go into successful running. One of the most important is proper breathing. It may seem such a simple thing; we breathe air in and out. But is it just that easy? As is usually the case, there are a few more important keys to understand to help you on your journey to being a better runner. I'm right there with you! As I talk about each subject, I'm learning with you. Efficient breathing is something that can always be practiced. Even the most experienced runners can still work on their breathing skills. I hope this episode helps you on your running adventures! It's the longest and the hardest of the three. This week, I talk about the trail, including the history, what makes it so tough, the few FKTs and why it is of interest to runners! We are so blessed to have these incredible trails and even if it's just for an afternoon hike, make a section of the CDT be on your bucket list! Also, don't miss my adventure at Mt Tamalpais this past weekend! It was quite an experience. And this time, it didn't involve the ER, thankfully! Send us a Text Message.#287 - With the creation of the Internationalist running shoe in 1980, Nike created a road running shoe that helped spark the tsunami of running that even today hasn't stopped. But by the mid-1980s, Nike realized that there was a lot more money to be made outside of running; lots and lots more money. They abandoned running for the greener pastures of trendy fashion. That was the corporation's first step away from running for Nike. Throughout the years, Nike has had several missteps, some perhaps not deliberate, but many, could have been handled in better, more appropriate ways. In this week's episode, I talk about Nike's downfall as it relates only to running. Of course, they have had other problems not-running related. I'll leave that for other shows. Much of the information I talk about comes from Kara Goucher's book "The Longest Race". There is a link on the show website if you would like to purchase a copy. I'm including training runs in this episode as well, as the preparation and recovery are usually the same things, aren't they? Many things we can prepare, other things we can purchase (who said running is a cheap sport???). Maybe you do some of these things already and others you hadn't thought about. But when we think back to mile races, we may think of Roger Bannister breaking the 4-minute mile for the first time and how incredible it must have been. Or, we think of how this distance evolved into the 1500-meter race we have today. Or maybe, you think of the Beer Mile races that are rising in popularity today. There's something about the Miler to me that conjures storytelling, history and the romanticism of running. That's what makes it such a magical distance. Martha Hughes is a sober woman, runner, fitness expert, and podcaster. She got sober not because of the bad experiences she had with alcohol (though she did have them), but because she was bored of doing the same things over and over again. One day she decided to take the leap and start attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and get an AA sponsor, and has since never looked back. Martha shares that getting sober did not solve all her problems, but it made her problems solvable. It was after she got sober that she really became serious about her running. She shares about her running podcast, Martha Runs the World, which covers all topics related to running and features many every-day runners as guests. Martha and I talk about the negative thinking patterns that can sometimes show up with our exercise routines in both active addiction as well as in recovery, and how to eliminate them. She also shares how having a perfectionist parent affected her self-image and self-love in a negative way. We discuss how to "deal with life on life's terms" and how to be responsive instead of reactive when life gets hard. We also discuss nutrition and weight management not only as sober women, but as middle-aged women in general. Martha also shares her upcoming long distance running plans, as well as gives great tips for those who want to start running. You can find Martha on her website marthrunstheworld.com. Like an old friend, through the ups and downs of life, running would always be there. There would be times when nothing would be as natural as clocking in 50+ miles a week and then there would be times when just getting in a run would be the most difficult thing imaginable, but running was never far away. Through a varied collection of careers such as music magazine publisher to advertising sales, running stood by like a best friend. It was such a strong force that Martha turned her tiny blog about it into a podcast, Martha Runs the World. For over two years, she's talked to runners all over the world. From slower to first place, young to old, runners have shared their stories with Martha and to the podcast's listeners. And to us runners, there's no better way to spend our time but to hear about other runners! During the day, she works hard at an urgent care clinic in San Francisco, but during her off time, she's either conquering the local hills or planning future episodes of MRTW! #17 - They say the 60s are the new 30s or the 70s are the new 40s or....I think what they're trying to say is that we all get older but that shouldn't stop us from doing what we love. If you're listening to Martha Runs the World, I'm guessing you love to run. There's no reason aside from major medical conditions, that anyone should stop running just because they're past 35. Sure, we may have to switch things up a bit or add a few extra steps into our workout routines, but we can do this! In this week's episode, I'm joined first by Tony Portera, co-host of the podcast Ultradiner, where with co-host Ruel Abadam, they talk about all things in ultra running. But Tony is more than that. He is Ultrarunner Extraordinaire and reminds us that we can keep going as long as our legs take us. Then I'm joined by Lara Zuehlke of the podcast Fit Over 40. Lara is a fitness and food expert and helps us understand ourselves and how we can improve our lives as we get older. They are both incredible people and their podcasts are terrific. I will have links to both of them in the show notes of my website www.martharunstheworld.com You can email me with comments or suggestions for future shows at martharunstheworld@gmx.com
Comments on Martha Runs the World Podcast? 888-563-3228 Description A podcast with an honest and open look at running, fitness and all things health-related with a bit of humor and saltiness thrown in. Website https://www.martharunstheworld.com/ Opinion For a sixth episode, this isn't bad. I felt the music was a little loud on your intro, but I was glad to hear a nice explanation of the podcast, and a nice tease on the guest. When you switched to talking about your guest your audio quality got slightly worse, but nothing too bad (but whatever did, don't do that). You also lost most of your energy when you switched to OBVIOUSLY reading. You also were talking about a race and in some cases described the race, but as I'm not familiar with the town or race, this didn't work for me. Tell me what is different about this race, but I don't need turn by turn directions. Those don't work on an audio podcast. If you're going to script your show the key is to write exactly like you talk and 100% ignore punctuation. Then when you read it, put a little more fluctuation in your voice. I know you are worried about sounding "fake" but go to "fake/radio voice" and then back it down a little. You naturally back it down a little so you will end up with more energy. #5 - Runners love running, it's our favorite thing. But most of us have to do more to keep our bodies strong enough to stay out on the road and trail injury-free. To help you accomplish this, MRTW gives some advice how to add strength training safely and easily. And you may find out you enjoy it! The website has a few examples of both body weight and weighted exercises runners can add as well as a couple resources for more information. As always, visit our website at www.martharunstheworld.com email us at: martharunstheworld@gmx.com and like our Facebook page under the name Martha Runs the World. Thank you!!!
#1 - The first episode in a new podcast that takes a new look at one of the world's most popular sports. MRTW is honest, direct and sometimes humorous but always passionate about running. I ask the simple or not so simple question: What is running?
