Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking with Daisy Torme and James Torme, the children of singer/musician Mel Torme actress Janette Scott. This episode was a true pleasure to record as not only were there terrific Mel & Janette stories but also some great stories about out host, Josh's dad as well. You see Mel and Martin Mills were buddies from as far back as the fifties who were runnin' young guns in the entertainment business in New York during the Eisenhower administration. They formed strong bonds in their youth and it extended into old age…with some more-than-occasional bouts of silence for some misperceived slight or two. In a sense, our conversation was a familial one as it felt like the next generation was reliving their parents together with stories about everything from photography to chocolate, from childish pranks to hanging with Buddy Rich and Sammy Davis Jr and much more. We talk “The Christmas Song”, Mountain Dew, Night Court & even a little known movie of Mel's “Challenge to Survive” with William Shatner. What began as a Twitter message to Daisy became a lunch, then another lunch and soon it became a full-blown Rarified Heir Podcast episode. So take a moment, set your internal clock back and let's take listen to Daisy and James Torme talk about their father, The Velvet Fog, Mel Torme. Lucky for you that this is only part one! Part two is next week! Everyone has a story.

Today on the 100th episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we talk to…wait a minute, we talk to Josh Mills? That's right, we've flipped the script! Because this is a milestone for us, having launched during Covid and posting a new episode for 100 weeks in a row, we decided to do something to celebrate. Something different. Our amazing and talented friend Daisy Torme took the time out of her busy schedule to guest host this 100th episode today and interview our regular host Josh Mills in a Freaky Friday moment no one saw coming. So Daisy is our host and Josh is our guest. Hmnnnn…. Daisy was the perfect person to take over the episode as they have had a familial connection that goes back decades. Josh's dad Marty Mills and Daisy's dad Mel Torme were friends from the early 50s in New York and while there were rough patches, Marty, Mel, Buddy Rich and Sammy Davis Jr. had a unique, irreverent, competitive, fraternal bond that we spoke about in episode 68. So Daisy was the perfect choice to do this because as the Buddy Rich & Mel Torme album title goes, we're Together Again for the First Time. We talk about Josh's years growing up the child of a celebrity with his mother, entertainer Edie Adams, professional photographer Martin Mills & running the estate of Edie's first husband Ernie Kovacs. Along the way, we touch on Mills Music, an iconic music publishing company run by Josh's grandfather Jack Mills, Mia Kovacs, Josh's sister, the mob, Edie's love of comedians & musicians, Marty's ship to shore mobile phone, Maury Wills, Italian food, Peter Sellers, Eddie Fisher, Edie's nightclub act and John Kenley, a name you will look up during the podcast, we are sure. But before we begin the episode, we have to thank our former producer/engineer Erik Paparazzi for his help in getting this off the ground in the early days and to Jason Klamm, who was the first one to sign on to the podcast as co-host back in 2020 when this wasn't even close to reality and to Jamie Harley (that's me) for all his help, patience and effort in making this podcast last 100 episode. His commitment to this podcast is unparalleled and quite literally, we never would have gotten to 100 episode without him. We also owe a huge thank you to Daisy for her time, effort, interest, kindness, research and help in making this 100th episode a reality. But most importantly, we want to thank you, the listeners, for commenting on social media, for emailing us ideas and suggestions and generally, letting us know that all this is worth it. Some new things are happening with the podcast – we've launched our Patreon page today so if you feel like what we are doing is worthy, let us know and feel free to send along a little something as a one-time pledge, a monthly pledge or just provide more an encouragement. While this podcast is a labor of love, we hope to make it even better over the next 100 episodes. And with that…we bring you Daisy and Josh, the podcast centennial

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to family. Our guests this week are Daisy Torme and James Torme, the children of legendary singer (and musician and songwriter and arranger and author et all) Mel Torme, aka The Velvet Fog.) This is a special episode because of how it began – with a message over Twitter that reconnected our host Josh Mills with Daisy and James after losing touch a long time ago. You see, Josh's dad, music publisher and later photographer Martin Mills was one quarter of a four-headed hydra of best friends that included Mel Torme, perhaps the greatest drummer of all-time, Buddy Rich and iconic entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. They were four friends who lived life in the fast lane after the end of WWII in New York and then in Los Angeles when each was breaking big in their field. In fact, you can read all about it in the Sammy Davis Jr. biography Yes I can. This is the first of a two part episode because frankly, we talked a lot. It had been a long time. We talked about Mel's roots on the South Side of Chicago, his love of movies, the story behind writing one of the biggest holiday tunes of all-time “The Christmas Song,” his Mountain Dew commercials in the 80s, how he missed out on a secret code name, a little-known TV movie produced by William Shatner called “Challenge to Survive” with Mel as a mountain man, Mel and the Mel-Tones and much more. It's a lot of silly, fun, outrageous talk on part one of our conversation with Daisy Torme and James Torme and it's all right here on the Rarified Heir Podcast.

How can University research contribute to radical changemaking in education? Listen in to this episode for an audience led discussion on how academic research can fuel the movement for liberated learning and social justice in education, with past and present academics and activists Max Hope, Martin Mills and Freya Aquarone. Max has a passion and energy for transforming the education system. The first fifteen years of her professional life were spent in the community and voluntary sector, largely working with socially excluded and disadvantaged young people who were disengaged from education. Her frustration and anger at the way that they had been failed by the system led her to becoming a university academic at the University of Hull, undertaking research about inclusive education, equalities, freedom, democracy and social justice. Her recent book, Reclaiming Freedom in Education (Routledge) was published in 2018. She is the Chair of Trustees at Phoenix Education and defines herself as an academic, a facilitator, an educator, a researcher, an activist, and a writer. Martin is a former high school teacher, and Professor and the Director of the Centre for Teachers and Teaching Research at the Institute of Education, UCL. He is committed to struggles seeking to create a socially just education system – and a more socially just world. Recent books include Re-engaging young people in education: learning from alternative schools (2014); Reimagining schooling for education (2017); Alternative education: International perspectives on policy and practice (2018); and Autonomy, accountability and social justice: stories of English schooling (2019). He grew up in England, but has spent most of his life living in Australia. they attended mainstream primary schools until the age of 10, and then spent two years at Summerhill (the radical democratic school in Suffolk founded by A.S. Neill) where they spent a lot of time climbing trees, being in plays, and doing algebra. Freya has worked in a number of educational contexts including a Pupil Referral Unit, democratic schools, and residential camps. They are currently doing an ESRC-funded PhD at King's College London which focuses on participatory democracy in schools and its significance for social justice, particularly for marginalised students. Freya also teaches on the BA Social Science programme at King's, which is run along quasi-democratic lines. Samira is a university student studying the BA Social Sciences programme at King's College London. Within the course she has been a facilitator for the Course Community Meetings (quasi-democratic meetings which students and staff use to discuss issues and make decisions about the programme). She has an interest towards inequalities within the education system and higher-education, particularly with reference to race and class. Samira has been working with Freya on a research project reviewing the Social Sciences programme at King's and how it is committed in trying to create social change and justice within the university landscape and beyond and the challenges faced when attempting to do so. Samira attended a comprehensive non-selective state school throughout her education, finding navigating her way through the education system to be difficult. She is therefore passionate about shifting the existing education paradigm. The discussion is hosted by Rowan Salim, programs lead at Phoenix Education, founder and facilitator at Free We Grow, and supporter of the ecoversities network, where learners and communities are reclaiming diverse knowledges, relationships and imaginations to design new approaches to higher education.

How To Fix The Music Business

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 24, 2016 37:44

These days, success in the music business is about survival. Major labels can lose millions and still stand because they’re owned by giant corporations. A couple of consecutive bad years for a major and there’s usually a purge, new management brought in, the roster overhauled, maybe they’re merged with another label. And a dreadful side effect of risk aversity that follows these changes is that the music that gets signed and released becomes progressively “safer”. It’s different for independent labels. Successful independents constantly reinvent themselves, and rarely play it safe with the artists they sign and music they release. The best indies are on point, way out in front of the majors, showing us where music is going. It’s inherently risky, especially when you’re paying the bills yourself. Which is why the accomplishents of Beggars Group are all the more stunning. Founded by Martin Mills as the Beggars Banquet label in 1977 during the height of punk rock, Beggars Group has deftly navigated 40 years of changes in musical tastes and technology. They haven’t just survived, they’ve thrived. Evolving into a label owner and distributor, Beggars Group handles Matador Records, XL Recordings, Rough Trade Records, Young Turks and 4AD. A cursory glance at the roster of acts they distribute is staggering. Jack White. Alabama Shakes. FKA Twigs. Radiohead. Warpaint. Grimes. The National. Adele. And over the past 40 years, they’ve been instrumental in bringing some of the most important alternative music ever created into the world by artists like Gary Numan, The Pixies, The Prodigy, Dead Can Dance, and Cocteau Twins. At the helm of Beggar’s digital business is our guest on the show for this episode, Simon Wheeler. As the largest independent music group of labels in Europe, Beggars Group can change the landscape of digital music with their strategic decisions; and Simon has helped crafted and execute these strategies at Beggars since 1997. He’s been inside the guts of every significant digital music opportunity the industry has faced since the beginning. And in this episode, we get deep inside the streaming music landscape, what it means for independent labels, and where Simon feels we’re heading after 20 years in digital music.
