So, following a particularly eventful year in the beer industry, I figured I was long overdue to invite him on for a chat.Coming up for you in this episode, Matt and I discuss the booming non-alcoholic beer segment – is it really booming? We cover the recent trend of breweries raising capital by way equity crowdfunding, with mixed results. And in fact, since we recorded this conversation, Gold Coast outfit Black Hops has completed their latest raise, which at $2.2 million is the largest ever campaign by an Australian brewery. Also on the agenda is the latest IP dispute between Australian breweries, and whether the legendary West Australian company, Feral Brewing, is damaged goods after being listed for sale by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners. And in a related discussion, we consider in retrospect the wisdom of Coke naming a craft beer brand after an obscure country town that no-one visits.Matt also fills us in on recent projects at Brews News, including its efforts to find out, how many breweries are there really in Australia?

Today they kick off an equity crowd funding campaign which will enable beer lovers to invest directly in the business. It's the first time this is happening in Australia but this type of capital raising is set to become increasingly popular among small brewers so Matt investigates what it all means and why Endeavour chose this path.  If you'd like to invest visit here. This week on Beer is a Conversation, Matt Kirkegaard catches up with Richard Watkins, co-founder and head brewer at Canberra's BentSpoke Brewing. Richard can fairly be described as a craft beer pioneer, having brewed at the the famed Wig & Pen brewery for 17 years before founding BentSpoke in 2013. Regular listeners will recall we had originally planned to speak with Richard during our live Hottest 100 Countdown in January, but when we were scheduled to chat Crankshaft, their flagship beer, had not yet appeared in the count and he didn't want to miss the potential announcement. Today, with the passage of a couple of months, we talk about the Hottest 100 and what having three top 30 beers means to a brewery such as his. We discuss beer freshness, his struggles with the word craft, the importance of the meaning of the word independence and much more. It's a wide ranging conversation and Richard is well known for his deliberative approach and also his willingness to speak his mind, all of which make for a fascinating discussion. Enjoy the conversation.

This week on Beer is a Conversation we have the last interview from our recent swing through Sydney' inner-west breweries and feature our conversation with Steve Drissell of Sydney's Staves Brewery. Hidden away in a back alley in Glebe, Staves is one of Sydney's more unique brewery venues, featuring English-style pub atmosphere and a live performance space that is well known on the city's music and comedy circuit.  Staves has continually impressed with its idiosyncratic line-up of beers, which are made on a tiny and somewhat makeshift brewery, showing stylistic influences from all over Europe and America. Matt Kirkegaard and James Atkinson visited the brewery late last year to catch up with Steve, who left his career in the corporate world to follow his dream of opening Staves. We hope you enjoy the conversation.

This week, and by popular demand, we catch up with John Preston from Melbourne's iconic homebrew store, Grain & Grape. John began brewing with his friend Laurie Cahir in 1987. They soon migrated to all-grain brewing and soon had plans of opening a brewery. Commonsense prevailed and they pooled funds to open Southern Home Brewing in Edithvale in August 1990, only the second Australian Home Brewing business specialising in all grain. Grain & Grape has supplied and nurtured an assortment of current professional brewers and John's history and  perspective is fascinating. This week we catch up with beer writer, brewer and now beer Forefather, Willie Simpson. Beer Forefather Willie Simpson[/caption] If you read about beer in the era before blogs, Willie was most likely the person whose words you read. Willie has been writing about beer since the late 80s and more recently been brewing it at his brewery, Seven Sheds, in Railton Tasmania. Willie joins us to talk about his recent collaboration with Stone & Wood for their Forefather series of beers, joining Phil Sexton in those ranks. Willie also gives us his thoughts on the current beer scene andall that went before. Willie's collaboration beer, inspired by Geoff Scharer's Burragorang Bock, is described as having a rich malt flavour that hints of chocolate and dark fruits, lagered for six weeks to make sure the finish is super smooth. In the pre-ramble, we discuss the Australian Craft Brewers Conference and the Craft Beer Awards, as well as Thunder Road's win in the Federal Court. In the post-ramble, Matt takes a potshot at Dan Murphys' / CUBs' hamfisted beer and food match ads that are less about actually trying to find a beer that matches a dish to elevate the enjoyment of both than shilling beers that go with everything only because they don't have enough flavour to clash with anything. In doing so, they manage to undermine efforts to actually educate about beer and food matching.
