Welcome back to SOA! This week, our first official guest from the Black Crowes universe, Mr. Matt Slocum, returns to the show to break down the classic track from Amorica, "Descending!" It's a great conversation you won't want to miss!
Chris Taylor is a lifer. His first bands, (Windows and Love Coma,) were covered by True Tunes when we were just getting started back in the early 90s. While his bandmate Matt Slocum went on to form the alternative pop group Sixpence None The Richer, Taylor continued to release projects as Love Coma and as a solo artist. He also became an accomplished painter along the way. Now, almost 35 years later, Taylor continues to break new artistic ground. His most recent Love Coma project (which included contributions by Slocum) was a stunner, and his brand new solo project - "I Carry The Flame" may be his best work yet. You may have heard Taylor when he appeared on our Bruce Cockburn episode, but this time it's all about him, his longevity, and how he keeps the flame burning after all these years. PLUS we spin the new EP "Rosemary Hill" by Sixpence None The Richer on the Jukebox! For more info visit the full show notes page at TrueTunes.com/TaylorFlame. The original Sixpence None the Richer lineup came together for the first time in over two decades to release a new EP, Rosemary Hill, and put on the band's first tour in over ten years. Leigh Nash and Matt Slocum joined Billboard's Behind the Setlist to talk about getting the band back together, recording Rosemary Hill, the ending popularity of the band's hit song "Kiss Me," the interpolation of "Kiss Me" in Lisa's "Moonlit Floor," the band's cover of The La's "There She Goes," the time Lee Mavers of The La's showed up to the band's concert in London in 2015, and much more. If you've ever directed even a single race, there's a good chance you would have received at least one email from a frustrated participant complaining about the distance they ran not matching your race advertised distance. They do have a GPS watch, you know. And although it's easy to jokingly dismiss these kinds of demands - most people do - there often is an uncomfortable point to the complaint: How do you know the actual distance of your race course, if it hasn't been accurately measured and certified? The answer, of course, is you can't really know. In fact, if empirical evidence from professional course measurers offer any kind of hint, it is that your actual course distance is likely much more off the distance you advertise than you think - most likely much shorter than the advertised distance. So what's involved in getting your race course professionally measured and certified? Why don't all the other methods we're all familiar with, like drawing lines on a map or using a measuring wheel, work as well? And, at the end of the day, do participants really care whether your course is actually 10K rather than 9.8?That's what we're discussing today with my guest, Matt Slocum of Precision Course Design. Matt, although a very accomplished runner, is a relative newcomer to the business of races, but what he lacks in industry mileage he more than makes up for in his dedication and obsession with the craft of course measurement. And with Matt's help we're going to be going behind the scenes of a race course measuring operation to look at how professional course measurement works, why most other DIY methods tend to underestimate the distance of a race course (often by a lot), and how investing a modest amount in professional course measurement can actually benefit your race for years to come.In this episode:Do your participants care about an accurately measured course? What types of races is course measurement relevant for?The process of professional course measurement: how it all worksWhy the course you've measured yourself on a map is probably shortDesigning a road course to match the race distance you aim for in your eventHow course certification worksThe cost of measuring and certifying your raceMaking small changes to a certified courseTo find a course measurer in your region, use the links below:USA: rrtc.netUK: coursemeasurement.org.ukCanada: athletics.caMany thanks to our podcast sponsors, RunSignup and Brooksee, for supporting our efforts to provide great, free content to the race director community:RunSignup are the leading all-in-one technology solution for endurance and fundraising events. Leigh Nash and Matt Slocum of Sixpence None the Richer join Caroline Hobby for this episode of Get Real. Leigh and Matt share about being ‘two kids from New Braunfels, Texas' that went on to find massive success with iconic hits like “Kiss Me” and “There She Goes.” Leigh, lead singer of the group, grew up wanting to be the next (fellow Texan) Tanya Tucker. Leigh and Matt described not being ‘cool' enough to break into the Austin music scene, but they were accepted in the Dallas scene. Matt would get out of college classes and drive himself and Leigh, who was still in high school, up to Dallas to perform and that's how they got their start. The two detail their love / hate relationship with “Kiss Me” which was a massive hit early in their career, prompted by tv/movie placements like “She's All That” and “Dawson's Creek.” They discuss getting a massive break with David Letterman having them on his show to perform and then pulling them in for an unplanned interview. Leigh and Matt share about the pressures of fame and success and going through a season of burn out and more. This week, David & Ian pay tribute to Eddie Harsch, keyboardist for The Black Crowes from 1991-2006. Joining the show this week to share their personal experiences with Eddie are Jeff Dunn, Charity Coe, Matt Slocum and Monalisa Young, with archival messages and stories from Chris & Rich Robinson. Matt Slocum is one of the great Jazz drummers in the US right now. His terrific new release, Sanctuary, highlights his abilities as a drummer and composer within this record's trio setting. On episode 070, Jamie catches up with Matt to discuss his beginnings as a drummer in Wisconsin, his move to Los Angeles to study at USC's Thornton School of Music, then his move to New York where he has been an in-demand drummer for the past several years. In this interview, Matt shares lots of great experiences, advice, and insight into his career and the new release. He is not only a wealth of musical and drumming knowledge, but he is an open book about the new release and his career. This is an episode of The Drum Shuffle that everyone will certainly want to hear.
The Magpie Salute is somewhat of a supergroup fronted by Rich Robinson once of the Black Crowes along with former Crowes Marc Ford and Sven Pipien, John Hogg who played in Robinson’s Brown Hookah and Matt Slocum and Joe Migestro who have played on several of Rich’s solo projects. The band’s birth came accidentally, after a show in Woodstock, and has grown organically since. It’s a great record with familiar sounds and some new ones. They’ve been touring consistently since 2016, playing all kinds of music on the road. Philippians 4:6-7 says, 'Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.’ (NLT) Today’s guest on Humans With Faith is my good friend, Matt Slocum. Matt is the Executive Pastor of Victory Life Church in Battle Creek, MI. There are times in life when we have to lean into what we believe more than ever. In this discussion, Matt shares the story of a season in his life where he had to do just that, lean into what he believed. Now, we all can learn from his experience. www.humanswithfaith.com @humanswithfaith

Whether he is solo, with an acoustic guitar and harmonica or with his band (Chris Taylor & The Setting Sons) you can expect a passionate musical experience. “Here's a guy with a voice reminiscent of Jeff Buckley, whose musical approach should appeal to you if you hate bubblegum and want something with more substance!” Mike Rimmer - CrossRhythms He has cowritten two songs with Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics fame and has over 30 musical projects to his credit. His album, Never Ending Now, released through Lo-Fidelity Records in 2016, is a double album featuring some of his best music to date. Throughout the 90’s, Taylor was the primary writer and visionary for the band Love Coma, which included Matt Slocum (guitar player for Sixpence None The Richer) and they developed quite a cult following across the US. With both his music and visual artwork, Taylor has remained prolific and prominent in releasing new work for his fans. Chris Taylor is a solo artist in every sense of the word.
