Rod Serling singing Christmas carols, garden variety anxiety, and the dog show opener for a Beastie Boys concert. Steve Okonski (Okonski, Durand Jones & The Indications, Aaron Frazer) OKONSKI Entrance Music [RELEASE DATE: 2/28/2025]- https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/okonski "After nearly two years, Okonski returns with Entrance Music — an album that finds the trio at the height of their improvisational prowess and celebrating the spontaneous and meditative. On the heels of 2023's debut Magnolia, pianist and leader Steve Okonski has reconvened long-time musical collaborators (Durand Jones and the Indications bandmate Aaron Frazer on drums and bassist Michael Isvara “Ish” Montgomery) for another session in the spirit of artists like the Bad Plus, Gerald Clayton, and The Breathing Effect. Ultimately Entrance Music serves as an invitation to early hours, where songs linger in the doorway, announcing their presence before returning to the air, in a meticulous drift into the next. Recorded over a five day session, Entrance Music was one of the first albums committed to tape at Portage Lounge, Terry Cole's studio in Loveland, OH. “It was a new setup, but with Terry behind the dials it was very familiar,” says Okonski. “I can't emphasize enough how much Terry feels like a fourth member [of the band] because of the space he's curating, the energy he is bringing, and the production ideas.” The energy and sound created with the Colemine label head at the helm makes for a listening experience equally at home with ECM or Stones Throw catalogs. From the rippling notes of the pastoral opener, “October,” Entrance Music is lush with anticipation, both band and listener feeling the tension in the tranquility — where the interplay of jazz improvisation and boom bap beats never shortchanges the musicianship but the talent is ever in service of the song. While the band does not play together as often as they would like, not much time is needed for the three to lock in. Montgomery's bass opening to “Passing Through” bends and moves with a singular meditative grace before piano and percussion joins the daylight filling a room with breath and light. If Magnolia resonated with last calls and late nights, Entrance Music counters with early mornings and first cups of coffee. Whereas much of the debut resonates with his time in New York, Entrance Music “feels a little less ‘on the streets at 2 A.M.' and a little more nature-based…a little more ethereal,” says Okonski. “It's definitely age, environment, and family — all of that does come through in the music.”" Excerpt from https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/okonski Okonski: Bandcamp: https://okonski.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @steve.okonski Website: https://linktr.ee/okonski Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections Merch: https://okonski.bandcamp.com/merch Durand Jones & The Indications: Bandcamp: https://durandjonesandtheindications.bandcamp Instagram: @durandjonesandtheindications Website: https://store.durandjonesandtheindications.com Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/durand Merch: https://store.durandjonesandtheindications.com Aaron Frazer Bandcamp: https://aaronfrazermusic.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @aaron_frazer Website: https://aaronfrazermusic.com Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/aaron Merch: https://shop.aaronfrazermusic.com The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

In the summer of 2023 saxophonist Wayne Escoffery found himself in Europe processing changes in his personal life while at the same time nursing a broken finger that prohibited him from playing his horn. He used this time of reflection to compose the music presented on his new record Alone on Smoke Sessions Records, which features pianist Gerald Clayton, bassist Ron Carter, and Carl Allen on drums. In this episode of LINER NOTES Wayne speaks of the challenge of creating something meaningful in a society that places a premium on the immediate.

Nicky Schrire is a multitalented and inventive British-South African vocalist and composer based in Toronto, Canada. Her work has seen her likened to vocalists Joni Mitchell, Norma Winstone, and Esperanza Spalding with The BostonGlobe's Jon Garelick noting that “though her approach has earned her comparisons to Gretchen Parlato and Becca Stevens, the similarities are superficial…she's got her own thing, and it's very much worth listening to.”A graduate of the South African College of Music and New York's Manhattan School of Music, she studied with Anthea Haupt, Peter Eldridge, Theo Bleckmann, and Dave Liebman. Schrire has performed in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, London, Dublin and South Africa, with musicians including Ben Wendel, Gerald Clayton, Fabian Almazan, Nir Felder, and Taylor Eigsti. She released three critically acclaimed jazz albums-2012's "Freedom Flight", 2013's "Space and Time", and the 2014 EP "To The Spring"-which earned her comparisons to songwriters like Joan Baez and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Her duo album “Space & Time” featured Grammy-nominated pianists Gerald Clayton, Gil Goldstein and Fabian Almazan. The Ottawa Citizen's Peter Hum described the recording as “fifty minutes of emotionally eventful, richly crafted music”.Support the show
We look at the music we love not only as source of sonic delight, but also as a metaphor of how societies could work, in harmony and respect regardless of place of origin and without boundaries, to create something higher than themselves. So this week we focus on music that may provide either hope or relief at a time when another war has erupted. Ok, it's not that hard to edit and put up one of these episodes, so why did this take so long? Well, life and how we do it is a little more confusing since Milo left the Minneapolis. But now he's in the BIG APPLE-ISS and THIS IS OUR FIRST LONG DISTANCE EPISODE! We talk about a new life in New York, which in Milo's case involves bumping into a jazz guitar legend, college, roommates, classes, pet turtles, A LOT of jazz vernacular and yes, missing home. Over the course of the pandemic, Gerald Clayton thought a lot about time. What it means, how we spend it, and how the past and the now influence the future in unexpected ways. His new album Bells On Sand is the result of this philosophizing and finds the acclaimed pianist and composer creating sublime new worlds out of simple melodies and space, and the resulting abstraction of time that both can provide. PLUS! Music we love from Father John Misty off of his latest LP Chloë and the Next 20th Century, and a new bluegrass classic of of Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway's Crooked Tree! Alto saxophonist Will Vinson hails from England but established a great many of his musical collaborations while living in New York City. These working relationships with musicians like Aaron Parks, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Ari Hoenig, to name a few, have resulted in Will's reputation as a saxophonist with incredible power and dramatic sensitivity, whose playing is characterised by his imposing sound and technique. Will's recording output has also been prolific. In fact, we met over Zoom (Will was in Australia but time-difference be damned!) to discuss TWO of his recent albums. Both released in 2020, there was “Four Forty One”, which features Will with five incredible pianists (Sullivan Fortner, Fred Hersch, Tigran Hamasyan, Gerald Clayton and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and “Trio Grande”, which features his trio with guitarist Gilad Hekselman and drummer Antonio Sanchez. Since our conversation, he has released a 2021 album, “Solo”, his third release for the London-based Whirlwind Recordings. While we didn't get to discuss “Solo”, there was ample musical ground to cover. Show Notes: Tracklisting: - Northbound (with Trio Grande) - Boogaloo (feat. Sullivan Fortner) - That Happened (feat.
