Welcome back for Episode 12! This week is a very exciting week for State of Amorica as we welcome keyboardist Matt Slocum for our first interview segment! Matt is well known in the Black Crowes universe as the man behind the keys for Rich's solo band and The Magpie Salute, but his resume includes a host of other artists as well. We chatted with him about the many aspects of his career and got a little insight into Magpie's forthcoming album, High Water II! You won't want to miss this one!

Hello Monsters! A brand new bonus episode for you between seasons as Matty scores an interview with John Hogg of the Magpie Salute. And a familiar Monsterland theme re-emerges as Matty delves once again into the connection between artists and the unknown.

We were very proud to be given the opportunity to interview Bill Nershi of String Cheese Incident, so even though Rob Turner was on assignment in New England, Seth Weiner was able to soldier on and do what is probably his best to-date solo interview (although we are all confused as to what "taking the realm" means). Bill and Seth wasted no time in comparing Fox's. They also spoke about how, like Railroad Earth's Tim Carbone, Bill is a Colorado transplant from New Jersey. Bill elaborates on this, the ever-growing "New Grass" (aka "Jam Grass") scene and how he went from being a fan of Del McCoury to becoming one of his peers. Nershi also speaks of how his days as an aspiring visual artist led to him creating the band's now-familiar "Pagan Swirl" artwork. He lets us into his thoughts about writing and performing with his wife Jill, Jim Lauderdale and Benny Burle Galloway and speaks of the importance of having a representative of the "lyric police" in the room. The joys of bringing forth new songs to the SCI repertoire, and dusting off old ones (SCI had just a short time before this interview performed the "40 Miles To Tulsa" chestnut for the first time in 20 or so years, and this performance is included at the end). Bill also throws some loved toward key people behind the scenes in the SCI family who plan and execute their most elaborate incidents, and gets a tad emotional when talking about his friend/neighbor Jeff Austin who had passed away shortly before this interview. Seth also speaks with Justin Levy of Conscious Alliance and they briefly discuss how his CA harnesses the energy and passion of the music world to feed hungry people of the wider world. Levy talks about how he found his way to serving others for a living, and gives examples of ways that Conscious Alliance encourages people to participate. Seth and Rob huddle in a corner of Eddie's Attic with Delvon Lamarr, Jimmy James and Keith Laudieri. These three gentlemen make up the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio. We learn many things including how these musicians' considerable talent and the savvy of Delvon's manager/wife Amy Novo were each able to help lead the band's first cd Close But No Cigar to debut at an impressive #1 on the Contemporary Jazz Album Charts. This turned the "Soul Jazz" trio into an internationally touring act, and they remain one to this day. Delvon, who is a master of the Hammond B3, explains why he decided to become a frontman, how his past as a drummer influences his approach to his organ work, who his primary influences are and about how important maintaining a sense of melody is to his playing. Jimmie James talks about how his blues past shapes his playing, and about how his and Delvon's wide musical palette combines with a mutually adventurous approach to produce wild improvisation with great regularity. These great musicians also talk about their enormous popularity in Europe, and the jazz audiences there. Laudieri is a Texas drummer who that night would perform publicly with the Lamarr Trio for the first time. From The Black Crowes to The Magpie Salute: The Art of Transcendence THE MAGPIE SALUTE is an exciting new band that features musicians who have played together for decades throughout various projects and share a musical bond. The band brings Rich Robinson, the guitarist and co-founding member of The Black Crowes, together with two key members of Crowes fame - guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Sven Pipien - alongside drummer Joe Magistro and guitarist Nico Bereciartua. The Magpie Salute also boasts a fine cast of vocalists, including lead singer John Hogg (Hookah Brown, Moke), former Crowes singer Charity White and background singers, Adrien Reju and Katrine Ottosen. Embraced by music fans as soon as show dates were announced in October 2016, the band instantly sold out its first performance scheduled for January 19, 2017 at the Gramercy Theatre in New York. Driven by popular demand, three more dates were scheduled, each of which sold out within minutes! Responding to fan interest, Rich notes, “it's been a better welcome than we could have hoped for. We are humbled by the outpouring of support. It feels powerful.” Marc Ford underscored Rich's comments, noting the fan's enthusiasm about The Magpie Salute. “The fans seems to be very excited. I'm just starting to see how much this music means to people”. Building on this excitement, The Magpie Salute, will look past these shows for a possibility of more touring. The Magpie Salute marks the reunion of the Robinson and Ford guitar team which ended back in 1997 when Ford left The Black Crowes. Reflecting on his past, Rich stated, “I feel Marc and I have a deep musical connection... As I get older, I realize what a gift it is to play with people with whom you share that language of music.” Reiterating Rich's point about musical rapport, Marc added, “it's one of those things that was there before we met. Musically, we were already family.” Asked about The Magpie Salute's artistic vision and musical approach, Rich stated, " I, and everyone involved, love playing music. Not only on our own, in The Crowes and in my band, but playing music in general. We want to make music again together with a fresh perspective. To present this music I wrote in a different light with these amazing players is going to be really special to me.” To create this new sound, Rich and his ensemble have called upon their collective influences, from R&B, country and spirituals, to artists such as Sly Stone, Neil Young, and The Small Faces - a vast musical landscape which, at its core, is pure Rock n Roll. “It's also deeper than that”, Rich goes on to say. “It's freedom, it's love, it's loss, it's pure joy. It's misery, it's simultaneously arrogance and vulnerability. It is life.” Rich explains how the band members' past experiences connect to the band's moniker, The Magpie Salute. The term references a British superstition about the imperative to salute a Magpie anytime you see one in order to ward off negativity, or to have a good day; it is like saying, I am unarmed or I come in peace. Rich says, “The magpie falls within the crow umbrella of species, figuratively and literally. Magpies can be black and white, which for me represents the dark and the light. "The way to salute a magpie, is to say Good Morning Captain. I felt this had too many coincidences to ignore. He adds, “This touches on many aspects of my life and experiences.” The band's genesis began in Woodstock, New York, at Applehead Studios where Rich had recorded his last three albums. Sven had been playing with him on his current tour and Rich thought it might be a bit of fun to invite Marc, as well as Eddie Harsch from the original Crowes lineup, to join. “It turned out to be a cool, cathartic and inspirational experience for all of us. Not afraid to get his hands dirty and dig into the work, Phil has created incredible imagery for the Jimi Hendrix estate, Doyle Bramhall II, Rich Robinson, The Magpie Salute, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Janis Joplin, Ten Ton Mojo, and many others. When he's not creating iconic images he can be found working as a roadie for his son's band, Gilbert.

It’s not uncommon for someone to start their career working at a place like SIR in New York City and end up on the road. That’s exactly what happened to Randy Brown. He met Roberta Flack while manning the stages at SIR, and the next thing he knew, he was traveling the country. Thousands of miles later, Randy is still hard at work, bringing his own special brand of enthusiasm and loyalty to the likes of Todd Rundgren, Moby, The Magpie Salute, and Meatloaf, just to name a few. Join me as Randy and I look back on a career spanning thirty-one years with no signs of slowing down any time soon.

I first met Joe Magistro and Katrine Ottosen in the Summer of 2014 while they were both on tour with Rich Robinson. The gig was in Patchogue, NY, and the trailer hauling all of their gear had broken down in New Jersey on the way to Long Island. It was hot, the band was late to the venue, and we all had to pitch in to help get them set-up in time for the show. It was awesome! Joe and Kat opened for Rich, playing music from Joe’s solo project, Prophet Omega, and I was an instant fan. A short while later, I discovered Kat’s solo work, CALLmeKAT, and I was equally hooked. Currently they are both on tour with The Magpie Salute, and took a quick break from playing to catch-up with me at their home in the Catskills.
