When director and actor Ian Michael first saw the stage play of Picnic at Hanging Rock, adapted by playwright Tom Wright, it was as a theatre attendant. Now, he is directing it at the Opera House for the Sydney Theatre Company. The Noongar theatre-maker has forged an exciting career performing deeply personal stories alongside innovative productions. His production of the gothic story of the Victorian school girls who go missing on St Valentine's Day, interrogates a colonial nightmare and its fixture in the Australian imagination. In 1954, model Shirley Beiger shot and killed her boyfriend outside the ritzy Chequers nightclub in Sydney. The case was a media sensation, especially when Beiger got off without any charges. It has inspired the cabaret A Model Murder staged inside the Darlinghurst Court House, where the original trial took place. Performers Amber McMahon and Maverick Newman give us a taste of the court action, along with writer Sheridan Harbridge. In the hit Edinburgh Fringe show, Feeling Afraid As If Something Terrible Is Going To Happen, Samuel Barnett is a stand-up comedian regaling us at breakneck speed about his unfulfilling love life and very hectic brain. When a new and dazzling man comes into his life, everything could change, except for his new partner's extremely inconvenient medical condition... but is everything as it seems? Sam and director Matthew Xia join Michael to unpack this charismatic character, written by Marcello Dos Santos.

Why are there areas of severe deprivation in prosperous countries, and how can prosperity be shared more equally? Those are the questions the world-renowned development economist Paul Collier explores in his book, Left Behind: A New Economics for Neglected Places. He looks at areas that were once thriving – from the mining towns of South Yorkshire to the bustling city ports in Colombia – to explore widening inequality, but also to offer ideas of economic renewal.Matthew Xia directs the UK premier of Skeleton Crew by Dominique Morriseau at the Donmar Warehouse (from 28th June to 24th August 2024). Set in Detroit in 2008, the play follows a tight-knit group of workers in one of the city's last surviving car factories as they struggle to come to terms with its inevitable closure. This is a story about the human cost of a global financial crisis and of enduring hope, against the odds.Joanna Kusiak calls herself a scholar-activist as she recounts the movement she was involved in that put people and community before speculative finance and profit. Her book, Radically Legal, is the story of how a group of ordinary Berliners used a forgotten clause in the German constitution to take back more than 240,000 apartments from corporate landlords. The book is based on Kusiak's winning entry to the Nine Dots Prize, which supports the development of book proposals, and was in response to the question set by the prize: ‘why has the rule of law become so fragile?' The Architect - a play marking the 30th anniversary of the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence - will take place on a double-decker bus travelling the route on which Stephen was attacked in 1993. Presenter Allan Little speaks to the director Matthew Xia and one of the playwrights, Bola Agbaje. Small independent publishers appear to be on a winning streak - last year several prestigious literary prizes were won by small presses, despite the inflationary pressures that have put some out of business. To discuss what's behind the rise - and fall - of small publishers, Allan is joined by Natania Jansz of Sort of Books, Valerie Brandes of Jacaranda Books, and Kevin Duffy of Bluemoose Books. Chilean film director Pablo Larrain has switched from biopics on Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana to create a world in which dictator General Pinochet is a vampire - he talks to Alan about his new film, El Conde. Schools are being closed because of the discovery in their buildings of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC), which can crumble and cause sudden collapse. It was used from the 1950s to the 1980s, not only in schools and hospitals, but also in theatres and venues. Already, two theatres and a concert hall have had to close. Arcadia, the new film from the BAFTA award-winning Scottish director Paul Wright (whose debut feature For Those in Peril premiered at Cannes in 2013), explores our complex connection to the land we live in. Combining over 100 film clips from the last 100 years and a grand, expressive new score by musicians Adrian Utley from Portishead and Will Gregory from Goldfrapp it is described as a "a folk horror wrapped in an archive film." Mufaro Makubika won the Alfred Fagon Award 2017 for Shebeen for best new work by a black British playwright. Set in 1958 in the writer's hometown of Nottingham, where many of those who had arrived on the Windrush had settled, Shebeen shines a light on a community under siege on the eve of the St Ann's race riots. Shebeen is directed by Matthew Xia and is currently on at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East. Christo and Jeanne-Claude are celebrated for their ambitious sculptural works that intervene in urban and natural landscapes around the world and temporarily alter both the physical form and visual appearances of sites. This summer the Serpentine Galleries presents a major exhibition of the artists' work, which draws upon their use of barrels to create artworks. Simultaneously, Christo presents The London Mastaba, his first outdoor, public work in the UK. The sculpture takes inspiration from mastabas - benches with two vertical sides, two slanted sides and a flat top - which originated with the first ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia. It will float on The Serpentine lake in Hyde Park from 18 June to 23 September. Measuring 20m in height by 30m and 40m, the sculpture consists of 7,506 horizontally stacked barrels, specifically fabricated and painted in shades of red, white, blue and mauve.
