On this weeks Episode I speak to a County Meath Man who has been living and working in New York for over 40 years. Pete O'Connell owns and runs numerous successful bars and restaurants in Manhattan and having moved here in 1977, has many years of experience navigating the New York City Hospitality industry.I feel it's so important to listen and learn from people like Pete because he has been Navigating New York for decades and has a very interesting and broad perspective on life here. Pete has not only survived for 40 years in New York but has thrived and learned and reinvented himself many times to keep his businesses relevant and successful.Of course, what we can also learn from Pete is the resilience it takes to make it here. Pete speaks really openly in our conversations about how the stumbling blocks become the stepping stones to achieving our goals in life. We have a candid conversation about the challenges of being a young immigrant working in the hospitality industry and how Pete himself got lost for a time on his journey due to alcohol. Pete is so honest and open about the challenges he faced with the lifestyle he lead in New York for many years, how he spent a bit of time in prison and how he ended up going home to Ireland to eventually sober up and has now not had a drink in 23 years. What I find particularly special about Pete is his willingness to help other people struggling, his gift is that through his own experience he can help others not feel so alone or ashamed of whatever it might be that they are struggling with. He has a wonderful way with words and a powerful message. We recorded in one of his establishments, the BlueBell Café on 22nd and 3rd Avenue and it was my first in-person podcast! However I think my microphone was off and there was a little too much background noise but I did my best with the edit and as Pete says, "we live and we learn"...Next door to the BlueBell is Molly's Shebeen which is a beautiful old style Irish Pub and Restaurant with delicious food. Pete, at the young age of 73 is always trying new things and has now starting a new Vegan venture with a business partner Michelle Morgan; Tiger Lilly - available for pick up and delivery atThetigerlillyktchen.com It was a real privilege to have Pete on the Podcast - I hope you enjoy!

Off we pop to the county home of the oldest brewery in Ireland up until recently, and we delve into the resurgence in shebeens around Ireland. (SIRI, what's a tenuous link?) Also, Andrea is obsessed with Kilkenny’s witchy history (festive), Una’s impression of Stephen Donnelly wins an Oscar, and Fine Gael are obsessed with themselves.

Award winning writer Irish writer Joseph O'Neill's 2008 novel Netherland was endorsed by American President, Barack Obama. Good Trouble is his first collection of short stories. Arcadia, the new film from the BAFTA award-winning Scottish director Paul Wright (whose debut feature For Those in Peril premiered at Cannes in 2013), explores our complex connection to the land we live in. Combining over 100 film clips from the last 100 years and a grand, expressive new score by musicians Adrian Utley from Portishead and Will Gregory from Goldfrapp it is described as a "a folk horror wrapped in an archive film." Mufaro Makubika won the Alfred Fagon Award 2017 for Shebeen for best new work by a black British playwright. Set in 1958 in the writer's hometown of Nottingham, where many of those who had arrived on the Windrush had settled, Shebeen shines a light on a community under siege on the eve of the St Ann's race riots. Shebeen is directed by Matthew Xia and is currently on at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East. Christo and Jeanne-Claude are celebrated for their ambitious sculptural works that intervene in urban and natural landscapes around the world and temporarily alter both the physical form and visual appearances of sites. This summer the Serpentine Galleries presents a major exhibition of the artists' work, which draws upon their use of barrels to create artworks. Simultaneously, Christo presents The London Mastaba, his first outdoor, public work in the UK. The sculpture takes inspiration from mastabas - benches with two vertical sides, two slanted sides and a flat top - which originated with the first ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia. It will float on The Serpentine lake in Hyde Park from 18 June to 23 September. Measuring 20m in height by 30m and 40m, the sculpture consists of 7,506 horizontally stacked barrels, specifically fabricated and painted in shades of red, white, blue and mauve. BBC 2's Japan's Secret Shame tells the moving story of 29 year-old Japanese journalist Shiori Ito, who in May 2017 shocked Japan when she went public with allegations that she was raped by a well-known TV journalist. Following Shiori over a year, the film portrays the consequences Shiori faced by speaking out in Japanese society.

The gang all went to check out Hugh Masekela on Friday. I have to confess i didn't know the first thing about him. But we've been having an amazing musical journey (with one missfire: DRUM!) and I was hoping for the best.Dani told me this was the music her mum would listen to when Dani was a kid, (which really raised the coolness level of Dani's mum to another level.)Hugh was born in South Africa in 1939. That makes him just shy of 70 yrs. But watching him on stage performing just confirms my belief that music keeps you younger. For the 2 hours that he played for us he was either blowing the trumpet, playing tamborine, scratcher or singing. My favorite song was Khawuleza. As Hugh tells it, in those days it was illegal for blacks to drink in South Africa and because of this, the shebeen was born. Shebeen is the name for illegal drinking houses. And whenever the police would raid the townships, little kids would run around yelling "Khawuleza mama" which means "hurry mum don't get caught".This other version is by Miriam Makeba recorded for Swedish TV in early 1966.
