Could a Department of Energy project known as the Battery 500 Consortium be working with Tesla to commercialize next generation lithium ion batteries? On May 19th, the Battery 500 Consortium released an update about its project, saying they've achieved an energy density of 350 Wh/kg., that can last for 350 charge cycles. This is a huge improvement from a couple years ago, and signals the technology is on the path towards commercialization. Shirley Meng is one of the leading researchers in the group, and has worked with Maxwell Technologies extensively in the past (before Tesla acquired them). Maxwell is also an electrode supplier for the Battery 500 Consortium's project. What do all these clues mean? Is this breakthrough in academia tied to what Tesla will announce at its upcoming battery investor day??

Green Connections Radio - Women Who Innovate With Purpose, & Career Issues, Including in Energy, Sustainability, Responsibil

“A 40 foot electric bus can save up to 100 metric tons of greenhouse gas per year, which is really what a traditional…bus would emit per year.” Margaret Lewis on Green Connections Radio   Transportation is one of the top three contributors to climate change, responsible for about 40% of the CO2 that goes into our air, according to some studies. Listen to Margaret Lewis, SVP of Manufacturing and Facilities at New Flyer, talk about how these new buses are integrating with our grid and reducing energy consumption and emissions dramatically in this engaging conversation with Green Connections Radio host Joan Michelson   You’ll hear: ·      How electric buses work, including how they charge on route. ·      What smart cities transit looks like for us passengers (4 pillars). ·      How they collaborate with utilities to improve the grid and as quickly as possible. ·      Suggestions on transit elements to look for in plans to improve the U.S. infrastructure. ·      Innovations coming down the road. ·      Career advice and, so much more! “The single biggest piece of advice I would give as I look back on my career is….to be willing to take jobs, and different activities and tasks, that nobody else wanted to do. And, by doing that, I found that a job or a position or a role that may not seem at the time like it’s enticing… actually…number 1, opened a lot of doors for me, and number 2, by doing those kinds of assignments that I otherwise might not have been comfortable with, I really learned a lot…There are a lot of really great things that can come from that and really properly you further in your career to where you want to go.” Margaret Lewis on Green Connections Radio You’ll also want to listen to: Karen Lightman, Executive Director of the Smart Cities Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, on how to improve the resilience of your community. Bonnie Datta, Siemens, on electric vehicle infrastructure and regulations. Anna Schneider, SVP of Industry and Government Affairs at Volkswagen of America. “It’s going to happen, It’s not so much a matter of ‘if’ it’s going to happen, but ‘when.’ But we need a strategic roadmap and a policy framework….EVs are one of the most complex systems, just because it cuts across multiple stakeholders.” Bonnie Datta on Green Connections Radio There's a lot of buzz around electric vehicles (EVs), but adoption is still slow. Why? Bonnie Datta, Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs and Market Development for the Americas and Southeast Asia at Siemens, told Green Connections Radio host Joan Michelson that much of the blame lies in the lap of regulators and utilities.  Listen to this fascinating interview for why and how your vote and voice matter.   You'll  hear:Why Minnesota is the model for EVs, surprisingly. Why regulators are the obstacle and how they can be more innovative. How automakers can transform how they market EVs.How everyone in the EV ecosystem has a role to play, including us drivers.And….great career tips from how she turned upheaval into success (Note: humility required.)  “There are transferable skills….Just because you have not spent 30 years in energy, does not make you less smart about it… You are learning every day, and every day you are bringing your own insights to say, ‘maybe you can do this thing slightly differently.’…Having a diversity of skills sets and ideas and creativity and experience from other areas, and passion…it makes such a difference.” Bonnie Datta on Green Connections Radio  You’ll also want to listen to: Anna Schneider, SVP of Industry and Government Affairs at Volkswagen of America.Mary Powell, CEO of Green Mountain Power utility and a major innovator in the sector.Kimberly McGrath, of Maxwell Technologies on innovative energy storage technologies.Betsy McCorkle, of North Carolina’s Sustainable Energy Assn. on the legislative side of EVs, clean energy.Lisa Laughner, CEO/Founder of Go Electric microgrids on how microgrids play a critical role daily. Show #473   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 16th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   HONDA E READY FOR ORDER IN EUROPE "Honda’s first fully electric series model for the European market – the Honda e – can be reserved here in Europe with immediate effect. The reservation fee, which guarantees interested parties a place on the waiting list to order the electricity, is 800 pounds in the UK." says Electrive today: "Customers who have reserved the Honda e will be invited to their nearest dealer after the official order start in order to place their order and conclude a purchase contract. As far as the official technical data of the Honda e is concerned, it is only known that the range will be over 200 kilometres according to the WLTP standard."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/05/16/honda-e-ready-for-order-in-europe/   TESLA’S ACQUISITION OF MAXWELL TECHNOLOGIES "Tesla today announced the completion of its acquisition of the battery and supercapacitor company Maxwell Technologies. This has been on the cards since early February and is in line with the recent timeline given in Tesla’s Q1 investor call. Maxwell’s battery dry electrode manufacturing process has already been piloted by Tesla, and will allow significant battery cost reductions and energy density improvements." writes Dr Max Holland for Cleantechnica: "Tesla’s current cell costs of around $100/kWh amount to approximately $3.5 billion in battery production costs per year (around 70 kWh per vehicle and 500,000 vehicles). Maxwell’s dry battery electrode manufacturing technology claims to allow a 10–20% cost reduction versus traditional wet-electrode manufacturing techniques."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/05/16/teslas-acquisition-of-maxwell-technologies-more-thoughts-information/   LILIUM REVEALS NEW AIR TAXI AS IT CELEBRATES MAIDEN FLIGHT Lilium, the Munich-based startup developing a revolutionary on- demand air taxi service, today revealed its new five-seater air taxi prototype for the first time. The unveiling of the new Lilium Jet came as the all-electric aircraft completed its maiden flight in the skies over Germany earlier this month. The full-scale, full-weight prototype is powered by 36 all-electric jet engines that allow it to take-off and land vertically, while achieving remarkably efficient horizontal, or cruise, flight. The simplicity of the aircraft design, with no tail, no rudder, no propellers, no gearbox and only one moving part in the engine not only contributes to the safety and affordability of the aircraft, but it has also allowed the design team to focus their efforts on creating a magical customer experience in the cabin, from panoramic windows to gull-wing doors. With a top speed of 300 km/h and a range of 300km, the Lilium Jet is capable of completing much longer journeys than the majority of its competitors. This is, in part, thanks to the fixed wing design of the aircraft. While drone-based aircraft consume much of their energy keep- ing an aircraft in the air, the Lilium Jet can rely on the lift generated by the fixed wing to do this, meaning it will require less than ten percent of its maximum 2000 horsepower during cruise flight. This efficiency, which is comparable to the energy usage of an electric car over the same distance, means the aircraft would not just be capable of connecting suburbs to city centers and airports to main train stations, but would also deliver affordable high-speed connections across entire regions.   VOLKSWAGEN SAYS EV BATTERIES TO LAST "THE LIFE OF THE CAR" "In an announcement last month, Volkswagen joined Nissan and Tesla as the only automakers to explicitly warranty not just the batteries in its cars but specifically how much life it expects them to retain. Frank Blome, the head of VW's Center of Excellence in Battery Cells, said in an outward facing internal marketing interview that the company expects the battery packs in its upcoming line of ID cars to last "the life of the cars," he said." for GreenCarReports: "Batteries for the Audi E-tron quattro, the first all-electric car from the Volkswagen Group's luxury division come from Korean supplier LG Chem. LG's South Korean rival, SK Innovation, which was just sued by LG Chem at the International Trade Commission, will supply batteries for VW's new products in Europe as well as the U.S. SKI is building new battery factories in Hungary and the U.S. state of Georgia to supply the batteries. In China, VW will rely on local batteries from CATL."   https://www2.greencarreports.com/news/1122910_volkswagen-says-ev-batteries-to-last-the-life-of-the-car   TESLA SUPERCHARGER V3 PRODUCTION UNDERWAY AT GIGAFACTORY 2 "Tesla diversifies its production at the Gigafactory 2 in Buffalo, NY, which now includes also new V3 Supercharger cabinets and other electrical components for Powerwall and Powerpack storage systems." according to InsideEVs: "According to media reports, Tesla decided to add new products at the Gigafactory 2, because the solar business "slumps" to a fraction of installed capacity. The Solar Roof ramp-up didn't reach volume scale and reportedly needs further development/tests, while low sales of standard solar panels forced Panasonic to sell "the great majority" of the solar cells to foreign buyers. Tesla is required to increase the number of employee to 1,460 by the end of April 2020 and it seems that the production of non-solar products is the only safe way to meet the requirements. Currently, the number of Tesla and Panasonic employees is 730 (329 Tesla and 401 Panasonic), above the required 500 by the end of April 2019."   https://insideevs.com/news/349938/tesla-supercharger-v3-production-gigafactory-2/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 5th February 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   VOLKSWAGEN'S ELECTRIFY AMERICA BUYS TESLA DEVICES FOR EV CHARGING STATIONS Reuters: "Volkswagen AG unit Electrify America said on Monday it will install Tesla Inc battery storage packs at more than 100 charging stations across the United States to keep costs down for drivers charging electric vehicles. Tesla Powerpack battery systems draw power from the grid during off-peak hours and store it for use during peak hours to avoid or reduce demand charges. Electrify America will install most of its battery packs in areas of the United States where there is a higher concentration of electric vehicle owners, particularly on the West Coast and the Northeast."   Bloomberg: "The 210-kilowatt battery systems will each have about 350 kilowatt-hours of capacity. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed and a Tesla spokesman declined to comment.   TechCrunch: "The company will begin the next phase of installations this summer. Electrify America’s bet on Tesla battery systems illustrates the deep need for electric vehicle charging infrastructure that is low cost, easy to access and as fast as possible. It’s not enough to simply dot highways and urban areas with public chargers. The deal also represents a small, yet possibly fruitful area for Tesla as it tries to grow its energy storage business."   Inverse: "Tesla develops the Powerpack for use with renewable energy sources like wind and solar, enabling buyers to store power and distribute when needed. The firm’s biggest installation to date is the 100-megawatt facility in Hornsdale, South Australia, used to help the renewables-dependent state avoid blackouts. Other consumers include the Manchester Science Park, using the batteries to create an “energy island,” and the Netherlands’ LomboXNet charging facility that uses solar energy to power electric cars."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-electrifyamerica-tesla/volkswagens-electrify-america-buys-tesla-devices-for-ev-charging-stations-idUSKCN1PT1NK   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-02-04/volkswagen-to-use-tesla-batteries-at-u-s-car-charging-stations   https://techcrunch.com/2019/02/04/vws-electrify-america-will-use-tesla-battery-packs-to-lower-charging-costs/   https://www.inverse.com/article/53004-volkswagen-s-electrify-america-to-install-hundreds-of-new-tesla-powerpacks   TESLA BUYING MAXWELL, COULD SIGNAL MOVE TO SOLID STATE BATTERY "Tesla is buying up Maxwell Technologies. In a deal expected to be finalized in the second quarter of 2019, the California automaker has offered $4.75 per share for the company. That’s a healthy 55-percent increase above the energy storage technology company’s share price of $3.07 at Friday’s market closing. The transaction is said to take the form of a stock swap and received unanimous approval from the Maxwell board." reports Domenick at InsideEVs: "Maxwell is mostly known for its ultracapacitors, which are used by other automakers. Indeed, Volvo’s Chinese parent company Geely partnered with the firm to use the energy storage devices in five of its hybrid products. But does that mean Tesla has picked them up for that particular technology? Maybe, but it should be noted that Maxwell, which has a footprint in Germany, South Korea, China, as well as the United States, has other tech that makes it valuable." Tesla told Electrek: "“We are always looking for potential acquisitions that make sense for the business and support Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.” Electrek said: "The automaker might be more interested with Maxwell’s dry electrode technology that they have been hyping recently. Maxwell claims that its electrode enables an energy density of over 300 Wh/kg in current demonstration cells and they see a path to over 500 Wh/kg."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-buys-maxwell-technologies-solid-state/   https://electrek.co/2019/02/04/tesla-acquires-ultracapacitor-battery-manufacturer/   PANASONIC CUTS PROFIT OUTLOOK ON SLOWING CHINA DEMAND; TESLA BUSINESS A BRIGHT SPOT "Japan’s Panasonic Corp cut its annual profit outlook after disappointing quarterly earnings it blamed on a slowing Chinese economy hit by a trade war with the United States that hurt demand for auto components and factory equipment." reports Reuters: "China’s shrinking car market has crimped demand for automotive components, Panasonic said, while sales have also dropped for electronic devices used in air conditioners. The energy division, which includes its battery business with U.S. electric car maker Tesla Inc, provided some good news in a bleak quarter, posting its first operating profit in three quarters."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-panasonic-results/panasonic-cuts-profit-outlook-on-slowing-china-demand-tesla-business-a-bright-spot-idUSKCN1PT0CZ   8% PLUG-IN ELECTRIC VEHICLE MARKET SHARE IN CHINA! From Jose Pontes at CleanTechnica "After a 3 month streak of record-breaking sales, plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in December just kept on pushing forward. China registered over 180,000 PEVs in December, making it the 4th record month in a row and achieving 70% year-over-year (YoY) growth. That meant that 2018 sales ended north of the 1 million units mark. Yes, over 1 million PEVs in one year. And to think that 2017 was the first year that plug-ins reached 1 million sales globally. The PEV market share hit yet another all-time best, ending the month with 8% share. The 2018 PEV market share ended at a record 4.2% share, double the share of 2017."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/03/8-plug-in-electric-vehicle-market-share-in-china/   2020 PEUGEOT 208 EV SPIED COLD-WEATHER TESTING "Following the reveal of the all-new Clio, Groupe PSA is feeling the pressure from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance for new, world-class products. The French part of the alliance won’t have it easy once Peugeot comes out with the all-new 208, which shares the CMP with the Opel Corsa." according to AutoEvolution: "Spied cold-weather testing in Scandinavia, the Peugeot looks similar to internal combustion-engined test mules. Styling is inspired from the 508, probably the coolest-looking sedan in the segment. The camera integrated into the rearview mirror enables Level 2 autonomous driving functions. By 2025, the French automaker plans to electrify 100 percent of its lineup, including Opel and Vauxhall."   https://www.autoevolution.com/news/2020-peugeot-208-ev-spied-cold-weather-testing-132148.html   MOBILE METERING: HONDA BUYS INTO UBITRICITY "Honda has acquired a significant stake in the Berlin-based company Ubitricity as part of a new financing round. The Japanese automobile manufacturer may have far-reaching plans with Ubitricity’s mobile metering technology." says an Electrive report: "electrive was able to glean the information about Honda’s participation in the Berlin-based company specializing in mobile electricity meters that for example turn street lamps into charging posts. Now a short announcement from deutsche-startups.de (based on the changes in the commercial register) confirms the Japanese manufacturer’s investment.Honda’s first fully electric model for the European market, the Urban EV, will probably go on sale in 2020. However, a near-series version will be on display at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and the production model will celebrate its premiere at the IAA in September."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/02/02/mobile-metering-honda-buys-into-ubitricity/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Dr Kimberly McGrath, senior director of business development for Maxwell Technologies spoke to us about the truly amazing abilities of her firm’s ultracapacitor devices, energy storage systems with very different properties from batteries, such as the ability to store and release a megawatt of power in a typical rack-space cabinet, so much less space than the shipping containers we write about for battery deployments. That said, these systems are not batteries and they have other properties that make them extremely useful in grid and microgrid deployments and she helped us understand the technology which is itself not brand new but is finding its way into many more deployments these days.

Green Connections Radio - Women Who Innovate With Purpose, & Career Issues, Including in Energy, Sustainability, Responsibil

“Energy storage enables us to have energy and power when and where we need it.” The linchpin in the new energy revolution is storage – to “enable us to have energy and power when and where we need it,” as Dr. McGrath put it.  It’s a time of rapid innovation in energy and storage, though, and the systems that rely on them, such as utilities and electric vehicles, as well as the electric grid. Listen to Green Connections Radio host Joan Michelson’s conversation with Dr. Kimberly McGrath of Maxwell Technologies take us from where storage is today to where it’s going, and how we’re going to get there, with what kinds of technologies.  Dr. McGrath has spent her entire 30-year career in the field of energy storage and is a master of it, and Joan helps us understand what these new innovations mean for our lives and businesses. You’ll learn about: How energy storage works. The new storage technologies that are promising to simplify our systems and reduce our vulnerability. How utilities need to adapt to the new energy and storage paradigms and technologies. How to power electric vehicles so you know which ones to buy for the long-term. The impact of Trump’s threats to cut clean energy government funding and his support of fossil fuels. How business leaders can make decisions about powering their plants and operations in this flux. Tips for making career decisions – “placing bets” and following the money, as well as ….. (listen and find out to her other valuable tips, for any age, career stage and occupation). You’ll understand where your electricity comes from, the importance of and innovations in storage – and what these mean for you, your business and your career – a lot better after listening to Joan and Dr. McGrath!
