This week, hosts Mike Nawrocki and Sarah Humphrey talk with Major Matt Satterlee of the Salvation Army, getting a behind the scenes look at this church and organization and also the distribution of the Ministry edition of The Bible for Me: Stories and Prayers. Major Matt Satterlee is currently serving as the National Youth Secretary for The Salvation Army. With responsibilities covering all of The Salvation Army's youth ministries from Hawaii to Maine, Major Satterlee is responsible for The Salvation Army's youth curriculum, summer camping ministry, and partnering with other churches and organizations that do youth ministry. Major Matt Satterlee has been a corps officer (pastor) in churches throughout Virginia, Georgia, and Florida. Major Matt Satterlee is the son of Salvation Army officers going back at least 4 generations. He was born in West Virginia and met the Lord at the age of 7 on an altar in the Frederick, Maryland corps. Moving around with his parents and growing in his faith for many years, he was accepted on a Salvationist Service Corps trip (mission trip) in the summer of 2002 to minister in Argentina and Paraguay. It was there, in the back hallway of the corps (church) in Asuncion, Paraguay, that the Lord called him to be a Salvation Army Officer. Major Matt Satterlee met his wife, Jamie, in Texas and were married in 2002. They entered The Salvation Army seminary in Atlanta, GA in 2004 as part of the Visionaries session and were ordained and commissioned to the Portsmouth, VA Corps as Corps Officers where their family grew with the addition of daughters Lillian and Susannah. Studies show that nearly half of all Christians say they accepted Christ before the age of 13. Major Matt Satterlee says, “If we are called to make others' salvation the first purpose of our lives, we should be exhausting ourselves in youth ministry.” Having come to National Headquarters following 7 years of ministry to youth and young adults, the Satterlees are passionate about the discipleship of young people.

After eight years as a comedy writer on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Bess Kalb recently wrote and produced a new comedy special that "eulogizes" the year 2020. Yearly Departed is available on Amazon Prime Video beginning 12/30. Bess comes on the podcast to talk about her own trials and tribulations over the past year, including a recent Covid-scare at the pediatrician, how she finds catharsis through laughter, and how that inspired her to bid adieu to 2020 with a rollicking roast-style memorial service. She reveals some of the big comedians she attracted to the special, some of the things they sarcastically eulogize, and how they managed orchestrate an entirely social distanced production. Bess shares stories from her years in the Kimmel writing room, including being the interviewer for Jimmy’s "Lie Witness News" segments and coming up with the classic "Baby Bachelor" sketch. Plus she talks about writing jokes for Hillary Clinton, working as an undercover speech-writer at the Democratic National Convention, and perhaps her proudest moment...getting blocked by Donald Trump on Twitter! Bess's special Yearly Departed is now available on Amazon Prime Video. I also highly recommend her book Nobody Will Tell You This But Me: A True (As Told to Me) Story. You can follow Bess at besskalb.com and on Twitter at @BessBell. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Her viral Harper's Bazaar article Women Aren't Nags - We're Just Fed Up sparked an international conversation about emotional labor inequality, and was shared and read by millions of readers. We discuss: - Woman's workload during the pandemic. - How we can build a culture of awareness, and bring men into the conversation, - and finally, why it is so important for us to abandon the need for perfectionism. Real Issues. Real Conversations. An Ohio Humanities Podcast.
Join a conversation between Ohio Humanities Executive Director Pat Williamsen and Ohio University professors Daniel Skinner and Berkeley Franz as they discuss their new book Not Far from Me: Stories of Opioids and Ohio.
We often hear stories about drug addiction and the opioid crisis from physicians, policy makers or people involved with the legal system. However, we rarely hear from people directly impacted by the epidemic. That’s not the case in the book “Not Far from Me: Stories of Opioids and Ohio” co-edited by Dr. Daniel Skinner and Dr. Berkeley Franz from the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio University. They collected some 50 personal stories from people living in 20 Ohio counties. The stories come from those directly affected by the drug and opioid epidemic. It showcases stories from drug abusers, their family members, member of the clergy, health professionals and policy makers. The stories range from personal narratives to poetry and even photographs. Although the book focuses on Ohio, the stories are reflective of personal experiences across the nation, Dr. Skinner says. He believes it is important to hear first-hand from those who are directly involved in the opioid epidemic because it gives different perspectives to the conversations about the drug crisis. The book is divided into five sections: establishing place, processing loss, making sense, devising solutions and challenging assumptions. In addition to the book, Dr. Skinner and Dr. Franz have conducted town-hall type meetings in communities around Ohio to hear directly from people about how opioid abuse has affected them and their towns. “Not Far From Me” is published by the Ohio State University Press. The website for the book and the community meetings is https://notfarfromme.org/
In this episode of The Matrix Podcast, students talk to researchers Berkeley Franz and Daniel Skinner about their new book: "Not Far from Me: Stories of Opioids and Ohio." The first-person stories collected in this book lead to a wider discussion of healthcare and insurance practices that hinder or help recovering addicts.
