It's Heart Month, so we went straight to the top and invited Dr. Stacy Rosen, Volunteer President of the American Heart Association, to help us answer one simple question: What actually keeps your heart healthy… and what's just noise? We talk about why 80% of heart attacks and strokes are preventable, what the AHA's Life's Essential 8 really looks like in real life (spoiler: you're still allowed to eat cookies), and why sleep, movement, and food matter way more than internet “biohacks.” We also break down cholesterol confusion, what LDL actually does, why statins aren't the villain they're made out to be, what LP(a) is, and why “just eat better” isn't always enough. Along the way, I get gently scolded for occasionally forgetting my statin. Fair. Then we dive into women's heart health, why medicine was built around male bodies, how heart disease shows up differently in women, and why pregnancy history, menopause, and hormones matter more than most people realize. And finally, we talk CPR and why bystanders save lives, why cardiac arrest so often happens at home, how kids are affected more than we think, and why learning CPR is one of the most powerful things a regular person can do. Takeaways: Most Heart Disease Is Preventable: Small, consistent habits beat extreme overhauls every time. Cholesterol Isn't Simple: LDL matters most, statins work, and LP(a) is the genetic risk more people should know about. Women Aren't Small Men: Heart disease presents differently, and women have been under-studied for decades. Sleep Is Not Optional: Chronic sleep deprivation quietly raises your risk for heart disease and stroke. CPR Saves Lives: Especially at home, where most cardiac arrests actually happen. Meghan's book is incredibly valuable, as it speaks to women of all ages, from young adults to those in later life. Think fertility only matters if you're trying to get pregnant? Think again. In this episode, Dr. Carolyn Moyers talks with Erica Bove, MD, OB/GYN and reproductive endocrinologist, about what fertility science reveals about perimenopause, premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), and long-term hormone health — even for women who are done having children. We cover:Why perimenopause symptoms start years before menopauseWhat POI and early menopause are often mistaken forWhat women who've gone through IVF or fertility medications should know in midlifeHow ovarian aging impacts sexual health, bone health, and overall wellbeingIf you're in your 40s or 50s and your body feels unfamiliar — this episode will help it make sense.
In this episode of Hot for Your Health, Dr. Vonda Wright is joined by Dr. Corinne Menn and Dr. Kudzai Dombo, board-certified physicians and menopause specialists in active clinical practice with Alloy Health. Together, they unpack what women are not being told about perimenopause and menopause—and why so many women are dismissed, misdiagnosed, or told to "wait it out" during one of the most biologically disruptive decades of their lives. Drs. Menn and Dombo explain the science behind hormonal fluctuations in perimenopause, clarifying why symptoms can be debilitating long before a woman officially reaches menopause. The conversation dives into precision medicine in hormone therapy, including when progesterone alone may be appropriate, how low-dose estrogen can act as a stabilizing "buffer," and why one-size-fits-all protocols fail women. The episode also addresses some of the most persistent myths in women's health—from fears around hormone therapy and breast cancer to misunderstandings about bone, brain, and cardiovascular protection. Dr. Wright and her guests emphasize the critical role of lifestyle factors like strength training, nutrition, and sleep, while making it clear that hormones are tools—not magic bullets—in a comprehensive longevity strategy. The discussion concludes with an inside look at how Alloy Health is expanding access to menopause care through asynchronous medicine, education, and community—offering women real-time support, evidence-based guidance, and the power to make informed choices about their health. In this episode, Jo Dunn, professional Doula, pulls back the curtain on the industrial maternity system and reveals what women are never told about their bodies, their power, and their births. Your thyroid isn't broken; it's responding. The question most women aren't getting answers to is: responding to what?In Episode 83, Monika sits down with Functional Nutrition Practitioner Divya Gupta, who specializes in helping women 30+ with Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism restore energy, reduce inflammation & feel like themselves again. Together, we uncover three massively overlooked thyroid connections that rarely get talked about in a doctor's office:
Why are women expected to feel tired, cranky, or just off for up to two weeks every month? It doesn't have to be this way — and knowing why is a game-changer.In this episode, evolutionary psychologist Dr. Sarah Hill breaks down the two major phases of the menstrual cycle and how wildly different our energy, sleep, cravings, and social needs can be between them. And here's the big takeaway: once women understand these shifts, small daily changes can massively improve mood, energy, and even support fertility. It's time to stop treating women's bodies like men's or flattening hormones with the pill. Instead, we should use the power of cyclical biology to our advantage. This emerging science is about to revolutionize women's health and the way we understand women altogether.Dr Hill's website: https://www.sarahehill.com/Join our new Patreon community! https://patreon.com/lilaroseshow - We'll have BTS footage, ad-free episodes, and early access to our upcoming guests.A big thanks to our partner, EWTN, the world's leading Catholic network! Most Modern Women Aren't Built For Relationships
Today's episode is one of the most eye-opening fertility conversations we've ever had — and honestly, it's the one we wish every woman could hear in her 20s. This is not fear-based, not medical-jargon-heavy, and not judgmental. It's a raw, honest, compassionate conversation about fertility preservation, egg freezing, AMH, ovarian reserve, and the real options women have — if they get the information early enough. We talk openly about what's happening biologically, socially, and clinically, and why so many women are blindsided by fertility challenges in their 30s… even the healthiest ones. You'll hear real patient stories (anonymized), real numbers, real frustrations, and real hope.Get ready for an incredible episode!
Strong opinions, stronger evidence. We take the much-quoted “women are not small men” and separate what's useful from what's been hijacked by marketing, then rebuild it with training principles that actually deliver results. With Dr. Alyssa Parten and Dr. Antonella Schwartz, we get honest about where women's physiology matters, where it doesn't.We dive into the truth behind “lift heavy.” Heavy is relative to your experience, and strength lives on a spectrum. You'll hear how to use RPE and reps in reserve to auto-regulate around stress and menstrual symptoms, why progressive overload outperforms rigid cycle-based templates, and how new lifters can thrive across broad rep ranges. We also call out the supplement aisle: creatine isn't gendered, protein targets matter more than gender, and micronutrient needs like iron, vitamin D, calcium, and folate should be guided by individual needs. For more information on our guests.Alyssa Parten PhD https://education.ua.edu/directory/alyssa-parten/ Antonella Schwarz PhD https://www.barry.edu/en/c-vitae/professors/antonella-v-schwarz

She's spent decades helping breast cancer survivors navigate the side effects no one prepares you for — from painful sex and vaginal dryness to surgical menopause, HRT questions, weight changes, and the emotional toll of treatment. We dive into: Vaginal estrogen after breast cancer — what's safe, what isn't, and what women aren't being told HRT and cancer risk — the nuance every survivor should understand Why so many women suffer in silence — and what your doctors may be overlooking The truth about surgical menopause, sexual health, mood changes, and long-term side effects What survivorship should look like when care centers the whole person Dr. Goldman's message is clear and empowering: You do not have to accept suffering as your new normal. There are solutions for nearly every side effect — you just need the right guidance. This conversation will leave you feeling informed, validated, and supported. She contrasts Islam's conquest ideology with Christianity's gospel of peace, urging bold resistance without fear. Allie also brings attention to the 10-year anniversary of the Bataclan Massacre in France. And amid darkness, Christian music surges, reshaping culture with musicians like Forrest Frank and Brandon Lake. We talk menopause & also discuss the article from the NY Times released on February 1, 2023 Women Have Been Misled About Menopause. The conversation around menopause is changing dramatically, but are women getting accurate information about what's actually happening in their bodies? Dr. Bruce Dorr, a board-certified OBGYN specializing in hormone optimization, joins Sandy to challenge widespread misconceptions and reveal what many women aren't being told about their changing hormones. This eye-opening discussion ventures far beyond hot flashes to explore how hormone imbalances affect virtually every bodily system. Dr. Dorr explains the shocking finding that joint pain—not hot flashes—tops the list of menopausal symptoms, and why so many women mistakenly attribute their discomfort to "just getting older." You'll discover the critical connection between hormone levels and brain health, including recent research linking hot flash severity to brain lesions similar to those found in Alzheimer's disease. The conversation tackles the infamous Women's Health Initiative study that scared millions away from hormone therapy, with Dr. Dorr clarifying why bioidentical hormones differ fundamentally from synthetic options. He offers a compelling analogy: "Not all estrogen is the same—it's like comparing ethanol to methanol. Both are alcohol, but one helps you feel good while the other can kill you." This distinction proves crucial for women weighing their treatment options. Most powerfully, Dr. Dorr addresses why standard medical care often fails menopausal women, with 60% of OBGYNs prescribing antidepressants rather than addressing hormonal root causes. He explains how pellet therapy works as an alternative delivery system and shares stories of patients whose lives were transformed once their hormones were properly balanced. If you're navigating perimenopause or menopause—or simply want to understand what lies ahead—this conversation provides essential information for making informed decisions about your health and vitality.Support the showPlease rate & review my podcast with a few kind words on Apple or Spotify. You're doing everything right. You're on hormones, you've cut the caffeine, maybe you've even bought one of those expensive sleep trackers. So why are you still waking up at 3am, wired and restless? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Andrea Matsumura—board-certified sleep physician and women's health specialist—to finally unpack why sleep is such a persistent struggle for women, especially during perimenopause and menopause. Andrea breaks down the biological, psychological, and cultural reasons why women are conditioned to expect poor sleep—and why it doesn't have to be that way.We talk melatonin myths (the dose matters), the silent epidemic of undiagnosed sleep apnea in women, and why most wearables are only telling part of the story. Andrea also explains why cannabis, supplements, and even hormone therapy may help—but won't fix the root cause for many women.Plus, we get into the real reason cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) actually works—if you're willing to do the work—and how the entire medical system is failing women by ignoring gender-specific data in sleep studies and diagnostics. If you're tired of being tired and want real, practical answers—not just another supplement or influencer sleep hack—this conversation is for you.HighlightsWhy hormone therapy helps some women sleep—but not all.How sleep apnea presents differently in women and often goes undiagnosed. The truth about melatonin: why most people take the wrong dose at the wrong time.Cannabis and sleep: what the research really shows. Why CBT-I is the gold standard for insomnia (and why apps alone aren't enough).Do you like what you heard? When I saw the news about the Supreme Court's ruling on the definition of ‘sex', I knew it was a topic I needed to understand better. As a straight cis man, it could be easy for me to ignore these news stories, but as a human, I know it's a topic I can't ignore.Bel Priestley is a trans actress, best known for her breakout role in Netflix's Heartstopper, but her journey to that point is a story filled with pain, bravery and incredible strength. I've known Bel a while, and having seen her tearful TikTok after the Supreme Court ruling, wanted to invite her into the studio to chat.At just 21, Bel has lived through extremes - from being bullied at school to rising as one of Gen Z's most influential LGBTQ+ voices. Through honesty and courage, she's turned her platform into a beacon for trans visibility. She opens up about what it means to be a trans woman in the UK today, especially in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling that's shaken her community, and what it's like to navigate love and hate when the odds feel relentlessly stacked against you.Bel shares, with heartbreaking honesty, the darkest chapters of her life: surviving sexual assault, enduring years of abuse and rejection, and the mental toll of fighting simply to exist. But she also shares what it means to find power through pain, how vital her chosen family has been, and why she's most worried not for herself, but for the next generation of trans youth.Through it all, Bel radiates warmth, humour and wisdom. This is a conversation about strength, identity, and the fundamental right to be who you are.You can also follow us on Instagram and Tiktok @greatcompanypodcast and if you've got thoughts, questions and comments, you can email us at greatcompany@jampotproductions.co.uk--THE CREDITSExec Producer: Jemima RathboneAssistant Producer: Gurlina HeerVideo: Jake Ji & Ryley KirbySocial Media: Laura CoughlanGreat Company is an original podcast from JamPot Hosted on Acast. This episode was originally published on May 5th, 2018. Remembering the grocery list, coordinating with the babysitter, making food for the potluck, scheduling a get-together with the in-laws: These are some of the invisible tasks that (most) women exclusively do in their romantic relationships — and the list goes on and on. Like a modern-day Greek chorus, women from across the country wrote in to the Dear Sugars inbox echoing identical inequalities in their relationships with their husbands and boyfriends. The Sugars commiserate with this aggrieved chorus along with Gemma Hartley, the writer who set off a national conversation about emotional labor with her viral article in Harper's Bazaar, “Women Aren't Nags — We're Just Fed Up.” Broaching the subject of emotional labor with a romantic partner can be tricky, especially if he feels as if he's being blamed for the imbalance of labor. The imbalance in Ms. Hartley's marriage began righting itself when she and her husband shifted their perspective: “This is not a problem with you and it's not a problem with me. It's a cultural problem. We have to unlearn a lot of things together in order to move forward." The Sugars Recommend “I Stand Here Ironing,” by Tillie Olsen “The Yellow Wallpaper,” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
