Welcome back to a brand new season of the Eccles Business Buzz! In Season 4, we explore the Eccles School Value of Confidence to Impact Your World. We'll hear from students, alums, and other friends of the David Eccles School of Business, all about the people and experiences that have impacted them, the ways they are impacting others, and what we can all do to build confidence in our own ability to make a difference.Today, we kick things off Jim Sorenson. Jim is a world renowned entrepreneur, business leader, and impact investor. He has built highly successful companies and industries ranging from technology and life sciences to real estate and private equity investment, and he is celebrated as a pioneer in the impact investing sector. In 2013, Jim provided the David Eccles School of Business with a $13 million endowment to create the Sorenson Impact Center, with the mission of cultivating impact investing expertise in students and building the social impact fields. And thats just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Jim's contributions to the Eccles community and beyond. Jim joins host Frances Johnson to talk about how his parents & family inspired his line of work and giving back, the intersection of business and social impact, how the Sorenson Impact Center & their experiential learning opportunities are helping the next generation of impact investors, and his latest endeavors with Catalyst Opportunity Funds and Enable Ventures.Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University fm.Episode Quotes:Student desire for social impact today[21:18] I think the students of this generation come much more aware of the human condition. I think they are more interested in utilizing their talents, abilities, and time to contribute to and address these things, particularly things of inequality or things that affect our planet and the risks that we face in the world today. On building his microfinance venture[13:07] I realized also that you really needed an ecosystem ultimately to be able to engage capital, educate investors, and create a marketplace, and there weren't intermediaries or places to go for this type of expertise. The key to advancement on impact investing[27:07] If you can engage the sectors of academia, government, nonprofits, foundations, and impact investors in a common effort, you can really move mountains in terms of advancing impact investing. On creating a sustainable and equitable[24:17] To be able to address these factors of zero poverty, no hunger, and equitable access to education. I'm really heartened that with the progress we're making in impact investing, if we continue on this trajectory and path, and it's a growth rate of about 40% a year, we're going to be able to make a meaningful dent and create a much more sustainable and equitable world that we live in.Show Links:Sorenson Impact CenterSorenson Impact AdvisoryImpact & Prosperity Epicenter at EcclesLassonde StudiosBob and Lynette Gay Health and Prosperity Center at EcclesSorenson CapitalCatalyst Opportunity FundsEnable VenturesMuhammad YunusPaul Farmer
Season Four of the Eccles Business Buzz podcast is almost here! And this season we are talking all about impact – the people and experiences that have impacted us, the impact our alums are having in their jobs and communities, and how programs here at the David Eccles School of Business are giving students and alums the confidence to know they can make a difference wherever they are. I'm your host, Frances Johnson. Join me to hear how new rules around Name, Image, and Likeness licensing for student athletes are making an impact on them–and helping them make an impact, too. We'll talk with Utah's only recipient of the Obama-Chesky Scholarship for Public Service about the people who impacted him and propelled him to such a great accomplishment, and we'll chat with a mother-daughter donor duo who are carrying on the impact of their loved one through a scholarship at the Eccles School. And we'll kick it all off with a conversation with Utah entrepreneur, philanthropist, and Eccles School supporter Jim Sorenson, the godfather of impact investing himself. The first episode of season four drops on March 30th, with new episodes coming every other Thursday. I know you won't want to miss a single one, so make sure to subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts and invite a friend or fellow alum to listen with you, too. We can't wait for you to join us again. Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University FM.

Why I don't like lots of POVs, even in fantasy where it's supposedly okay. A bit on how to choose POV, my feelings on the first 25% of a story (& POV), and then on grounding a reader in a sequel. Support the show (http://paypal.me/jeffekennedy)

October 1 is a bad luck day in my family, so I'm talking a bit about that. Also about meeting with writers Jim Sorenson and Sage Walker. (Her book is The Man in the Tree!) and getting little chores done like sending books off to the cover models that posed for them. Support the show (http://paypal.me/jeffekennedy)

Ep3/JIM SORENSON 68 minutes · Originally Aired Mar 7, 2012 Episode Info Ep3: JIM SORENSON "GI JOE FIELD MANUAL" For years the community has been craving a GI JOE art book… specifically, a card art or packaging art coffee table-style volume. On this episode, we talk not only to the man who is most likely to make it happen, but who is also very much up to the challenge. This man’s name is Jim Sorenson. Mr. Sorenson is an animation historian, archivist, restorer, and enthusiast. If the name doesn’t sound familiar to the GI JOE world, it’s because he’s spent most of his energy up to this point contributing to or writing books on, the animated world of Transformers: The Complete Ark -- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1600104886?ie=UTF8tag=thar-20linkCode=as2camp=1789creative=9325creativeASIN=1600104886 The AllSpark Almanac 1 -- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1600104878?ie=UTF8tag=thar-20linkCode=as2camp=1789creative=9325creativeASIN=1600104878 The AllSpark Almanac 2 -- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1600106838?ie=UTF8tag=thar-20linkCode=as2camp=1789creative=390957creativeASIN=1600106838 But now… NOW he’s set his sights on GI JOE with the “GI JOE FIELD MANUAL”… a book that compiles the production artwork for the Sunbow GI JOE animated series!!!! Coming out through IDW in the same vein as his previous Transformers Ark books listed above, the “GI JOE FIELD MANUAL” is a first-of-its-kind for GI JOE. And if it does well (read as: BUY THIS BOOK)… it doesn’t have to be the last! Not a fan of the Sunbow cartoon? That’s pretty inconsequential in regards to this book. The art and designs for Sunbow are just as responsible as anything else for shaping the GI JOE universe that we’ve come to know and love over the past 30 years, especially when stripped of its final, often campy, fully animated form. Not only that but there are things in this book alone which have never been brought to light before. Things like the image Mr. Sorenson shared with us for this episode (click the following link) which seems related to the origins of the creation for the character of Duke: http://www.joedeclassified.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=459&sid=5032f1ceab82742b39421f62e7363c65 Mr. Sorenson not only talks to us about his previous books and this current book he is working on... but he also takes us deep inside his process, from hunting down source material to what it.

It's been a month in the making! Thanks for the wait. We have one a heck of a show for this episode. In the first half, we actually have some VINTAGE discussion talking about our favorite figure and vehicle from 83 (and 82). We will do this every episode from here on out until we get to 94 and then we will figure something else out! HA! After our discussion, we jump to a pre-recorded interview with GI Joe Field Manual co-author Jim Sorenson. In the second half, Jay Hunger (from that hack geeky podcast) joins Gary as they talk to Billy Cooper of the Indy Toy and Comic Expo as WOJM will be recording live from their show in July! After the interview we dip into the mailbag to read a letter from one of our regular listeners detailing the similarities and differences of JoeCon v. BotCon. In the news we celebrate Jon Chu helming GI Joe 3, they review - once again - the SDCC Joe exclusives, they discuss the new Regular Joes Podcast and wrap it up with talk about the new wave of Retaliation Joes arriving. It's a pieced together episode that totals almost 3 hours of content...and a woman on it to boot. How could you NOT listen now, right? Oh, and don't forget to listen to our new spin off, The Full Force!
On the latest episode of the Seibertron.com Twincast/Podcast, we try to find the silver lining in the disappointment the fandom has encountered over the last few weeks. Kicking things off, we discuss the launch (and relaunch) of the TFCC Exclusive Over-Run and Shattered Glass Drift figures, as well as the problems the Club managed during the sale. We discuss the issue with preorders, offer suggestions for the future, and discuss the figures themselves. Next up, we lament the unexpected end of Transformers Prime: First Edition toys. We analyze the problems with store exclusives, discuss the costs involved, speculate on reasons, and get rather salty about the whole affair, including the shortage of Takara First Edition toys to compound fan desire. Moving on from First Edition to Robots in Disguise, we give our thoughts on the recently revealed Ratchet and Optimus Maximus, as well as some of the other, upcoming figures. We then jump to other side of the world, and review the just-released United Rodimus and give our thoughts on his over-the-top paint apps. We have some Micron talk up next for those collectors with a tiny figure predilection, with the recently announced Arms Micron line. Finally, we discuss a few pieces of excellent art floating around from the likes of Jim Sorenson and Guido Guidi showing us some new sides to the art we've come to know and love.
This week we take a break from the news and focus on something a little different. This week Dave and Chris are joined by TF author Jim Sorenson to talk about the draft script from the 1986 Transformers the Movie.
At AA 2010 Chris Mcfeely sits down with Jim and Bill authers of the Ark books and All Spark almanacs. Hope you enjoy.
This week we have many special treats as well as guests. First starting us off is Myself, Mike, Mike, and Matt Spada from the now defunct TFwire. And then we continue onto interviews with Stan Bush and Jim Sorenson. Check out their links for more information and listen to this awesome Botcon Pre-Show episode. For …
