This week the Regular Joe's cover the wrap up of two sci-fi series. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is the first child centric Disney+ offering from that universe. Lower Decks was the first animated Star Trek series since 1975, and was intended for adults. Specifically adults who are REALLY into Star Trek. Likely the only thing these two shows have in common is that they both exceeded expectations, and pushed the boundaries of what you can do within their respective universes. Note: there will be SPOILERS. And, because it's continually looping in Tod‘s head, they also talk about the just released trailer for the Disney+ continuation of the late, much lamented, Netflix Daredevil series, Daredevil Born Again … did we mention it's coming March 4th? There's also the usual Random Topics, and a round of What's in the Box. Thanks for listening!

Sometimes we bury the lede in the title so let's rectify that straightaway: featuring special guest Melinda Snodgrass! We've never been shy about our obligatory Star Trek references and as we've undertaken our long, strange trip through Asimov's Robot Novels and some related short stories, those references skewed sharply in the direction of The Measure of a Man, which is in my opinion "the moment when The Next Generation earned the right to call itself Star Trek." It's great TV and great SF and a monument to themes and ideas that Asimov championed throughout his career. So for this episode, we going to treat you to an episode-long Star Trek reference as we're joined by the author of The Measure of a Man, the aforementioned Melinda Snodgrass! Please excuse us, we're all a bit starstruck. In addition to writing the quintessential Data episode for TNG, Melinda Is a lifelong Science Fiction fan who has written many novels including the Circuit series, co-created the Wild Cards series of books, and has extensive screenwriting credits including L. A. Law, Sliders, and The Outer Limits. Within the realm of Star Trek, Melinda has written Tears of the Singers, a TOS novel, and five episodes of TNG, which also include a second Data-Centric episode, The Ensigns of Command. She was the Story Editor on Next Generation while the show transformed from a program struggling to find its voice into the science fiction juggernaut we all know and love. As Jon puts it, this episode “slaps!” You do not want to miss this one! Let's go!
God's Ensigns by Elisa Steeves - April 2, 2023
Season Three started with accidental Micro-bot evolution and ended with entity evolution before Picard evolved into a Borg! We had Ensigns and aqueducts, Hoosnocks and Dowds. There were Proto-Vulcans and firing lines -- remember Laura Palmer's Dad? Jeremy Aster's mom blew up -- remember how Diana almost predicted it? This was the season that Geordi re-invented Leigh Brahms in one episode then in the next, he fell down a hole and had to cohabitate with a Romulan in “The Enemy”! Season Three had a lot of hookups: Troi and Ral, Picard and Vash, Beverly getting cozy with that broody Ansata dude in “The High Ground”, And Riker's gal pal, Uta, who he later shoots while Picard looks on. We had Q's and Krags, Alternate Yars and Enterprises. Data took his daughter to work this season -- after he made her! There were Fathers, and Sins! Picard was trapped in an escape room before he went on holiday and wore a silver speedo! It was Tin Mans and Barklays, Data abduction, Sarek! Troi's were Menaged, green suits, and Borg! The return of the flipping Borg! All this and somehow more materialized in the last twenty six episodes of ST:TNGEEZ! Not Another S.T.P.C. Even more available at: https://tngeez.com
When Data receives a distress call from a planet on the verge of collapse, he needs to decide whether to ignore the distress call or violate the Prime Directive and send a reply. Data's decision not only shocks the crew, but leaves Captain Picard in the dark for weeks. Pulaski finally stands up for Data. And Wesley learns about the Ensigns of Command. Ruthie and Matthew talk about the implications of the Prime Directive, stories set in the Star Trek Universe that discuss the Prime Directive, and how the Prime Directive has had real-world influence on their own lives and decision making.

Somebody is always commanding when it comes to Starfleet, despite what the Great Bird thought, and of course it's Picard, no, wait – it's Number One! No, no, actually, it's Data! There's so much God-damned commanding! The Enterprise rolls up on a planet colonized by Earthies but wrongly so and their task is to remove these colonizers before the rightful heir of the planet (the Sheliak) show up to put down roots. For some reason Data alone is sent down to tell the inhabitants of Tao Signa Five that their asses are going to be rescued only to find that Signa Five inhabitants don't care about their asses that much. Meanwhile, up-top, Picard and company decide to head off the Sheliak and negotiate more time for evacuation. Picard has to Picard and God-bless-it he uses his councilor to council! Numbah One shouts orders at the robot they sent to negotiate the evac and Data has to posit-ronally figure out how to evacuate a planet of reluctant colonists all on his own – well, save for the help of his new flirty friend Marjory. Will Picard be able to stave off the impending doom of the colonists? Will Data be able to wake up after his ass gets zapped? Will Diana Troi finally get to shine? (Spoilers – this Empath shines!).

8MORALE in the new school sank daily. The continuing construction made things difficult for everyone. Whenever the site of construction shifted, groups of students would be shifted to clear the area. When the cafeteria floor was being laid, we had to eat lunch in the gym, and the gym classes were held in the corridors. Teachers taped paper over the glass in the classroom doors, but still the thunder of sneakers would distract us now and then. We were never quite sure from one day to another, and even during a single day, where we were supposed to go next. However, for the students the most unsettling part of all this was that since the school wasn't finished, the choosing of the winner of the name-the-school contest was continually postponed. Not only did we suffer the disappointment of not knowing who the winner was, but, worse still, since the deadline for submitting names was extended again and again, there was the need to come up with more and more names. Some boys and girls developed more or less constant headaches. I ran out of ideas. Over and over again, I tried scrambling the elements of the names that I had already submitted in the hope that I might come up with a winning combination. Like words repeated too often, my names began to sound meaningless and stupid to me, and I decided to ask that all my entries be withdrawn, so that I'd be spared the disappointment of losing or the embarrassment of having one of my ridiculous entries win. I went to see Mr. Simone one day during my lunch period and asked to have my entries back. “I'm going to pretend that I didn't hear what you said,” he said. “Why?” I asked. “Because nobody likes a quitter, my boy.” “Oh,” I said. “So you just get those ideas about withdrawing from the contest right out of your head.” “Yes, sir,” I said. He showed me to the door. “And as far as I'm concerned, none of this ever happened, okay?” He smiled quickly and held his hand out for me to shake. I shook it, with little enthusiasm, and left. Several innovations were introduced to raise the spirits of the students. Among these was the Young Tars. Membership in this group was limited to boys and girls who achieved certain academic standards, excelled in athletics, fawned over their teachers, or had influential and insistent parents. The Tars wore nifty sailor suits that caught the fancy of everyone in the school. Well, nearly everyone. The elitist selection process, which the faculty and administration had designed to make other students try their darnedest to earn admission to the Tars, created a large and angry group of students who hated the whole idea of the Young Tars and every now and then a couple of them leaped from behind a privet hedge and beat the bejesus out of a Tar who was on the way home. The duties of a Young Tar varied from rank to rank and from week to week. Among other things, we directed traffic at street corners near the school; kept boys and girls in line on their way to lunch or recess, when they left school, and while they waited for their buses; ran errands for teachers; clapped erasers; distributed announcements; carried messages; hung exhortatory posters in the halls; interpreted Mr. Simone's schedule changes for students who were baffled by them; and washed the car of Mr. Summers, the science teacher who was put in charge of the flotilla. Within the ranks of the Tars, the fawners usually held the higher positions (Commodores or Admirals), followed by the ones with influential parents (Captains or Lieutenants), those who did well at athletics (Ensigns or Petty Officers), and those who did well academically (Seamen, Baymen, and Swabbies). I would have been in the last group, but fortunately for me, when the first uniforms were being handed out, it was discovered that Mr. Summers had ordered one of the two Commodore outfits in my size, instead of a size that would fit Robby Haskins, who was to have been a Commodore. Since this fact wasn't discovered until all the Young Tars were backstage in the auditorium minutes before we were to be presented to the school as paragons, I became a Commodore by default.Have you missed an episode or two or several? You can begin reading at the beginning or you can catch up by visiting the archive or consulting the index to the Topical Guide. You can listen to the episodes on the Personal History podcast. You'll find out what "Ensigns of Command" means by the end of this podcast, we promise! Maybe? Data has got to convince humans to abandon their post or the tar monsters that killed Tasha might eradicate them all due to an old treaty. It's a real iconoBLAST on this week's episode as we dig deep into the... let's say complicated love life of everyone's favorite android! Minh wonders if Data's got groove, Jake can't figure out how he gets more action than Geordi, and we all speculate on what he tastes like. (Plastic? Metal? A warm summer day?)Meanwhile in Correction Corner, we dig deep into the troubled family life of Bing Crosby, explore tea culture in the UK, marvel at the friendship between Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen (they really like each other!) and, as always, we talk about Alf.
