A tradition unlike any other: it's the @QBKlass QB draft class special. We examine just how special Caleb Williams could be and whether we've failed to appreciate him lately. Also the age old question: what are the Commanders doing? And why are we overthinking Drake Maye? Should the Pats and Commanders even take quarterbacks? And did you know JJ McCarthy is likeable? Followed by a quick NBA playoff/play-in preview.

How a Tough Girl Meditates: Meredith Tapper on the Lessons She Never Expected to Learn from Boxing

This is My Silver Lining

Play Episode Play 48 sec Highlight Listen Later Oct 15, 2023 57:45

For Meredith Tapper, boxing is as much about patience and persistence as it is about landing the perfect punch.  Meredith is a 38-year-old lawyer from Winnipeg, Manitoba who works on Wall Street.  She's a big thinker driven by intellectual challenge who gets things done.  She is also a risk taker who won't hesitate to take a solo trip to Southeast Asia or some other far-flung destination.  In 2019, she embarked on a new adventure right at home in New York City when she started taking boxing classes.  She had a hard time fitting in at first.  She tried several gyms.  Coaches and other fighters asked her why she kept coming back - she didn't seem like the type.  Undeterred, she kept at it.  There was something about boxing.  She wanted to master it.  On November 2, 2023, Meredith will enter the ring officially at the Haymakers for Hope 11th Annual Hope NYC charity boxing event at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City.  Haymakers for Hope gives everyday people the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete in their first sanctioned boxing event. Over the years, Haymakers has raised over $25 million dollars for cancer related charities.  Meredith is raising funds and awareness for cancer patients who cannot afford treatment or the broader economic consequences that come with fighting a terminal illness.  We speak with Meredith about how she discovered her passion for boxing and what it continues to teach her about life outside the ring.  She dispels many of the myths that surround boxing, notably that it's all about violence.  To the contrary, Meredith says she is more centered, focused and patient with herself (and others) thanks to boxing.  For those who are truly committed to the sport and their community, there is love, kindness, and respect for others.Links and Resources:Meredith's Fundraising Page on Haymakers for HopeTo Buy at Ticket to Haymakers for Hope 11th Annual Hope NYC Boxing Event - Make sure to type “Tapper” as the unlock code.Haymakers for HopeSupport this podcast by subscribing and reviewing!Music is considered “royalty-free” and discovered on Audio Blocks.Technical Podcast Support by: Jon Keur at Wayfare Recording Co.© 2023 Silver Linings Media LLC. Point Man Book Study (2 of 4)   Guest: Gabe Boyd and Michael Thornberry   Point Man: How a Man Can Lead His Family (Revised & Updated Version) by Steve Farrar   Chapter 3 Real Men Don't Real men don't commit adultery.   “Affair” vs. “Adultery” An affair is “an escape from reality, or a search for meaning outside the marriage.” Usually happens in the life of a man who is either bored or frustrated with his marriage.   When you leave your wife to commit adultery with another woman, you take yourself with you. And you are your biggest problem.   1 Samuel 2:30 - “Those who honor Me, I will honor.”   The lure of adultery is that another woman will truly meet your needs.   Chapter 4 A One-Woman Kind of Man Commitment - Cortes - “burn the ships”...no turning back…   Guys, if we are going to save our boys, then we must save our marriages.   Be careful of adopting the thinking of today - don't I have a “right to be happy”?   1 Timothy 3:2 and Titus 1:6 - character qualifications for spiritual leaders in the church… Includes being a “man of one woman” - or a “one-woman kind of man”   A one-woman kind of man is a man who demonstrates his commitment by disciplining his eyes.   W.M. Taylor said, “Temptation rarely comes in working hours. It is in their leisure time that men are made or marred.”   Temptation itself is not sin but a call to battle…   Chapter 5 Anorexic Men and Their Bulimic Cousins “We owe the Scripture the same reverence which we owe to God.” John Calvin   Strategy #3 - To effectively sever and alienate a man from the spiritual disciplines that will keep him fit and effective for spiritual battle.   Problem 1 - men don't know the Word Problem 2 - men don't know how to apply the Word to their lives…   Howard Hendricks - “In the spiritual realm, the opposite of ignorance is not knowledge, but obedience.”   How to fight spiritual anorexia and bulimia - Psalm 1   “His delight is in the law of the Lord and in His law he MEDITATES day and night.” Spiritual Plan to Read the Bible: Plan a time Plan a place Make a list Begin with Scripture T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website. Well, the announcement and next stage of the podcast is here.  I'm just as shocked as you may be, but God has a way of continually surprising me.  This has been something I've felt Him nudging me to do for quite a while and, to be honest, didn't do it simply out of fear of looking silly.  Well, that's just not a good enough reason any more.  So, with that I present to you Spinning Plates Meditates, a spin off from Spinning Plates Podcast.  Meditation is something I've been able to use as a tool in my own life the past couple of years.  It's helped me calm anxiety, remain focused, feel connected to myself, be a better parent and wife, relief stress, and simply declutter my very busy brain.  It can, also, be overwhelming if you have a perception of it like I did for so long.  I was always afraid I was "doing it wrong" or "could never sit still that long".  Reality is, though, that you can't mess up meditation.  You can't even do it wrong.  It's creating a space for you throughout your day to just be and just breathe.  I want to show you how you can incorporate faith into meditation.  I want to lead you through some of the tools and exercises that I turn to when I'm feeling overwhelmed.  I want to help you find ways to feel connected safe that it's not weird.  I'm on the journey with you.  Look for episodes to be sprinkled throughout.  How often, yet to be determined.  But this is our start.  Ready or not, let's meditate. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

The 28-year-old artist reveals that she's in a place where she wants to be more vulnerable with her fans and allow to make music that shares more about her life and what goes on behind the scenes. Now, we all know Saweetie is a foodie queen and while she's gone viral for her interesting and tasty food habits, the recent McDonald's deal mogul shared with the morning show that she's somewhat on a health kick now, even though she still has her cheat days. Speaking of her recent Saweetie meal, the rapper reveals that the McDonald's collab was the proudest business venture she's had to date. Saweetie goes on to share her hopes to collab with Rihanna, the reason why she meditates, and much more. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Which is why it’s a great idea to rest them (especially in the evening) with a mindfulness practise like the one in this episode. Meet Maurice!  A young man with a lot of wisdom! At 21 years old, his poor health was inhibiting his life. His father (who happens to be a medical doctor) referred him to a functional medicine doctor at SouthWest Functional Medicine. They referred Maurice to the SHT to support their efforts, and the rest is STILL history in the making ;) Tune in to this episode to hear the interview and scroll down for some more info!  Since starting with the SHT in November of 2020 (just 8 months) Maurice has: Learned and implemented real food, sleep, and mindfulness. Hasn't had anxiety. Digestive issues are gone. Hunger is gone. Has lost 135 pounds, went from 440 to 305 and still losing. No longer insulin resistant. Enjoying food. Sleeping like a champ. Meditates daily. Happy and loving life like never before. In this interview, Maurice notes some awesome learning points: Health doesn't have to be stressful or restrictive. There are just some basic guidelines, a framework, that needs to be in place. Within this framework, there's a lot of flexibility to enjoy life. Flexibility is key. The routine can stay, but it can also shift! WHAT is in your routine is what's important. The when and how is secondary.  For example, meditation may be ideal at a certain time of day, but it's more important to meditate any time vs not meditating because you can't do it at the perfect time. The same goes with food and sleep guidelines. Health should enhance life, not make you so stressed that you can't enjoy life. Real food the right way is a way of life for a lifetime. It doesn't have to be restrictive, stressful, or temporary. Lastly, it what you're doing isn't working, if you still can't lose weight and keep it off, or have unresolved symptoms that you think should be getting better, you have to consider the possibility that some of what you think is healthy isn't. If you meditate (or do yoga, for that matter), you may have been taught by a Westerner, but you owe a gigantic debt of gratitude to the giants and geniuses in Asia who developed these practices. This fact can be overlooked or downplayed -- intentionally or otherwise -- by Western practitioners, including, sometimes, me. However, in the midst of a spike of anti-Asian violence, now seems like a very good time to learn more about where these practices came from, and why many Asian-American Buddhists sometimes feel erased. Not only is this the right thing to do, but it can also add depth and perspective and freshness to your practice. In this episode, we have two fascinating guests who will talk about what it's been like for them to be Asian American Buddhists in the midst of this spate of hate crimes, and walk us through the long and ugly history of anti-Buddhist violence in America. We also talk about: how all meditators (not just people in vulnerable communities) can learn resiliency through meditation; the connection between karma and reparations; and whether it's possible, or advisable, to generate goodwill towards people who hate you. We also have a frank conversation about how some of my own messaging about Buddhism in America has missed the mark.  My guests are: Chenxing Han, who is the author of Be the Refuge: Raising the Voices of Asian American Buddhists. She holds a BA from Stanford and an MA in Buddhist Studies from the Graduate Theological Union. And, Duncan Ryūken Williams, who is the author of American Sutra: A Story of Faith and Freedom in the Second World War. He has a B.A. in Religious Studies from Reed and a Ph.D. in Religion from Harvard. He is currently a professor at the University of Southern California. He's also a Zen priest. Both Duncan and Chenxing are helping to organize a national ceremony -- which will take place the day after we post this interview -- on the 49-day anniversary of the Atlanta spa shootings that took the lives of several Asians and Asian-Americans. (For more on that ceremony, click here: https://www.maywegather.org/) One thing to say before we dive in: we are dedicating this whole week to the spike in hate crimes against members of the AAPI community. On Wednesday, we'll talk to Mushim Ikeda, a Buddhist teacher, about how all of us can use meditation to deal with anger, uncertainty, and self-loathing.  And two more items of business: first, are you interested in teaching mindfulness to teens? Looking to carve your own path and share this practice in a way that feels real, authentic, and relevant in today's world? Rev. Dr. Timothy Saleska, professor of Exegetical Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO, joins host Rev. Brady Finnern to study Psalm 1. The Psalms are what God gives to us as we wait for Him.  In Psalm 1, the LORD shows us that we are blessed as He knows and has chosen us.  He compares the righteous to a tree by streams of water.  Our connection to the LORD is a delight because He bears the fruit of faith.  We pray that the LORD would keep us from all evil that we may meditate on His law both day and night.  “Lord God, thank you for choosing us to be blessed on account of Christ.  You have planted us like a tree to bear the fruit of faith and we ask that You would keep us in Your righteousness and bring the wicked back to You.  In Christ, Amen”

Kristen felt moved to share her birth story with BSIC as she felt it uniquely provided a space for women of color to be open and raw. Kristen became aware of her first pregnancy while traveling in Northern Africa. She managed to acquire prenatal care there, despite language barriers. Eventually, she transitioned back to the states still within the pregnancy and decided to hire a midwife for a home birth due to her late gestational age. Kristen's view of pregnancy as being an expansive experience helped her take on the challenges of pregnancy. She maintained her regular routine and interests, which helped her later invite her new baby into their family. When her Labor Day arrived, she found herself being called to task about her own beliefs in meditation and the power of the mind.  Her daughter's birth led her to start Blissful Birth Yoga, focusing her practice on prenatal support. She uses her personal experience and skills to support women and birthing people for the physical, mental, and emotional portions of labor. Kristen and her partner found themselves expecting another child and are preparing by letting the pregnancy flow, knowing that anything could change along the way.  We look forward to part two of Kristen's journey through motherhood after her son arrives. If you are looking to connect deeper or book a virtual meditation session with Kristen you can connect with her via Facebook, Instagram, or email her directly at yoginikristenvictoria@gmail.com.

It has to be sustainable. You could have a productivity system of working 72 hours straight at the beginning of the week and get everything done. Cool, you can do that but you're probably going to last two weeks, tops. This is a long marathon. I think the best way to conceptualize it is as a marathon of sprints. So you sprint—you work really hard on something—you stop, you rest, you reassess, you analyze, you improve, and then you sprint again. Fundamentally if that whole arc is not sustainable in the long run, you're just going to crash and burn. — Eric Brown, HEx Podcast #28 At HighExistence we've had many interns start working with us all excited and eager. Many told us they had been fans of the blog for years. They would work hard and do anything it takes. They would seize this opportunity with both hands. Then it came time to WORK. Crunch time. Effort. Dedication. Good communication. Innovative contributions. Self-discipline. Let me be clear, many of the interns who worked for us did a stellar job. I'm still friends with many to this day. But there has only ever been one intern who went from a small unpaid position to a fully fledged HighExistence team member who is not just useful to have on the team, but is indispensable. Meet Eric Brown: Director of Operations at Apotheosis Retreats, Leader of the Apotheosis Integration Experience, Manager of Social Media, Editor at HighExistence, and all around productivity ninja... Eric has an amazing ability to practice what he preaches. He's the guy that follows up on his recommendations. Works hard. Meditates. Reads. Organizes. And lives a "HighExistence." He is someone who is always striving to improve without any of that frantic, frustrated stress most of us have. To Eric, self-improvement is not about running away from a person he doesn't like, but about skipping toward a reality he prefers. What you're about to listen to is a 3-hour conversation between Eric and I, and as you might imagine, we cover a lot of topics! There is more that is real than what you can touch. When you touch money, you're touching cotton or paper. Money is an idea; a country is an idea; a government is an idea, so there are things that we consider real that we can't touch. Once I accepted that... that was a big catalyst. Because then you get into exploring emotion, exploring subtle energy in the body, and so on. — Eric Brown, HEx Podcast #28 WHAT WE DISCUSS IN THIS EPISODE: How does one balance spirituality with powerful work ethic? The systems-based productivity approach Eric learned from startup culture. Why everyone needs to start a blog, and how to do it. The fear we all have of putting our our creative work and what to do about it. How everyone wants to be successful but nobody wants to start at the beginning. The comfortable good is holding you back from the difficult great. The incredible but forgotten value of apprenticeship. Erics step-by-step approach that made him indispensable at HighExistence. How to design your own optimal productivity system. The way Eric prioritizes his tasks to get a lot done while remaining happy. How quick fix culture is preventing us from practicing deep spirituality. Mindfulness of the present moment is the foundation Eric's life. Jon and Eric make public productivity commitments. Eric explains how we can manage our time to get that mysterious "work/life balance." The value of psychedelics for both work and contentment. Analogue vs. digital productivity tools. Why no system will work without the right intention setting ritual. Eric's view on the pomodoro technique, with pro tips. Why we need to focus on THAT ONE THING each day, instead of multitasking. Jon and Eric's favorite mobile and desktop apps. How to get rid of bad habits and replace them with good routines that stick. How we run Apotheosis retreats and what they're all about. WAY MORE...

Burnout is a real thing for academics. I know you know this, but you might not know exactly what “pre-burnout” looks like, and what to do if you feel like you might be on the edge of a burnout. On this podcast episode, I’m sharing the stories of two times that I got very close to burning out, how I dealt with it, and what I’m doing to keep a comfortable pace right now. I’m sharing some red flags to help you recognize the signs of pre-burnout in yourself, as well as an exercise to help you control the pace of your academic life so academia feels good to you.  My stories My first burnout situation came when my infant son became extremely sick. About two weeks into the semester, after I went back to work from maternity leave, my 10-month-old son stopped breathing while I was nursing him to sleep one night.  This was the beginning of the 10 most horrible days of my life.  By late October I was so exhausted and strained that I could not continue. If I didn’t take action I would end up in the hospital myself. So I took sick leave. Right at the worst time of the semester. I remember sitting in the office of my young, single department head and feeling like he would never understand, or would push back. But he didn’t. I took the leave I needed to recover.  “I thought the world was going to collapse, but it absolutely did not.” -Cathy Mazak My second experience with pre-burnout came the traumatic academic year of Hurricane María. We were a country exhausted from hurricane recovery and a university trying to find our footing after blow after blow by the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico. We were collectively breaking down. But this time I recognized the signals and took action sooner. I heard the desperate voice in my head that said, “I just need to breathe. I can’t keep this up. If I could only rest …” This time, I intentionally listened to that voice and rested. On the weekends, I made myself lie down, I cleared our schedule, we ate more takeout, and the kids watched more Netflix. I whittled down my to-do list until it only contained the absolutely necessary items to finish the semester: grade the papers. Give the classes. That’s it. The difference between this almost-breakdown and the first one was that I knew that if I cut way back, everything would still be fine. The world would not end. And, I deeply understood that if I didn’t deliberately rest, I would collapse, and that wouldn’t serve anyone. Read about my son’s illness, the year after Hurricane Maria, and all the details in this article I wrote for Inside Higher Ed.  Recognizing Pre-Burnout Recognizing you are about to burnout means tuning in to what your body and mind are trying to tell you. Here are some red flags for me:   I was exhausted from the moment I woke up to the moment I went to bed. I had no energy. I was mentally foggy. I couldn’t bring up the words I wanted to use, and my memory was shaky. I was on the verge of tears constantly.   Recovering from Burnout (and Avoiding it in the Future) Recovering from burnout is not easy. It takes intentional effort to make the right choices for your health. Here are some ideas for recovering and avoiding the issue in the future.   Create room for deliberate rest. Nap when you can, go to bed early, do whatever you can to get more sleep.  Pare down your schedule to include only the absolute necessities.  Move your body. Find a way to incorporate gentle exercise. I joined a gym that provided childcare. Call in reinforcements. Ask for help! Draw on whatever resources you can. I called my mom to come help with the kids for a while. When summer rolls around, don’t try to “get ahead”. Plan it out to include rest and activities that rejuvenate you.  Do whatever is necessary to recover, including taking time off. Controlling the Pace-How do You Want Academia to Feel? If you’ve had an experience that stopped you in your tracks like a death in the family, illness, or other serious issue, you may have been forced to change the pace of your academic life. But you don’t need to wait for something to blow up to decide you need a change.    How do you want to feel in your academic life? Remember that the feeling comes first, not after something you’ve set up as an arbitrary sign post. Here is an exercise you can do to prioritize your own goals for how you want academia to feel for you.   Choose one word for the way you want to feel in your academic life and write it down.. (For example: Calm)   Now list 10 things that a person who that adjective describes might do.  For our example of “calm”, you might write:   Eats breakfast sitting at the table Takes a walk every day  Is content with accomplishing three things Makes a plan and sticks to it Starts work at 9:00 and stops work at 5:00 Gets 7-8 hours of sleep Asks for help before a situation gets out of control Shakes off guilt about undone projects Concentrates on restorative activities on the weekends  Meditates using the Calm app in the middle of the work day   The problem is that you are saying when X happens, THEN I’ll feel Y. But you need to start feeling Y right now. Nothing needs to happen first. “You need to draw a line in the sand and say, ‘from now on, I am a calm person’”. -Cathy Mazak   If you want to join a small cohort of academic women who are learning ways to amplify their impact in academia without the break-neck pace, apply for my Amplify: Writing Accelerator program. In this program, you’ll get permission to do things the way that feels right for you, and learn how to write and publish more while still controlling the pace. Stand Up For Humanity is a movement promoting and supporting a world that works for all. It is about embracing those qualities that serve the Highest and Best of our Humanity.  We are here to help each other connect and act from our universal and common good; and to raise the consciousness and vibrations on the planet, and within our nation, to one of inclusion, peace, and harmony.  And to demonstrate that even one small act taken by an individual can make a difference and contribute to the positive uplifting of humanity. For more information https://unityofwashingtondc.org/standup/    And,  America Meditates in Washington DC event on July 24th  A shift in consciousness is needed in our country – and it is needed NOW. We can’t afford to wait for one more mass shooting, nor can we depend on anyone else. We must do our part and we can begin by coming together and creating a cultureof peacefor our country and the world in Denver this July. Past research has shown that when even a small percentage of the population meditates simultaneously, the effect radiates out generating a cultureof peace that elevates the health and well-being of the entire population. Join us and together we can make history as we collectively shift the trends of time and generate a new energy in our country: an energy of non-violence, of peace, of a new awakening in human consciousness and unity amongst all people. Sterling A. Brown work amplifies and materialize the nature of the aesthetic connections that find continuity in contemporary black life. Brown opens, Southern Road with an epigraph of an old negro spiritual: ‘O de ole sheep dey knows de road, Young lambs gotta find de way.' It is with this, Sterling A Brown highlights the intentions of his work which is ‘to face two directions at simultaneously'. To look forward into the future while facing the past, the poems in Southern Road consider the relationship between the [past and present] and its relevance to Black people entering the European conceptualization of modernity (Gabbin, Sterling A Brown, Building the Black Aesthetic Tradition, 1985: 3. For Sterling A. Brown, diving into the depths of human experience and character necessitated a close look at language. In a 1978 interview Brown stated that, “The poets that struck me were those who were poets of the people and poets of direct—not florid…American speech.” The contribution that Brown offered is a clear understanding that what the ‘new' poets were doing with language was not new (30). Today Dr. Josh Myers will explore the work of Sterling A. Brown in a presentation titled, A Blue(s) (Note) for Sterling Brown. In addition to being a valued member of the AWNP collective and its affiliates, Dr. Josh Myers is currently an Assistant Professor of Africana Studies in the Department of Afro-American Studies at Howard University. This past weekend was sort of scary. Carrie's worst case scenario of presenting happened. She was scheduled to give a four-hour seminar on public image, but when she arrived the place wasn't unlocked, there was no water, but worse- there was no A/V. It was not pretty. And then... We went to a party, a SNL-themed party, and because our friends are good at peer pressure and we were dressed as Spartan cheerleaders, we stunted and Carrie had to jump on Shaun's back in a short skirt (with modesty shorts!) and she was so nervous that she actually got sweaty. So, it turns out that Carrie was totally afraid to do a cheering stunt. Carrie: This is because I am old and have broken knees. And Shaun had to face his fear by actually performing the cheer. Writing (like living) can be full of fear. Over on The Write Practice, Jeff Elkins tells of "Three Tricks to Overcome Your Fear of Writing." How does he deal with the fear? HIS THREE TIPS FOR OVERCOMING THAT FEAR OF WRITING ARE: He names it. He leans into it. Meditates through it. And he also has this awesome idea for desensitizing yourself from fear, which is our ..... WRITING TIP OF THE POD! "Take fifteen minutes to write something that scares you. Maybe it’s a scene you’ve been avoiding in your work in progress, maybe it’s a story you’ve been nervous to start, or maybe it’s a letter you’re scared to write. As you work, if fear raises its head, try one of the techniques above to work through it." - Jeff Elkins DOG TIP FOR LIFE: Dogs have all kinds of fears just like people do. When dogs have fears, we use treats to encourage them for brave behavior, we don't force them out of their safe places, and we don't shove their fear in their face and shout "GET OVER IT, BUDDY." Because that's not cool. We deserve to give ourselves the same respect. Reward yourself for being brave, don't insist on pushing yourself into your fear too hard and too fast. Don't push yourself, man. Today's guest, Greg Amundson, is a fitness expert, masterful storyteller and warrior with an extremely diverse set of experiences: college athlete, sheriff's deputy, DEA agent, Army officer, author, and CrossFit affiliate. His focus is currently on speaking, writing, CrossFit and promoting Warrior Yoga.   “Mentors come in all different shapes and forms, so there's an opportunity for God to bring people into our life on a regular basis. These seemingly fleeting and temporary relationships all serve a purpose in our growth, in our evolution, in our awareness, in our self-discovery.”   One of the most influential relationships Greg has is with Mark Divine, Founder and CEO of http://sealfit.com (SEALFIT) and Founder of Warrior Yoga. One of the key gifts that Mark gave Greg was awareness of breath. Mindful breathing is the basis of most forms of meditation, and the story of how Greg found his awareness of breath is quite exciting. It involves hanging from a cargo net in a steel compound, and even more about their powerful mentor-mentee relationship is explored in the upcoming book Firebreather Fitness. Firebreather Fitness is a profound book in that it is the first to fully integrate holistic fitness, which is simultaneously developing the mind, the body and the spirit. In the early days of CrossFit, Firebreather became a term of endearment based around physical accomplishment. Then Greg realized that there was more to a physical fitness program than physicality.   “There's way more to a physical fitness program than physicality. There's an opportunity to develop character, emotional resilience, discipline and spiritual awareness, and now we define a Firebreather as one who faces the trials and tribulations of great physical opposition with an indomitable spirit.”   A huge part of Greg and Mark's lives are their morning rituals, and they are both passionate about instilling in people the warrior quality of the morning ritual. Every morning, Greg: Wakes up at four and becomes aware of the transition between the waking state and the sleeping state Remains silent Goes into the kitchen to pour a glass of water Introduces the feeling of gratitude as he drinks the water of immense gratitude Goes into the living room and goes through a series of breathing exercises that are designed to still the mind Meditates to achieve a transcendent state and Transitions to the warrior tradition of First Words, which is the practice of bringing awareness to the first offering of our spoken word   The First Word process creates a rippling effect from the beginning of our day throughout the rest of the day. Through breathing exercises and meditation you create a still body of water in your mind, and “the spoken word is like a pebble that you drop into stillness to create an even rippling effect touching the shore of our life on every corner.”   “Words are real.”   Greg is the last guest in our Small Town series, and he proves that you don't need to be from a big town to have a big impact. He is the author of numerous books and articles including the most recent Are We All 'Post Racial' Yet?. He is the Director of the University of California Humanities Research Institute and holds numerous faculty appointments at the University of California-Irvine. Professor Goldberg's work has influenced a generation of students and scholars. His book The Racial State and The Threat of Race are two of the most necessary works for understanding the relationship between race, power, governmentality, and the neoliberal present.  Professor Goldberg does some great sharing and teaching in this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. David and Chauncey talk about Donald Trump, working class white authoritarianism, and how racism has evolved in the United States. Professor Goldberg also shares some stories about his career path where he worked with the Kurtis Blow on his classic rap video for the song "Basketball", New York before its "Disneyfication", David Bowie, Apartheid-era South Africa, the documentary Searching for Sugar Man, and of course the 1980s docudrama Shaka Zulu.  Dr. Goldberg was a great conversation partner and storyteller. This week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show also features a special guest. Chauncey's mother stops by the virtual bar and salon. Be forewarned as she does not care about political correctness. Chauncey DeVega and his mother talk about Donald Trump, black people receiving poor service at restaurants, Chris Christie's weight, and her support of Republican John Kasich.
