'She is the First Female Mayor elected to the Upper Lachlan'. Pam Kensit migrated from Ireland to Australia 32 years ago. She lives on a rural property with husband David, called 'Moorabinda', just outside Crookwell, NSW. An active community member and volunteer, she has raised 2 children and a menagerie of pets including Audrey and Abbey. An acclaimed artist, Pam exhibits every 3 years in Sydney and until recently would tend to the farm, paint in her studio, muster sheep or spend time in the garden. These days Pam makes the 35 minute trip into Crookwell to attend to duties bestowed upon the elected Mayor of the Upper Lachlan. Having sat on Council for a number of years, she has invested her time in standing committees that ensure the community interests are well represented. Pam says one of the first items on her agenda as mayor will be to lobby the federal government for improved communication systems in the bush. 2022 saw 5 female councillors elected to Council, with 4 men joining them to collaborate on the priorities of ensuring the farming and agriculture industries are supported. 2500 kms of roadway need to be maintained and upgraded so vital transport of stock and supplies can be transported to other areas and the city. Also on the agenda is keeping the community groups like CWA, Rotary, The Mens Shed, Probus and View Club, who lobby for social change and support vulnerable residents thriving. Alongside Pam is the power house, Deputy Mayor, Mandy McDonald, which is proving to be a force of nature that matches any weather event. Pam and I end this interview by cooking up tasty ideas for the Crookwell Potato Festival that celebrates 200 years. Over the years, Pam has developed strong connections to resettled Ireland migrants and regularly attend events that connect those who left during The Troubles in Northern Ireland, which spanned three decades between 1960's-1998. With a slight accent and an infectious laugh, Pam warmly welcomes her community members to come and 'chat' to her in chambers. It was a privilege to visit her farm during sheering season, laugh over lunch looking out on the expansive garden and whilst deep in conversation we get to the heart of why she put her hand up for the top job. Pam is also a published author and during the 2020-21 lockdown sat down to write her latest book Poems Outside The Fold. She is best known for her novel 'Dust to Mud', the contribution of a bush community to WW1. Pam is described by her colleagues as a natural born leader who does the doing. She is known as a collaborative leader, patient and grateful for the opportunities the Australian country life has given her. Please reach out to Pam with any comments or questions PKensit@upperlachlan.nsw.gov.au To visit Crookwell and the Upper Lachlan, click here. ++Catch-Up++ Atlantic Tales. This week Pat Flynn pays a visit to Men's sheds across the County. Men's sheds are non-profit local organisations that provide a space for social interaction and craftwork. The movement originated in Australia in the 1980s with the aim of improving the health and wellbeing of older men. The Irish Men's Sheds Association was formed in 2011 two years after the first shed in the country opened in Tipperary. In West Clare, a former national school has received a new lease of life and is home now to the Doonbeg Men's Shed.

We met Allan outside for a chat at Cantine in Fleet – High Street to have a chat on the importance of the Men's Shed, which is based on Crookham Park. The Men's Shed was formed in 2017, and has gone from strength to strength, the men's shed is a larger version of the typical man's shed in the garden: a place where you can feel at home and pursue practical interests. The shed offers the facilities to pursue your own projects or if you are feeling community spirited, get involved in one of our many community projects, all in our purpose built shed. They have some amazing machinery and equipment, and members also share the tools and resources they need to work on any project. There is no pressure, you can work at your own pace or if you just want some conversation, you will be in a safe, friendly and inclusive environment. COVID-19 affects the aging population at a greater risk than it does anyone else. Self-isolation we hear time and time again is not so much for us not to get the virus, but it’s so we don’t transmit it to the aging population who are at a higher risk to die. So for this Modern Manhood, you will hear from three aging males tell their stories of their life and the struggles they may face before we even knew about the coronavirus. By the very nature of their roles, emergency services first responders are routinely exposed to critical incidents and traumatic events. Collectively, these experiences can take a significant toll, placing first responders at high risk of developing mental health issues. From 1986 to 2016, Peter Bellion worked with Victoria Police, spending 26 years with the Major Collision Investigation Unit attending 2000 road fatalities and 20 police deaths. In 2007 after the Kerang Rail Disaster where 11 people were killed in a truck and train crash, he was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder/Injury. After having 3 months leave he returned and eventually worked back in frontline policing and crash investigation. After another 9 years, Peter’s PTSD had progressed to the chronic stage and he also was diagnosed with major depressive disorder. 20% of his skin was covered with psoriasis and he had 35% psychological trauma injury to the brain. Peter attended the Post Trauma Recovery Course at the Coral Balmoral Centre at the Austin Repatriation Hospital where he learnt how to manage his serious injury. He has since gone on to develop his management strategies for his injury utilising more natural therapies, such as exercise, stretching, tapping and floating. He now presents as a guest speaker at the Austin Repatriation Hospital, Men's Shed nights and the Exercise Physiology Course at RMIT. Peter was awarded the Australian Police Medal, National Service Medal, National Police Service Medal, Victoria Police Medal and Victoria Police Star for his service. Join me for this week’s episode as Peter discusses his valuable life experiences in frontline emergency services, his serious injury and treatment and how he has moved on in life.

On this hour-long show, we meet disabled people living in the Canadian Arctic and the Australian outback. Does cold, ice, snow, heat and remote living mean that these places are too inaccessible for them to function independently? Or do the communities rally-round in different ways to those connected towns and cities where access and independence might seem better? We hook up with a visually impaired couple who live in the icy city of Iqaluit by the Arctic Ocean. And, in remote Australia, we speak to a man in Berrigan who setup a "shed" where men can congregate and talk as they toil, in order to combat isolation and mental health problems.
