Union Commerce minister Piyush Goyal said his country's startups needed to emulate China by focusing on high-end tech and not quick grocery deliveries or fancy ice cream - harsh criticism that had entrepreneurs quickly pointing out the government's shortcomings. Piyush Goyal told a startup event in New Delhi late on Thursday that too many were offering food delivery so that “the rich can get their meals without moving out of their house” and were “turning unemployed youth into cheap labour.” His comments prompted hundreds of posts on social media from startup founders and venture capitalists, taking the government to the task for failing to create high-quality infrastructure and jobs and not doing enough to support entrepreneurs. Mohandas Pai, Chairman of Aarin Capital shares his views on the issues that the Indian startup ecosystem are facing today, and the minister's comment.

The Labour government wants mayoral combined authorities (MCAs) to play a leading role in delivering faster economic growth – so what can ministers do to help MCAs achieve success in this mission?     With an expanding set of devolved transport, skills, housing and planning powers, MCAs are well-placed to drive regional growth – but success is not a given. To capitalise on their potential, MCAs need effective decision-making structures, sufficient institutional capacity, and strong accountability mechanisms.   The government's devolution white paper sets out proposals to reform the capacity, accountability, and decision-making processes of MCAs, but do these reforms go far enough? On this episode of the Crazy Wisdom Podcast, host Stewart Alsop welcomes Swati Chaturvedi, CEO of Propel X, to explore the world of deep tech, frontier technology, and the forces shaping the future of human progress. Swati shares her decade-long journey in deep tech, reflecting on how the term evolved as a response to the "tech startup" boom, and discusses her focus on companies leveraging breakthroughs in science and engineering for humanity's advancement. The conversation touches on the role of government support, the power of hypothesis-free experimentation, and the critical importance of partnerships between startups and large corporations. They also discuss transformative technologies like AI, autonomous drones, bioinformatics, robotics, and the possibilities and perils of human augmentation. Unlike simple software apps like photo-sharing or delivery platforms, deep tech focuses on companies leveraging scientific and engineering breakthroughs to solve fundamental human challenges. This includes innovations in fields like AI, robotics, life sciences, space technology, and advanced materials. Her 2014 blog post defining deep tech has since become a widely referenced resource in the field, signaling a shift in focus from digital consumer solutions to tangible, science-based advancements. The Role of Hypothesis-Free Experimentation: Traditional scientific research follows a hypothesis-driven approach, where scientists predict outcomes before testing. Swati highlights the transformative potential of "hypothesis-free" experimentation, where AI and machine learning allow for large-scale experimentation without predefined assumptions. This approach mirrors the randomness of evolution, enabling faster discovery of unexpected results. Companies like Helix are applying this method in drug discovery, where AI-driven processes identify new therapeutic compounds. This shift could significantly accelerate R&D timelines and reduce costs in fields like pharmaceuticals and materials science. The Power of Government Support in Early-Stage R&D: Swati emphasizes the essential role of government funding in de-risking early-stage research. Through programs like SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) grants, government agencies like the NSF (National Science Foundation) and the Department of Defense (DoD) fund exploratory research at universities and small businesses. These grants act as the "seed fund of America," investing billions annually into high-risk, high-reward projects. Companies that receive these grants often have their private sector investments matched by government dollars, providing significant leverage for investors and entrepreneurs. This public-private funding model enables startups to bridge the "valley of death" between research and commercialization. The Critical Role of Corporate-Startup Partnerships: Swati highlights the importance of partnerships between startups and established corporations, especially in deep tech. These joint development projects allow startups to access resources, validate their markets, and co-develop products with corporate customers. While some founders worry about protecting their intellectual property (IP), Swati believes that the benefits of corporate partnerships outweigh the risks. Corporate collaborations offer crucial early traction and revenue, helping startups de-risk their path to market. This is especially vital in sectors like healthcare, robotics, and clean energy, where the cost of developing and commercializing products is exceptionally high.AI as a Force for Human Augmentation: The episode explores AI's role as an augmentative force rather than a replacement for human intelligence. Swati notes that AI is best understood as a tool that allows humans to multiply their cognitive abilities—processing vast amounts of information, identifying patterns, and making faster connections. This augmentation goes beyond software, extending into physical augmentation with devices like robots and smart tools that help humans accomplish physical tasks. While AI-driven tools like ChatGPT may lead to job displacement, Swati sees it as a natural progression, requiring humans to upskill and shift to higher-value tasks. The Promise and Risks of Climate and Environmental Technologies: Swati identifies climate change and global environmental degradation as existential challenges that even the most advanced deep tech may struggle to address. Technologies like atmospheric water generation, carbon capture, and agtech are making strides, but she notes that they are not yet sufficient to solve global challenges like water scarcity, food security, and air pollution. Drawing from her personal experience with air pollution in India, Swati argues that we need to better price and internalize the "cost of the commons"—the shared environmental resources that are often depleted for private gain. Without a clear economic incentive to prevent environmental harm, she warns that climate issues will continue to escalate. The Future of Space Tech and Human Exploration: Swati expresses optimism about the commercialization of space technology, noting its growing impact on daily life. Technologies like satellite internet (e.g., Starlink) are already improving connectivity in remote areas worldwide. The use of satellites for earth observation, weather tracking, and resource management is also becoming essential for sectors like agriculture and disaster response. Looking ahead, Swati is bullish on the potential for space colonization on the moon and Mars, although she acknowledges the immense technical and ethical challenges involved. While space tech once felt like science fiction, companies like SpaceX have made it tangible and real.

Interview with Chris Doornbos, President & CEO of E3 Lithium Ltd.Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/e3-lithium-tsxvetl-pioneering-lithium-development-in-the-heart-of-canadas-energy-industry-5064Recording date: 2nd December 2024E3 Lithium represents a compelling opportunity in the North American critical minerals sector, developing what could become one of the region's largest lithium production facilities in Alberta, Canada. The company's Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) project aims to begin production by 2027-2028, leveraging existing oil and gas infrastructure and strong government support. The company's resource base of 16 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) - five times larger than all other Canadian lithium resources combined - provides significant scale potential. E3 has adopted a phased development approach, initially targeting 10,000-12,000 tonnes annual production instead of the originally planned 32,000 tonnes, demonstrating prudent capital management and risk mitigation.Financial positioning is robust, with $23 million in cash and $37 million in federal and provincial grants secured. Importantly, the project qualifies for Canada's 30% Investment Tax Credit on capital expenditure, substantially reducing the financing burden. Operating costs are projected at $6,200 per tonne against current market prices of $10,000-12,000/tonne, suggesting healthy margins even in the current softer price environment. The company's DLE technology, under development since 2017, benefits from Alberta's established regulatory framework for resource extraction. Rather than facing traditional mining permits, the project falls under oil and gas regulations, potentially streamlining the development timeline.Strategic partnership potential is significant, with E3 actively engaging automotive, battery, oil and gas, and mining companies for project-level investment. Recent sector moves by major players like Rio Tinto's acquisition of Arcadium and General Motos (GM)'s investment in Thacker Pass validate growing institutional confidence in the lithium sector.Key investment considerations include:Scale Advantage: Largest measured and indicated lithium resource in Canada, supporting multiple potential projects.Strong Financial Position: Funding secured plus 30% Investment Tax Credit eligibility.Strategic Location: Established energy province with existing infrastructure.Technical De-risking: DLE technology validated since 2017 with demonstration plant pending.Market Position: Early mover potential in North American supply with multiple strategic partnership opportunities. The macro environment strongly supports domestic lithium development, driven by supply chain security concerns and growing Western emphasis on reducing dependency on Chinese processing capacity (currently 70-80% of battery-grade lithium). Government policy and funding support reflect lithium's critical mineral status.E3's approach of repurposing existing oil and gas infrastructure for critical mineral production could provide a template for future North American resource development. While market conditions remain challenging, the company's robust fundamentals and strategic positioning suggest potential for significant value creation as North American lithium supply chains develop.Management's focus on securing strategic partnerships at the project level rather than corporate equity investment demonstrates a commitment to minimizing dilution while maximizing long-term value potential. The phased development approach and strong government support provide multiple paths to value realization.View E3 Lithium's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/e3-lithiumSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Chamber President Noel Gavin calls on the next government to tackle issues at UHL, and to do more for housing and energy The President of Limerick Chamber has said a lack of clear progress and a slow pace of policy development is hindering health, housing and the energy sector in the Mid-West region. Noel Gavin was speaking at the annual Limerick Chamber President's Dinner and Regional Business Awards at the Strand Hotel in Limerick on Friday night, which was attended by Taoiseach Simon Harris. Noel Gavin said it's important not to become complacent by focusing only on the positive indicators of a buoyant Irish economy. Mr Gavin said: "University Hospital Limerick continues to make headlines for the wrong reasons, housing completions are falling short, and there is a visible absence of policing in many towns and cities. These are critical priorities for the Chamber, and we need a strong signal from decision-makers that they are equally prioritised by the Government. Additionally, the slow pace of policy development for harnessing renewable energy off the West Coast is concerning. Implementing a Designated Maritime Area Plan (DMAP) for the West Coast is critical. From 2030, Ireland faces €8 billion in annual fines if we fail to meet our emissions and renewable energy targets. A 'do nothing' approach will cost us €8 billion a year - so we urge the incoming Government to adopt the 'do something' approach and move forward with DMAPs. This is not only essential for energy security but also for ensuring Ireland remains an attractive location for investment." Delivering his keynote address, Taoiseach Simon Harris described the Mid-West region as 'vibrant, innovative and dynamic' and commended the Chamber for the support it provides to businesses in the region, noting in particular the challenges faced by small businesses. Commenting on the work of the Limerick Chamber in driving business forward in the Mid-West, Noel Gavin said he takes 'immense pride' in its proactive role in advocating for the growth and development of the region through initiatives such as its Energy on the Estuary events, the Better Regions Initiative and its active participation on the Shannon Estuary Economic Task Force. The Overall Business of the Year went to DesignPro Automation, which delivers bespoke solutions for clients across the medical devices, robotics and automotive industries, while the President's Award went to Milford Care Centre, which provides specialist palliative care and older persons services in the Mid-West. There were seven category winners across a broad range of industries. Michelle Gallagher, CEO of Limerick Chamber, said: "We're delighted to shine a light on the successes of all our winners and finalists. These businesses are part of the fabric of this great region, and it's important for them to get independent recognition and validation from our panel of judges. I'd like to extend a huge congratulations to everyone here tonight on an exceptional year in business." Damien Garrihy, AIB Business Banking Limerick and Clare, Sponsor of the President's Dinner and SME Partner, said: "It's great to see first-hand the phenomenal achievements of the nominated businesses year upon year and the invaluable support provided to them by Limerick Chamber. However, there are significant challenges facing businesses in the region, particularly in the SME sector, and we would call on the new government to deliver more support in the face of high costs and other external pressures in order for them to not only survive but thrive. SMEs are the backbone of the Irish economy and we need to ensure their future is safe in Limerick and across the country." Professor Vincent Cunnane, President of TUS and sponsor of the overall Business of the Year Award, said: "TUS plays a vital role in fostering emerging businesses in the Midwest. We believe that keeping young people in the region and offering them top-class educational and training opportunities is the ke...

In today's episode on Small Business School we're diving into a hot topic that might ruffle some feathers but needs to be discussed. There are massive gaps in the support for growing businesses! While there's plenty of government support and advice for startups, there's a concerning lack of guidance as businesses progress beyond the initial stages. Let's talk about what's missing and how I want us to bridge the gap!Topics Covered:While well-intentioned, many government initiatives for businesses focus on startups but leave growing businesses struggling for guidance and support.Lack of financial literacy is a major reason businesses fail, yet there's still little emphasis on teaching business owners how to manage their finances effectively. Why mentorship from experienced business owners who have navigated various challenges is crucial for scaling businesses. The misconception that more funding is the answer, but without the right financial education and strategic planning, businesses are unlikely to succeed even with additional funds.A call for better business support with more robust education and strategic funding initiatives tailored for growth stages.I feel like we are always prompting the start of businesses, and not the growth of healthy businesses. We need a shift in how we support small businesses, focusing on sustainability rather than just getting started! What do you think? Interview with Stephen G. Roman, President & CEO of Global Atomic Corp. Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/global-atomic-tsxglo-20-million-raise-advances-dasa-uranium-project-5778Recording date: 4th September 2024Global Atomic Corporation (TSX:GLO) is making significant progress on its Dasa uranium project in Niger, positioning itself as a key player in the growing nuclear energy sector. CEO Stephen Roman recently provided updates on the project's development, financing efforts, and market dynamics, offering valuable insights for potential investors.Project Development:The Dasa project is advancing on schedule, with earthworks completed for the acid plant area and the plant itself fabricated and ready for shipment. Underground development is underway, with major drilling operations creating two ventilation shafts to support continued mining activities. The project currently employs about 450 people, indicating its substantial scale and potential economic impact on the local community.Government Support and Political Landscape:Global Atomic has secured strong backing from the Niger government, evidenced by a recent letter from the president directing all government departments to support the project. Despite recent political changes in the region, relations with key international partners, including the United States, remain positive. The expected reopening of the Niger-Benin border should improve logistics for the project.Financing and Market Dynamics:The company is pursuing financing through the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), with approval expected by the end of Q4. Alternative financing options, including joint venture discussions, are also in progress. This multi-pronged approach demonstrates flexibility in securing the necessary funds for project development. The uranium market has seen rising prices, with term prices reaching $80 per pound, up from $35 eighteen months ago. However, uranium equities, including Global Atomic, have faced recent pressure, with the company's stock down 40% since mid-July. This disconnect between commodity prices and stock valuations presents both a challenge and a potential opportunity for investors.Competitive Advantage:Global Atomic's Dasa project holds a unique position as the only new greenfield uranium mine being developed globally. This status potentially gives the company a significant advantage in meeting future demand growth as the world increasingly turns to nuclear power as a clean energy solution.Risks and Considerations:Investors should be aware of the challenges facing the company, including market volatility, geopolitical risks in the Sahel region, and the complex nature of developing a large-scale mining project. The cautious approach of utility companies in signing long-term contracts until project financing is secured also presents a near-term challenge. For investors considering Global Atomic, the key attractions include:Exposure to rising uranium prices and growing nuclear energy demandStrong government support in NigerAdvanced stage of project development with key milestones approachingPotential for long-term utility contracts once financing is securedUnique position as developer of the only new greenfield uranium mine globallyInvestors should weigh these opportunities against the risks inherent in mining development and frontier market operations. A long-term investment horizon is likely necessary given the cyclical nature of the mining sector and the time required to bring new production online. As the global energy landscape continues to evolve, with increasing emphasis on low-carbon power sources, Global Atomic's progress at Dasa bears watching for those interested in the intersection of mining, energy, and frontier market development.View Global Atomic Corp's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/global-atomic-corpSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

While SBTi's new guidelines focus on cutting emissions directly within company operations, some argue this creates a false dichotomy, downplaying the essential role of carbon removals in achieving net-zero goals. In reality, both strategies—reductions and removals—are not opposing forces but complementary tools needed to combat climate change effectively. In Episode 69 of Bionic Planet, I spoke with Eli Mitchell-Larsen, a self-described "carbon removal evangelist," who provides valuable insights into the various types of carbon removal methods, including nature-based, hybrid, and engineered solutions. I'm rerunning this episode here today as episode 111. The discussion begins with a focus on the importance of both reducing emissions now and removing existing gases from the atmosphere to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The host and guest emphasize the need for a comprehensive approach that includes a mix of nature-based solutions, such as afforestation and soil carbon sequestration, as well as engineered technologies like direct air capture. Throughout the episode, the host and guest explore the different categories of carbon removal, including biomass carbon removal and storage, geological storage, and unconventional methods like kelp farming. They highlight the importance of understanding the capture, utilization, and storage of carbon in evaluating the effectiveness and durability of each method. The conversation also touches on the evolving landscape of carbon removal technologies, with a focus on the need for continued research and development, government support, and deployment incentives to scale up promising solutions. The host and guest stress the urgency of accelerating the deployment of carbon removal strategies to address the escalating climate crisis. Overall, the episode provides a comprehensive overview of the complexities and challenges of carbon removal and reduction efforts, emphasizing the need for a multifaceted approach to combatting climate change effectively. Through engaging dialogue and expert insights, listeners gain a deeper understanding of the critical role of nature-based and engineered solutions in achieving a sustainable future. She opens up about her struggle with infertility and how she eventually became a mother, emphasizing the importance of mindset and finding inner peace. The adoption process can be long and complicated, and reform is needed to make it more efficient and accessible. Many good and genuine people want to become foster parents or adoptive parents, but the current system makes it difficult for them. The lack of universal healthcare in the United States makes the concept of free IVF in the UK mind-boggling. Societal expectations and cultural narratives often place a high value on women based on their ability to bear children, which can be detrimental and unfair. Working parents often face challenges and are disadvantaged by government systems and policies, such as childcare costs and custody battles. There is a need for positive change and support for families and a shift in societal attitudes towards families and parenting. Relying on China for materials during a potential war would be a huge risk, and she compared it to Stockholm syndrome, where we become complacent and fail to see the harm it can cause.  But it wasn't just about national security; the conversation also delved into the challenges faced by marginalized communities. Jennifer-Ruth, a black Republican running in a primarily black district, shared her experiences and the division caused by political parties. It's disheartening to see how political affiliation can overshadow the work and achievements of individuals, hindering progress and opportunities for all.
