[CONTENT REMOVED] MICHELE SIMON, JD, MPH Public health attorney, food industry expert, author, and fierce advocate for women in the workplace. She is well regarded as an expert on plant-based foods and business strategy. Michele Simon is also a brilliant lawyer who has worked on issues of food and justice, particularly the plant-based space, for many years.  I met her when she was organizing at Expo West around the treatment of Miyoko Schinner, founder of Miyoko's, and of many other founders of small businesses in the natural products business.  Are women and other marginalized groups treated fairly in a white male-dominated business space?  These may be difficult questions to address but I believe we owe it to each other to try. Michele is also the author of the book Appetite for Profit. You can read her archived work on Eat Drink Politics which was created before she founded the Plant-Based Food Association.  For more information on her ongoing work visit her website.

As a public health attorney, food policy expert, author, and thought leader, Michele uses her passionate and fearless voice to advocate for a better food system through her writing, media appearances, and consulting. Michele's extensive writings on the politics of food and alcohol led to the publication of her first book in 2006, Appetite for Profit: How the Food Industry Undermines Our Health and How to Fight Back. NYU Professor Marion Nestle described it as “brilliant.” Michele founded the Plant Based Foods Association in 2016. As Executive Director of the nation's only membership association to promote the interests of plant-based food companies, she grew the organization to over 300 members and led a team of policy and retail experts. Her leadership and strategic efforts enabled PBFA to fight the powerful meat and dairy lobbies, while forging new marketplace opportunities for the industry. Michele currently runs her own strategy consulting business, where she offers advice on policy, media relations, investing, and coaching for women. Michele Simon is admitted to practice law in California, has a master's degree in public health from Yale University and received her law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. We cover a lot of diverse topics and I will be first to admit that it was very interesting to understand certain viewpoints as it comes to reducing animals in the food system, restaurants offering vegan options (and whether that's a good thing), and taking a closer look at reporting that's out there in the industry now. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/futurefoodshow/support

The plant-based food sector has topped $5 billion in sales in the U.S. and there seems to be a new company popping up every week with a new and innovative dairy or meat replacer.   Given that many of these new products pose a threat the well established industrial meat and dairy industries, there has been a significant amount of backlash against companies making plant-based products that are starting to capture more market share. That's where my guest Michele Simon comes in. Michele is the executive director of the Plant Based Foods Association, a trade group with over 80 members, whose goal is to level the playing field for plant-based food. Michele is a public health lawyer who has been researching and writing about the food industry and food politics since 1996, so she knows the ins and outs of the tactics used by the meat and dairy lobby to deter competition. In our chat, we discuss the challenges facing plant-based food producers, from educating consumers to food labeling laws that prohibit dairy-free products from calling themselves milk or cheese. Most importantly, we cover what Michele and the Plant-Based Foods Association are doing to combat these issues and further the success of companies producing healthy, sustainable, plant-based foods. Increasingly, we're seeing that the future of food is plant-based, so keep listening to hear how Michele intends to help make that possible.
