In this first episode of the SAFE SPACE series we're going to find out what it's like to live with an addiction to Methamphetamine, also known as Ice. Jess sits down with 51 year old mum Nicole who survived 28 years of drug abuse and has now been abstinent from all substances for seven and a half years.  Nicole shares her experience of living with an addiction, the initial allure of the drug, and the devastating impact it had on her life, relationships, and body. There is so much we can learn from Nicole about what addiction does to your brain, the importance of the words we do or don't use when it comes to drug use, as well as the judgements we can unfairly make when we see people affected by drugs. Nicole is now a senior peer support worker at Mission Australia and helps guide people through addiction into recovery. Content Warning: This is a conversation about substance addiction and you'll hear some detailed descriptions of the damage that addiction can do to your mind and body, it also touches on suicide. Among the things she's focusing on - is addressing the grim challenge of rising homelessness among women in Australia. You might be confronted by some of the misconceptions about homelessness in Australia. Sharon shares some pretty intense stories of people she's worked with who have experienced homelessness and the challenges they face. Helping an individual is important, however it's treating a symptom not a cause, so Sharon has a lot to say about the need for investment in social and affordable housing and the power of early intervention. We do talk about domestic and family violence and the role of education in changing attitudes and behaviours. I know it sounds grim - but I promise you this is a conversation full of hope. Toby Hall is an experienced not-for-profit and healthcare executive, having most recently served for 8 years as CEO of  St Vincent's Health Australia, Australia's second largest healthcare provider, until February 2022. Prior to St Vincent's, Toby was the CEO of Mission Australia for nearly a decade, and during his time at Mission, Toby oversaw the group's contribution to the formation of Goodstart Early Learning. Toby maintained involvement with Goodstart through a seat on the Board until 2014.Prior to Mission Australia, Toby was COO of World Vision Australia and before that, CEO of South Taranaki District Council. Toby is a director of UNICEF Australia, chaired ASX listed Sterihealth prior to delisting and was a director of Working Links the largest welfare to work provider to the U.K government. He is a qualified accountant with an MBA.***Episode guiding points: Learn about Toby's sunrise in Oxford, England with his father being head of physics at Essex university and mother a music teacher. I was fascinated to hear Toby share his influences including the different role English grammar played in high school and moving to South Africa at age 8, to then working in the music industry and being fascinated by the fashion industry but falling into finance. Questions our host, Vidit enjoyed exploring with Toby include: What were the key things he took away and had to delete from his time working at the then prominent investment bank, Solomon Brothers, How to create an environment of allowing team members to be vulnerable, the importance of realising that people aren't just brining themselves to work, they're bringing their whole life. Vidit asked Toby about the interview process to get his CEO roles at well known organisations like Mission Australia and St Vincents Health and listen in for his candid views on the transition from operational roles to board and chair roles, and what is the key difference, you might be surprised by the answer. It's now time to explore your curiosity. Young people and body image - all we don't know

Butterfly: Let's Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 13, 2022 32:34

As parents or carers of young people, we like to think we know what's important in young people's lives. But there's no way to tell what's really going on in their heads. If we're trying to understand young people as a group--their perspective in relation to the world and the culture right now--it's even harder. That's where Mission Australia's Youth Survey comes in.    “It's the largest national survey of young people in Australia,” says Rachel Christie, head of their Centre for Evidence and Insights. “We get around 20,000 responses from young people each year. It's a broad-brush survey that tries to understand young people's aspirations and concerns; what they value, what's worrying them, what they're excited about.”  One eye-popping finding is that for the past six years, body image has been one of the top four issues for young people. Since 2017, it's been one of the top three.  The problem is we're not entirely sure why.  So Butterfly is on a mission to investigate further, because the Mission Australia survey doesn't tell us enough. It's more like a metal detector, admits Christie. Helen Bird, Butterfly's Education Services Manager, agrees. “If we have better data, then we can better target our education and prevention efforts. We want to do a really deep dive into the body image experiences of young Australians from 12 to 18 years old, so we're launching our own survey this year.”   “I struggled a lot with my relationship with my body in the teen years,” says Clare Hennessy, a Sessional Presenter for Butterfly Body Kind. “The comparison voice that was opened up in me as a kid just got worse as a teenager.”  We do know that our bodies are not the problem, it's our thoughts and feelings about them that cause us distress. With that in mind, the more we know about young people's experience of body image, the more able we'll be able to support body kindness – both towards themselves and to others too.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
