Ever heard of the 'naked mole rat?' Probably not. It is perhaps the only mammal that never ages. Never gets old. So why do many reliability engineers and textbooks assume that most of our products and machines behave like 'naked mole rats?' The post SOR 885 Naked Mole Rat appeared first on Accendo Reliability.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.02.02.526898v1?rss=1 Authors: Stober, T. M., Oosthuizen, M. K. Abstract: Because African mole-rats express diverse social behaviors, they are prime candidates to study the effect of sociability on the evolution of brain circuits. This study compared the expression of Purkinje Cell Protein 4 (PCP4) in hippocampal slices of solitary Cape mole-rats, social Highveld mole-rats, and eusocial Damaraland and naked mole-rats. PCP4 is an established marker for pyramidal cells of hippocampal region CA2, a key structure for social memory and aggression. We observed prominent PCP4 immunoreactivity in the central part of the cornu Ammonis for all mole-rat species. While further verification is required, these findings suggest the extend of CA2 does not drastically differ despite varying social behaviors. Future studies may use this work as a starting point to explore the relationship between environmental requirements and the functional role of CA2. Copy rights belong to original authors. Political Animals: Mole-Rat Queens and Genital Power - 2/3

Zoologist Lucy Cooke is on a mission: to break down the 'sexist stereotype' she believes has permeated our understanding of the natural world. In Political Animals, she sets out to prove that females of the species can be just as fiesty, ardent, manipulative, aggressive, strategic, varied and political as males - questioning some of the theories laid out by the 'father of evolution', Charles Darwin, and hearing from pioneering scientists moving evolutionary biology beyond a male-centric narrative. In this second instalment, Lucy explores ways in which female animals wield authority; with examples ranging from repressive mole-rat queens to ducks with deceptive vaginas, all proving that power can be about more than physical strength. This involves a visit to the UK's only colony of naked mole-rats, overseen by Chris Faulkes at the University of London's Queen Mary College; an introduction to the world of labyrinthine animal vaginas and their evolutionary benefits with Patricia Brennan from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts; and assisting with feeding time at Twycross Zoo's bonobo enclosure, as Amanda Addison and Becca Biddle explain the power of the ape sisterhood... Meanwhile Joe Cain from University College London sheds more light on Darwin's attitude towards females. Featuring excerpts from ‘The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex' and personal notes written by Charles Darwin, read by Derek Frood. Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Lucy Taylor. First broadcast on Friday 25 February 2022.

You may already know naked mole-rats are pain and cancer resistant—but did you know these eusocial mammals make little chirps to identify themselves as colony members? The difference between a human and a naked mole rat? Genetically, not much, says College of Staten Island Associate Professor Dan McCloskey, whose focus is social neuroscience. Thirty-five million years ago mole rats started to burrow underground, leading to a social system in which a queen did most of the breeding and the rest of the animals worked. “Re-creating a day in the life” of these mole rats can teach us more about humans and the brain, McCloskey says.

The naked mole rat, Heterocephalus glaber, is fleshy, furless, buck-toothed and brazenly ugly. Yet what these small East African rodents lack in terms of good looks, they make up with an impressive array of biological quirks. These misnamed mammals are neither moles nor rats, and in terms of their social behaviour are actually closer to bees, wasps, ants, and termites than to other backboned animals. They live in underground cooperative colonies of up to 300 individuals with a dominant breeding “queen” and celibate soldier and worker castes. Biologists have identified only one other vertebrate--the closely related Damaraland mole rat--that uses this rigid reproductive and social structure. Until the late 1970s scientists believed that this trait, known as eusociality, was confined to insects. Naked mole rats deploy several impressive feats of physiology, including an apparent imperviousness to pain, a casual disregard for low-oxygen environments, and resistance to cancer. Indeed, these unsightly creatures both baffle and buttress Darwin's Theory of Evolution in multiple remarkable and apparently self-contradictory ways.
