The month of March is Women’s History Month and I’m excited to share with you my conversation with Kathrine Switzer. Kathrine was the first woman to officially register and run the Boston Marathon in 1967.  She was attacked in the race by an angry official who tried to rip off her bib number (#261) and throw her out of the race because she was a woman.  She finished the race anyway and went on to win the 1974 NYC Marathon and dedicated her life to championing women in sports all over the world. Kathrine led the effort to make the women's marathon an official Olympic event in 1984. One of the hardest part about pursuing our dreams is dealing with rejections, and persuading other people to give us a chance. The most difficult aspect of writing my book was that I had to convince successful and therefore very busy people to meet with me and give me a chance to interview them. I got more rejected trying to write my book than I had ever been until that point in my life. But I was persistent. I tried and tried until people said yes. It took a lot of cold calling, stalking, and flying to random places to meet and convince people I wanted to interview. If I had given up after the first, second, or the third rejection, my book would never have been published. Eventually, they all met with me not once but many times and became my greatest supporters. You will hear about some creative and crazy things I did to try to meet and convince people I wanted to interview, and how I turned a No into a Yes, and eventually achieved my childhood dream of writing my book. OOF. Judy and Linda were pretty disappointed by the scant selection of K-dramas this winter. We did find an unexpected gem, though!    Digressions:   1:08 – Listener E-mails! We get listener feedback on “Bridgerton”, and the terrible dramas we watched for Episode 163!   18:46 – Linda started watching "Youn's Stay" (윤스테이), a spin-off of the variety show, “Youn’s Kitchen” (윤식당) . We hope it becomes accessible to non-Korean speaking viewers soon!   25:21 – Judy scratched her H.P. Lovecraft itch by watching "Color Out of Space" (2019) starring Nicolas Cage.   27:30 – Judy continues her Nicolas Cage run with the Netflix series, "History of Swear Words"!     29:16 - "Run On" (런온) is a JTBC romantic comedy (???), starring Im SiWan, Shin SeKyung and SooYoung (Girl's Generation). As predicted, SooYoung is the best part about this drama, but we're not about to watch hours of something just for 5 minutes of catty fun.  39:43 - "True Beauty" (여신강림) is a godawful TVN drama based on a webtoon (sigh). It stars Moon GaYoung and Cha EunWoo. It's basically "My ID is Gangnam Beauty" all over again, but makeup instead of plastic surgery! We HATED all the characters in this.  48:05 - "The Penthouse" (펜트하우스) is an absolutely bonkers drama from SBS, starring Eugene (S.E.S) and Kim SoYeon. Can you believe this was our second choice? 1:04:39 - "Lovestruck in the City" (도시남녀의 사랑법) is a uniquely crafted drama from KakaoTV, and stars Ji ChangWook and Kim JiWon. Judy liked the natural acting in the slice-of-life flashbacks of the characters, while Linda was annoyed by the forced premise and lack of plot. 1:15:03 - "The Uncanny Counter" (경이로운 소문) was a last minute addition to this episode. It's an OCN supernatural comedy, starring Jo ByungGyu, Kim SeJeong, Yoon JoonSang and Yeom HyeRan. It's so utterly cookie-cutter (see what I did there?) and bad, but we finally know how they chose the baffling title! 35:57 - "My ID is Gangnam Beauty" (내 아이디는 강남미인) is a 2018 JTBC drama starring Im SooHyang and Cha EunWoo (ASTRO). Judy is mad at literally everything in this drama, but Linda suggests that that might be the actual intention of this awful drama.l 47:33 - "Cool Guys, Hot Ramen" (꽃미남 라면가게) is a 2011 TVN drama starring Jung IlWoo and Lee ChungAh based on a web novel. It's so patently trying to be "Boys Over Flowers", but it's even more boring and problematic. The goofy title sadly does not pay off. For our Winter 2021 First Impressions, we'll be watching "Run On" (런온), "Lovestruck in the City" (도시남녀의 사랑법), "The Penthouse" (펜트하우스) and "True Beauty" (여신강림). In Boccaccio's 14th century story collection, ‘the Decameron’, a group of friends hunkered down in a villa to wait out the plague. They passed the time by telling stories. Ten characters told a story each over ten days, with one person acting as story monarch for that day. To bring some light to these similarly lurgy-ridden times, medievalist Daisy Black has co-ordinated a modern Decameron of tales. Storytellers old and new from across the world have united to share their tales over a period of ten days. Ten days of ten stories. A hundred messages of hope and solidarity. Why do Sororities and Fraternities have their members sign pledges? Why do they have standardize pledges? Having not much knowledge of either, I'm going to guess that it's to make things uniform and make sure everyone abide by the same principles. If you know otherwise, I'm open to learn. If my assumption is correct and even if it's not, why is it that there is not a standardized "pledge" that leaders sign prior to becoming "members" of the leadership league? My mission of this and other episodes, is to disrupt leadership as we know it. We got a bunch of movie and TV news this week and most of it was a big ol' mess. But first Valerie, Tatiana and Angela do our first feedback section (2:00). Then we deal with Henry Cavill leaving Superman behind (4:50), American Gods Season 2 looking grim (20:20), as well as more information on Venom, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and His Dark Materials (32:45, except the last one's not a mess at all!). Moving onto more composed topics, Valerie gives her review of Hulu's The First (48:50) while Tatiana and Angela debut The Krama Corner (1:06:45) with discussion of the recently concluded My ID is Gangnam Beauty, the long-concluded Wok of Love and the newborn baby that is 100 Days My Prince. This, of course, leads to the twentieth discussion of age gaps in media (1:21:10), but we promise we say something new this time!

Oprah's new network OWN had a new host contest. I did my video (after many tries), filled out the very long application - hit send - and got a "gateway timeout error". Play Podcast 1Today's rehearsal was unusual. David lead it for the first half and then Rick came in for the rest. The first unusual thing I found when I arrived was Christian playing tamborim. Christian is our youngest member. He joined Samba Squad when he was 9 and today was his birthday. He is now 14 and very talented.Cliche alert: "where does the time go!"He is a surdo master, usually playing tercera or the surdo kit. So I watched him as he played the tamborim like a pro and asked him "where you learned tamborim?" he just looked at me with an embarrassed grin on his face and said "I just watched you".We had a lot of new players and it was a familiar struggle. Learning the material. I've been in the Squad since the beginning and it still humbles me.Frank once said we have enough material for 5 carnivals. And although some of us might have felt frustrated, I considered it par for the course.I had a chance to show Rick my store at cafepress and the t-shirts designs I had come up with. It was actually a big hit with everyone. Most of the designs got the responses I wanted. Well we're back into samba. I guess most of us took an "unofficial" break after the success of the Lula Lounge gig. Not all of us since Rick continued showing those who showed up last Sunday, new breaks. There were a lot of new faces mainly in the caixa section. good to see them.This is the new ride for our funk. The gang all went to check out Hugh Masekela on Friday. I have to confess i didn't know the first thing about him. But we've been having an amazing musical journey (with one missfire: DRUM!) and I was hoping for the best.Dani told me this was the music her mum would listen to when Dani was a kid, (which really raised the coolness level of Dani's mum to another level.)Hugh was born in South Africa in 1939. That makes him just shy of 70 yrs. But watching him on stage performing just confirms my belief that music keeps you younger. For the 2 hours that he played for us he was either blowing the trumpet, playing tamborine, scratcher or singing.My favorite song was Khawuleza. As Hugh tells it, in those days it was illegal for blacks to drink in South Africa and because of this, the shebeen was born. Shebeen is the name for illegal drinking houses. And whenever the police would raid the townships, little kids would run around yelling "Khawuleza mama" which means "hurry mum don't get caught".This other version is by Miriam Makeba recorded for Swedish TV in early 1966.
