"American Gods" returned with its second season, and we're pleasantly surprised! "House on The Rock" gave us a more coherent presentation, a more likable Laura Moon, and a spectacular look at its namesake roadside attraction. Pablo Schreiber, Ian McShane, Orlando Jones, and Emily Browning all are punching about their weight in this season premiere. And they need to, because Ricky Whittle's Shadow Moon is the weak link in the chain. We got a bunch of movie and TV news this week and most of it was a big ol' mess. But first Valerie, Tatiana and Angela do our first feedback section (2:00). Then we deal with Henry Cavill leaving Superman behind (4:50), American Gods Season 2 looking grim (20:20), as well as more information on Venom, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and His Dark Materials (32:45, except the last one's not a mess at all!). Moving onto more composed topics, Valerie gives her review of Hulu's The First (48:50) while Tatiana and Angela debut The Krama Corner (1:06:45) with discussion of the recently concluded My ID is Gangnam Beauty, the long-concluded Wok of Love and the newborn baby that is 100 Days My Prince. This, of course, leads to the twentieth discussion of age gaps in media (1:21:10), but we promise we say something new this time!
On the very first episode of Crossroad Convos we discuss some of the ins and outs of what it means to be labeled a skeptic. We mention Kanye West being at a crossroads and his relationship to Donald Trump, our Texas education and how racism plays a part in the control of information, slavery, prison and religion. Hosted by: Rashad Edwards Guest: Mandell Butler (Instagram: @mandellbutler, facebook: @mandellbutleronline) Music & Clip credits: "Renegade" by Eminem featuring Jay Z, "I Am A God" by Kanye West, "American Gods: Season 1" created by Bryan Fuller & Michael Green, "Dave Chappelle: Equanimity, Netflix Special", "The Usual Suspects" by Bryan Singer.
On this episode of You May Or May Not Like It, Mike and Scott talk about the show based of the Neil Gaiman novel, American Gods Season 01. Things get a bit contentious this week on the podcast, with several episodes prompting strong reactions from Noel and Kate. First up are the comedies, including the premieres of Playing House and Younger, the finale of Veep, and fun episodes of Wrecked and The Carmichael Show. Then we move over to reality, with looks at the return of Terrace House and relaunch of Battle of the Network Stars, an underwhelming The Great British Baking Show, and the finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Last up in our week in TV are the genre and drama offerings, including the premiere of GLOW (which Kate perhaps mis-categorized), the finale of iZombie, and new installments of Queen Sugar and Wynonna Earp. Afterward, Allison Shoemaker of Podlander Drunkcast, Debating Doctor Who, Consequence of Sound, and The A.V. Club, among others, returns to the podcast to champion American Gods season one and bring us around on a much-anticipated season that left us as cold as Laura Moon.Season Spotlight: American Gods Season 1 with Allison Shoemaker (1:55:51)Our Week in Comedy Playing House premiere (11:36)Younger premiere (19:29)Veep finale (26:27)Wrecked (34:43)The Carmichael Show (39:23)Our Week in RealityTerrace House Part 3 (45:17)Battle of the Network Stars premiere (52:02)The Great British Baking Show (54:51)RuPaul’s Drag Race finale (59:35)Our Week in Genre and DramaGLOW premiere (1:12:51)iZombie finale (1:23:43)Queen Sugar (1:40:20)Wynonna Earp (1:46:50)Article Referenced: The personal essay by Betty Gilpin referenced during the GLOW discussion is in Glamour, not Vanity Fair as stated. This time we sit down to attempt to bring logic and reason to one crazy show, well Bob is, Tom already knows whats up. American Gods Season 1 Episodes 1-8
It’s old gods vs new gods as Damask and Brod sink their teeth into the TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman's beloved book AMERICAN GODS. Our “protagonist” Shadow Moon is thrust into a world of gods, demigods and leprechauns as he helps his new boss recruit for the war to end all wars. Things get complicated when the Gods of old start attacking our beloved iPhones and dating apps. Will our hosts continue to worship at the altar of Facebook? Or will they go back to the days of their ancestors and start slitting some throats? AMERICAN GODS. Neil Gaiman and Bryan Fuller have somehow turned an impossible to adapt story into a visually stunning new Starz show, anchored by some gods of acting: Ian McShane! Gillian Anderson! Crispin Glover! Emily Browning! Plus, newcomer Ricky Whittle? American Gods is a little past the halfway mark, and we took the opportunity to talk out our feelings about the show. Namely, gush a lot about the visual experience and themes of the show coming to life. We'll check back in on it at the end of the season, but for now - enjoy!
