'Mysterious' and 'violent' prison attacks captivate French papers

PRESS REVIEW – Wednesday, April 16: Attacks on nine prisons in France receive wide coverage in the French papers. Next, four Russian journalists have been arrested on charges of extremism over their work with Alexei Navalny. Also, Canada braces for elections, although hockey takes precedence over television debates. In sports news, Paris Saint-Germain are through to the semi-finals of the Champions League. Finally, Swedish moose are TV's new stars. The French papers are all discussing the same story after prisons all over France were attacked in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The motives are still a mystery, as La Dépêche du Midi tells us this morning. The paper describes the different overnight attacks. Police said the incidents ranged from tags, to vandalism, to cars being set alight. There were also two recorded incidents of shotgun and Kalashnikov shots, which struck two of the nine targeted prisons. Whilst Le Monde tells us that all hypotheses are still open, Le Figaro says that it is most likely related to drug trafficking. The independent media in Russia brings us news that four Russian journalists have been jailed on charges of "extremism". The Moscow Times says they have been sentenced to five and a half years in prison. Novaya Gazeta, the opposition newspaper, whose journalists write from exile in Estonia, is also covering the story. It explains that the four were arrested last year for their work with Alexei Navalny, the opposition leader who died in prison over a year ago. It adds that one of the arrested journalists said he had been placed in a cell for "dangerous prisoners", where he was forced to sleep on the floor. In Canada, things are heating up in the run-up to federal elections, with leadership debates being held this week. The Montreal Gazette has a very Canadian headline: "Habs take priority: Federal leaders debate moved up to accommodate hockey game". The article confirms that hockey takes priority over politics, even more so when the Montreal Canadian Habs are playing against the California Hurricanes for a playoff spot. The Canadian website CBC takes a look at the two main figures facing off at the elections: Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre and Liberal leader Mark Carney. It says that where Poilievre represents change, Carney represents stability. The Toronto Star has an opinion piece discussing that change with two pollsters. They say that the lead in the polls depends on what the ballot question is considered to be. Those who think that the election is about Trump are more likely to vote Liberal, whereas those who think it is about change are more likely to vote Conservative. It was a tense evening for football fans last night as teams fought it out for their place in the Champions League semi-finals. Aston Villa fans were disappointed, but The Mirror was still determined to celebrate Villa's win over Paris Saint-Germain last night, despite it not being enough to get them through to the semi-finals. It's a heart-breaking win, according to the Daily Mail. Meanwhile in Paris, Le Parisien is headlining with "Le grand frisson", highlighting the fright Paris gave themselves in last night's game. But the night finished with a happy ending, according to L'Équipe. Paris now move on to the semi-finals, where they will face either Arsenal or Real Madrid. Finally, a Swedish TV station has seen millions of people flock to its live stream showing the week-long migration of Sweden's moose population. The Guardian says it has been an annual event since 2019 and has grown in popularity over the years. Last year, some 9 million people tuned in to see the moose cross the Angerman river. You can catch our press review every morning on France 24 at 7:20am and 9:20am (Paris time), from Monday to Friday.

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, we remind ourselves of what the Doctor stands for, as we watch him train up some very silly Vikings to be sweet and funny enough to see off an invasion by big stupid monsters with mouths full of teeth. Stacey Smith? joins us to discuss the story of The Girl Who Died. Notes and links Stacey discovered how much she liked this episode while watching it for Who is the Doctor 2, an unofficial guide to the Smith and Capaldi years, published in 2020. Wallander was a Swedish TV series based on the detective novels by Henning Menkell. It was re-made in English, in a version starring Kenneth Branagh as the detective, and featuring our very own haematophobic Viking Heidi (Barnaby Kay). And finally, the director of this episode, Ed Bazalgette, is very likely to have featured in this music video, familiar to both Nathan and Stacey from their childhoods: Turning Japanese by the Vapors. Jodie into Terror was our flashcast on every episode of the Whittaker era, recorded just a couple of days after the broadcast of the episode. Mark went to the premiere of Actor/Director Harley Wallen's new vampire movie “Beneath Us All” last week and here is where he first met Harley, his lovely wife and collaborator Kaiti and actress Vida Ghaffari 4 years ago discussing his film Eternal Code Mark and Hannah return and try to crack the Eternal Code with writer/director/actor Harley Wallen and actresses Kaiti Wallen and Vida Ghaffari Harley talked about his Swedish upbringing which made him an undefeated MMA fighter and 5 time black belt in Judo. He also broke into show business as a break-dancer (though he admits that he can't do MC Hammer moves) which put him on Swedish TV. Since then he has become a versatile and prolific writer/director working with such notable actors as Tom Sizemore (wait until you hear how he cast him) Tara Reed, John Savage, Corbin Bernson as well as Richard Tyson, Scout Taylor-Compton and Billy Wirth who star in his new action/sci-fi thriller Eternal Code which is inspired by brain transplants which are currently being experimented on. Kaiti is Harley's wife and partner and plays a good hearted working girl in Eternal Code. She started modelling in her native Michigan and tells the story about how she met Harley in a nightclub and felt his energy. They co starred in the movie Betrayed where he kidnaps her, which led to Mark speculating about their affinity for role playing. She is in charge of casting their movies and talks about the process and how they cast their daughter to say a memorable line to Tara Reed during their movie Bennett's Song. Vida gets to follow in her famous father's footsteps and play a scientist in Eternal Code, though this role is a bit of a departure from the good girl roles she normally gets cast in. She gets to kiss Richard Tyson, who she knew from movies when she was a teen. She talked about being typecast and only going up for roles in burkas for the longest time, but that time is no more as she is super busy. Just this year she has starred in Meathook Massacre The Final Chapter, Robowoman, and LA Shark Attack. She also had many admirers at the Q&A at the premiere of the movie which of course got noticed and commented on by Mark. I had the pleasure of speaking with Harley Wallen recently, and we had a lot of fun talking, looking at our animal pictures (he's got a dog that looks like mine! and he has cats), and learning about his newest project, Ash and Bone, now available on VUDU and how he got into entertainment. His bio is below: Harley is a multi award-winner and has starred in over 40 feature films and TV shows with legendary stars such as Tom Sizemore, Tara Reed and John Savage among many others. He started his journey as a Martial Artist early with Judo at age 7 and is now a 5th degree black belt. Harley also spent time learning other arts (Jiu-Jitsu, Tae Kwon - Do black-belts as well) and Mixed Martial Arts. His other love at a young age was dance as he was an outstanding break dancer in his teen years. His sheer talent and skill is what landed him his first opportunity in acting as a dancer at the syndicated Swedish TV cult hit 'Solstollarna'! Soon after, he realized he was bitten by the acting bug. Harley then moved from Sweden to the United States to boldly pursue his dreams. After a short stint these plans got sidetracked by business opportunities as Harley climbed various career ladders. After returning to acting, it wasn't long before the roles started coming and the growth he had experienced in the business world started happening to him in the acting world. After the film incentives ended in Michigan, he decided to start making films of his own. Not having a film school background with only limited experience, he decided to go online to further his education in filmmaking and took several more classes and seminars in acting. Finally in 2016 Harley and his wife Kaiti formed the film production company 'Painted Creek Productions'. The one thing he really takes pride in is his commitment to the character he is playing regardless the size of the role or the paycheck. Harley is now writing, producing, acting and directing and has found his life's purpose.  Harley can be found on IMDB, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michelemarotta/support

Me and the kids, Benjamin at 16 and Alex at 21, at home for Christmas, unlike the normal Christmases, even though normal has never meant exactly the same every year. Venues have shifted, as has the number and constellation of family members. But often, Christmas has been spent at my mom's place. When I tell the kids, the idea that we don't have to do, or eat, what we normally do on Christmas arises. Said and done, we decide to cook dinner together, a non-Christmasy dinner. Benjamin asks Do we have to watch Kalle Anka? meaning the Donald Duck/Disney-one-hour collection of cartoons that's been broadcasted on Swedish TV at three pm every Christmas Eve since 1960. I say No, but I probably will. As the day approaches, I decide I will get the mulled (non-alcoholic) wine with peeled almonds and raisins, ginger bread and a saffron sponge cake – my mom had sent it our way a few weeks earlier, keeping vigil in the freezer until the time had come. And time had come. – ready by three pm, and that I would watch Kalle Anka, ensuring the kids they were free to do whatever they wanted.

Melissa Walls grew up in International Falls, Minn., the daughter of an Ojibwe — or Anishinaabe mom — and a Swedish-American dad. But for the most part, she was raised as part of her mom's large extended family, which descends from Ojibwe bands on both sides of the Canadian border.  Many of them worked at the Indian Center in town, where she remembers playing with other Native kids as a child. "So I knew very well that I was Anishinaabe, Ojibwe, growing up," Walls said.  In graduate school, she studied American Indian mental health and bonded with other Native American students. Now she's a professor and researcher for Johns Hopkins University, based in Duluth, where she's immersed herself in Ojibwe culture.  Derek Montgomery for MPR News Melissa Walls is a professor and researcher for Johns Hopkins University, and she's immersed herself in Ojibwe culture. But Walls said she never knew much about her dad's side of the family. "I was a jingle dancer as a little girl and now I dance again,” she said. I “go to ceremony,” and “get to work with amazing elders across the region." But through all this time, she never knew much about her dad's side of the family. Then, one day about five years ago, her dad's sister found an ad in the paper for a Swedish TV show called “Allt for Sverige.” “And she sent me in the snail mail, a little clip of this little ad and she said, ‘they're casting for a reality show in Sweden, you should apply and learn something about this side of the family.'" Walls knew she was joking. But she applied anyway. She recorded a brief video before running out the door to drive her son to a hockey game. To her shock, she was accepted.  "And all of a sudden, I'm being flown to Sweden to be on a reality show to find out about my Swedish family. It was bizarre.”  The show aired at the end of 2019. The experience, Walls said, changed her life.  "I got to meet a Swedish family member. I got to learn about where my family came from. I got to visit and touch the house that my ancestors lived in in the 1700s,” Walls said. “It was deeply, deeply emotional." A growing number of Native Americans Walls, 41, is one of about four million people who identified as Native American and white in the last census, nearly triple the number from 2010.  In all, nearly 10 million people identified as Native American, an 87 percent jump from 2010. Of those people, about six million are multi-racial. Some of that dramatic growth is due to changes in how the Census Bureau collected and coded data, said Carolyn Liebler, a sociologist at the University of Minnesota who studies Native American and mixed race identity.  But she said it also reflects a willingness of more people to embrace their Native ancestry, after years of government policies that tried to erase it.  "Generations later, they're still Native people, but they're feeling less of that pain. It's more generational pain and not personal pain. And so people are willing to come back to it. It's more socially accepted now to be Native, to be a person of color," she said.  For Melissa Walls, she never had an issue accepting that she's Anishinaabe. But she struggled to understand how that core part of her identity could co-exist with her Swedish side. She hoped the reality TV show would help her reconcile something she wasn't even sure was reconcilable. "Which is, embodying both the colonized and the colonizer, walking through the world with light skin, but feeling like I'm an Anishinaabe person. How could I be both? Can I be both? What does that mean? Why did my ancestors leave? Did they come here and do harm?" Walls doesn't have the answers to all those questions, she admits. She's still evolving. But she feels more at peace about who she is.  "I think before the trip to Sweden. I don't know if I would use the word shame,” she said. “But I would use the word 'not proud' of being anything other than Anishinaabe. It was almost like a stain. Because of all of the harm that has happened because of colonization. How could I embrace that? How could I be okay with that?" There's still tension there, she said. But she's also discovered surprising parallels between her Anishinaabe and Swedish sides. Like how connected her Swedish ancestors were to the land and water and seasons, and how they lived communally, similar to her Ojibwe family.  Earlier this summer, Walls had a chance to return to Sweden, with her new husband, a Swedish man who she met while working on the TV show. They met more of her extended family, who presented her with a traditional midsummer folk dress. Right away she was startled with how similar it felt to putting on pow wow regalia.  "Then something that gave me the shivers happened," she recalled. When they were dressing her, they told her to tuck her handkerchief behind a heart shape on the folk dress that covered her chest.  "And I said, ‘Well, why?' And they said, ‘Well, we always lead with the heart.' And those words 'lead with the heart,' you will hear Anishinaabe people saying that. I thought, ‘What is happening here?'" Tears came into her eyes. She was stunned, she remembers thinking. “They're saying the exact same words that I'm learning in Minnesota from Anishinaabe people! These are deep teachings.”  ‘Finnishinaabe' Other Native people in northern Minnesota who have reconnected with their Scandinavian roots have discovered similar parallels. Finnish people revere the sauna, for example, while Ojibwe people have the sweat lodge.  They're both spiritual, in different ways, said Arne Vainio, a well-known physician on the Fond du Lac reservation, who takes an hours-long sauna every Saturday morning.  "It is a time to reflect on life and life changes,” he said. “I always feel like I'm with my father when I'm in there. And with my grandfather." Derek Montgomery for MPR News Arne Vainio grew up north of the Iron Range, the son of a Finnish father and an Ojibwe mother who owned a bar in the tiny town of Sturgeon.  Vainio, 63, grew up north of the Iron Range, the son of a Finnish father and an Ojibwe mother who owned a bar in the tiny town of Sturgeon.  Over the years, he said, he's saved the lives of several people who hated him for the color of his skin. Before going to medical school he worked as a paramedic on the Range, where he recalls responding to a man having a heart attack.  "And as soon as he got in the ambulance with me, he said ‘No F-ing Indian is going to touch me.' And then I started an IV on him, and I talked with him, and by the time we got to the hospital, which was maybe half an hour, he wouldn't let go of my hand and he wanted me to come into the ER with him." Vainio's father died by suicide when he was only four. When his Finnish grandparents died, “there was no more Finnish anchor, and I became mostly Ojibwe,” he said. That sense deepened when he attended college at the University of Minnesota Duluth and connected with an Anishinaabe group.  The reawakening of Vainio's Finnish side began in 2008 at a FinnFest celebration in Duluth, where he and others spoke about what it meant to be a "Finndian," or "Finnishinaabe."  There are about 1,200 Minnesotans who identify as both Native American and Finnish, according to census data analyzed by the APM Research Lab as part of its project Roots Beyond Race.  Additionally, there are about 1,800 who identify as both Swedish and Native, and more than 5,000 who identify as Norwegian and Native. Dan Kraker | MPR News Lyz Jaakola stands inside a recording studio at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Cloquet, Minn., on July 22. Lyz Jaakola also spoke at FinnFest. She's a musician and teacher at Fond du Lac Tribal Community College.  Both her dad's Finnish family and her mom's Ojibwe family played important roles in her childhood growing up on the Fond du Lac Reservation. Both families lived nearby; her dad's family had homesteaded on the reservation.  APM Research Lab Roots Beyond Race ‘Where do I belong?' Native roots, hard realities surface in woman's search for her past Still, she said sometimes she felt like she wasn't accepted by white or Native people. "There's some challenges in being a mixed person,” she said. "You know, feeling like an outsider, and feeling like, you know, an ‘other,' wherever I was. And I know that that's not only true for myself. I've talked with other folks who have had similar experiences.” Jaakola, 53, channeled some of those emotions into a song she wrote called “Red & White Blues,” which she included on an album titled “Finndian Summer.”  But as she got older, she began to see her background as a source of strength. She said it's taught her to look for commonalities among people, and also to celebrate differences.  "I think people who are aware of their multicultural background, it's almost natural to do that,” she said. “I think that that's, I don't want to say like a product of being a mixed person, but it is a strength." She believes that perspective helped get her elected to the Cloquet City Council two years ago.  "They trusted that I was going to be thinking about, you know, not only one part of my family circle when I was being asked to make decisions. So that's pretty humbling.” Jaakola said she's learned to embrace the totality of who she is, in a way that builds on the strengths of both cultures.  For Arne Vainio, it's what's inside of you that's important.  "And I have inside of me Ojibwe, and Finnish culture,” he said. “And I wouldn't have it any other way." Derek Montgomery for MPR News Arne Vainio stands for a portrait Tuesday, July 26, in downtown Duluth.

Lisa Petrucci of Something Weird Video joins Django Nudo and the Smut Peddler to discuss the career of David F. Friedman, whose theme week it is on Cultpix. (We completely forget to mention that Cultpix is now on JustWatch and PlayPilot!). The Prime Time(1958) - Friedman's debut films had all the hallmarks of the things that would characterise his exploitation oeuvre (spanking!) and showed how much he had learned from film maker showman Kroger BabbThe Defilers(1965) - Friedman "brought his own personal quirks, or fetishes or things he would be passionate about, whether it be carnivals, spanking or whipping to his films," say Lisa.  So too in this film about two juvenile delinquents who date and degrade women. He invented the term 'roughie', but also his 'best film alongside She Freak.'The Notorious Daughter of Fanny Hill(1966) - A period piece, for which Dave probably borrowed costumed from one of the major studios. One of only two films his 'discovery' Stacy Walker starred in. The Brick Dollhouse(1967) - More of a crime story, but with flashbacks where everyone is nude. "The pot party orgy scene is the most tame orgy you have ever seen," laughs Lisa, or a pot party through the eyes of a middle-aged square man.Space Thing ( 1968) - "The worst sci fi film ever made," said Friedman. "It makes Plan 9 seem like Citizen Kane." Judge for yourselves. She Freak(1967) - "She Freak is almost a documentary," says Lisa, as all of the carnival scenes were shot at a real carnival. The dazzling new 4K restoration by AGFA, "just makes your eyes happy." Probably Friedman's most mainstream film, which he put his heart and soul into. Thar She Blows! (1968) - A provocative title, to say the least, but it is David F Friedman coming up with a new theme for showing people getting naked: Boat Sex (with castration!).The Head Mistress(1968) - Dave going back to historical nudies. Dave liked to bring a bit of 'fanciness' to his films, this one based on The Decameron.  Brand of Shame (1968) - One of 4-5 films Dave made in 1968 and not one of Lisa's favourite films - despite featuring the original Django Nudo! The Lustful Turk(1968) - At the time it was the most expensive adult film ever made! Features spanking (of course). That's Sexploitation (2013) - Directed by Frank Henenlotter (Basket Case) it was a group effort to tell the story of exploitation cinema. Let's talk about digital identity with Linus Kvarnhammar, Cyber Security Consultant at Syneptic. Following his Swedish TV series, Hackad, professional hacker Linus discusses the biggest risks that insufficient identity management can create for individuals and organisations. Oscar and Linus explore the pitfalls of authentication, authorization (including MFA), and more – and how these lead to security incidents. [Transcript below] "We have a standard way of identifying a person in real life – passport, driver's license, national identity card. But as far as I'm aware, we don't have one that is universally accepted both by the individual and companies" Linus is an independent cyber security consultant and professional hacker. He is also one of the hackers in the TV series “Hackad” on SVT. He has more than 20 years of experience working in the IT industry where the last 10 years have been spent exclusively doing penetration tests of applications and networks with a few social engineering assignments every now and then. Find Linus on Twitter @lkvarnhammar and on LinkedIn. Watch Hackad at www.svtplay.se/hackad. You can also find the English subtitles at hackad-english.blogspot.com/2021/11/hackad-tv-2021-english-subtitles.html. We'll be continuing this conversation on Twitter using #LTADI – join us @ubisecure!     Podcast transcript Let's Talk About Digital Identity, the podcast connecting identity and business. I am your host, Oscar Santolalla. Oscar Santolalla: Hello and thanks for joining. And today, we'll hear insights from the world of hackers. Of course, ethical hacking is what we're talking about. And we have a very special guest with Linus Kvarnhammar. Linus is an independent cybersecurity consultant and professional hacker. He's also one of the hackers in the TV series Hackad on the Swedish TV SVT. He has more than 20 years of experience working in the IT industry, where the last 10 years have been spent exclusively doing penetration tests of applications and networks with a few social engineering assignments every now and then. Hello, Linus. Linus Kvarnhammar: Hello. Oscar: Very welcome. It's nice being with you, Linus. And well, good to hear more about the interesting work you are doing there. So… Linus: Oh, thank you. Oscar: Please tell us a bit more about yourself and how was your journey to this world of cybersecurity and hackers. Linus: Yeah. I- the last 10 years or so, I've been doing penetration testing as a security consultant. And yeah, my interest in computers started when I got my Commodore 64, I think it was 1987. And then I had an Amiga. And then I started working with computers directly after school and I've been doing that since. I also spent some time, some years doing development work, being a .NET programmer. So a quick bit about my background. Oscar: You also worked as a developer at some point? Linus: Yeah, yeah. I think my background as a developer, and an IT pro back in the early days, was a good way of getting into security. Because I think, for me, cybersecurity is about knowing how a computer system works and trying to break it, right. So if you know how the application is built, and if you know how operating systems and networks work, then I think you have a good chance of being good at cybersecurity, I think. Oscar: Yeah. And I can imagine if you have had, since a child you had a computer at home, not many of the ones who are listening to this had that. And yeah, I'm sure you understand. You have time to understand quite well how the computer works exactly as you said and also in your perspective as a developer. So when you were, for instance, a developer, during time you were a developer, you had also this interest in trying to find the vulnerabilities or something that doesn't work well, you had already this curiosity? Linus: No, I don't… Nah, not really, actually. I think I was mostly focused on – focusing on like writing good cod...

He made the jump to the international scene in the mid 80’s and by 1990 was already World Champion, topping his great Uncle Torleif Hansen in the family. :() An unfortunate crash in Poland in 1994 left Per with a spinal injury that ended his career and has him committed to a wheelchair today. As hard as this has been for Per, he has managed to transform his life being a great father, inspiring riders, making a name for himself as a Speedway commentator for the Swedish TV channel C’More as well as holding down a regular job.  Greg caught up with Per at his bedside from his home in Upplands Väsby, Sweden to have a chat about his career and talk about life. Not only is Per a friend to Greg but played a pivotal role in his move to Swedish Speedway with Gettingarna back in 1992. With Mark Lawson. Zoe Wanamaker, familiar to TV and cinema audiences from her roles in My Family, Poirot and the Harry Potter films, returns to the stage in a new production of Passion Play by Peter Nichols - a drama about marriage and temptation. She reflects on her approach to theatre, and remembers her father Sam, founder of Shakespeare's Globe theatre. Swedish novelist and critic Jan Arnald uses the pen-name Arne Dahl when writing crime-fiction. His novels about Paul Hjelm and his colleagues in the Intercrime Group, an elite team of Swedish detectives, were adapted for Swedish TV, and are currently being broadcast on BBC Four. The books themselves are now being published in English. He discusses the advantages of having a team of detectives, rather than an individual, and about the reaction in Sweden to the British passion for Scandi Noir fiction. In the latest edition of the Cultural Exchange project, in which 75 leading creative minds share their passion for a book, film, poem, piece of music or other work of art, Suggs from Madness nominates the poem On a Portrait of a Deaf Man by John Betjeman. It's 50 years since The Beatles first topped the UK singles chart with From Me to You, which was a hit in May 1963. But what else was in the Top 40 back then? David Hepworth considers whether this was a turning-point in pop history, and identifies some other classics in that week's chart. Producer Olivia Skinner.

I've learned so much from listening to you over the past few months and I'm deeply grateful. I have a question that perhaps you or one of your listeners know the answer to. I have a family photo album, circa 1915, in which all the photos have been glued to black construction-type paper…Can you or anyone listening suggest a safe method for removing these photos from their old pages in order to recover the information that's on the backs of them? An answer from The Practical Archivist Sally Jacobs Sally also writes: “My advice was to use interleaving sheets to protect the image side of the photographs from the acidic paper, rather than deconstruct her ancestor's scrapbook. That advice still stands, but your listener has brought up one of the few exceptions to this rule: Information has been written on the back of the glued photographs. That doesn't mean I'm giving Sterling a green light to soak his ancestor photographs.  NOTE:  Water and photographs should not be mixed by anyone who isn't a trained conservator! The scrapbook format is difficult to process because of the different elements from which it is made. The adhesive may be water soluble and simple to soak off. Try to isolate a leaf of the book with some plastic sheeting (i.e. place a piece of plastic under the leaf to avoid damaging the leaf below). Place a damp piece of blotting paper over one of the newspaper clippings under a light weight. Leave it for about twenty minutes then very carefully, using a spatula, lift the newspaper from the leaf. Place the newspaper clipping between two pieces of dry blotting paper to dry." The gang all went to check out Hugh Masekela on Friday. I have to confess i didn't know the first thing about him. But we've been having an amazing musical journey (with one missfire: DRUM!) and I was hoping for the best.Dani told me this was the music her mum would listen to when Dani was a kid, (which really raised the coolness level of Dani's mum to another level.)Hugh was born in South Africa in 1939. That makes him just shy of 70 yrs. But watching him on stage performing just confirms my belief that music keeps you younger. For the 2 hours that he played for us he was either blowing the trumpet, playing tamborine, scratcher or singing. My favorite song was Khawuleza. As Hugh tells it, in those days it was illegal for blacks to drink in South Africa and because of this, the shebeen was born. Shebeen is the name for illegal drinking houses. And whenever the police would raid the townships, little kids would run around yelling "Khawuleza mama" which means "hurry mum don't get caught".This other version is by Miriam Makeba recorded for Swedish TV in early 1966.
