On February 12, the Environmental Protection Agency dealt a major blow to the government's power to fight climate change by rescinding a key piece of research called the endangerment finding. The finding, issued in 2009, basically says: Greenhouse gas emissions endanger public health and welfare—and because they're harmful, they must be regulated. It's the legal basis for the federal government's regulation of greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act. So what does it mean that this finding has been thrown out? Host Flora Lichtman digs into this question with Andy Miller, an original author on the endangerment finding who spent more than 30 years working for the EPA. Guest: Dr. Andy Miller worked on air pollution and climate change at the EPA for more than 30 years. He was an original author on Endangerment Finding. Part 2: The Blueprint for a High-Performance Grow RoomWelcome to Part 2 of our conversation with Nadia Sabeh, PhD, PE, aka Dr. Greenhouse. In The Blueprint for a High-Performance Grow Room, Mark Doherty picks up where Part 1 : Lights vs. HVAC: The Invisible War Happening Inside Your Canopy left off, focusing on what it truly takes to design a sustainable, high-performance cultivation facility in today's evolving market. They explore why cannabis still lacks a replicable “gold standard” grow room, how over-engineering can quietly drain budgets, and why long-term success depends more on managing costs than chasing higher yields. The conversation introduces a “less is more” economic strategy—arguing that survival in a maturing market depends on reducing costs and optimizing energy use, not just pushing for higher yields or 30%+ THC results. They also dive into designing within real-world constraints—retrofitted spaces, non-standard warehouses—and the importance of integrating lighting, HVAC, irrigation, and controls into one cohesive system rather than isolated parts. This episode is a practical reality check: high-performance grow rooms aren't built on hype or “magic” solutions—but on data, integration, and intentional design.About Nadia Sabeh, aka Dr. GreenhouseDr. Nadia Sabeh works with indoor and greenhouse growers to create the best possible environment for their crop. In 2017, she founded Dr. Greenhouse, Inc., an engineering firm that specializes in the design and operation of HVAC systems that maximize yield and quality, while minimizing costs. Her blog and podcast, "The Doctor Is In,” is geared toward growers who seek to advance their knowledge in CEA, climate management, and CEA crop production. She speaks regularly at conferences and events and has authored or interviewed for over 50 articles. Dr. Sabeh discovered CEA as an undergraduate working on a commercial mushroom farm, has a PhD in Agricultural Engineering, and is a licensed Mechanical Engineer in several states. If you'd like to learn more about Dr. Greenhouse, visit them at: www.DoctorGreenhouse.com.About Mark Doherty, Doherty AgMark Doherty is the Vice President of Construction and Facilities Management for Grown Rogue, bringing over 15 years of experience in controlled environment agriculture and commercial cannabis cultivation. This week on the Veg Grower Podcast, I've been dodging rain showers, running a greenhouse heating test, answering listener questions, and getting the allotment ready for the season ahead. Despite the soggy conditions, there's still plenty happening both in the kitchen garden and down on the plot. Kitchen Garden: Cloches, Weeds & a Diesel Heater Test We've had tiny breaks in the weather — just enough to dash outside and get a few jobs done. Most of my time has been spent clearing weeds and preparing the beds for the cloches that will really come into their own throughout March. Cloches help warm the soil and give early sowings like carrots and beetroot a head start. I also ran a dummy test of my new diesel heater in the greenhouse. It was a Christmas gift I've been itching to try, and despite the temporary extension lead setup, it worked surprisingly well. The greenhouse heated up quickly, and it's given me a good idea of how to position it properly once I finally get those two trees removed and can run proper electrics down to the shed. A few tweaks are needed — especially around exhaust placement and raising the heater off the ground — but it's a promising start. Listener Question: What Veg Can You Grow While Heavily Pregnant? I received a lovely email from Tanya, who is 36 weeks pregnant and looking for easy, tasty crops to grow. I suggested things like radishes, tomatoes, kale, rhubarb and beetroot — but I also put the call out to listeners who have grown veg during pregnancy to share their experiences. If that's you, get in touch and I'll pass your tips on to Tanya. She also sent a photo of her chilli plants, which had some marks on the leaves. My first thought was spider mite, but after checking my own seedlings indoors, I discovered a greenfly outbreak. A simple blast of water from a spray bottle cleared them off — not my favourite method, but effective for now until the plants can move outside where ladybirds can help. Down on the Allotment: Lighter Evenings & Straw Bale Gardening The evenings are noticeably lighter now — not quite enough for after‑work gardening, but we're getting there. The allotment is still saturated, so I focused on tidying, checking beds, and clearing weeds. I also noticed my hazel sticks had been disturbed, though thankfully none seem to be missing. This week I mulched my garlic and onions with straw to help lock in moisture for the months ahead. I also started conditioning a new straw bale bed, something I trialled successfully last year. With regular watering and high‑nitrogen feed (I use urea), the bales break down into a warm, nutrient‑rich growing medium. It's a great way to turn problem areas into productive beds with fewer weeds. Recipe of the Week: Cheesy Leek, Kale & Potato Bake This week's recipe is a comforting, late‑winter favourite: a cheesy leek, kale and potato bake. It's simple, warming, and perfect for using the leeks we're sowing this month and potatoes from storage. You'll find the full recipe on the website. Beekeeping Update with Mark Mark from Buzz Into Beekeeping joined me for our monthly update. We talked about what bees are doing right now — clustering for warmth, taking cleansing flights on mild days, and beginning to collect early pollen as the queen starts laying again. It's a crucial time for beekeepers to ensure colonies have enough stores and are ready for spring expansion.
Joseph Fournier presents “part two” on how Pacific Walker circulation controls Earth's largest greenhouse effect: cloud longwave radiative forcing. He explains cloud radiative forcing terminology, cites literature claiming cloud greenhouse warming dwarfs CO2 forcing, and shows satellite-era links between trade winds, cloud shifts during ENSO, outgoing longwave radiation, and global/tropical temperature anomalies. He contrasts absorbed solar radiation, OLR, and Earth energy imbalance, arguing global averages can be dominated by regional Pacific dynamics. He reviews multidecadal “dimming/brightening” sunshine trends in Europe, Japan and the U.S., discusses aerosols vs natural drivers, and briefly addresses future uncertainty, AMO/IPO impacts, and solar/cosmic-ray hypotheses. 00:00 Welcome Back: Joseph Fournier & Why This Is “Part Two”02:15 Cloud Basics 101: Shortwave vs Longwave, Net Cloud Radiative Forcing05:51 Albedo Matters: How Small Cloud Changes Rival CO₂ Forcing08:40 Evidence in the Literature: Trendberth and Early Satellite Cloud Forcing Maps14:28 Clouds vs CO₂ Since 2000: Step-Change in Cloudiness and OLR16:56 Geography Over Global Averages: The Western Pacific Warm Pool Hotspot20:12 Warm Pool Size, SST, and Real-World Impacts (Winters, ENSO Timescales)22:48 Walker Circulation Explained: Where Deep Convection Sits in La Niña vs El Niño25:34 Warm Pool “Thermal Capacitor”: Thermocline Slosh, Water Volume, and Cloud Shift30:32 Sea Level Pile-Up and the Gravity-Driven Discharge During El Niño32:36 Radiation Signatures of ENSO: DLW/OLR Links to Niño Indices36:13 Cloud Forcing Ratios & Decadal Patterns: What El Niño Does to Warm Pool Clouds40:34 Global Signals: OLR vs Global Air Temperature and the ENSO Lead–Lag45:14 Trade Winds as the Control Knob: Linking Pacific Easterlies to Global OLR47:44 Tropical temps, OLR & trade winds: Walker circulation link48:42 Clouds as the “other knob”: absorbed shortwave (ASR) vs temperature50:29 2023 El Niño cloud changes: low-cloud cover & shifting albedo53:49 ASR vs OLR since 2000: the hiatus ends and the energy budget shifts55:44 Earth Energy Imbalance (EEI) vs GAT: why the correlation breaks57:58 Seasonal cycle first: EEI swings, hemispheres, clouds & land–ocean contrast01:00:10 Wrap-up: two greenhouse effects & a call for academics to test it01:02:54 Sunshine hours & AMO: UK/Europe brightening over the 20th century01:07:26 Aerosols vs clouds: modern satellite trends and the “brightening” debate01:11:53 Global dimming/brightening goes global: Japan/China records & Pacific teleconnections01:12:56 Natural vs human drivers: when aerosols don't explain surface radiation01:18:13 Forecasting the next decade: sun, AMO/IPO, cooling claims & big uncertainties01:26:17 Closing remarks: slides, Substack, and the climate–energy–geopolitics linkMore information about Joseph Fournier: https://co2coalition.org/teammember/joseph-fournier/His 2024 presentation: https://youtu.be/P2hVW0R67CYJoseph's Substack: https://josephfournier.substack.com/X: https://x.com/JosephF55175005=========Slides, summaries, references, and transcripts of my podcasts: https://tomn.substack.com/p/podcast-summariesMy Linktree: https://linktr.ee/tomanelson1

FROM TALENT ACQUISITION TO TALENT OPERATIONS is a forward-looking show for TA leaders who can feel the function changing - but need clarity on what it is becoming. We'll examine the rise of talent operations as a distinct capability, driven by automation across scheduling, screening, compliance, and workflow management. As logistics are increasingly handled by platforms and AI, the skills that matter inside TA are changing fast. Data literacy is no longer optional. Leaders must understand demand forecasting, funnel diagnostics, quality signals, and cost-to-hire at a systems level—not just at req level. At the same time, employer branding is making a return to centre stage. In a market shaped by transparency, social proof, and candidate choice, brand and messaging once again shape hiring outcomes. Talent intelligence becomes the strategic core: mapping skills, supply, pay, location, and future demand to inform decisions across the business. Meanwhile, execution is fragmenting. More organisations are moving actual recruiting delivery to on-demand models—combining RPO, freelance recruiters, and specialist vendors—while internal teams focus on orchestration, insight, and governance. This livestream will unpack what world-class talent operations looks like in practice, how leading teams are reorganising today, and what capabilities TA leaders must build next. Viewers will learn how to transition from recruiter-led execution to an operational, intelligence-driven TA model built for scale, flexibility, and impact. We're with Jamie Leonard, Founder of Recruitment Events Co, Jennifer Candee, Global Head of TA Transformation (IMI), Trine Rulffs, on Friday 20th February, 2pm GMT. Last week, the Trump administration announced it was repealing a 2009 determination called the endangerment finding. That finding had been the basis by which the EPA had assumed the right to regulate greenhouse gases for nearly 20 years. How will its repeal impact Americans and is the Supreme Court likely to join this heated debate? Michael Gerrard, a law professor at Columbia University, joins The Excerpt to share his insights regarding the legal, political and scientific issues at play.Let us know what you think of this episode by sending an email to podcasts@usatoday.com. California's climate disclosure laws are entering a critical phase as key compliance deadlines approach. SB 253 (Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act) requires companies to report greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, while SB 261 (Greenhouse gases: climate-related financial risk) mandates disclosure of climate-related financial risks aligned with the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) or an equivalent framework. Although SB 261 is currently on hold due to litigation, companies should continue preparing. In this episode, we discuss the latest developments from the California Air Resources Board (CARB), 2026 reporting requirements, and how to navigate ongoing regulatory and legal uncertainty. Last week, President Trump announced he was overturning the Environmental Protection Agency’s "endangerment finding.” That finding is a scientific conclusion signed by the EPA in 2009. It determined that greenhouse gases are harmful to people and the environment, and it allowed the EPA to regulate heat trapping emissions like carbon dioxide and methane. The current Presidential administration says that climate change is a “hoax” and that environmental regulations hinder the economy. Current EPA head Lee Zeldin is praising the move by Trump. Environmental activists and democratic lawmakers took no time to denounce the decision, saying that it will harm public health and lead to intensifying climate change related catastrophes, such as wildfires, heatwaves, and flooding. And, of course, there’s a court challenge. California Governor Gavin Newsom stated that California intends to sue the federal government over this change – potentially leading to a drawn out, years long battle to determine what the EPA can and cannot do when it comes to greenhouse gas regulation. Washington attorney general Nick Brown has promised something similar. But how could its repeal change climate science and policy in the United States? And what does it mean for Washington? Federal environmental regulators Thursday repealed the bedrock finding that climate change endangers human health. It authorized the EPA to regulate planet-warming emissions as part of the Clean Air Act and to limit greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks. Experts say the repeal will worsen climate change and have a negative impact on industries across the state.

In a candid conversation with Chris Russell on the RecTech Podcast, Greenhouse CEO Daniel Chait reveals the company's bold pivot to focus on job seekers alongside employers. After 14 years of helping companies hire better, Greenhouse is tackling what Chait calls the "AI Doom Loop"—a vicious cycle where job seekers use AI to mass-apply to hundreds of jobs while overwhelmed employers deploy AI filters to narrow down thousands of undifferentiated applications, tightening the window for candidates and perpetuating the problem. To break this cycle, Greenhouse is launching features like My Dream Job (allowing candidates one premium application per month that converts at five times the normal rate), My Greenhouse Portal (enabling real-time application status tracking), and Greenhouse Verified Badges (rewarding employers who communicate transparently). The company's newly launched Real Talent product adds three layers of trust: candidate intent matching, bad actor detection, and identity verification—all audited monthly for bias. Looking ahead, Chait envisions a future where AI agents represent candidates dynamically rather than static resumes, and where AI-driven interviews are fairer and more consistent than human ones. WARNING: News headlines can give you a headache. For example, take typical headlines on today's environmental stories:* Earth's climate getting catastrophically hotter, faster* Greenhouse pollution increasing again* President calls global warming a “hoax” * Fracking executive now runs Energy Department * US funding new coal plants * White House abruptly cancels wind-power projects.Whew! My head hurts. The negativity in such headlines tells people that grassroots activism demanding clean energy and environmental sanity is futile, for government has been shanghaied by a political cabal of corporate executives. But wait – while it doesn't get front page treatment, a bracing wind of change is blowing in from the countryside! It turns out that producers, funders, and consumers of alternative energy have not rejected a brighter, sustainable future just because profiteers and politicians command us to follow them off the cliff.Indeed, here's a surprising development that the calcified defenders of dirty monopolized fuels could not have imagined only 10 years ago: Even in the fossilized Kingdom of Texas, solar power now provides more electricity to our people than does King Coal! Despite relentless efforts by our corrupt governor and top Republican officials to rig the marketplace against renewable energy, solar arrays and wind turbines are soon to pass Big Oil's fracked gas as the top supplier of electricity to Texas homes and businesses. Here's an uplifting headline for you: Last year, wind, sun, and other renewable sources surged past coal as America's number one source of electric power. As a leading climate scientist concludes: “We are at the end of the fossil fuel economy.” So, keep pushing.Do something! Want to keep pushing for environmental wins in Texas? Check out the Texas Campaign for the Environment, who have scored some great wins and continue to push for more. Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. The state’s general fund budget is in trouble, as is its transportation budget. Inflation, higher than expected costs, lower than anticipated revenues, state services scheduled to expand. If you listen to KUOW, you’re probably aware of why the state is facing budget shortfalls. This next segment is about a bright spot in the state’s budget: the money generated from the cap and invest system. That’s part of the Climate Commitment Act which voters upheld in 2024. Here’s how it works: The state sets a limited amount of emissions allowed each year by major companies that’s the cap. Companies that emit more than they’re supposed to have to buy an allowance in a state-run auction. The latest auction generated $394 million dollars. The money is supposed to go towards climate investments like air quality monitors, electric vehicle chargers, and public transportation projects. But Governor Ferguson recently proposed using more than half billion dollars of that money to fund another program: The Working Families Tax Credit. It’s a refund that gives money back to low-and-medium income state residents. Meanwhile, Republicans, perhaps seeing an opening with the governor’s proposal, want to use the money to offset utility costs for schools. Environmental groups are already pushing back against the Governor’s proposal. The budget fight has come for this big pot of money and we’re going to hear two perspectives on this issue today. Guests: Todd Myers, Vice President of Research at Washington Policy Center Reuven Carlyle, Founder of Earth Finance, former state senator, and architect of the Climate Commitment Act Relevant Links: Seattle Times: A budget ‘rat hole’?
