Deuteronomy 20:4 was spoken by Moses, not to one soldier before one battle, but to an entire nation standing at the edge of years of warfare, enemy after enemy, again and again. What the priest was instructed to tell them changes everything: the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you. Not that He will help you fight, or hand you strength for your fight, or cheer from the sidelines. He does the fighting. That distinction matters enormously, because fighting and wrestling are not the same thing. When you wrestle something, your arms are wrapped around it, and you cannot put it down because you are the one holding on. Some of us are not exhausted because our battle is hard. We are exhausted because we are wrestling with something God is already fighting. Moses did not promise the Israelites they would never face the same enemy again. He told them who would be doing the fighting when they did. That is enough. Today's Bible Verse "For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory."— Deuteronomy 20:4, NIV Ponder Today God does not just help you fight — He is the one who fights. The promise of Deuteronomy 20:4 is not that He will strengthen your grip on the battle. It is that He goes and He fights. That is a fundamentally different posture than the one most of us have been taking. Fighting and wrestling are not the same thing. When we wrestle a worry, our arms are around it and we cannot put it down because we are the ones holding on. Exhaustion in the Christian life often comes not from hard battles but from wrestling what God is already fighting. Handing something to God and then taking it back is not failure — it is the pattern we are learning to shorten. The goal is not a perfect record of surrender. It is noticing sooner when our hands are full again and giving it back one more time. Moses did not promise the Israelites would never face the same enemy twice. He told them who would be doing the fighting when they did. A war that keeps returning does not mean God has stopped showing up. He keeps coming back to fight it. "This isn't mine" is a complete and sufficient response to a returning worry. You do not need to figure it out, wrestle it into submission, or explain why you picked it up again. Open your hands and give it back. That is the whole move. A Prayer for You Today Heavenly Father, here I am with this again — the same thing I brought You last week and the week before. I am honestly tired of listening to myself pray about it. But You knew this would be a long war when You said You would fight it. You promised You would go with me and fight for me. Not once have You declared that I had to win it on my own. Lord, I have had my arms wrapped around something You never handed me, and then wondered why I am exhausted. Forgive me for that. Help me open my hands. When I pick it back up, help me notice sooner. Shorten the distance between grabbing it and giving it back. You are the One who goes and who fights for me. Help me live like that is true. In Jesus' name, Amen. Want More? Sign up for our free newsletter, The Good Word, for weekly biblical wisdom and encouragement delivered right to your inbox. If you are in a fight that resets every time you think you are gaining ground — a diagnosis, an addiction that circles back, a marriage that heals just enough to break again — Psalm 116 opens with someone who understands. The psalmist describes the cords of death entangling him, the anguish of the grave coming over him. And then he does something remarkable: he tells you the outcome before he tells you the story. Not what God fixed. What God did first. He heard. He turned His ear. Picture what that posture looks like: not a king on a high throne receiving a formal report, but a parent leaning in close in a dark room at three in the morning, not wanting to miss a word. His presence in the battle is a gift, not a consolation prize, but the thing the psalmist says made him commit to calling on God for the rest of his life. Today's Bible Verse "I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live." — Psalm 116:1-2, NIV Ponder Today God hearing us is not a consolation prize; it is the promise. The psalmist does not begin by celebrating what God fixed. He begins by celebrating that God listened. Being heard by the God of the universe is not a lesser gift than the rescue we were hoping for. Turning His ear is an act of intimate, personal attention. It is the posture of leaning in, of focusing on a voice He does not want to miss. God is not receiving formal reports from a distant throne. He is in the dark room with you. Battles that reset are one of the most exhausting forms of suffering. Starting over after thinking you were gaining ground is a particular kind of grief. Bringing that specific weariness to God, not just the dramatic moments but the grinding ones, is exactly what He invites. God's presence in the battle is a gift, even when His answer is not the one we wanted. Being honest about that is not a failure of faith. The psalmist was honest about his despair. God did not require polished prayer before He leaned in. His love is not measured by whether He fixed the problem. One of the most freeing realizations in the life of faith is uncoupling God's love from our circumstances. He is leaning in right now, mid-sentence, before you find the right words. A Prayer for You Today Heavenly Father, You know the room I am sitting in. You know the thing that keeps coming back. Just when I think it is handled, I am starting over — and I am so tired of starting over. Your Word says You heard a man who had nothing left but a cry, and You turned Your ear toward him. God, turn Your ear toward me. Not because I have prayed well or believed hard enough, but because that is who You are. Forgive me for measuring Your love by whether You fixed my problem. Help me hold the truth that You are listening even when nothing changes and that You are leaning in when the room is dark and quiet. I do not know how this ends on this side of heaven. But You do. Let that be enough for tonight. I love You, Lord, because You hear me. In Jesus' name, Amen. Want More?

We've spent three months talking about prayer, and this final episode is where all of it comes to life. A few months ago, Jesse, our social media coordinator at Every Woman a Theologian, reached out to our community and asked them to share how God has been moving in their prayer lives. What came back left me emotional. Story after story of a personal, specific, loving God who hears and answers prayer. Sometimes with a yes, sometimes with a no, and sometimes in ways that are even more beautiful than what was asked for. You'll hear testimonies of answered prayers through miscarriage and grief, infertility and miraculous pregnancies, job searches, family conflict, postpartum anxiety, healing, and so much more. I want to be honest with you—not all of these are happy endings. Some of the most powerful testimonies in this episode come from women holding the tension between grief and gratitude. But all of them point to a God who sees, who cares, and who answers specifically. If your faith has been feeling thin or your prayers feel like they're hitting the ceiling, I hope these stories remind you that our God is not distant. He is near, and He is listening.Shop Prayer Resources ⦿ Every Woman a Theologian Shop:https://phyliciamasonheimer.com/shopWatch the full Verity Podcast Prayer Series:https://www.youtube.com/@veritypodcastSubscribe to Verity Podcast:https://apple.co/veritypodcastVerity Podcast is an Every Woman a Theologian company. Today's passage is one of the "See For Yourself" passages Chapter 8 of Start Strong: A New Believer's Guide to Christianity. Do you ever feel like a trial has you cornered, like you have to choose between trusting God or taking matters into your own hands? In this episode, we walk through James 1:1–8 and learn why James can say to “count it all joy” when life gets hard. In this week's episode, we explore:Who James is, why his voice matters, and what we know about his role in the early churchWhat James means by “trials” and how pressure reveals what we truly trustWhy perseverance is so valuableHow “perfect and complete” means mature faith reaching what it was intended to becomeWhat “wisdom” is in James 1:5Why God gives wisdom “generously…without reproach,” even to the immature and strugglingWhat it means to ask “in faith” instead of being double-mindedBy the end, you'll have a clearer, steadier way to think about hardship: not as random pain or a spiritual failure, but as a proving ground where God strengthens faith, grows endurance, and teaches wisdom. This powerful exploration of Romans 10 confronts us with a beautiful paradox at the heart of the gospel: salvation is freely offered to everyone who calls on the name of the Lord, yet God sovereignly knows who will respond. We're challenged to hold both truths simultaneously - divine election and human responsibility - like viewing a cone that appears as both a circle and a triangle depending on our perspective. The message emphasizes that we live in prophetically significant times, with ancient biblical prophecies about nations like Persia (modern-day Iran) unfolding before our eyes. This isn't cause for panic but for peace, because we've read the end of the book and know God remains in control. The call is urgent: we are the generation chosen to proclaim Christ in these last days. Every believer is commissioned as a preacher, sent into the mission field of daily life to share the hope within us with gentleness and respect. Our lives should radiate such peace amid chaos that others ask what makes us different. The question isn't whether God's promise is available - it's whether we'll answer the call to be those with beautiful feet who carry the good news to a world desperately needing to hear it.Sermon Notes – Romans 10:13–21 -------------------------------- DETAILED NOTES -------------------------------- I. The Promise Is Persuasive (vv. 13, Joel 2:32) - “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” - No boundaries: not race, class, morality, background, or performance. - Tension: - God elects, calls, saves (Rom 8:29–30). - Yet the invitation is to “everyone.” - Analogy: cone = circle from one angle, triangle from another; we lack the extra “dimension” to fully grasp how divine sovereignty and human responsibility fit together. - In Joel 2:32 both sides appear: - “Everyone who calls…shall be saved.” - “…among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.” II. The Power of Preaching (vv. 14–15; 1 Pet 3:15; 1 Cor 1:18–21) - Paul's “how” chain (reversed): 5. Beautiful are the feet of those who preach good news. 4. They can't preach unless sent. 3. They can't hear without someone preaching. 2. They can't believe what they've never heard. 1. They can't call on whom they haven't believed. - Foundational issue: Do we know the good news well enough to share it? - Preaching isn't just for pastors; every believer is “sent” (Eph 4:12). - Our lives and testimonies are part of the message; God uses “the folly” of weak people with a perfect gospel to save. - In a world of noise, fear (wars, economy, confusion), believers' peace and confidence are a powerful witness. III. The Problem of Unbelief (vv. 16–21) 1. Lack of Faith - Faith comes by hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ (v.17). - Salvation is received only by faith in Christ's finished work (Rom 5:2; Eph 2:8; Heb 11). - We are more “blessed” than those who saw Jesus physically but did not have to (John 20:29). 2. Willful Ignorance / Suppression (Ps 19; Rom 1) - Creation universally proclaims God's glory; no one has a valid excuse. - Evolution and materialism often used to dodge accountability to a Creator. - If there is a Creator and an Author, then His standards are binding. 3. Pride (esp. Israel's example) - Israel had maximum revelation yet often refused God. - Called to be a light to the nations (Isa 49:6; Mic 4:1–2) but hoarded truth instead. - Jonah: a prophet who would “rather die” than see Gentiles repent; a picture of nationalistic pride and spiritual hard-heartedness. 4. Love of Sin (John 3:16–21; Rom 1:32) - People love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil. - Not only practice sin but approve of others who do. - We resist God like a child shouting “no” to every loving boundary. IV. Our Moment in History - Rapid fulfillment of prophecy; increasing pressure and confusion. - God is purifying a people who: - Hold to His Word, - Refuse to compromise, - Stand with biblical clarity in a dark, chaotic age. -------------------------------- PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS -------------------------------- 1. Clarify the Gospel - Write out the gospel in a few sentences; practice explaining it simply. 2. Live as “Sent Ones” - Ask daily: “Lord, who are you sending me to today?” - Look for people who notice your peace, then share the reason for your hope (1 Pet 3:15). 3. Strengthen Your Faith - Spend regular time in Scripture—especially Romans, John, and Psalms—to deepen confidence in Christ. 4. Confront Pride and Sin - Ask the Spirit to reveal areas where you: - Assume you “deserve” salvation, or - Refuse to surrender favorite sins. Repent quickly. 5. Grow in Bold, Gentle Witness - Pray for boldness + gentleness. - Set a goal: share your testimony or the gospel with at least one person this week. -------------------------------- DISCUSSION QUESTIONS -------------------------------- 1. How do you personally hold together “everyone who calls” and God's sovereign election without dismissing either? 2. On a scale of 1–10, how prepared do you feel to explain the gospel? What would help you grow? 3. Where have you seen God use your story (testimony) to impact someone else? 4. Which obstacle to belief hits closest to home for you: lack of faith, pride, or love of sin? Why? 5. In what ways might we be acting like Jonah—resenting or avoiding certain people or groups God wants to reach? 6. What specific steps can your group take to live more as “sent ones” in your workplaces, schools, and neighborhoods?
For many believers, doubt feels like failure. We assume that strong faith means never asking questions, never wrestling, never wondering why. But Scripture paints a different picture. Faith is not the absence of questions—it is trust in the midst of them. Romans 8:37-39 reminds us of an unshakable truth: nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Not death or life. Not angels or demons. Not the present or the future. Not even our seasons of uncertainty. Doubt often surfaces when we want certainty about the unseen. We long for proof, reassurance, and clarity before fully surrendering. But faith requires trust beyond what we can explain. Hebrews 11:1 describes faith as confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. There is a difference between honest wrestling and hardened unbelief. Honest wrestling leans in. It asks, What does this teach me about God? It searches Scripture not to control God, but to know Him more deeply. Doubt can become a doorway. When approached with humility, it pushes us to examine what we believe and why. It strips away shallow assumptions and invites deeper trust. The goal is not to figure God out completely—that is impossible—but to know His character well enough to trust Him even when answers are incomplete. God is not threatened by your questions. He is not intimidated by your uncertainty. He welcomes sincere seekers. And when doubt drives you toward Him instead of away from Him, it becomes a refining tool rather than a destructive force. You may not have every answer. But you can rest in this assurance: you are secure in Christ. Main Takeaways Doubt is not the enemy of faith; avoidance and isolation are. Faith involves trusting God even without complete understanding. Scripture invites honest wrestling and deeper inquiry. Nothing—not even doubt—can separate you from God’s love. Asking what doubt teaches about God can strengthen intimacy with Him. Today’s Bible Verse No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. - Romans 8:37-39 Your Daily Prayer Prayer excerpt for listeners: “In my uncertainty, help me trust Your character and draw closer to You.” Listen to the full prayer here. DOING LIFE: Daily Devotions For Finding Peace in Stressful Times
Remember What God Has done in the Past to Strengthen Your Faith for the Future!
There's a chemistry to cooking that, you know, you have to give it time. As How long does it take to make idli? Overnight. "Overnight.! I want it now." You know, you have to let it ferment, and it has to, you know, like "you want it fluffy, or you want some hard thing.?" So if if we want to really change, if we want to make the most of human life, we have to stay in it for the whole lifetime. Nothing is excluded - all the detours we take in the ways that we are subjected to our own punishments through our minds, and we make mistakes and so forth. These all go in the compost pile, and they become rich nutrients for us, 'there's no shortcut to maturity.' You have to struggle through it. Everyone's going to struggle through it anyway. But if you're smart and you dedicate everything to Kṛṣṇa, and say, "Kṛṣṇa, as I'm going through all these things, please let it come out so that I'm actually a nice person, just let me be a non-envious person, and so that I can do good for myself, I don't torture myself, and I can also be good." The Journey to Becoming | Self Improvement, Productivity, Lower Stress
We are talking about all things friendship today on this episode with my friend Michelle Castro. Friendships are a gift from God and as believers we are called to sharpen each other as scripture reminds us…but what does that even mean? How do you begin to form Godly friendships? For the woman who is on her journey to becoming all that God has created her to be, we must also value the gift of honesty; whether that's being honest in what you are going through or even how to honestly share your feelings with a trusted friend. We also need to remember that there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother, Jesus. He wants to be in relationship with YOU! We continue our discussion on misbelief and strive to get to the heart of how our beliefs primarily exist to serve and protect us. However they are seldom if ever, fact. I want you to hear that. Few if any of your beliefs are fact. They are not right and other's are wrong. And a dramatic amount of your current problems and stresses and relational issues are due to your unhealthy relationship with your so called beliefs. Duke University professor of psychology and behavioral economics Dan Arielly claims they are mostly in truth, “misbeliefs.” His book, MISBELIEF: WHAT MAKES RATIONAL PEOPLE BELIEVE IRRATIONAL THINGS, is our muse for this series. My co host this discussion is my brother, Jared Angaza. Who every once in a while I'll remind you that while our last names are different and we look nothing alike, we have the same parents. Supposedly. But through a lifetime of pursuing wisdom, we've seen the early beliefs of our upbringing…change. Evolve. Get rejected. So we're going to try and get to some root issues of what our beliefs are actually useful for, and when they are not. And ultimately I hope we can showcase the great freedom there is in trading in the word belief, for the term of…faith.
