Barry and Abigail discuss Christmas Cheers by Straight No Chaser and sample Spotted Cow and Moon Man from New Glarus Brewing Co. in New Glarus, Wisconsin, and Pickle Tickle from Barn Town Brewing in West Des Moines, Iowa. Listen to the original ¿Dónde Esta Santa Claus? by Augie Rios Barry compared the harmonies in I'll Be Home for Christmas to the harmonies in Auld Lang Syne by The Beach Boys (who were in turn inspired by The Lettermen's harmonies). We played the original Hey Santa! by The Brian Setzer Orchestra. Read the story behind the writing of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The definitive version of You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch for Barry is The Whirling Dervishes' version, whereas for Abigail, it is the full version from the original TV special, sung by Thurl Ravenscroft. We compared Straight No Chaser's version of O Holy Night to the Tracy Chapman version and the Céline Dion version. Read more about the Christmas pickle tradition! We confirmed that “upsot” is indeed in the original lyrics of Jingle Bells! We also played a little bit of our favorite version of the song, by Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters. Who Spiked the Eggnog? is only Abigail's second-favorite eggnog-based Christmas song, after Eggnogorant by Terry Anderson & The Olympic Ass-Kickin Team, which you can hear on our first-ever Christmas bonus episode from 2021, Bonus: Greet the Hummels! Original Songs by Friends of the Pod! We played a bit of Straight No Chaser's version of Carol of the Bells. Up next… Who's Next by The Who, submitted to our Jukebox by Todd Sider. This episode, our Season 5 opener, is scheduled to drop on March 7, 2025. Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition. The fantasy football season is over, so we give you an episode as footballs fans. We run through each team and try to predict what is coming on Monday with firings and staffing changes, dive into the Antonio Brown saga briefly and then wrap it up by telling you about all of the Week 18 playoff scenario's and making our predictions. Featuring beers from New Glarus Brewing Co and Destihl.
A lot of ink has been spilled writing about Spotted Cow, the behemoth flagship of New Glarus Brewing Co., but there are a good number of beers that the brewery puts out each year, including seasonals and one offs that go beyond the bovine. It's the limited edition beers that often capture the interest and attention of beer fans – if they can get them. Recently New Glarus released two small batch beers, both boasting chocolate as an ingredient. A Blueberry Chocolate Stout and a Mocha Berry Bock are delightful in their own ways, never neglecting the base beer and teasing out the chocolate with each sip. To find out more about these beers and working with special ingredients we reached out to Daniel Carey. He's the co-founder and brewer at New Glarus Brewing Co. He and wife Deborah Carey founded the brewery in 1993 and have been there every step of the way as it has grown and thrived all while staying in the confines of Wisconsin. Daniel had a long career in beer before starting his own brewery, and he talks about his love of certain styles, customer feedback that is sometimes slings and arrows and sometimes loyal pride and praise. If you follow beer news you might know that the brewery is also in the midst of a lawsuit and countersuit. Since that is ongoing it's not something the brewery said it was able to publicly discuss. So, for this show we're sticking with flavor and process. The 2nd show with our good friends Nicole and Sabine of the Pinkshots Podcast got a bit crazy, as we expected, and we’re delighted. Fueled again by some amazing beer from Burn ‘Em Brewing, Cowboy, Paulie G, and Dougy Fresh kick back with the ladies and talk sex, a little beer . . . but mostly sex. Any chance of being “Family Friendly” went out the window at about the two-minute mark. Joining the gang once again at Burn ‘Em was Jerry Huener, Burn ‘Em founder, Blake Murray (when he wasn’t running around trying to keep up with a big Saturday crowd), and Mr. Emmit Muckles. They touch on fetishes(no pun intended), nude vacations, bad dates, and the possible need for an intervention for Nicole. Keep the kids far away from the speakers this week, but a must for those who need a good laugh. Check out the Pinkshots Facebook page and tune into their shows for more female insight on life . . . and alcohol. And be sure to get your butt over to Burn ‘Em Brewing to grab yourself a few fine pints of craft goodness. Tell ‘em the Pigs sent you. We recently announced the newest Pig, Warren Kluck, and although he's been on a few shows, tonight is our first Blind Pig South Bend edition with Dougy Fresh, Pauly G, Cowboy, and Mr. Warren Kluck. We were joined by good friends, the host for the evening, Ryan Douglas (Dougy's big bro), Jeremy Nicely, and Rick Greenless. This turned into a three hour debauchery, so we split it up into three segments for your listening pleasure. Part One starts out with some incredible beer, Taxman's Mexican Chocolate Cake a Belgian-style dubbel, aged in bourbon barrels with cocoa nibs, cinnamon sticks and Mexican peppers. It quickly warmed our hearts and got us chatting about Untappd and how cool, or incredibly dorky it is; home brewing; Uber nightmares; deuchey beer bottle collections (for anyone over the age of 21); how much is too much for a beer; the best live music joint around, Vegetable Buddies; and The Stingy Pours, the all-star rock band that never was. . . The debates get heated at times, but love is felt throughout. Ok, maybe it was all the high gravity beer, but we're sure you'll feel it too when you tune in. Lots of great brews were reviewed in Part One including: Perrin Brewery's Unfinished Business; 3 Floyd's Brewing Company's Gorch Fock; The Bier Brewery's Sanitarium; and a little hidden gem, Kasteel Barista Chocolate Quad Belgian Ale Cheers! Shout outs in tonight's episode include: Briarscratch Brewing; Short's Brewing Company; New Glarus Brewing Co; Fiddler's Hearth; Niko's Open Stage; Jockey Box Hero(join us tomorrow at The Hatch); Nicole Haworth and Sun King Brewing Company; and the 18th Street Brewery

Season 1, Episode 17 - This week we’re trying out some of the awesome beers coming out of Firestone Walker Barrelworks, as well as some midwest flavor from New Glarus. Firestone Walker is regarded as one of the best breweries in America. From their awarding winning IPA, to their barrel-aged blends, Matt Brynildson and crew definitely know how to bring the radness. So, when a brewery of this caliber decides to start producing sour beer, the outcome is obviously going to be nothing short of incredible, right? Yep! We start off with the Bretta Weisse, their Berliner style wheat beer. This beer clocks in at 4.9% ABV, and a total acidity of 7. We’re unclear on what exactly an acidity of 7 actually is, but this beer definitely has a nice balance of tartness and and malty-wheat goodness. Firestone Walker Barrelworks Beers Next on deck from Bottleworks is the Feral One. From Firestone Walker: “We humbly offer you our inaugural Barrelworks bottling on the occasion of our first anniversary—Feral One. A blend of our best efforts, from hand-selected barrels chosen by the Masterblender and Barrelmeister. Feral One is a blend of Sour Opal (American Sour Ale – 30%), SLOambic (Fruited Sour – 14%), Agrestic (American Wild Red Ale – 16%), and Lil’ Mikkel (Bretted Saison – 40%). Savor now, or age longer for a special occasion. A Santé!” Needless to say, this beer is quite delicious. Getting away from the Firestone brews and wrapping up the sour beer part of the show, our friend John Ryti, hooked us up with a New Glarus brew from their Thumbprint series named, Wild Sour Ale. We may have held on to this beer a little longer than we should have, which is kind of a bummer, but high-fives still go out to Ryti for the hookup. New Glarus Brewing Co. – Wild Sour Ale Feature: “Going In Blind.” Yvonne joins us for another edition of what is probably our favorite game on the show, Going In Blind. The beers this week were purchased by Matt’s wife, Alicia, and she went out of her way to throw us a curve ball with her selections. Until next week, brew the shit out of it!
