Nick Bonino spoke publicly on Monday about returning to the Penguins. Here's what he said about returning and competing for a Stanley Cup again with the team.
Who are some of the Steelers top free agent targets? Poni listed a handful of names to get Mullsy's reaction, including a former WPIAL star. And who are some Steelers cut candidates? ESPN college basketball analyst Seth Greenberg joined the show. Seth likes this Pitt team. Seth thinks if North Carolina still has a chance to get in, Pitt should be a slam dunk, but we haven't seen that from most analysts. He sees them as a tournament team and thinks they could even win a game. Seth talked about the difference between talent and potential. Seth said he isn't sold on the NET system and it comes down to asking yourself if a team can really win a game in the tournament. Poni asked why the ACC is catching so much flack this season, but Seth thinks Pitt is good and the ACC is good. HOCKEY TALK! Will fans continue to chant for the firing of Ron Hextall? Poni thinks there should be a montage of Nick Bonino as he returns.

Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins
The trade deadline has come and gone, which means it's time for the season's home stretch! Hunter starts the show off by looking at both moves the Penguins made on Friday and how he woke up with a little smile on his face when Nick Bonino was acquired. He analyzes where Bonino's game is since he's been away for the last several years and why the Penguins might not get much offense out of him at this time (though it'll be more than what they got out of Blueger). He then looks at how his defensive impact has been this season and why he's going to be an upgrade over Teddy Blueger (likely on the fourth line). He then analyzes the Kulikov deal and why this deal is more about cap relief in future seasons than this one. Who will he play for when he comes in? Hunter tries to answer that question since all six of the starting defensemen are currently probably better than him. After that, he rates Ron Hextall's deadline as a whole and why he likely panicked on Wednesday when he was dealing for Granlund. Hunter looks at why he could've been more patient and added a more impactful player closer to the deadline since they were about to gain even more cap space from the McGinn trade. Finally, Hunter previews Saturday's matchup against the Panthers as the Penguins go for the fifth win in a row. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! KEITH DAMBROT - Keith said that the City Game should be played every year because it is great for the city. Keith thinks that college basketball players should be paid. "College coaches make a lot of money, so why shouldn't the players make some money?" He talked about Bronny James. He said that sometimes it is tough when you coach a friend's son! ESPN hates hockey, but we don't! TYLER KENNEDY - Tyler was surprised to find out that Grandlund and Bonino were the targets from Ron Hextall. He says you need to give Granlund some time to settle in before you judge him. He said he would rather have Blueger than Bonino. BUT, he thinks the Penguins were stale and are now a better team. He said Sullivan didn't seem to know too much about Granlund, which could mean there's a disconnect between the GM and coach. We revisit our Joey Porter Jr. talk from the start of the show.
Penguins insider and historian Bob Grove joined the show. Bob believes the Penguins improved because they got rid of some dead weight and added guys that could work. Bob was all in for JT Miller, but wasn't sure how the Penguins would've worked that out. Bob highlighted the year Jason Zucker has had and that the Penguins will need to find a way to re-sign him. Bob said Jeff Carter is still getting too much ice time and he would toss him out on the wing with Nick Bonino back in the fold. He said Ron Hextall made mistakes with the Carter and Kasperi Kapanen contracts that “ruined the whole season.” Bob isn't sure if Mikael Granlund will be the player they are looking for, especially on the defensive side, but he loves what Bonino can offer there. Bob commented on the Dmitry Kulikov acquisition and described it simply as a way to dump the Brock McGinn salary as he went back to Anaheim in the deal. Bob expects the Pens to make the playoffs, but doesn't like their chances against anyone ahead of them, besides the Lightning. He said to still keep your eyes on the Sabres who could make a late push to the Pens' playoff hopes.
Poni gave Ron Hextall a D for his work ahead of the trade deadline and said the Nick Bonino trade and luckily dumping the Kasperi Kapanen contract is the only reason it wasn't a failing grade. And an NFL team put the franchise on a running back that had a big season. If the Steelers had to make the same decision in a few years with Najee Harris, would you do it? Poni referenced everything that happened with Le'Veon Bell. Penguins insider and historian Bob Grove joined the show. Will he make the Steelers believe he is the perfect package? Poni is praying the Steelers don't trade up to take Porter. And Poni wants the Steelers to draft Jack Campbell in the 2nd round after he put together a phenomenal combine.

Dana and Landi recap tonights tilt against the Vancouver Canucks. The Sharks would start the game off with a bang, Nick Bonino would score 18 seconds in but the Sharks would fail to hold the lead. Dakota Joshua would score 2 goals in the first to give Vancouver the lead heading into intermission. The Sharks would score 2 goals in a 17 shot 2nd period, however just as they did in the first would allow 2 Canucks goals. Jonah Gadjovich would score an early 3rd period goal to draw the Sharks even after a great individual effort in front of the net. Kevin Labanc would also score a sweet shot from the slot to give the Sharks a lead late in the 3rd. Just as they allowed goals at the end of the prior 2 periods, the Sharks would allow Vancouver to tie it late and eventually get the OT winner. On our latest (and last for this offseason) Offseason Check In, our Ted Ramey sits down with Nick Bonino to talk about last year, his offseason, and his thoughts on this upcoming season.
The summer interview series wrapped up on today's episode as the guys sat down with San Jose Sharks forward, and two-time Stanley Cup Champion, Nick Bonino. He talked about being a veteran on a team that's heading into a season that most view as a transition year. He also talked about his career, which has featured many ups and downs. He was traded before ever playing an NHL game and by the time he had played 300 NHL games he had already been traded a total of three times. He talked about life on the move and whether or not it gets easier to stomach being traded. He also touched on his two Stanley Cup runs with the Penguins and his favourite memories from those. Before getting to the Bonino interview, Frank and Jason talked about JT Miller's surprising extension with the Vancouver Canucks. What allowed these two sides to find common ground? Frank shone some light onto that. Jason also shared why he thinks the Canucks will take a step forward this season. They also hit on Kirby Dach's new deal before getting to a new edition of 'Fill in the Blank' with Tyler Yaremchuk.0:55 - JT Miller's new deal5:55 - Why the Canucks will bounce back8:55 - Kirby Dach's new deal11:30 - Will Slafkovsky or Wright play in the NHL next season?17:20 - Fill in the Blank23:30 - Nick Bonino joins the show Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Noah Gregor continues his hot scoring ways, potting goals 7 and 8 twenty six seconds apart with his family in attendance. The PK would give up a goal with the rest of Edmonton's offense coming even strength. Scott Reedy (PPG), and Nick Bonino would also score for the Sharks giving them a 4-4 tie at the end of 3 periods. It was all for naught as Zach Hymen would secure the win for the Oilers in OT. The Sharks would give up Reimer would save 26 of 31 shots for a .839 save PCT%.
