The New York Rangers are heading into the 2023/2024 season as one of the favorites to not only win the Metropolitan Division but to win the Eastern Conference. They had a very disappointing loss in round 1 to the New Jersey Devils in the NHL Playoffs last season. There were some changes in the franchise since the series loss. They fired head coach Gerard Gallant and hired Peter Laviolette in the summer. Some of the roster changes include the additions of Blake Wheeler, Nick Bonino and Erik Gustafsson. The Rangers also had a good draft, being able to select Gabe Perrault with the 23rd overall. Can this quick retool help the Rangers finally get back to the Stanley Cup Finals and win their first Cup since 1994? Now the team on the other side of the island, the New York Islanders, also had an underwhelming season. They finished their season 42-31-9 in the Metro Division before being booted out of the playoffs in round 1, falling to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 in the series. After acquiring and signing Bo Horvat to a long-term deal at the NHL Trade Deadline, the Islanders really didn't have a lot of cap space to make any major outside-the-organization signings. They were able to re-up on big-time pending unrestricted free agents Pierre Engvall, Iyla Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov to nice contracts. There are still moves that need to be made to get the Isles back under the cap ceiling. Are these deals going to be good enough to make the Islanders a legit threat in the Metro Division? This next team is definitely going to be a wild card, no pun intended. The Washington Capitals are coming off one of their worst seasons in a long time. They finished 35-37-10 and placed sixth in the Metro. Many writers and media heads are starting to think this Washington team may be getting ready to rebuild. Now the Capitals entered this summer firing the now-Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette and replaced him with Spencer Carbery. Carbery, who was a coach in the Washington farm system before, is taking over after a short stint as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Similarly to the Islanders' roster, the Capitals are really tight to the salary cap. Washington may be closer to a rebuild for that reason, specifically. The only moves that the Caps were able to make are signing free agent Max Pacioretty, who's coming off a major Achilles injury, and signing winger Tom Wilson to a six-year extension through 2030-2031. The Capitals also had a great first two rounds of the NHL Entry Draft, selecting Ryan Leonard at pick eight and Andrew Cristall at pick 40. Even if this team is a bit older right now, the Capitals are setting to make the rebuild or retool quick and easy.
A Peter Laviolette-themed mailbag episode! Ways in which he's similar and different from Gerard Gallant. How will Laviolette mesh with Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider? Why Mike Keenan was NEVER an option and never should have been. Which free agents should the Rangers target with their limited cap space? Episode 851. Tonight @ari_gold24 was on talking @nyrangers with their new coach #peterlaviolette who played for them in the @nhl back in 1988-89 for 12 games. Neither of us love the decision. Especially since Peter was fired by @capitals for missing #stanleycupplayoffs this season. Important to develop #alexlafrenière & #kappokakko next season. #stanleycupfinals best team won @vegasgoldenknights but imagine if the opponent had been the @nhlbruins instead of @flapanthers a man can dream. @nyjets Mr. G is being cautiously optimistic. @yankees #baseball slow to watch. Though he does play in a weekly #softballleague in #centralpark #nyc & his team has made the playoffs. In a relationship with a huge @fsufootball & @taylorswift fan.All sports. One podcast. Tom Gulitti of NHL.com joins the show to discuss Laviolette's tenure with the Washington Capitals and coaching style, plus host Vincent Mercogliano offers insight into how the search went down, what to expect from the new bench boss and offseason decisions facing the Blueshirts.
Before moving to Vegas to cover the Golden Knights in their inaugural 2017 season, Gary Lawless was part of TSN's Winnipeg Jets coverage. Lawless spoke on his experience covering the Golden Knights, the ‘nothing expires in the fridge' cap approach of George McPhee & Kelly McCrimmon, and the perfect Game 6 win over the Stars that clinched the team's 2nd appearance in the Stanley Cup Final. Plus, why Mark Stone is the ‘Larry Bird of Hockey'. In Headlines, the Maple Leafs presumed hire of ex-Flames GM Brad Treliving leads things off, the guys examine what decisions are at the forefront of Treliving's to-do list, and Ray explains why Mitch Marner should be a lot higher on the list than people think. Head Coach vacancies are being filled around the NHL as Ray's former line-mate Andrew Brunette was announced as the new Preds bench-boss. Ray discusses what Brunette brings to the teams he coaches and the first major decision by Barry Trotz. Trotz' former team, the Washington Capitals, announced Spencer Carbery as their new HC; the guys look at the job ahead for one of the most coveted coaching candidates this year. Plus, the ongoing search for the new Calgary Flames HC, Gerard Gallant's name emerging, and why Darryl Sutter's contract might play a factor. With the BIG DANCE just a few days away, the guys preview the Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights, the battle for which team will capture their first-ever championship, and the key factors of the matchup. Kris Abbott joins the pod and talks the MYRIAD of options to bet the finals on Betano.ca. The over/under on OT games, Panthers players favoured for the Conn Smythe, and the Golden Knights slight edge to win are discussed. Plus, Stanley Cup picks, and the quick but close series that Ray expects. Follow us here! This week on the roundtable, Rob, Jesse and Russo are joined by the one and only Doug MacLean, the former bench boss of the Florida Panthers from back in 1996 when the Cats last made the final four. Doug looks back on that magical time, and gives his analysis on what he has seen in this years playoffs, including huge upsets and surprises, like Gerard Gallant losing his job with the Rangers, and Toronto, Edmonton and Boston failing to make some noise. Plus Mac promotes his very first book: Draft Day: How hockey teams pick winners, or get left behind. The roundtable tackles the final four between the Stars and Golden Knights and the Panthers vs the Hurricanes which begins Thursday and Friday. The Calgary Flames seemingly blocking Brad Treliving from interviewing for GM jobs until June 30, a rumoured return for Mike Babcock or Peter Laviolette behind the bench in Columbus and the Coyotes proposed arena project in Tempe defeated by public vote last night in Arizona. Hour 2: Craig Carton has been talking about a softball game for June but Boomer already has a commitment and we are all in an awkward situation right now. None of us want to play softball. We have not played softball in 4 years because nobody except Boomer wants to play. Tampa Rays shortstop Wander Franco hot dogged a throw to first and some people think it was disrespectful. Jerry returns for an update but first we talked more about this softball game with Carton and how Jerry really did commit to it. The Five Borough Bike Tour is this Saturday and Gio is actually pumped for it. Willie Calhoun hit another HR as the Yankees beat the Guardians.
