Workshop #22 Young Composers & Improvisors Workshop Recordings

The title of my piece is Gemini due to the fact that there is a section in my piece that repeats, however different instruments use that melody. The Cello opens up the piece and then the flute follows and both the flute and the cello close with that same melody. Although these two instruments are in this section of my piece they sound completely different as if it has its own personality. “Gemini is thought to be very adaptable and flexible, sometimes to the point of being two different personalities.” The process of composing my piece was very tedious. I had to constantly change my composition since I was never satisfied with my results. With the help of Luis, he had helped me figure out a melody for my composition. This allowed me to further figure out how I would like my composition to sound. Composing music isn’t easy. You can’t just stick random notes in random places. I have almost no background in music but I most definitely know the difference between compositions that have been worked hard on and vice versa. Although this was a long process, I really enjoyed working on my piece. Making my composition allowed me to really sit down and hear what I have learned throughout the year by both my teacher and Noteflight. I’ve learned the patience that is necessary when it comes to composing. My piece really isn’t about any extra ideas. I just started my piece with very deep notes and as the composition progresses it lightens up and deepens at the end of the piece. My piece is dedicated to Luis Cobo and Christina Cobo since they helped me with both inspiration and composition.

Workshop #15 Young Composers & Improvisors Workshop Recordings

I start by hitting some random notes, switched stuff around, add a chord here and there, and work out a melody. That’s how I do most things on Noteflight! I don’t really know a main part or instrument but I personally like a part near the end where there are a lot of eighth notes all in a row, that’s what I like best. A challenge that I faced while writing my piece was writing when not knowing what to write. I loved composing. It brings out the music in you. You also get to learn SO many new things! As I said, I loved it!

Workshop #7 Young Composers & Improvisors Workshop

Well I began my composition by messing around a little on Noteflight before finding my main melody. My first instrument was the clarinet, and then I added on the Bassoon, French Horn, Cello and Violin. My first run through of my piece was a little tough but with some help I either resolved or changed those dissonances. To add to my piece I started with a main melody and then added on what sounded right.
