Jane and James interview Dr. Sarah Louise Miller about her new book on the Avro Lancaster, The Lancaster Story. They discuss the significance of the Lancaster in RAF Bomber Command during World War II and its cultural impact. They also explore the personal stories and experiences of those involved with the Lancaster, including ground crew and WAAFs. Sarah shares her research process and the new perspectives she brings to the history of the Lancaster. The team discuss some of the lesser-known life-saving missions of the Lancaster, such as the MANNA and EXODUS operations, which are often overshadowed by the aircraft's destructive capabilities. They also highlight the vital role of the WAAF in supporting the Royal Air Force (RAF) and challenge the narrative that women were merely support workers. The conversation touches on the importance of representing women's contributions in historical narratives and the need for more accurate and inclusive storytelling. The guests also discuss the challenges and emotional impact of researching and writing about these topics, and Sarah talks about her new project, telling the story of Hawaiian women in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor. Ever felt overshadowed by a sibling or struggled to find your own identity? Katherine Paterson's "Jacob Have I Loved" brings these raw emotions to the surface, and we're peeling back the layers. Join us as we navigate Sarah Louise's turbulent journey, from her envy-ridden youth on the Chesapeake Bay to her quest for self-recognition as a nurse midwife (or alternatively, her journey from maybe a 5 in Maryland to a 10 in a small Appalachian Mountains town). Our conversation takes some unexpected turns as we tackle themes like teenage crushes, emotional abuse, and the generational dynamics that steer Sarah Louise's path. We get hung up on the romantic relationships in this book and Hannah reveals she has a very forgiving nature. In this exploration of "Jacob Have I Loved," we promise a journey through the complex waters of sibling rivalry, with a touch of humor and a crab-related quiz to boot (because Chesapeake Bay, duh!).These Books Made Me is a podcast about the literary heroines who shaped us and is a product of the Prince George's County Memorial Library System podcast network. Today we get a full Croatia Catchup from Sarah Louise, and it's a hilarious journey. We hear why people flock to the country due to their Game of Thrones passion. Sarah naturally had a run-in with an AirBnb host who basically shamed Sarah for asking a question. Susie says Sarah deserves a gold medal in packing and we hear how she managed to pack two weeks worth of clothes AND FOUR PAIRS of shoes in her carryon bags. Sarah has decided she is now a fan influencer, and if you see anyone ANYONE in Denver using a handheld fan it is because Sarah influenced them and not any other reason. We discuss some strange European fashion trends that Sarah wants to embrace despite being what Susie claims is the uniform of a bad cult. We learned some things about mosquitoes that are whatever the opposite of a fun fact is, and Susie would like to eradicate them off the face of the Earth consequences be damned. In a suburb of North-West London, among housing estates and residential streets lies a secret bunker, you may never have heard of it but it's one of the most important World War Two sites in Britain. Here, deep underground, the RAF built its Uxbridge headquarters where it commanded the defence of the country in the Battle of Britain. The pilots who fought in the skies are rightly hailed as heroes and affectionately known as 'the few', but they wouldn't have been able to do what they did without the many women behind them and under the ground gathering intelligence and commands, distributing them at lightening speed under the intense pressure of active battle.Dan goes down into the earth with Dr Sarah-Louise Miller, who brings their stories to life in the room where the Battle of Britain was organised, overlooking the very maps that show what happened there during that decisive summer of 1940. Dr Sarah-Louise's new book 'The Women Behind the Few' puts the Women's Auxiliary Air Force back at the heart of Britain's war, exploring what they did- collecting and disseminating vital intelligence- that led to the Allied victory. You can also visit the secret RAF bunker in Uxbridge, find out more about the Battle of Britain Bunker Museum here: http://battleofbritainbunker.co.uk/Produced by Mariana Des Forges and edited by Dougal Patmore. If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today!Download the History Hit app from the Google Play store.Download the History Hit app from the Apple Store. In this next episode I share my chat with Sarah Louise who talks me through her one pregnancy and the birth of her little girl. Sarah Louise talks openly about her 10 year relationship coming to an end in the early weeks of her pregnancy. She shares how she not only navigated pregnancy during Covid but also coping with the unexpected end to such a huge chapter of her life. She had a really positive induction and was supported by some incredible midwives and doctors throughout labour and birth. Sarah Louise also speaks so highly of a midwife in particular who gave her the time she needed while learning how to feed her baby.Later in the episode she shares aspects of her life which I know will be valuable to others who have experienced the grief of a relationship breakdown. Being honest is at the heart of songwriting. When we write and release music that is true and meaningful to us, that shines through and leads to an authentic connection with our listeners. It's not always easy to be honest. In fact, it can be quite scary at times, but our songs sparkle when we're honest. I couldn't be more excited to bring you a fantastic conversation with Sarah Louise about songwriting and honesty. The quote for this episode is by Calum Scott: “I had to be honest in my songwriting for it to be where it is, and it's always scary wondering if anyone will connect with that.” The conversation Sarah and I had is the true definition of honesty. I loved getting the chance to talk to her about being honest in our own music and the true connection truthful music creates for both songwriters and listeners. As country songwriters, we truly believe in being authentic and writing music that is meaningful to us. This conversation has a little bit of everything. There are laughs and funny stories, and there are also moments that are much deeper and more vulnerable. Sarah and I hope the honesty we share is inspiring. Are you enjoying Write on Track? If you've recently seen a wall that has a beautifully stony finish or a soft and curvy element of architecture with a real depth to it, the chances are it's Tadelakt. After Laura had her shower and bathroom finished in Tadelakt, it's been a point of constant admiration which gets lots of questions so here are the answers! To help her delve deeper, Laura speaks to: Tadelakt applicator Dan Dixon-Spain to find out exactly what it is; Michaelis Boyd architect Sara Dowle to find out where it can be used in the home and why it's so special and finally, Sarah-Louise Marks, founder of No.17 House, who has experimented with Tadelakt all over her home.
