Your Chargeback Fees are Going Up!

The Fraud Boxer Podcast

"There's no way that these are not gonna be upcharged. There is zero chance these are not gonna be marked up just like every other thing that PSPs do."   In this episode, Ronan Ben-Ami from the chargeback mitigation company Justt, breaks down the latest changes to chargeback fees from Visa. The card network has introduced new fees for acquirers and shorter response deadlines, which will likely increase costs for businesses. Acquirers are now charged higher fees for longer dispute resolutions, and they're passing those costs directly to merchants. This means merchants will have less time to fight disputes and will incur more fees for delays, making it more critical than ever to have a quick and effective chargeback strategy. With these changes, the focus for merchants must shift from simply winning disputes to maximizing the Return on Investment (ROI) for each case. The new landscape requires businesses to have a deep understanding of their specific fees and to obtain their TC40 and TC15 data to properly monitor their chargeback ratios. To adapt, merchants should consider using smart decisioning tools that can automatically accept disputes that aren't worth fighting and build strong, compelling cases for those that are, helping to protect their bottom line in this new era of increased fees and shortened timelines.   Links from the video: Tables for the new fees: https://justt.ai/blog/visa-chargeback-fee-changes-april-2025/#:~:text=Below%20are%20the%20main%20changes,a%20%241.00%20fee%20per%20case. Lex chats with Harish Natarajan - Practice Manager, Financial Inclusion and Infrastructure, Finance, Competitiveness & Innovation at the World Bank, and Carlos Brandt - The Senior Advisor for Pix at the Central Bank of Brazil. Together they discuss the remarkable success of Pix, Brazil's real-time payment system, which now sees over 6 billion transactions per month and is used by more than 90% of the adult population and 80% of companies. Lex explores how Pix was created by the Central Bank of Brazil with strong public-private collaboration, backed by regulatory authority and supported by a co-creation model with stakeholders. Key to its adoption were a low-cost centralized infrastructure, clear branding, mandatory participation by large banks, and a robust national communication strategy. Globally, Pix is seen as a leading example of fast payment system deployment, driven by the central bank acting as a neutral coordinator and scheme owner. Lex also examines the technical architecture, built in-house by a surprisingly small team of 55–65 people, and how scalable infrastructure and extensibility have enabled rapid growth and innovation. NOTABLE DISCUSSION POINTS: 1. Pix achieved mass adoption through public-private co-creation and legal mandate:Pix now processes over 6 billion transactions per month, with 90% of Brazil's adult population and 80% of businesses actively using it. Its success stems from a strategic legal mandate in 2013 granting the Central Bank regulatory and operational authority over retail payments. The Central Bank then led a co-creation process involving both public and private stakeholders through the Pix Forum, fostering alignment, inclusivity, and strong network effects.2. A lean but powerful team built a nation-scale real-time payments system:The Pix infrastructure was built entirely in-house by a relatively small team, 30-40 people for the technical infrastructure layer and around 25 for the payment scheme layer. It operates 24/7 with real-time settlement and uses centralized infrastructure separate from Brazil's traditional large-value payment rails. This centralized, purpose-built architecture dramatically lowered costs and enabled rapid rollout.3. Strategic communication and mandated participation drove adoption at scale:The Central Bank led a national communication campaign to build trust, establish a strong brand identity, and educate the public. Simultaneously, it mandated major banks (with over 500,000 active accounts) to join Pix, triggering widespread voluntary adoption from smaller PSPs. The rollout included a restricted pilot phase and emphasized user-friendly features like QR codes and aliases to boost convenience and usage from day one. TOPICS Pix, Central Bank of Brazil, World Bank, Visa, Citibank, M-Pesa, Alipay, SPI, fintech, payments, PSP, API, Fast Payments, Payments Infrastructure, PayTech ABOUT THE FINTECH BLUEPRINT

In this SPECIAL EDITION of our banking litigation podcast, we consider a key risk area for financial institutions handling client payments – the so-called Quincecare duty of care. This episode is hosted by John Corrie, who is joined by Ceri Morgan and special guests Jenny Stainsby and Scott Warin. The English courts continue to grapple with payment processing claims brought by both victims of authorised push payment (APP) fraud and companies subject to an internal fraud by an authorised signatory who has gone rogue. While the seminal Supreme Court decision in Philipp v Barclays [2023] UKSC 25 recalibrated the payment processing duties owed by banks, court guidance is still needed on what is required to meet the requisite standard on a case-by-case basis, and claimants continue to explore novel causes of action. Steffen Vollert, Co-founder of Volt: $87 Million Raised to Build the World's Leading Global Real-Time Payment Network

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 13, 2025 27:26

In a recent episode of Category Visionaries, I sat down with Steffen Vollert, Co-Founder and Interim CEO of Volt, to explore their journey building a global real-time payment network. With over $87 Million in funding, Volt has evolved from a European open banking solution to a worldwide payment infrastructure platform, connecting major payment systems like Pix in Brazil and PayTo in Australia. Beyond his role at Volt, Steffen shared an unexpected side venture - a vintage tractor restoration business that provides a therapeutic counterbalance to the digital world of fintech. Topics Discussed: Evolution from European open banking to global real-time payments The transition through different leadership roles (CTO, COO, CEO) Early product market fit challenges and iterations Strategic focus on PSPs and enterprise customers The impact of COVID on early company formation Building marketing and sales teams in fintech Fundraising journey through multiple rounds Organizational scaling beyond 150 employees GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Speed to MVP Beats Infrastructure: Volt launched their initial prototype in just six months, compared to the industry standard of 2-3 years. Steffen explained, "We really focused on what is the fastest path to deliver something that has enough value for a merchants who actually put us on their checkout as a payment option." B2B founders should prioritize delivering core value quickly over building perfect infrastructure. Vertical Focus Drives Team Success: The team discovered that sales and marketing professionals in payments are highly specialized by vertical. Steffen noted, "Many salespeople in the industry are so specialized, they really join companies with a focus for their vertical where they have their network." B2B founders should commit to specific verticals long-term to attract and retain top talent. Product Market Fit is Continuous: Rather than a single moment, Volt experienced multiple "false" product market fits before achieving true traction. Steffen shared, "Every product advantage nowadays is temporary. You always need to be fast, you always need to be scrappy, you always need to think ahead." B2B founders should view product market fit as an ongoing process rather than a destination. Strategic Channel Selection: Volt deliberately chose to focus on large PSPs as distribution partners rather than pursuing SMEs directly. Steffen explained, "We really want to focus our resources on where we can move the needle for our revenue impact." B2B founders should evaluate distribution channels based on internal efficiency and resource constraints. Investment Partner Alignment: During fundraising, Volt prioritized investors who deeply understood their space over pure capital. Steffen emphasized, "For us it was much more important than the money itself... having partners on the other side to understand what we build, why we build it, why it's tough, why it's not going to be a straight line." B2B founders should seek investors who truly understand their market dynamics and challenges.   //   Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe.  www.GlobalTalent.co
