Episode Summary When was the last time you did something that truly pushed you outside your comfort zone? In this episode of The Art of Living Well Podcast®, we share our experience attending a hiking and endurance retreat on Vancouver Island and the powerful lessons we brought home from it. This was not your typical retreat. It was not about relaxation or escape. It was about challenge, growth, community, and reconnecting with yourself in a deeper way. We open up about the fears, self-doubt, and mindset shifts that showed up, along with the unexpected moments of joy, connection, and clarity that came from being fully present in nature. This conversation is about more than one experience. It is about why stepping outside your routine, disconnecting from distractions, and surrounding yourself with new people can be transformative, especially for women in midlife. If you have been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or craving something different, this episode will inspire you to take that next step. Key Takeaways Why getting outside your comfort zone leads to growth The mental and emotional benefits of being in nature How disconnecting from your phone improves connection and presence The power of community and meaningful conversations Why midlife is the perfect time to try something new How self-doubt shows up and how to move through it The impact of challenging your body in new ways Why you do not need a full retreat to create transformation Episode Breakdown with Timestamps 00:00 A question that sparks growth 02:30 What this retreat was really about 06:00 The power of nature and disconnecting 10:00 Letting go of distractions and being present 13:30 Facing self-doubt and physical challenge 18:00 Pushing past comfort zones and mindset shifts 22:00 The importance of community and connection 26:00 Why meaningful conversations matter 30:00 Lessons from being around different ages and backgrounds 34:00 Why you deserve experiences like this 38:00 How to bring these lessons into your everyday life Resources and Links Join our hiking community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1368978181038556 Website: https://www.theartoflivingwell.us/ Email: theartoflivingwellpodcast@gmail.com Sponsor This episode is brought to you by Good Health Saunas, offering commercial grade infrared saunas designed to support detoxification, muscle recovery, relaxation, and better sleep. Jonathan Wiseman, General Counsel and Chief People Officer at Ocado Retail, joins Scott Brown to share practical lessons on influence, adaptability, and building a truly commercial legal career. In this episode of Lessons I Learned in Law, Jonathan reflects on his dual role leading both legal and people functions within a fast-growing retail joint venture between Ocado and Marks & Spencer. He shares why the most effective in-house lawyers don't stay confined to their “legal lane,” but instead operate confidently in the grey areas between legal risk, commercial decision-making, and broader business strategy.Jonathan's second lesson centres on career progression—encouraging lawyers to take opportunities when they arise, even when they don't perfectly align with a pre-defined plan. He candidly discusses his initial hesitation in stepping into a Chief People Officer role and how that decision ultimately expanded his leadership capability and perspective. His final insight focuses on commercial judgement. Rather than trying to “win” every legal point, he explains why the best long-term outcomes come from building sustainable relationships and balancing legal precision with business reality. It's a reminder that success in-house is as much about collaboration and trust as it is about technical expertise.Listeners also get a glimpse into Jonathan's personal side, from navigating music choices on family car journeys to his reflections on how AI is already reshaping both legal and HR functions. This episode is brought to you in partnership with Wordsmith AI — the legal AI platform built specifically for in-house teams.Wordsmith Legal AIGuest RecommendationsSong: Waterloo Sunset – The Kinks Resources & Links Mentioned in This EpisodeRegister your interest in joining The Lodge In-house Legal Community: https://bit.ly/TheLodgebyHB Listen to the PodcastSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/ Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/4 YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/Connect with Heriot Brownhttps://heriotbrown.com/ About Heriot Brown: At Heriot Brown, we help lawyers find fulfilment in their careers. How to Change Our Relationship with Fear and Step outside of Our Comfort ZoneContrary to what some people believe, fear has great utility in life.Much of the decisions we make have an element of fear that fuelled the course of action we have chosen.Whether it's fear of the unknown, or fear of something tangible in your space, it's the kind of motivator that keeps you moving, pushing, and can be the catalyst to so much change in your life. All good things in moderation, although. It's important that we cultivate self-mastery around our fear, so that we don't inadvertently find ourselves in a situation where our fear is ruling over us and our decisions#fightingfear #mindset #relatable #storytime 0:00 - 1:30 - Introduction1:30 - 16:30 Changing my Relationship with Fear16:30 - Wrap Up*RESOURCES*For all topics related to renewing and rebuilding family, communities and relationships, check out our blogs! Episode 95 Step Outside Show is a Philadelphia based artist collective showcasing the street art and graffiti scene. Their latest show featured works by 100 artists primarily from Philly but also a few from Baltimore and New York. This was their third major show – all of their events are interactive – visitors can tag and leave your own mark while you celebrate the diverse collection of street art and artists featured in the exhibits. Step Outside Show is creating a space where street artists can display and sell their work, giving the visitors an opportunity to experience the ephemeral nature of street art while also creating a little sense of permanence in something that is so fleeting – because we never know how long some pieces on our streets will last. Step Outside Show takes no cut for exhibitions, all monies from artwork sold go to the artists, which puts money back into our communities. I'm thrilled to be joined by Doomed Future, Robo Q 4 and Raw G Zero to talk about Step Outside Show. Late one night, alone in an old villa that once functioned as a hotel, he heard footsteps where no one should have been. When three heavy knocks echoed through the massive wooden doors, the security camera showed nothing. No people. No cars. No movement at all. Just a street that felt… wrong. As if time itself had slipped.Instinct told him not to step outside. What followed were vivid dreams, a voice screaming for help in a language he barely remembered using, and repeated encounters suggesting the villa—and the street beyond it—weren't limited to one moment in time. Other students felt it too. Doors opened on their own. Alarms triggered without cause. People were frightened in separate rooms at the exact same moment. Some places don't let you pass through unnoticed. And some doors, once opened, don't lead where you expect.#RealGhostStories #TrueParanormal #HauntedPlaces #FlorenceItaly #HauntedItaly #ParanormalEncounter #Unexplained #GhostEncounter #TimeSlip #Otherworldly #HauntedBuildings #MidnightEncounters #ParanormalPodcast #TrueGhostStory #SomethingFollowedMe Love real ghost stories? After experiencing burnout and adrenal fatigue, author and entrepreneur Chris Ducker realized hustling harder wasn't the answer. He gets candid about burnout, recovery, and why joy-filled practices are essential for leaders who want to last. Two of his favorites: bonsai gardening and birdwatching. He also makes a compelling case for getting outside. It's a refreshing invitation back to an embodied, sustainable way of life.Memorable Quotes“I hadn't necessarily been burning the candle on both ends. But what I had been doing was a little too much of pretty much everything.”“You don't need to break in order to take a break.”“Self-care actually is a strategy, and it's a strategy that you can use to your advantage, particularly from a business owner standpoint.”“Ultimately you're the engine, you're the spark, you're the difference maker. But even engines need a little maintenance.”“Hobbies, particularly creative hobbies, if you spend a minimum of two hours a week on your hobby, you will be as much as 30% more productive in your work.”“Any kind of success that costs you your health or your family or your joy isn't really actually success.”“We want that big win, that big roar. And you only get that by being really consistent and the real game here is patience. It's consistency, it's showing up when it's not sexy, when it's not flashy, it's doing the unsexy work.”Key TakeawaysBurnout Isn't Just Overwork. Stress from life, context, and even unsustainable pace can take you down. Your body always keeps the score.Self-Care Is Strategy. Leaders last when they guard their health and energy—because even engines need maintenance.Hobbies Heal. Joyful pastimes don't just prevent burnout; they restore creativity and can boost productivity by up to 30%.Step Outside. Just 15 minutes in nature can reset your mind and body. This week's mindful moment invites you to reconnect with the world around you: step outside and notice the air. Whether you're at home, at work, or on the go, take just 60 seconds to pause outside. Feel the temperature on your skin—is it warm, cool, breezy? Breathe it in slowly and see if you notice any scents—the earthy smell of rain, fresh grass, or simply the scent of the day. Let your feet ground you, look up at the sky, and observe the light. This isn't about analysing—it's about feeling. A quick reset that brings you out of your head and into the present, one breath at a time. Spend just five minutes with this practice, and see how it can bring calm and clarity to your day. Whether you're a CEO, entrepreneur, or team leader, this episode will inspire you to engineer your days with intention and lead with greater focus, resilience, and well-being. Key Takeaways: Small, consistent habits create outsized results in leadership and life. Routines like morning meditation, handwritten to-do lists, and tech-free starts amplify focus and creativity. Practical tips to integrate these habits without overwhelming your schedule. Actionable steps to start today for immediate impact. What You'll Learn in This Episode Why daily routines are non-negotiable for high-performing leaders. 15 practical habits to boost productivity, creativity, and emotional resilience. How to leverage “found time” (like waiting in line) for growth. Science-backed benefits of habits like cold showers, gratitude, and morning sunlight. Tactical ways to prioritize tasks and avoid reactive firefighting. How to end your day for better sleep and tomorrow's success. The 15 Daily Routines for Conscious Leaders Leverage Idle Moments with On-the-Go Reading What: Use Kindle or Apple Books to read during downtime (e.g., waiting in line). Why: CEOs read ~50–60 books/year. Micro-reading turns idle minutes into learning. Pro Tip: Keep a leadership or psychology book queued for quick bursts. Impact: Enriches knowledge, boosts patience, and leverages “found” time. Walk and Learn with Podcast-Powered Walks What: Take 15–60-minute walks while listening to educational podcasts. Why: Walking boosts creativity by up to 60% (Stanford study). Pairs movement with learning. Pro Tip: Use Apple Notes to record ideas sparked during walks. Impact: Energizes body, sparks ideas, and taps ancestral storytelling habits. Handwritten Clarity with a Moleskine To-Do List What: Jot daily priorities in a quality journal each morning. Why: Handwriting engages the brain, improves memory, and boosts focus. Checking tasks releases dopamine. Pro Tip: Invest in a journal and pen you love to make it a ritual. Impact: Frees mental space for execution, grounds your day in clarity. Hot/Cold Shower Ritual for an Energy Boost What: Start showers warm, end with 30–60 seconds of cold. Why: Cold exposure increases adrenaline, alertness, and resilience. Pro Tip: Work up to longer cold bursts (start at 10 seconds). Impact: Resets energy, builds grit, and sharpens mental focus. Mindful Morning Coffee Ritual What: Brew pour-over coffee slowly, savoring the process. Why: Acts as mini-meditation, reducing stress and grounding you. Pro Tip: Research top U.S. roasters for quality beans. Impact: Signals focus, centers you before the day's rush. Curated Learning in Place of TV What: Watch intentional YouTube videos (e.g., skills, hobbies) instead of mindless TV. Why: Reclaims ~3.5 hours/day of TV time for growth. Pro Tip: Subscribe to 50+ channels, journal insights post-viewing. Impact: Inspires ideas, fuels lifelong learning, avoids mental drain. Unplug and Unwind: Intentional Nighttime Routine What: Dim lights, sip herbal tea, avoid screens 30–60 minutes before bed. Why: Blue light suppresses melatonin; cool rooms (65°F) optimize sleep. Pro Tip: Keep your bedroom dark and device-free. Impact: Enhances sleep quality, boosts next-day creativity. Fuel for the Week: Sunday Meal Prep What: Cook healthy meals in bulk on Sundays for the week. Why: Saves time, reduces decision fatigue, fuels peak performance. Pro Tip: Try simple combos like chicken, rice, and veggies. Impact: Sustains energy, prevents junk food crashes. Morning Mindfulness or Meditation What: Spend 2–10 minutes on breathing or guided meditation. Why: Reduces stress, improves decision-making by calming emotions. Pro Tip: Start with free YouTube meditations if apps feel overwhelming. Impact: Builds mental resilience, enhances focus and patience. Practice Daily Gratitude What: Note or pray about 3 things you're grateful for daily. Why: Increases happiness, optimism, and even physical health. Pro Tip: Reflect on challenging people as growth opportunities. Impact: Shifts mindset to abundance, fosters empathetic leadership. Plan and Prioritize Each Day Proactively What: Identify 1–3 Most Important Tasks (MITs) each morning. Why: Prevents firefighting, aligns actions with long-term goals. These 15 habits are designed to compound over time—like investing $10 daily in a stock that grows for decades. They leverage high-agency principles (ownership, proactive execution) and psychological upgrades (gratitude, visualization) to keep you sharp and purposeful. Each routine is time-boxed to fit busy schedules, prioritizing 80/20 impact—focusing on what moves the needle most. By blending tactical execution (e.g., to-do lists, meal prep) with philosophical depth (e.g., gratitude, mindfulness), these habits build a life of intentional momentum. Call to Action Don't try all 15 routines at once—start small, win big. Pick 2–3 habits that resonate most (e.g., tech-free mornings, gratitude, or podcast walks) and commit to them for one week. Track how they shift your focus, energy, or mood in your journal. Share your progress with us on X using #ConsciousLeaderRoutines—we'd love to hear what's working for you! Challenge: Tomorrow morning, try the Mindful Coffee Ritual + Visualize Your Day. Spend 5 minutes brewing slowly and picturing a successful day. Notice how it sets your tone. A Little Wray Of Sunshine: Inspirational stories from everyday people
Send us a textIn this episode, I had the privilege of visiting with Addie Stucki, a teenager in our local high school, and a special family friend of ours. Her message was loud and clear... "Do a lot of service, do a lot for other people...You can do one small thing and it leads to bigger things." She is so inspiring and wise for her age, and after listening to her I personally felt a push to make service a priority in my life. "Service is the most selfish thing you could do for yourself because when you do some small thing or big thing for someone else, in return you get a a mountain of blessings...When I do service projects, I feel so much more happiness...in the end, I just want to be surrounded by as many people who love me, and I love them as possible."
While in Denver with the University of Austin for the Life of Mind Tour, I had a deep conversation about philosophy with Alex Priou.
