In honor of Earth Day, Faith is joined this week by Dr. Erin Engle, a psychologist from NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia to discuss the many ways that nature can reduce distractions and impact mood. In this episode I begin by giving you updates from Brain BS Land and then we dive into the Chris Experiment. I met Chris at my friend Denise's house here in Santa Barbara. We started talking about Pickleball and how she wanted to try it. I suggested she should come on the podcast and we do an experiment around tapping into the courage that is required to try something new. Well instead of signing up for Pickle, she opted for tennis which was more familiar to her and despite that, it was a super uncomfortable experience for her. Why? Because loads of Brain BS came up that I am sure you will be able to relate to as well. If you have been itching to try Pickleball or anything else that is new, this episode will help you to understand how your brain is going to react to that and how you can manage it consciously and prepare in advance so that you are more likely to experience success.Listen to the end to hear how Chris deals with the challenge I gave her in the episode and to hear my special offer around Pickleball for the locals in Santa Barbara and surrounding area. What happens when you mix a real, no kidding fear of going outside, a comedian, sharp wit and a no holds barred look at what's really going on with outdoor recreation gate-keeping? You get an honest, hilarious and confronting look at what heading outside means in America -- and how you can change that. That's the theme of Ivy Le's narrative Spotify podcast FOGO, or Fear of Going Outside. Unlike basically every other guest I've ever had on Humans Outside, Ivy is definitely not outdoor-minded. But after trying outdoor stuff including camping and hunting, she's got some takeaways to share that we all need to hear. Maybe the AI tool I use to help me with show notes says it best (or at least funniest). According to that tool, in this episode you'll hear about: The anecdote for attracting attention in a state park. Challenging traditional ideas of camping and encouraging exploration for people of color. Ivy's difficulty finding a nature store and going to REI instead. Acceptance of rats in New York City as sentient neighbors. (OK, this AI tool is fired -- but you're intrigued, aren't you?) Want to know what those takeaways have to do with anything? Listen now! She is the creator of the critically-acclaimed Spotify Studios podcast FOGO: Fear of Going Outside, a nature show by the most reluctant host ever. FOGO is featured on Delta flights and recommended by The Guardian, CBC, Oprah and, inexplicably, Outside. She hosts the only queer comedy open mic in Austin, and performs at comedy festivals all over the country. She is also mom to two as-yet untraumatized kids.. Instagram | TikTok | Twitter | YouTube | Web DEFINITIONS CPTSD: Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) can result from experiencing chronic trauma, such as prolonged child abuse or domestic violence. It's closely related to PTSD and borderline personality disorder. ADHD: ADHD is a long-term (chronic) brain condition that causes executive dysfunction, which means it disrupts a person's ability to manage their own emotions, thoughts and actions. Heteronormativity: When heterosexuality (cis-man & woman) is the norm, and any other sexual orientation or gender identity is seen as outside the norm, and hence has less privilege. MENTIONED Kim's Convenience ""Come to Me, Daddy"" by BedPost Confessions Ali Siddiq TAKEAWAYS Representation can get in the way of real institutional progress if we're not demanding more than just visible representation on screen, but also behind the scenes at all levels of organizations. Each child is our collective responsibility to raise as a society, and community support can help us all thrive together rather than struggling in isolation. It can be easy to think of practices like rewilding and mindfulness as being habits of only extra-zen, nature-based people. But if you're someone who likes to go outside or is building an outdoor habit, they are probably already a part of what you're doing, at least a little. So how can you do it more? And if you don't think you've added them, how can you make them happen while balancing a modern life? In this episode Micah Mortali, rewilding expert and dean of the Kripalu School of Mindful Outdoor Leadership, shares his insights and tips of rewilding, mindfulness and even meditation. Author of the book “Rewilding, Meditations, Practices, and Skills for Awakening in Nature,” Micah's extra-practical tips make a rewilding habit accessible for any outdoor-lover. “If you aren't embracing or exposing yourself to natural light or the principles of quantum biology, and all the things about ourselves as electromagnetic beings, it's going to compromise your health and that includes your mental health,” explains Heather Crimson, quantum therapist and experienced marriage and family counselor. The Western medical model heavily relies on prescribing medications even for mild and moderate cases of depression and anxiety. These pills act as a Bandaid rather than actually working out the root causes of the patients' dysregulation. In this episode, Heather debunks myths about SSRI efficacy and shares her sunlight prescription for cultivating energy, confidence and security without medication. There is a vast lack of knowledge within the medical community when it comes to the impact of sunlight on mental health. Due to busy modern lifestyles filled with artificial light, most people are living in a way that actively works against their body's natural biology. Although there is no research showing that SSRIs help with depression or even that serotonin is the main driver for depression, they are the most commonly prescribed treatment, even for mild cases. These medications often cause damaging side effects and do nothing to treat the lifestyle factors that are at the root of circadian dysfunction. By getting morning sunlight, reducing artificial light exposure, and blocking blue light in the evenings, your circadian rhythm will begin to properly regulate itself and you will see a marked improvement in both mental and physical health symptoms, all without the help of any medications. People are quick to discount the efficacy of self care, because it sounds too simple and it is easier to think of a pill as a cure. As electromagnetic beings, humans are designed to get their energy from the sun and nature. When you start to live in a way that aligns with your biology, you will be amazed at how much better you feel. Quotes “If you aren't embracing or exposing yourself to natural light or the principles of quantum biology, and all the things about ourselves as electromagnetic beings, it's going to compromise your health and that includes your mental health.” (4:41-4:55 | Heather) “There's an energy problem in their neurotransmitter function, in their hormonal function; and that is the issue.” (13:27-13:35 | Heather) “There's no research that shows that SSRIs help, or that serotonin is actually the cause of depression.” (14:15-14:22 | Heather) “We're not living in a way that supports our biology.” (25:07-25:12 | Heather) Links Connect with Heather Crimson, LMFT, MS: Instagram: @heathercrimson Website: www.enlightenedmood.com To find a practitioner who understand the health principles of quantum biology: www.quantumbiologycollective.org To become a QBC member and get invites to live deep dives & access to our video library: www.quantumhealthtv.com To take our 8 week practitioner certification in the science of quantum biology so that you can add it to your existing area of expertise: www.appliedquantumbiology.com Follow on Twitter, Instagram & Facebook: @quantumhealthtv Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm
On this episode of Compared to Who?, Heather Creekmore is joined by Erin Kerry to discuss a simple and effective way to feel better in your body without weight loss or changes in diet and exercise. Erin, an integrative nutrition health coach and a survivor of bipolar disorder, advocates for safe sun exposure for vitamin D production, gut health, and overall wellness. She also recommends apps like D-minder and talks about an interesting study using cacao powder to ensure optimal safe sun exposure and reduce sun sensitivity. Tune in to learn more about the benefits of sunshine and safe sun exposure for overall health and wellness. Learn more about Erin's health coaching services, listen to her podcast, or connect with Erin Kerry at: www.sparkingwholeness.com Here are three key takeaways from the episode: Improve body image by addressing internal issues of the heart, instead of just physical appearance. Vitamin D is essential for overall health, and the sun is the easiest way to get it. However, individualized, safe sun exposure is important and may require help such as an app like D Minder. Morning sun exposure can stimulate the production of serotonin, which can regulate sleep cycles and improve mood all of which can help you feel better about your body and improve your body image. This week, we're joined by two comedians to talk about their connection to food. First, Ivy Le, host of the podcast Fear of Going Outside. We quote, "Most nature shows are hosted by reckless white men, but avid indoors woman Ivy Le is an Asian mom with severe allergies. Last season, Ivy conquered camping. She's back, braving the outdoors to go hunting- or die trying!" Then, comedian Dan Ahdoot, the author of the new book Undercooked: How I Let Food Become My Life Navigator and How Maybe That's a Dumb Way to Live, talks to us about his connection to food and his family, his theories on relationships, and the journeys he's taken for a great meal. In her podcast, FOGO: Fear of Going Outside, Ivy Le takes on the great outdoors—very, very reluctantly. The result is a lot of jokes about poop, icky things in nature, and why people choose to sleep on the ground. But FOGO also offers a refreshing take on a nature show: Ivy is the daughter of Vietnamese immigrants and she presents an alternative approach to the “reckless white men” that she says have dominated this space. In her first season, Ivy learned to camp. This year, she upped the ante and tried hunting. Here experience proved to be more enlightening—and humbling—than she ever imagined. Cheers,Scott and JakeBourbon Lens About Foursquare Rum Distillery: Foursquare Rum Distillery is located on a former sugar plantation that dates back to approximately 1720, within the tiny Caribbean island of Barbados. The distillery was re-opened by the Seale family in 1996, distilling operations and blending are currently directed by Richard Seale, 4th Generation Trader/Distiller of R.L. Seale & Co. Exceptional Cask Selections represent the unique, and rare offerings of Foursquare Rum Distillery that Richard has hand selected – his personal projects only released when he feels they are of exceptional quality. These are one of a kind expressions, available only for a limited time, and showcasing truly unique approaches to both Rum blending and maturation. About Richard Seale - Master Distiller & Master Blender, Foursquare Rum Distillery Richard Seale, the great grandson of the original R.L. Seale, Reginald Leon Seale who founded R L Seale & Co in 1926, is the fourth generation to work in the family rum business. Richard joined the family craft in 1993. Innovation has been Richard's hallmark over the last 12 years whether reflected in the precision control of fermentation or distillation of rum under vacuum pressure. Richard firmly believes rum's rightful place is among the world's finest spirits and this is what drives his passion to make the very best rums. With an obsessive attention to detail and a questioning attitude, he has never been fearful to bring change to a very conservative industry. He was the driving force behind the new distillery at the historic Foursquare site, completed back in 1996 and sought out the very best engineers to help develop his new ideas. The result? A world-renowned distillery which not only boasts ultra-premium rums but a unique design that makes Foursquare the envy of the Caribbean. Richard began his education in Barbados at Harrison College where on graduation he was awarded the prestigious Barbados Government Scholarship. Richard then completed his Bachelors and Masters degrees at the University of London and now resides in St. Philip, with his wife Gayle and two children Christian and Victoria. In his spare time Richard has a keen passion for Cooking, Horse Racing and Formula 1. Richard continues to live up to his destiny daily at the distillery and carries on the family legacy with dedicated passion and love for his work. “A questioning, opinionated Barbadian is leading rum into the 21st century” – Dave Broom, spirits expert and author of “RUM”. Life is full of opportunities for problem solving, for looking at challenges in a fresh way, for reshaping the landscape to peel out an unexpected solution. And what does it take to get there? Creativity. You might be thinking about creativity as it relates to art, but that's not what I'm talking about. Instead I mean the creativity found in how you approach the world. And heading outside? It has a measurable impact on boosting creativity if you take the right steps -- often literally.
