National is pledging to double the value of key exports within a decade, if it leads the next government. It says it would conduct more overseas trade missions than any other New Zealand government, and sign more high-quality free-trade agreements. It's similar to Labour's Trade policy agenda: both focus on deepening ties with India and Prime Ministerial visits; and pursuing agreements with the Gulf States and South America's Pacific Alliance countries. Labour however, specifies the importance of climate change, sustainability, and indigenous people within those agreements. Joining us are the trade spokespeople for National, Todd McClay, and Labour, Damien O'Connor. Corin Dann hosted the debate.

After graduating from Middlebury College in 1971, he founded the Vanguard Foundation, a San Francisco-based philanthropic group that granted over $400,000 a year to social change organizations. Benz served on the boards of progressive organizations: TVTV, one of the first groups producing PBS programming with videotape; The Film Fund, a foundation supporting documentary films; and the Funding Exchange, a national network of community foundations supporting social activism. He was a founder of Pacific Alliance, the country's first benefit concert production company, and the MUSE Foundation, which produced the feature "No Nukes", a concert film supporting various anti-nuclear causes. He served on the boards of the Council on Foundations and KQED, San Francisco's PBS station.Obie Benz began his film career in 1981 by directing and producing "Americas In Transition", a 30-minute documentary, narrated by Ed Asner, that traced U.S. involvement in Latin America in the 20th century. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short, won numerous prizes, and is still in active distribution over 45 years later. Australia had announced in 2016 that French company DCNS had beat out bidders from Japan and Germany to build the next generation of submarines in Australia's largest-ever defense contract. Canada has traditionally been a major exporter of both agricultural commodities, technology, equipment and food. Yet, in many ways, Canada's position in global food exports indicates good potential for growth. In 2019, Canada ranked fifth among global commodity exporters and 11th in food. As the world's population expands and especially the portion of it that is “middle class” grows, demand for better quality and higher-priced food will climb, which in turn creates opportunities for Canada to increase exports both to meet this need directly and to meet the technology and equipment needs for others who will also be increasing production to meet increased demand The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the global food industry and highlighted the importance of a robust agrifood supply chain at home and abroad. Canada's competitive advantage in agriculture and food production are very relevant with abundant natural resources, productivity, innovative entrepreneurs and a well-established food safety reputation. The Canadian government's 2017 objective for agricultural commodities and food exports is to reach C$75 billion by 2025. So far, export have increased from $61 billion in 2015 to $67 billion in 2019, with most of the export growth driven by exports to the US. The speaker will argue, that there's great potential for growth in agrifood export to other countries beyond the US and particularly to China and South-East Asia. Carlo has a long history in international public policy most recently as Senior Fellow in the University of Ottawa's School of International Development and Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. He is also a member of the Mexican Council on Foreign Relations (COMEXI). Carlo has been a leading voice in debates on recent Canadian free trade agreements and development of trade infrastructure. He is a leading global expert on pan-Pacific trade, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership and Pacific Alliance trade blocs As the Trade Policy Economist at the Canada West Foundation, Sharon Zhengyang Sun specializes in international trade and trade infrastructure policy research. She has taken the lead on research projects including the impact of Made-in-China 2025 on Canadian trade and western Canadian export opportunities with Japan under the CPTPP. Other work include the impact of Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership agreement on western Canada, addressing Chinese non-tariff barriers on Canadian agricultural exports among other trade agreement and trade related issues.
