Heart disease remains one of the world's leading causes of death, yet it can be reversed with the right lifestyle choices. According to the groundbreaking work of Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, a whole food, plant-based diet is scientifically proven to prevent and reverse heart disease. In this episode of the NHA Health Science Podcast, hosted by Dr. Frank Sabatino, Paul Chatlin shares his powerful story of how switching to a plant-based diet not only saved his life but inspired him to create the Plant-Based Nutrition Support Group (PBNSG), a community dedicated to helping others reclaim their health. The Turning Point: From Heart Disease to Plant-Based Healing Paul's journey to plant-based nutrition was prompted by a series of severe heart issues in his family. After losing two uncles to heart disease and witnessing his father undergo quadruple bypass surgery, Paul found himself on a similar path. Despite being under medical supervision and following a typical “heart-healthy” diet, Paul's cholesterol levels remained dangerously high, and he experienced worsening angina, which led him to face the possibility of a heart transplant. The turning point came when Paul was introduced to Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, a pioneer in plant-based heart health. Dr. Esselstyn offered Paul an alternative to surgery: adopting a whole food, plant-based diet. Within weeks of following this approach, Paul saw a dramatic reduction in his symptoms, including weight loss, reduced angina, and improved cholesterol levels. Picture this – you're about to be wheeled into the operating room for triple bypass surgery. One artery is 100 percent blocked and two others are 65 percent blocked. You have an enlarged heart, leaky valves, and a heart murmur, among other issues. At the eleventh hour, your cardiologist says, “Look, we can do this triple bypass, or you can try whole food, plant-based diet.” You have no idea why, but you choose a plant-based diet. Surely it's easier than a triple bypass. Thanks to the work and encouragement of a certain Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr, you make the radical lifestyle change and your angina disappears within three weeks, putting you on a path to health, self-discovery, and a new purpose in life. Today, we're sharing the remarkable true story of Paul Chatlin. Inspired by the radical shift in his health and the desire to spread the word about plants, in 2014, Paul created the Plant-Based Nutrition Support Group, or PBNSG for short. PBNSG is dedicated to evidence-based education and advocacy of plant-based whole-food nutrition and an active lifestyle to prevent and reverse disease. They provide classes, community, and plenty of support to guide people in this transformation and optimize health. Paul is a true go-getter, working from the heart (pun intended) to help spread to good word about whole food plant-based nutrition. Today we meet Paul Chatlin, a man that seemingly had it all – a great job and a beautiful family. One could say he was living the American dream! But not all that glitters is gold… Denial is a devious character, and it creeps up on us when we’re faced with certain aspects of ourselves. Unknowingly, I lived in a world of denial for many years. You see, denial doesn’t present itself in a way that makes you want to change, it’s just the opposite – it makes you feel good by offering another version of what is happening, it makes you look outward, versus within. Sadly, it takes a toll on so many people as they fall into its luring trap. That very trap, almost cost Paul Chatlin his life. Gifted with a second chance, Paul made some game time decisions and promises that would forever alter his path. His story is one of a complete transformation that will leave you feeling motivated, and perhaps even like you should take an internal selfie. Enjoy this episode titled “Gurney Promises” with Paul Chatlin. Peace Love Plants ~Marco Special Guest: Paul Chatlin.

Paul Chatlin was a competitive athlete. In his 40's and 50's he still played tennis 3 times a week, competitive softball on the weekends , was a 6 handicap golfer and made time to lift heavy weights several times a week. He was about to have by-pass surgery, ... but at the last minute, he had a better option ... a change in diet.

This weeks guest is Paul Chatlin who lives in the Detroit area. At 56 years old Paul found himself with one artery 100% blocked, 2 others 65% blocked and headed for bypass surgery. Right before going into surgery his doctor asked him if he would be interested in trying a different approach, and choosing to change what he ate rather than going under the knife. Paul decided to change what he was eating, and switched to a Whole Foods plant based diet. He was able to forgo surgery, he is now healthier than ever, and made a promise to spread that message to others, which he now does with www.pbnsg.org and through their small groups in the Detroit area. They have over 4000+ strong might be the largest plant based support and outreach program in the country. We have a fantastic conversation and I hope that you enjoy!

Through a series of miracles, Paul was able to avoid having major heart surgery, no longer has chest pain and he has watched his health transform. Paul is the founder of the Plant Based Nutrition Support Group, is now devoting his life to giving back, and is here to share his story with you today.

He took that option and more than 4 years later has avoided the surgery everyone thought he had to have. He has gone on to give back to others by establishing the Plant Based Nutrition Support Group with over 4,000 members and an active social media presence. This is the inaugural episode of this unique, hard hitting and practical discussion of your health and your life centered on the fascinating. Why Heart Doc VIP? After 30 years of seeing thousands of patients, teaching hundreds of doctors, and lecturing at universities around the world, Dr. Joel Kahn has a head full of skills, tips and information that can be the path to reach a goal you both share: your energy, health and very lifespan. What is VIP? Vegan, because Dr. Kahn has been for over 40 years, integrative, because he is certified in that and trained to combine east and west approaches, and preventive, because it is absolutely possible to never have heart disease as a life plan. In this show the four rotating topics that will be covered were outlined including interviews of transformative health heroes like Paul Chatlin and his battle for his heart health. Interviews with leaders in nutrition, food industry and the restaurant world that cover both plant-based and other approaches to health that are backed by strong science. Heart disease reversal using standard and integrative approaches and the knowledge from world experts. And finally, Dr. Kahn's review of recent and important science. In this inaugural episode, Dr. Kahn reviews important data on new information from the Harvard School of Public Health on plant based diets, the good, the bad and the ugly. It is all about the quality of the food chosen. There is information that you can use immediately to power your health. Namaste.
At age 55, Paul Chatlin was a few minutes away from surgery on a 100% blockage in his right coronary artery when his cardiologist asked him out of the blue, "Would you consider a nutritional change instead of bypass surgery?" Turns out the cardiologist's mentor was a dude named Caldwell Esselstyn, which is the only way this story makes any sense. Paul, tired of his severe angina, terrified of the life that followed bypass surgery that he witnessed in his father and three uncles, and in agony from the "elephant sitting on his chest," agreed.
At just 56 years old, our guest today had major blockages in his coronary arteries. After receiving a test that put him at a huge risk for a heart attack, he was on the gurney ready to go in for surgery...then something happened that would change his life forever. Years later, he is thriving and living a very active lifestyle, despite his family’s history of heart disease. Today’s guest is Paul Chatlin from the Plant-Based Nutrition Support Group and this is Lean Green DAD Radio.
